The Grind Goes On and On and On and On

1942-05-10

La Foa was liberated today. The Zeros came back to Katherine today and this time they got 4 P-40Bs, but it cost them 12 Zeros. Myitkyina was bombed for 4 supply hits and shows at 32% airfield damage.

Here is a view of Burma.

Striking Back

1942-05-11

No bases fell today. SS Pompano spotted BBs Kirishima and Hiei in company with CA Tone and CL Abukuma and destroyers at GR:122,93 (near Marcus Island). As part of the landing at Umnak to build a major air base, USN BBs bombarded Adak Island.
quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Adak Island at 162,52

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
H6K4 Mavis: 1 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
BB Mississippi
BB New Mexico
BB Idaho

Japanese ground losses:
626 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 11 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 8 destroyed, 8 disabled

Airbase hits 11
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 15
Port hits 5
Port supply hits 1

BB Mississippi firing at Adak Island
BB New Mexico firing at Adak Island
BB Idaho firing at Adak Island

All Allied troops and engineers have unloaded at Umnak Island, and a coast artillery Bn is now commencing unloading. The fighter strip is operational for P-40Es and a recon unit has also moved in and will take a look at Adak Island. When the airfield is size 2 a squadron of B-26s will move in and begin steady bombing of Adak.

Allied bombings of Myitkyina and troops present continues, and the Imperial forces there are clearly seen advancing on Warazup to catch our withdrawing army. Imperial bombings of Port Blair have increased. No Imperial fighter sweeps outside of China this day.

Not bad for old 14-inch battlewagons! How much enemy air activity is apparent in the area?

So far I have only seen those Mavis search out of Adak. Nothing that I have noted from Attu. BTW, those are all the same class of 16-inchers, old though they be!

Your old 16-inchers would be West Virginia, Maryland, and Colorado. The actual 14-inch ships that did the shelling fire only 1400-pound shells instead of 2000-pounders. The good news is they have twelve main guns as compared to only eight for the 16-inchers.

Doh! Yes they are. I think I had just been looking at some of the 16 inch boys in the repair yards or something.

No Sweeps!

1942-05-12

No bases fell today. The Empire is sending one unit to flank the Chinese army investing Ichang, but it's going to the north. Presumably the intent is to gain that hex, then move into Ichang thereby taking ownership of the hex side within Ichang. Another unit is moving back toward open country on the road to Ankang. Happily, there were no Imperial fighter sweeps today outside of China, where Imperial air power currently reigns supreme due to the shortage of supplies.

Only 7 units at Clark Field have more than 100 supply, and none as much as 200.

Imperial ships spotted at Koumac. Are they reinforcing? Withdrawing? Resupplying?

The Road to Stability

1942-05-13

Rambutyo fell today. The withdrawal from Burma continues, and while so far the pursuit has not caught up they surely will. The Empire is also moving additional troops in Ichang, up to 5 units. The airfield on Umnak Island is more than 70% toward size 2. Adak is about 35% airfield and 15% port damage. We should be able to commence bombing before they resume building.

Here is a view of the Aleutians.

Ichang Cha Cha

1942-05-14

No bases fell today.

Imperial troops crossed the river to Ichang, and with the disparity in AV in that city they made the obligatory river-crossing shock attack.
quote:

Ground combat at Ichang (83,48)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 5773 troops, 219 guns, 46 vehicles, Assault Value = 968

Defending force 106730 troops, 548 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2922

Japanese adjusted assault: 0

Allied adjusted defense: 1387

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 99

Combat modifiers
Defender: preparation(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
3690 casualties reported
Squads: 144 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 136 destroyed, 35 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
179 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Assaulting units:
13th Division
39th Division
59th/A Division
2nd Mortar Battalion
11th Army
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
11th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion
1st Mortar Battalion
12th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion
15th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
26th Field Artillery Regiment
20th Ind. Mtn Gun Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
51st Field Const Co
67th JAAF AF Coy

Defending units:
30th Chinese Corps
8th Chinese Corps
77th Chinese Corps
3rd Chinese Cavalry Corps
2nd Chinese Corps
73rd Chinese Corps
32nd Chinese Corps
5th Chinese Cavalry Corps
75th Chinese Corps
53rd Chinese Corps
39th Chinese Corps
56th Chinese/C Corps
20th Group Army
26th Group Army
6th War Area
33rd Group Army

What is surprising is the ratio of squads destroyed. The AV difference is great, but I still would expect a large number of disablements. Comparing the combat reports from yesterday and today, the 59th/A Division is the only unit that moved into the city. It certainly shock attacked alone, so that level of casualties must have almost wiped it out.

An undetermined number of Imperial units are now seen withdrawing from Ichang. However, others are making an encirclement to the south having cleared the swamp of Chinese troops.

Dutch Harbor airfield is 0+85% and Umnak Island airfield is 2+1%. A squadron of B-26s has moved in and will rest for one or two turns to reduce fatigue before commencing operations. Adak Island now scouts as 37% & 20% for airfield and port damage, so the naval bombardment damaged the tiny base even worse than early reports indicated.

Here is the pursuit in Upper Burma.

Sub War, Karachi!

1942-05-15

No bases fell today. Several submarine versus escorts battles near Karachi, and a minefield laid there. I-123 is believed hit 8 times for heavy damage, then 1 more. AMc Karachi (ironically) was destroyed when it struck a mine during clearing operations. I-124 was hit 3 times but also torpedoed KV Genista, sinking her. At the end of the day the Intel monkeys think I-123 sunk.

At GR:83,53, two hexes ESE of Changsha, Chinese reinforcements have moved in and the tally from the Imperial bombardment shows the Empire's forces at 1,001 AV and the Allied forces at 4,402. The Allies actually have slightly less, but probably so do the Imperialists. The terrain is x3 for defense, but we shock attack tomorrow.

Four Imperial units are seen NE of Ichang, up from two. The additional troops were not seen moving in. The unit in the swamp SE of Ichang is still moving west. So it seems the Empire seeks to fully envelop the Chinese forces investing the city. If the Allied attack near Changsha (mentioned above) succeeds then perhaps that will dissuade the Empire from advancing too far near Ichang.

There are now 8 IJA units at Warazup and the the Allies withdrawing still have a long way to go. Allied air will switch from hitting ground troops plus the Myitkyina airfield to all hitting ground troops.

At Clark Field there are only a slightly smaller number of units with zero supply than the number of units with any supply at all. Soon most will be out of of supply.

The waters off Karachi are heavily swept by air search and ASW groups:

The Empire is Strong

No bases fell today. The attack near Changsha went poorly. The size of the force should prevent it being wrecked in a return attack.

The biggest problem is that all of the combat formations are at 44 or 45 miles traveled while the base forces and AA unit are still in the 30s. So, unless the combat forces stop moving they will exit the hex and the base forces will be mauled next turn. Orders issued are as such: Combat formations will continue moving and exit the hex pronto. Base forces will continue moving and exit the hex ASAP, getting mauled is optional. Some combat forces and base forces did leave the hex just before the Imperial attack.

Here is a look at China.

Base Forces Flee

1942-05-17

Two IJN cruisers bombarded the Cocos Islands and sank the HDML defending the area. An Imperial bombardment at Warazup revealed that only base forces and AA remained at the end of the day. It's doubtful that any of them will clear the hex tomorrow, but they will try. Recon of Koumac shows no Imperial occupiers, although it is being performed by patrol craft not trained in recon. An Australian Commando unit is already on the way overland to investigate.

Here is an overview map.

Base Forces Hold

1942-05-18

Talasea fell today. Fang-chen was liberated. "APD Lawrence hits Type 88 Mine at Kodiak" - The Empire continues vigorous mine warfare (Lawrence is in bad shape in port at Kodiak now). TK Genota went down to I-2 near Kingscote. Here convoy was escorted, but some of the available escorts are barely fit to be called such. The defenders at Clark Field withstood another attack. Although the casualty ratio is still in their favor, vital supplies were chewed up. There are now only two units at Clark with more than 100 supply on hand, and fully half have zero.

Invasion Port Blair

1942-05-19

No bases fell today. Only two Allied base forces were caught in Warazup as the Empire looks to have dedicated at least one additional unit to its attack, and made it an all-out (shock) attack. The two base forces took heavy casualties, over 1,700, but managed to retreat.

One of our subs attempted to intercept a large enemy convoy well over 100 miles SE of Port Blair but was driven off by the heavy escort. The Imperial Guards Division is landing along with a port unit.
quote:

12 troops of a IJA HMG Section lost overboard during unload of Imperial Guards Div /4
17 troops of a IJA Std Inf Squad accidentally lost during unload of Imperial Guards Div /6
15 Support troops lost from landing craft during unload of Imperial Guards Div /7

The heavy losses on landing must be the consequence of using xAK type ships without the Imperial amphibious bonus.

The bombing of Adak Island proceeds, with no flights yesterday but both the Hudsons and Marauders hitting the port and airfield today. A good attack for long-term softening up:

Crisis at Port Blair

1942-05-20

No bases fell today. Port Blair endured a shock attack by the Imperial Guards Division. They held, but that won't last very long. Disruption and morale were both against them after daily air attacks over the long term and the heavy naval bombardments of the last two days.

In the good news category battleship Prince of Wales came back on line at Cape Town, and CVE Long Island arrived at Balboa.

Akyab Falls

1942-05-21

Akyab and Hsiang-yang fell today. There was no indication of any enemy units at Akyab, so the capture must have been triggered by unseen combat units marching through the jungle. Bombers will commence strikes to close the airfield at once.

An attack at Clark Field was held back.

This was the first time that the adjusted AV of the Allied forces was lower than the adjusted AV of the Imperial forces. Both the adjusted and unadjusted AV of the Allied forces fell precipitously from the prior battle. The end could be as soon as the next battle.

New Caledonia Celebration Tomorrow

1942-05-24

No bases fell today. APD Lawrence, which hit a mine a number of days ago at Kodiak, finally succumbed to massive fires that couldn't be quenched. Heavy fighter opposition met the raid on Akyab airfield today, so the bombers will stand down tomorrow. Several P-40E squadrons make Karachi in two or three days. With fully trained pilots they should help the air war. Koumac has been found to be unoccupied by the Australian 2/7 Independent Commando Company and should be liberated tomorrow (as Imperial tax collectors and such are rounded up).

The Empire seems quite interested in Ichang and environs, perhaps even into the interior of the Middle Kingdom.

xAKL Beats SS

1942-05-27

No bases fell today. The captain of SS O24 is returning to port for repairs with his tail between his legs. Enough said.

It seems the IJN bombardment force that hit Umnak Island came in far north around search coverage. All damage to the base has been repaired, and the Imperial fuel burned was worth more than the two aircraft destroyed, all in all a successful rope-a-dope.

Among the defenders at Clark Field only 8 units have any supplies on hand at all. Here is an overview map.

2 units were destroyed and 35 units retreated to Bataan. They will last just about as long as it takes the Imperial troops to march there. Their unadjusted AV is 401, no supplies at the base, and all of the units put together have a total of 1 supply. Fortifications are at level 2, but even still the first attack should bring a mass surrender.

Distant Stirrings

1942-05-29

No Bases fell today. The last few days have seen a load of maintenance - pilot training, movement of squadrons, movement of LCUs, etc. June 1st will bring a ton of squadron withdrawals. Many are in Australia, so some effort has gone into making certain that possible para-drop targets are protected.

At least one Imperial unit was seen moving down Burma in the direction of Rangoon. Perhaps troops will reinforce Akyab by ship? Several Allied squadrons will be arriving in range of the Burma border over the next few days, including three full P-40E units. Just a few days later the P-38E squadron currently at Bombay will be filled out and ready to begin sweep duties after deploying forward. Together they should allow the bombing of Akyab to resume with better effect. If the IJN shows up to bring troops into Akyab, the newly increased numbers of Allied fighters might also enable the Vildebeests to get a few torpedoes on target.

An IJN xAP was also seen at Attu Island, although it's unclear if they bring troops or remove them. Regiments that have been preparing for the liberation of the Aleutians are being brought forward to Dutch Harbor and Umnak Island to stiffen their defense while they finish their preparation. Additional air groups have been brought north, and while fully trained in ground attack they are training in naval attack. A second PBY group was also brought up and will deploy to Cold Bay as soon as a pair of AVDs makes port. An additional base will be prepared behind Dutch Harbor as a contingency airfield should Umnak be invaded. The USN battleship force is at Bremerton awaiting June upgrades, while its destroyers are finishing their April upgrades. The DDs will escort the aforementioned troops deploying forward while the BBs upgrade. A force of CLs and DDs is nearing Dutch harbor, but would likely be pulled back if the heavy Imperial force makes another sortie.

Stirrings and Arrivals

1942-05-30

No Bases fell today. O19 and O20 laid mines at Port Blair, but O19 was attacked and damaged. There is no indication that O20 was spotted, so the event might be interpreted as a sub attack (which did occur) rather than a mine laying run. Many units arrived, including some nice Australian base forces for NE Australia. Tomorrow many air units will withdraw. SigInt says the 54th Division is loaded aboard a ship at Saipan. But are they embarking or disembarking?

The Chinese force at Ichang continues to be maneuvered against, and now a force of unknown composition is moving on Changsha.

Departures

1942-05-31

Yen-cheng fell today. The operation to liberate it even temporarily freed a pathway for perhaps 1,000 tons of supply to flow from the four producing towns which had been cut off. 19 air groups withdraw for the coming day (this orders phase).

Scouting reports show the Imperial army moving toward the woods outside Changsha is a substantial force.

The Quiet

1942-06-01

No bases fell today. The Imperial army has arrived at GR:83,52 just outside Changsha, and one more IJA unit is on the way. We have 1,779 AV there with another 315 arriving tomorrow. This might simply be a fixing force, with the main thrust coming at Ichang to isolate and destroy that army, or even penetrate through to Patung and points beyond.

The Aleutians
+ One regiment and one combat engineer unit are loaded at Seattle and will rendezvous with the destroyers from Bremerton and proceed to Umnak. An I-boat has been sighted about 80nm W of Victoria, so an evasive route will be used.
+ A USMC Para Bn is already at sea on APDs and will forward deploy to Atka Island just 80nm E of Adak. Their job will be to hold the base - a potential level 5 airfield - until engineers and additional troops can arrive. If Atka Island begins operating as a tactical airbase then Adak Island will be untenable for the Empire. The convoy will refuel at Kodiak and then proceed to a point ESE Atka, making a high-speed run from there.
+ An engineer unit is a few days out from Akutan Island, a potential level 4 airfield 20nm NE of Dutch Harbor. They will construct fortifications and then commence building the airfield as a contingency in case the Empire mounts a major offensive against Umnak Island.
+ A defensive minefield will be laid tomorrow at Umnak Island.
+ Offensive minefields are being laid by submarines at Adak Island and Attu Island.
+ Further units will be brought forward as mention previously, as escorts are available (the same destroyers guarding the present Umnak convoy).

Maneuvers in China

1942-06-02

No bases fell today. The minefields have been placed at Adak and Attu. Let's see what they catch. The minefield at Port Blair was discovered yesterday so probably will do no damage to Imperial shipping.

B-17s hit Adak to day and found the enemy fighters present to be Rufes. They managed to leave the airfield with 10% damage, and after today's raid the two squadrons will alternate one each day to keep up the pressure.

The Imperial host at GR:83,52 is five solid divisions, 1,924 AV versus our 2,101 AV. The terrain is x2, and most of the Chinese units have fortifications built. Still, that balance is dangerously close and the Empire might break through, especially as they have another unit on the way. In spite of that, the Imperial troops are withdrawing, including the unit that was still approaching. Three of the "police units" that had reconstituted at Chungking began today making their way NE from Changsha to threaten encirclement of the Imperial army, albeit a very weal encirclement. Did this threat dissuade the Empire? They might have had little Intel on exactly what is on the move.

Mysterious Maneuvers

1942-06-03

No bases fell today. The minefield at Port Blair is either gone or mostly so due to the Empire sweeping efforts. No victims known, but perhaps it slowed them down a bit. The minefields at Adak and Attu remain undiscovered so far as the Intel monkeys can tell.

The Imperial maneuvers continue apace in China. The only thing really clear is the increasing pressure on the forces at Ichang. The constant bombing is hell on supplies all over China, too. Getting one AVG squadron to take replacements and the other to upgrade to a new plane type (the H81-A3 pool being exhausted) has proved impossible. Moving them to India for upgrade would requite paying PP, something I am loath to do with their withdrawal date of July 4. Now that there are several USA squadrons deployed on the Burma India frontier, the third AVG squadron will redeploy to China. Perhaps in two days all three AVG squadrons can pull off an ambush on some unescorted Imperial bombers. The good news is that those Chinese troops being bombarded constantly by the Empire's artillery have gained nicely in experience, far beyond what they could gain in more than two years of training. The Chinese army at Ichang, for example:

No bases fell today. In China there have been several changes in Imperial actions and dispositions. Forces near Changsha were only bomber lightly. Perhaps weather was an issue, but bombing in China was light overall compared to recent experience. Imperial AV dropped in Ichang, from well over 1,600 to 1,200+. No artillery bombardment at GR:83,53, which had been a fixture for months. Combined with the recent movements noted, there is clearly some major redeployment of Imperial assets underway. Just what that is we must determine before the critical time. They do seem to be driving on Kanshien, which has been lightly defended and will remain so.

The Aleutians.
