Aleutians Again

1942-06-05

Ramree Island fell today. A weird little happening in the Aleutians - an Imperial force has stopped short of Umnak Island. But it appears small, too small to be an invasion force, and is unaccompanied.

That is rather odd. Maybe it was meant to be a raiding force, and was slowed by weather or some other random factor?

Yeah, a slightly better scouting report on it this turn showed at least one heavy cruiser. Can't be certain why it came up short.

Bengal Fury

1942-06-06

Subic Bay and Babar fell today. IJN CAs Mikuma and Mogami bombarded Chittagong today, probably just to make clear that they can. Damage was very light and scouting Intel was modest.
quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Chittagong at 55,41

Japanese Ships
CA Mikuma
CA Mogami

Allied ground losses:
47 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

E8N2 Dave acting as spotter for CA Mikuma
CA Mikuma firing at 23rd Indian Division
CA Mogami firing at 23rd Indian Division

That IJN TF that had parked 40nm away from Umnak retreated 360nm (9 hexes) to the west. Were they there to spook the Allied build up, or was that a bombardment mission gone awry? Hudsons attacked and lost three, one to flak and two to the float fighters out of Adak.

The Allies - all American, actually - swept and bombed Akyab, doing an estimated 23% runway damage and running into no fighter opposition. A repeat planned for tomorrow.

A picket/patrol sub engaged a convoy that rounded Eastern New Guinea and headed toward Port Moresby. Those dud torpedoes are a drag.

Sweeps Over Chungking

1942-06-07

No bases fell today. Numerous Imperial Oscar sweeps appeared over Chungking, taking roughly 10 P-40Es for a like number of Oscars. Only 2 Allied pilots were lost on the day. The second day's attack on Akyab went as well as the first. Tomorrow's recon should give an accurate picture of the damage. The Imperial host has arrived at Bataan. Intel says the minefield at Attu has claimed a victim:
quote:

TF 411 encounters mine field at Attu Island (153,49)

Japanese Ships
APD Nadakaze, Mine hits 1, heavy damage

2 mines cleared

The Fall of Bataan

1942-06-08

Bataan fell today. Taberfane was invaded. Oscar sweeps again over Chungking were effective enough in that they took down P-39s in roughly the same numbers as the two Oscar models lost (about a dozen). The surprise was the continued effectiveness of the Rufes at Adak against the B-17Es. Overall only 4 Allied pilots were lost today, although 9 were wounded and 1 is MIA. The fall of Bataan puts almost 36,000 more Allied troops in the bag for the Empire.

The good news is that the army from Burma is now streaming out of the jungle into Ledo, although the base forces will take a good deal longer. There have been no harassing Imperial air attacks. Akyab airfield scouts as 51% damaged and will like get another dose in two days.

Troops and supplies will begin unloading tomorrow at Umnak and Akutan. There are no pending interruptions seen by naval search.

IJN Turns to LSD

1942-06-09

Taberfane fell today. CV Wasp, BB North Carolina and escorts arrived at the Panama Canal. A few hundred miles north of Truk, USN SS Trout took shots at Imperial LSD Akitsu Maru and scored with dud torpedoes. Meanwhile, I-20 used 2 working torpedoes on AO Guadalupe just off Christmas Island. She had just offload here cargo of fuel to make Pearl Harbor for upgrades. Now she will attempt to make port at Christmas Island and remain afloat.

Heavy bombing of Darwin resumed. The two units remaining there have been fully supplied by submarines from both east and west Australian coasts, and fighters at Katherine and points beyond refuse to respond to sweeps.

This combat was very small but still somehow interesting:
quote:

Ground combat at 84,56 (near Fuchow)

Chungking Bombed

1942-06-10

No bases fell today. Chungking saw the sweeps joined by bombers. The base sustained minor damage and about 4 planes were destroyed on the ground. The fighters were still all stood down both to avoid the sweeps and to make ready. Yesterday there were finally enough supplies in Chungking to upgrade one AVG squadron and take replacements in the two others, although one is still at half strength. The hope is to get them all in the air at once. The attacks on Darwin continue, as do ours on Myitkyina. A run on Akyab is planned for tomorrow.

The Empire is slowly but surely spotting more of our ships in the Aleutians, but troops and engineers finished unloading at Umnak and engineers at Akutan. Combat engineers and troops are on the way to Akutan and troops to Dutch harbor. In two days USMC paras will set up a forward base to worry Adak, and tonight should see heavy cruisers bombard Adak itself.

Pretty fair shooting, but the base was hit more lightly than the invaders themselves!

Aleutians Warming Up

1942-06-11

No bases fell today. The bombing raid on Akyab was grounded by weather, but the sweeps went in and found empty skies. The skies over Chungking were crowded with fighters, but the Imperial bombers stayed home. The Chinese fighters were on duty, and while they took a number of attackers down with them they still got the worst of it.

The bombardment of Adak hit the target, loosing most of its fury on the ground troops.

Excellent work! I've always had a fondness for those Astoria-class CA's. They were the only decently armored heavy cruisers still within the 10,000 ton treaty limit.

Marines Forward

1942-06-12

No bases fell today. More sweeps over Chungking, but no pilots killed. The USMC paratroopers landed via an APD high-speed run on Atka Island without incident. The heavy cruisers are leaving Dutch Harbor for another bombardment run, but that will take place the day after tomorrow due to the distances involved and the need to vary routes to avoid Imperial submarines.

It looks as though the Empire is going to try and pacify the southeastern forests of China.

Min(d)ing a Bombardment

1942-06-13

Hsiang-yang was liberated today. The heavy cruiser group, instead of moving to a position to make a high speed run in to a night bombardment, sailed straight through to Adak. Once there CA Minneapolis hit a mine. Of all the bombardments run against me in WITP and AE, I have never succeeded in getting a hit with a defensive minefield! She is in good enough shape with 27 flotation damage. so, the other two CAs have split off and will try to bombard 'on their way out'.

Better Than It Looked

1942-06-14

Terapo fell today. Great Sitkin Island was liberated. 'The usual' continues, with bombing spread out all over China both destroying supplies and making it much more difficult to build fortifications. Air attacks also continue throughout the Free Philippines. RN SS Trusty surely sank xAK Nojima Maru with two torpedoes near Victoria Point. An Imperial sub has been sighted just west of Diego Garcia, presumably on the resupply route from Africa plus on the farthest on-map route between Australia and India. Heavy sweeping and bombing of Darwin. The Rufes at Adak continue to take a toll on the B-17E models raiding there, with two lost today. The B-17 pilots are good and the planes are stout, so who exactly is flying those float fighters? Three squadrons of B-17D flew in from Pearl Harbor yesterday. When they are ready the B-17E squadrons will be ready, and they will aim to overwhelm Adak's aerial defenses.

The bombardment of Adak went in well for such a small force, which then attacked an I-boat on the way back to Ducth Harbor. Minneapolis and escort made it back to Dutch Harbor, and as pumping out of flooding is going nicely she will proceed directly to Victoria for repairs.
quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Adak Island at 162,52

Allied Ships
CA Vincennes
CA San Francisco

Japanese ground losses:
171 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 13
Port supply hits 1

CA Vincennes firing at Adak Island
CA San Francisco firing at Adak Island

The larger story was the magnitude of the sweeps over Chungking, followed by a well escorted bombing raid. The AVG were not really prepared in material, having a bunch of airplanes still making ready, but were certainly ready in spirit. The combat reports showed that it was a tough day for the Allied Chinese and American defenders. The Air Losses Intel claims that it was even worse for the Empire. Only 3 Allied pilots KIA for the day, and that included 2 B-17E lost over or returning from Adak.

Chungking Redux

1942-06-15

No bases fell today. Intel reports mine sweeping activity at Attu. Imperial maneuvers near Changsha and Ichang have increased. The big news is that today was nearly a repeat of yesterday in the skies over Chungking. Only one Allied pilot KIA today. The AVG are becoming shorn of planes, and again accumulating enough supplies in Chungking to take replacements is unlikely.

Chungking Safe

1942-06-16

No bases fell today. Intel shows heavy mine clearing activity at Bataan. There were no raids on Chungking today!

Search has spotted 3 unidentified ships at Attu. The heavy cruisers are making a high speed bombardment run into Adak tonight, so they should get clear in time if those 3 are warships.

Rufes Rue The Day

1942-06-17

No bases fell today. A CAP ambush over Myitkyina was not impressed with the P-40E sweep designed to deal with it, and shot down a number of Blenheim IV bombers. AO Guadalupe had been steadily putting out fires at the expense of ever increasing systems damage. She slipped beneath the waves in port at Christmas Island, a burned out hulk.

An IJN TF is now spotted 40nm SE Adak and heading E. Allied shipping is pulling out, with the exception of PTs on point defense. B-17s that are ready are moving as well, and a B-26 group with naval attack skill is moving in. The bombardment of Adak had good effect, although the follow up bombing groups still lost one plane to operational issues. Whether it was one of the 5 that were battle-damaged or not can't be known.

Always nice to blow away some engineers -- it looks like having a spotter plane is useful. Any idea how close you've come to closing the airfield?

IIRC scouting this past turn showed 43% or thereabouts damage to the airfield. Presuming scouting base damage is more accurate the turn after more damage is added, maybe it's actually higher. At level 1 it closed at 25% for offensive ops, but you can't do those from a level 1 anyway. Should be 55% for CAP and search, etc, except that he only has water borne craft there AFAIK. I'm focusing on racking up the damage so the base can't make planes ready, and if a seaplane tender moves in I can hope to hit that as well.

I hadn't even focused on the engineers. That is good!

BTW I sent off a 'possible bug' report to Michael. I figure if those Rufe Ops Losses were from battle damage that's fine, but if they're from runway damage well, oops.

Aleutian Advance

1942-06-18

No bases fell today. Now only 1 Imperial unit is scouted at Adak, so perhaps the TF sighted yesterday was performing an evacuation. There are now two Imperial TFs sighted near Adak, one containing a CS.

The infiltration dance goes on in China. There's more groping going on than drive-in movies used to see.

Massacre At Myitkyina

1942-06-19

Little Andaman fell today. Intel believes the minefield at Bataan has been fully cleared. With that, only coast watchers remain on Luzon. Our subs continue to have successes, seldom reported here. Today Grayback sank xAK Osaka Maru near Chichi-jima. Some Nicks and many Oscars beat up on the P-40E sweepers and, to a lesser extent, on the escorts and bombers that went in later over Myitkyina. We lost 4 pilots with another 3 missing and 4 wounded. We'll leave Myitkyina alone for a bit. The B-17s (D & E) achieved only minor damage on Adak but they met no aerial Resistance. Scouting continues to show only 1 Imperial unit present.

Here is an overview map.

The Quiet War

1942-06-20

No bases fell today. The aerial pounding resumed in China, notably each and every raid by unescorted bombers. Darwin also received its usual stomping. AVG fighters have been moved to Kweilin to try and catch some Imperial bombers sans chaperons.

Asia Heats Up Some

1942-06-22

Waichow fell today. CV Wasp pulled into Pearl Harbor today. Another Imperial Navy bombardment group made a call on Chittagong and made a very successful attack. The airfield stands at 34% runway damage and 70% service damage. Valuable P-38E models were the worst loss.

CA Nachi firing at Chittagong

There were 9 of the Lightnings lost along with 2 P-40Es and 3 Hurricane IIb models. The defenders got some licks in, but without apparent effect. Our naval search could be better in this area, but we are still training pilots for that mission. Seeing them would not permit us to hit the raiders in this case anyway.

An ambush was pulled off at Kweilin, netting 14 Lilies. In another surprise move, IJN Zeros showed up in the skies over Chungking looking to avenge the Oscars slaughtered there several days ago. They beat up on Soviet supplied aircraft plus got 2 P-40Es and some Hawks. 3 Zeros are believed taken in return.

USA B-17Ds hit Attu, or rather didn't, but they sure dropped a bunch of bombs. B-17Es hit the port at Adak and sank ACM Tamaura Maru. The IJN TF at Attu is now scouted as 2 x BB and 1 x CL.

The Ghosts of Bengal...

Active Aleutians

1942-06-23

San Jose fell today. The Empire has begun constructing the Internet Wonder. If they finish before the Allies invent EMP units, we're toast. Near Karachi Imperial hero sub I-10 sank a TK and 2 xAKL. All were unescorted. Even in the presence of subs I have found that the heavy air patrols plus very heavy surface ASW patrols have made the escort of routine supply and fuel convoys unnecessary. I-10, however, has shown up when a significant number of small ASW assets are undergoing upgrades. While those upgrades are significantly improving their ASW capability, they also cause the ships to be off line. So today - and perhaps the next few days - are a brief "happy time" for I-10.

There are more heavy IJN units in the Aleutians. The APDs set to unload at Atka are moving out at high speed and various units are clearing the general area. B-17s have relocated. It isn't clear if they are covering forces or hunting/bombardment groups.

I-10 Again

1942-06-24

Po Lo fell today. I-10 claimed another xAKL - surely out of torpedoes now!? One Imperial TF in the Aleutians heading west, the other presumably out of search range.

The East China Sea is Dangerous

1942-06-25

No bases fell today. USN subs got 2 x xAK in the waters between Shanghai and Japan. Chittagong is fully repaired today, the same can not be said for the lost P-38s, but the remaining 17 are operational at Calcutta. Ships operating in the Aleutians really rack up the systems and engine damage.

Here is a look at Central China.

Sweeps Over Chittagong

1942-06-26

No bases fell today. I-10, which was evidently hiding yesterday, claimed another xAKL.

Sweeps and one escorted bombing run swirled in the sky over Chittagong, and the day went ot the Allies. There wasn't even a stiff defense in place. 4 of ours KIA and 5 WIA.

Chungking Swept

1942-06-27

Kao-Yao fell today. I-10 was kept hiding under the surface near Karachi. Imperial sweeps returned to Chungking, taking a toll of both Chinese air and the AVG. Tonies were the stars. Our boys had 4 KIA and 11 WIA.

The squads of the 58th Inf Rgt is ashore at Atka, bolstering the USMC paras there. Their heavy equipment is on a separate convoy trying to sneak in. Enemy held Attu Island will be bombarded tonight. At least that's the plan.
