Opening phase of the Second Naval Battle of Camranh Bay

A few notes regarding the battle -
- I had considered combining all the screenshots, but considering how much of Kirk's artwork is involved, and how much effort he has put into it, I'm showing them individually. I sent the screenshots to Kirk before he left on holiday (there is a bit of a delay between the action and the AAR posts), and some of his subsequent artwork contributions was based on this.
- I watched the battle over a span of 4 hours, because I was at work and watching it between breaks. Needless to say, it was quite nerve-wracking.
- The Japanese were fortunate to have a large port nearby. Had they not, more then half a dozen ships, including 3 BBs, would have sunk. I know this is cold comfort for the the Allies, but for what its worth a number of major fleet units were knocked out of action for awhile. Japan at this point in the game had a port full of broken ships which desperately needed to get to shipyards through submarine-infested waters.
- The aircraft which attacked included grounded planes from the CV Shokaku, which was badly damaged after being torpedoed early in the Indochina campaign.
- I actually got a lump in my throat when 3 aerial torpedoes slammed into the BB Arizona. Talk about destiny fulfilled!

This AAR will be on temporary hiatis while Connfire waits for his electricity to be restored after Hurricane Irene. He and his family are fine, with no major damage to the homestead. Hopefully it won't be long before we can return to the mayhem. .

At an undisclosed location within the British Southeast Asian Colony, the highest-ranking surviving French Colonial Army Officer (Lt. Col. G. Langlade) provided the following narrative to the media concern the Fall of Saigon: "It was a brutal affair, with no quarter expected or given by the combatants of each side. The endless ground assaults, coupled with unhindered naval bombardments, forced the Colonial forces to live underground like vermin....... lest they be destroyed by a superior well-supplied enemy. French Colonial forces conducted themselves with élan similar in caliber to our great victory @ Verdun over a decade ago. Unfortunately, our forces were left without aid or support from our supposed Allies! Attempts to surrender the fortress to the Japanese with honor were ignored, with our white flag armed comrades being butchered and cut to pieces by our savage Samurai-like opponents. Those of us who could........ escaped into the jungle to avoid being hacked to death by our uncivilized opponents. I myself saw women...... and children (as he chocked back tears) hacked to death with swords by Japanese soldiers piece-by-piece as they begged for their lives! (He broke down again)........ Viv la France! Viv la Victory!"..... he said as he walked off the dais.

A low-level official at the Information Ministry in Tokyo reads a prepared statement: The lack any request for surrender or quarter from the French, as well as the honorable conduct of Japanese solders at the fall of Saigon, is well documented. What is also well documented is the care and safety shown to all surrendering civilians and soldiers. We have, at the highest military levels, assured that French prisoners of war are being treated with the greatest respect due to their honorable conduct during the campaign. It is therefore regrettable that this so-called Lt. Col. G. Langlade, who presumably fled into neutral territory while his comrades continue to fight on in other parts of Indochina, has resorted to tarnishing his Army's reputation with such a dishonorable performance before the world media. We are sure that his honorable comrades in arms must be embarrassed by this spectacle. Therefore, out of respect for our honorable opponents in Indochina, we will not comment on this slander any further.

First phase of the Naval battle off Wakkanai. The inclusion of French CA Dupleix turned a certain Allied defeat into a victory - although all US AMCs were sunk, an even greater number of Japanese AMCs were destroyed, with more disabled:

Connfire, I have not got any idea, where all the Japanese Armed Merchant Cruisers are coming from with the game, because nowhere in the Naval history of Japan did they have access to, or use more than a 18 in total world war 2,never mind the 1920 - 30's,The game is complete fiction in this regard. Also the same can be said for the allied numbers, pure fiction.

ANOTHER THING I JUST CHECKED WITH MY VERSION OF THE GAME AND ( AMC ) IS NOT IN THE LIST OF SHIP TYPES AVAILABLE TO ME ,YET YOUR PHOTO CLEARLY DISPLAYS THEM AS AMC's, VERY CURIOUS NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE????

True, historically there weren't so many AMCs, but since this is purely hypothetical I don't mind it. Given the vast scope of the Pacific, and the limited sizes of the navies, it stands to reason both sides would slap together Auxilliary Cruisers as a quick way of being more places at once. In my first 1:1, I made the mistake of not building very many AMCs, while my opponent did. I learned my lesson, and to his credit, my current opponent hasn't made that same mistake, so we're seeing an increased number of AMCs clashes. They are limited to what they can do, but they can prove handy.

As far as the game goes, WPO is basically a mod of WITP. AMCs were added after the game's initial release, as a free download. If you don't have this download, they'll appear as CLAAs (anti-aircraft cruisers), though their stats will be the same. In the editor, AMCs occupy Type 008 - which in WITP is CLAAs - obviously something we'll never see in WPO. This AAR is using Scenerio 2, which is hard coded so it can't be changed. Make sure your game is upgraded to Version 1.205. To see the nuts and bolts of the AMCs - open the scenerio and check out Class 108 (Japanese, upgrades to Class 569) and Class 359 (Allies). Both the Japanese AMC and large AK uses Bitmap 164 while the Allied AMC and large AK uses Bitmap 345.

As a public service, for anyone who hasn't upgraded to 1.205, here's the link: http://www.matrixgames.com/products/326/downloads/War%20Plan%20Orange:%20Dreadnoughts%20in%20the%20Pacific%201922%20-%201930. All of the changes, if you are interested, are in this thread: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1200317
