No, the Burma road closed when they took Rangoon. The manual has a wrong reference where it talks about the "Ledo Road", which is not represented in the game. In-game the Burma road is Rangoon to (I think it's) Tsuyung. Need a continuous supply path, not necessarily all the road hexes.

On the plus side, I do have most of the supply that I shipped in at Lashio, Myitkyina, Warazup, and Katha. There is still more than 3,000 at Shwebo, so I'm hoping most of that moves out tomorrow just after the troops move out. Some supply was captured here and there but I don't think it was too much.

Those pesky daily supply movement caps keep it from moving around very fast, and IIRC Treespider added many caps in areas of Burma that did not have them in Babes or stock. I think it's a good addition. It really does slow down supply movement. I've been working with the supply settings to get as much across the Chinese border as possible. It's a pretty slow flow, but it's still something. And as you say, when they take Lashio that will end.

That recon unit which tried to stop the withdrawal at Meiktila has been parked on the road just outside Lashio for a few days now. Probably they got a good enough look at the defenses in Lashio (not huge but large enough to hold against them) that they decided to await reinforcements. For the past two or three turns I've scouted at least one unit moving north out of Mandalay toward the road to Lashio. The secondary danger after they push out the defenders of Lashio is that an Imperial force could then turn toward the flank of Myitkyina.

Tit for Tat

1942-03-20

Yung-k'ang, Kaocheng, and Yu-shan fell today. Several SigInt "Loaded on Ship" intercepts today at Singapore. It seems the hammer is being prepared for Palembang.

In a bit of tit for tat, I-19 brought down a supply laden xAK Hawaiian on its way to Dutch Harbor while Grampus torpedoed xAK Akagisan Maru in the waters between Chichi-jima and and Marcus Island. There were minor Imperial troop casualties. Grampus also sighted a different convoy and attacked an xAP. The Empire's amphibious landing bonus expires after 17 more days (good through April 6th), so are these routine movements or is Empire looking to make an opposed landing in the Pacific soon?

In about four more days I will have enough PP to free up the 41st Infantry Division. Along with a USMC Rgt it will move to Christmas Island while smaller USMC units take positions on Palmyra. Provided, of course, that they get there before the Empire does.

The Hudsons threw bombs in the general direction of the invaders at Normanton, while the B-17s hit the port for good effect. Forts - and any potential airfield - have ceased building as Imperial engineers are seen running to fix a port they might have no intention of using. The Airedales have orders to pound the port into rubble before giving attention to the troops.

The Return

1942-03-21

Galeia and Huai Yan fell today. The IJA air arm made a return to Burma today, at least their fighters did. A few Allied losses of medium bombers today so we are standing them down unless they hit where fighter support is available. Units are now seen moving into Lashio. The bombers will try to slow them, just to stretch things out and let supplies flow. Allied forces have cleared Shwebo but surprisingly Imperial forces have not entered the town.

A radio transmission source at sea:

Dutch Strike!

1942-03-22

Oosthaven and Lin Tsing fell today.

Perhaps last successful naval strike for the Dutch air forces:
quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Christmas Island IO at 47,102

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 29 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Allied aircraft
139WH-3 x 5
B-339D x 2
75A-7 Hawk x 4

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAK Kiso Maru, Bomb hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
34 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x 139WH-3 bombing from 2000 feet
Naval Attack: 3 x 300 kg SAP Bomb
2 x 139WH-3 bombing from 2000 feet
Naval Attack: 3 x 300 kg SAP Bomb

That radio source in the Marshalls has moved 200nm and is now 3 hexes W of Makin. As it shows up two turns in a row it must be sizable.

This task force popped up off the Australian coast. Commerce raiding or something more serious? Is this the whole force? Is the radio source mentioned above the real thrust and this a diversion?

Gathering at Clark

1942-03-23

Alor and Bandoeng fell today. The pursuit continues in Burma. An Imperial armored unit has caught up with the two base forces and two battalions in the last clear terrain hex. They might make the jungle tomorrow, but it will be a near thing.

There has been a noticeable change at Clark Field. For a long time after the siege began the Imperial forces AV was around or under 1,200. Several days ago it was over 1,400, and today it is scouted (during bombardment) as 1,705. Due to constant heavy bombing and daily artillery bombardment the Allies' supply cache is down to somewhat over 14,000. It seems the Empire's analysts have divined the timing and are preparing to begin assaults. How soon they plan to start is anybody's guess.

Meanwhile, the IJN strolls down the coast...

Nah. She couldn't fly any off and was sunk outright by the two additional torpedoes before reaching Koepang.

1941-01-14

Kuantan and Sandakan fell today. IJN carriers are nowhere to be seen. Either that sighting yesterday was a false alarm, or search missed them in the scattered rain and overcast throughout the Banda Sea and surrounding areas.

The wounded ships are doing OK, although I suppose Enterprise took on more systems damage, signified by this gruesome report.
quote:

Damage Control parties trapped in flooded compartment aboard CL Enterprise ...

Kendari held against another attack, but I believe that only 1 or 2 of the 5 units now present participated as the others must have arrived this turn, and could not have received orders to attack.
quote:

Ground combat at Kendari (70,106)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 3278 troops, 28 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 188

Defending force 1282 troops, 14 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 37

Japanese adjusted assault: 39

Allied adjusted defense: 23

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
136 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 15 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
214 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 15 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
Yokosuka 1st SNLF
1st Raiding Regiment
Sasebo 2nd SNLF
Sasebo 1st SNLF
Yokosuka 3rd SNLF

Defending units:
Kendari Garrison Battalion
2/2nd Ind Coy
Kendari Base Force

With no minuses for the attackers the entire force would not have been reduced to less than 25% AV. The next attack will take the base. Aircraft will leave and the Australian commando company will be flown out.

Imperial fighter sweeps over Moulmein were annoyingly effective, and enemy ships are seen SW of Lae. Bombing of Singkawang is pausing to rest the air crews. The Empire now has strike aircraft at Jahore Bahru, so bombing Singkawang will have less effect than before. B-17s will be relocated to Soerabaja and Koepang to commence bombing of Kendari once it falls.

witpqs -

Would you please explain the comment in bold; I think that I may have missed something.

Very good work - your PH area surface combat Fur Ball really inspired me to leave timidity behind and hit hard in my pbem.

Well done, Sir!

Mac

Wow - that was so long ago I really had to think about it! OK, looking at that Kendari attack, the combat modifiers were:
quote:

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

You see that the attackers had no modifiers at all, no pluses and no minuses.

Even so, the attackers saw their AV reduced from an unadjusted 188 to an adjusted 39. So they were cut down to less than 25% - but was that a real reduction? Sometimes you see attackers and/or defenders with their AV getting adjusted by large amounts. But in this case I believe something else happened, and I was in tune with it because I was watching the enemy units marching along turn after turn on their way to Kendari. I believe that there were only 1 or 2 enemy units in the Kendari hex when Treespider issued his attack orders during the orders phase. The other 3 (or 4) were still moving, still outside the Kendari hex.

Because movement happens before combat during turn resolution, those 3 (or 4) units finished their movement and made it into the Kendari hex, then combat was resolved. The way the game engine does things, it shows you the AV of all the units present when it shows the unadjusted AV. That "188" was the AV of all the units present, including the ones that just marched in that very turn. The adjusted AV of 39 was for the 1 or 2 units that Treespider had ordered to attack (because they were the only ones in the hex when he gave his orders). Of course the "39" was after being adjusted by all the random die rolls that the game uses.

Make sense? If not, I'll take another whack at it.

> Yes! It does!

Glad your enjoying the show!

> Very much so, Sir! No skulking around on your or TreeSpider's account; it's a go for the throat furball!

> I am so fired up - by your example, my honorable opponent had better stand by - cause I am a gonna break out another can of whupass! <hope I didn't break any forum rules; got a bit carried away....>

Thank you for the explanation - yet another part of "how the mechanics of the game system work" puzzle has been explained!

An Enlightened Mac

Bataan Landing

1942-03-24

Djambi, Li-shui, and Taming fell today. The four Allied units fleeing to the jungles of Northern Burma did not make it to the jungle today, but fortunately they were not attacked! They will all four definitely make the cover of the jungle tomorrow. That IJN TF continues to troll of the western coast of Australia, now moving a west of its previous position.

In a surprise and very astute move Imperial troops have landed at Bataan. Due to short supplies, Clark has some - now down to ~13,500 - but Bataan has none. As a result there was no fire from the otherwise devastating gun emplacements. Mines did hit 3 landing barges (LB) although no troop casualties were observed.

Heavy air attacks on Java and Palembang (the only Allied outpost left on Sumatra) and a closing noose on Java have almost destroyed the ability of Dutch air units to mount offensive strikes. Almost.
quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Benkoelen at 45,91

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 23 NM, estimated altitude 5,000 feet.

Naval Attack: 3 x 300 kg SAP Bomb
2 x 139WH-3 bombing from 2000 feet

That attack did not hit home, but curiously there was no fighter opposition encountered. As the noose on their last bases is closing, Dutch flying boats were all released to attack duties. Some still searching to find targets, but all groups with Naval Attack orders at 1,000ft. The lack of fighter cover at Benkoelen had consequences.

Breathing in Burma

1942-03-25

Djailolo, Feng-hsien, and Pucheng fell today. Billiton was invaded. The USN subs continue to find targets, including tankers, and sometimes their torpedoes explode. This day Grayback found a tanker but was lacking for luck with the torpedoes. Tuna found xAK Tensyo Maru and hit her with 3 good torpedoes and 2 deck gun shells. The IJN hunter group has left air search range off of Australia. Palembang is down to about 700 AV owing all to bombing as supplies are still at a plentiful 68,000+.

In Burma, the last to withdraw have made it to the jungle. Lashio is assured of facing overwhelming odds when the main Imperial force arrives, but holds now to let supplies flow away toward safe areas. Lashio is down to 5,500 supplies.

The balance does not seem right for a return shock attack - especially given the terrain - so the defenders of Clark shall sit tight to hold out as long as possible. There are Imperial reinforcements seen coming in from Iba, and some units leaving Clark, presumably to rebuild.

Here is an overview map.

Kalemyo Threatened

1942-03-27

Sansapor fell today. The Empire conducted further landings at Bataan, and the mines again did good work in the absence of ammo for the guns. An Imperial unit was seen to moving NW from the road north of Shwebo, in the direction of Kalemyo. We can't afford too much to defend those farthest frontier bases just yet, so we will likely have to fight along the border for some time to come.

The Imperial movements of troops in and out of Clark is still taking place, so this snapshot is probably as good a view as we will get of the effects of yesterday's attack.

Lashio Falls

1942-03-29

Lolobato and Lashio fell today. Batavia withstood another assault but one defending unit was destroyed. Alarmingly, Imperial troops are seen moving toward the Chinese border with Burma.

Here you see a rare inland naval bombardment!

Burma is Tough on Morale

1942-03-30

No bases changed hands today. The Allied forces driven out of Lashio withstood a shock attack by the pursuing armored units.

A very strange combat at Batavia. The defenders are up against it and will last only as long as the attackers need to rest between attacks. Today this happened:

It sort of looks like one unit was left with attack orders while the rest were not. And judging from the squads destroyed it must have been a very depleted unit.

A view of upper Burma.

April Fool's Eve

1942-03-31

Waigeo, Batavia, and Buitenzorg, and Tung Ping fell today. Dutch forces fell back to Merak, but now they lack supplies. The ex-defenders of Lashio were partly retreated, but the 1st Gloucestershire Battalion held its ground, buying precious time.

A sub popped up and made a torpedo attack in Adelaide Harbor! ASW groups are on duty in the area with more on the way. Mine sweeping is being stepped up.

Convoys are on the way to Christmas Island and Palmyra. Fighters have staged to Hilo for the flight direct to Palmyra.

It looks like we are winning the naval war so far.

No Fools Fall For Adelaide Mine Field

1942-04-01

No bases changed hands today. Koumac was invaded. Sure enough a minefield has been identified at Adelaide. Sweeping continues. Many USN ships began upgrades today.

There are two Imperial subs identified off of Brisbane, and of course that surface force that cruised near Geraldton recently could indeed have been to draw Allied naval reaction westward. EHQ is cautious about security for the invasion of Noumea.

French Base Falls

1942-04-02

Koumac and Bhamo fell today. The Empire pursues into upper Burma both on the road from Shwebo and on the road from Lashio.

Here is the list of IJN ships sunk from Tracker. Certainly several ships are still not on there, including 2 or 3 of the AOs brought down near Hawaii. Kongo is still listed even thought I believe her afloat, and Hyuga should be on the list but is not.

EDIT: Actually, only 2 of the AOs on the list are from the Hawaii fracas and I believe there were 6 or 7 of those. So, as many as 5 more to show up.

Three Squeezes

1942-04-03

Tsining and Kian fell today. The Empire is working to clean up the northern plains and is also swinging around to threaten the Changsha area from the south. Meanwhile the convoys bound for the Line Islands make swift progress, and Australia is fairly stuffed with Allied air power.

The three squeezes are Clark, Palembang, and Burma. The Chase is still on in Burma, too.

Normanton Doomed

1942-04-04

No bases fell today. The chase continues in Burma, with at least one Imperial unit now seen moving to bypass Katha and cut off the defenders. The Empire's move in China is likewise a concerted effort with a whole body of forces shifting southward to bring its weight to bear.

Meanwhile, the Allies continues general preparations in Australia. The splinter at Normanton is being contained and will eventually be destroyed, but not at the expense of being prepared for a dangerous thrust.

Java Lost, Coffee Prices Skyrocket

1942-04-05

Merak fell today. More than 16,000 Allied troops were taken prisoner. The chase in Burma continues, and the rush to secure the Indian border area. Australia based forces continue to isolate the Normanton splinter and array primarily air forces against it. The sea train sails on to the Line Islands. Everywhere logistics and training motions are at a fever pitch.

In Central China the maneuvering is sure to lead to a widespread clash.

Invasion India!

1942-04-07

Imphal and Hsu-chang fell today. Imphal was seized by elements of the 2nd Raiding Rgt from the air.

Timing is everything. The 70th UK Div is already on its way to Imphal but still several days away by rail and then road strategic movement. Now, of course, they will have to march from Dimapur instead of strat move. Likewise, the 3rd Carabiniers Rgt has already passed through Imphal on its way to Kalemyo in an attempt to get there before an Imperial recon unit moving through the jungle. So now the question is, do we turn around the 3rd to attack Imphal ASAP, or continue on to ward Kalemyo and let the 70th roll over Imphal? The 3rd shall head back, the way paved by air strikes to prevent fortification.

The Eve of Rebuffs

1942-04-08

No bases fell today. Possibly seeing additional Chinese troops on the way, the Empire attacked at Pingsiang. They ran into a casualty ratio greater than 35 to 1.
quote:

Ground combat at Pingsiang (82,54)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Allied ground losses:
35 casualties reported

6th Construction Regiment
20th Chinese Corps
79th Chinese Corps
4th Chinese/C Corps
67th Chinese/B Corps
29th Group Army
14th Chinese Base Force

The Chinese host will attack tomorrow.

The 194th Tank Bn has quietly made the journey from Clark Field to Bataan and tomorrow will attack the Imperial unit fragment landed there to prevent retreat.

The 3rd Carabiniers Rgt has reached Imphal and also will attack tomorrow. The Allied air armada will concentrate on the invaders to aid the attack.

BC Repulse reached the US East Coast today and is joining USN BBs West Virginia and Oklahoma in dry dock.

The Imperial troops moving on the ground are making progress in their maneuver to out flank the Allied defenders at Katha. The 44th Indian Bde will move back to hold the door open, but the strength of the flankers is unknown, and our own troops are partly paper tigers.

A Mixed Bag on the Ground

1942-04-09

La Foa and Loyang fell today. Loyang went down to a river-crossing shock attack. Wenchow held its ground, but lost some fortification.

The Chinese shock attack at Pingsiang went well, even though a third Imperial unit arrived for the battle.
quote:

Ground combat at Pingsiang (82,54)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 34716 troops, 158 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1561

22nd/C Division

The combat report is a bit misleading as two of the Chinese corps only arrived this turn and did not participate in the attack, even though their AV was counted in the 1,561 total.

At Imphal things went differently, with the 3rd Carabiniers Rgt achieving only 1 to 5 odds. They sustained no casualties and destroyed one enemy squad. It's clear that Empire brought in more of the para unit, so the 3rd shall wait for the 70th.

At Bataan the attack on the fragment went well, but the results were tiny. Repeated applications are needed. The Empire managed to attack today while the 194th Tank Bn is away, but it didn't help much.

Free-Flying Fliers

1942-04-10

Fang-chen and Wenchow fell today. That Imperial unit fragment which had been landed at Bataan was wiped out by attrition after todays attack. Some of our B-17 units in India had incomplete orders, leading to commanders' discretion airfield attacks on Taung Gyi and Moulmein. At Moulmein 3 Imperial aircraft were destroyed on the ground, 2 engineers disabled, and 5 base supply hits scored in addition to some base and runway damage. A happy mistake!

Nookanbah, on the road inland from Derby, was reconnoitered by air.

The Empire launched a series of ground bombardments in China in the general area of Changsha, presumably to provide EHQ more information about the Chinese deployments that the Imperial units face. The Chinese are going to attack at once in the rough-forest near Wuchang. See graphic.

Pakanbaroe fell today, but Normanton will be liberated tomorrow. The Imperial force at Normanton made a desperate shock attack on the liberators today, and were destroyed. It is clear that most of the unit was evacuated or never landed.

Bring Little Friends Next Time!

1942-04-12

Normanton and Puyang were liberated today. Noumea will likely fall tomorrow as an Imperial unit has marched into town.

The Empire is moving back toward the eastern route into Changsha, especially after the failed Chinese attack yesterday. There is still another unit moving against that army, and now units are moving across the open terrain toward the forest behind them (and next to Changsha). As part of this effort Imperial bombers struck at those same engaged troops near Wuchang. Luckily for the Allies they arrived without escort in two separate attacks, one of Sonias and one of Lillies. The score for the AVG was 25 to 0.

1942-04-13

Tambelan-eilanden and Yen-cheng fell today. La Foa was liberated. Noumea surprisingly held its ground, the Imperial troops of the 4th Indpt SNLF Coy being too few for the task. With Ls Foa declaring for the Allies the Imperial troops will receive no further supplies by land.

The third turnabout of the day took place at Tang-ho (GR86,46) just outside of Nanyang. The Chinese host there had been moving NE to intercept Imperial units flanking it toward Nanyang. Subsequently when a small number of units were seen pursuing from the direction of Sinyang, the Chinese host reduced its movement speed (combat mode versus move mode) in hopes that the pursuers would catch up in vulnerable strength. The, the flankers to the NE were reinforced with more on the way, so course was changed toward Nanyang and the bolster of friendly fortifications. Speed of march was kept slow. Yesterday the pursuers did catch up. Given accurate scouting (always chancy!), it seemed only physically possible for one other unit to reinforce them, that being one coming up the road behind them. Considering that and the unit count of the pursuers who had caught up, the march was halted and a shock attack ordered. With the fortunate destruction of Imperial bombers yesterday, all Chinese bombers and the two AVG squadrons in China were diverted to support the attack and slow down the additional unit pursuing. The Imperial pursuers conducted a bombardment attack, which was quickly followed by the Chinese all-out attack.

Palembang withstood a deliberate attack but barely held 1 to 1 odds and will not last long. No facilities were destroyed during the attack.

Dangers

1942-04-14

Tapul fell today. Clark Field is running short of supply, with less than 2,000 remaining in base stores. Palembang will not hold long (but did today) and has more than 58,000 with some having been shipped in from Cape Town.

Imperial forces are pressing hard to cut off that Chinese army near Wuchang. Likewise to cut off the Allied army in Upper Burma (see graphic). The 70th UK Div is two days out from Imphal and will counter attack on the 3rd day.

No evidence on the whereabouts of the KB or other major IJN fleet elements.

French Revolt!

1942-04-15

Great Sitkin and Katha fell today. A reconnaissance bombardment revealed that the Imperial troops at Noumea might be overcome by the defenders, especially with no ground-based resupply possible.

Attacking force 766 troops, 17 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 28

Defending force 263 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 7

Assaulting units:
New Caledonia Det

Defending units:
4th Indpt SNLF Coy

They attack tomorrow.

70th British Div moved slower than anticipated and will take another two days to reach Imphal. The Imperial forces there continue to build up, now shown at 1,660 troops and 2 guns. The aerial suppresion have surely prevented all but basic fort building and likely even that.
