What are the best altitude settings for which missions and pilot skill?

I'm quite new to this game and am only starting to experiment, however I am involved in a few pbem games that take up all my available time so I'm forced to use the efault alt settings.

advice is most welcome.

Strat..

I fly my D3A's and B5N's at 15000 feet and my A6M2's at 18000. Since Dive bombers and torpedo bombers take flak twice ( once at their altitude and once at 500 or 200 feet for DB or TB ) it makes no sense to put them low.

That sounds like good advice to me. What about for medium bombers/heavy bombers, especially when they are attacking airfields/ground/ports?

I use my heavy bombers (as U.S.) only for strategic bombing.
I set them on an altitude level where flak damaged is reduced on minimal (e.g. 20 000 - 25 000 ft). I don´t care abaout interceptors since I use big wings (4 - 6 squadrons), which can defend themselves.
I don´t hope for one big attack but count on continous damgage and attention the opponent is forced to.

My recon heavy bombers fly at 12k or 20k altitude, depending on whether enemy flak and/or CAP are located at the destination. I assume that altitude has an impact on the quality of recon and the ability of locating the target during poor weather ... I'll need to test this assumption, though.
