Thx mate! So i have to suppose that he's sending the KB (or a part of it) to support the invasion of Java and used those decoy TFs around Midway just to puzzle me (and he actually succeded!)

Dutch LBs are useless on naval attack, I've never seen a successful naval attack by them, they do however perform quite well against ground troops, so it might be better to save them for when he lands.
The Catalinas would have been killed by AA anyway if they went for a BB, but against transports they tend to be deadly.

I see you still have ships in Batavia and Soerebaja, nothing big and expensive I hope?

Two more days. No China report yet cause i wanna wait till the end of the week to make a good and comprehensive summary of what's happening there (which isn't good...well, better, a disaster).

The KB showed up in java!!! the intel was actually right!!!!
Kido Butai death-star showed up, coming from no-where, 5 hexes south-WEST of Java...divided in two different TFs, bombing both Soarebaja and Batavia, supported by a series of strong sweep mission conducted by zeros from Palembang.
Luckly i've evacuated all my air forces from Batavia and Soarbaja. Ships from Java have been all evacuated except for a couple of damaged AK and TK.
japan landed 21 units at Kalidati (south-east of Batavia)...wow!...the last days of Java have really begun!
Thanks to that intel that spoke about CV Soryu at Timor, i've evacuated towards Colombo all my Surface TFs (Brit and Dutch) that were ready to ambush landing japs west of Java...with the Kb around it would have been a massacre

In SOPAC his AMCs keep on savaging my unesorted convoys. By now they sunk something like 15 ships...gotta solve this problem ASAP!

At Hawaii my fast reinforcements convoys are approaching PH...Hawaii should be saved now. Tomorrow the Yorktown is arriving...i badly need this CV in order to have a decent CV force!

Nothing much else to report a part from China...

OK, more hints and some of my usage of assets.

KPM Troop Class are xAKLs that can convert to xAPs. They have a small endurance of 4000 and capacity of 1250. They are in SRA, Australia, and India. They are good for moving troops around and later for invasions, but I like them for their size. You have many bases with port size 2 or smaller and you need them to be able to dock vs trying to get those big xAPs that are over 7k in size.

Dutch subs - I send them to India vs Perth and Australia. You need them there as you don't have enough British subs.

Clemson and Wickes Class DDs will be converted to APDs vs DE in 4/42 and 5/42. The Allies have very few ships that you can use in a Fast Transport TF. I understand your need for escorts, but you will get enough DDs by late 42 to be able to take over escort duty from these new APDs.

Be careful on your use of APs and AKs. Both upgrade to APAs and AKAs in 4/43 that will be your main transports when you invade. One of the reasons I use those smaller Dominion and Pacific Class to carry the load of moving troops around.

Fast supply transport (and fuel) will be your Euro L Cargo xAKs and C3 S Cargo xAKs as their speed is 17. I have one TF with them and some DDS and fast escort ships. I use them to haul fuel until I can get more AO/TKs. They can get from USA to NZ in a hurry vs those that have a speed of 12/13.

India - You will find out that you have very few patrol plane groups. Most of the Catalina Is are 6 plane groups and you have to withdraw too many of them in ealry 42. Thus, I send over the two PBYs from Luzon and add in the Wellington Ic (both for ASW and Naval Search) rather than use them as LBs.

Wow...usefull..the ship conversion is really a "game into the game" thing!
Ok, i need to re-organize everything so...chaos is reigning at the moment in my fleet. I have convoys of every ship kind and speed...

So basically: convert (can i do it now or do i have to wait?) the DDs i can to DE and APD asap and use them for Fast Transport and ASW?
Convert APs and AKs to APAs and AKAs?
Convert small AKLs to APs?
Leave only the fast AKs as they stand and use them for fast fuel transport?

1. Most DDs cannot be converted untill first half of 42 and if I understood ny59giants correctly he adviced you to convert the DDs that can be made into both APD and DE to APDs not DEs.
2. Not untill later, the upgrade is not available untill 43 I think, and it is the APs and AKs, not the xAPs and xAKs.
3. Most of these can be converted now, yes. Just to keep myself with enough troop transports I usually convert the 3900 and 5500 capacaty AKs into APs as well, but then again I always lose ALOT of transports so weigh your needs against each other.
4. Yes, form a transport TF and chose load fuel with a TF with those fast AKs. It seems to me that they are somewhat slower to load, someone can surely confirm/deny this?

Another tip if your fuel in Oz is getting low and you anticipate a need to form a surface TF to fend off enemy ships, is to load up some fuel on those low capacaty, low range AOs you get from the Dutch and then disband them in port with the fuel loaded. (If ofc you have those ships in Oz and do not use them in any other way.)

I was very tempted to convert these old 4 stack DDs into DEs as I needed escorts for my transports. You had mentioned that you were short on escorts and you may feel by 1 April 42 when you can first do these conversions to go DE, but it is better to go with conversions to APDs

My caution is not to use these ships in areas where you feel that could be attacked. You will need them in 43 when you start your counter attacks in earnest. I am leaving them at Alameda to avoid using them for now. I have enough transports that I don't need them.

The Dominion and Pacific Class xAPs (those I mentioned earlier to convert) are great for transporting your LCUs into most of your early bases. These are those in the South Pacific like Fiji area and Pago Pago area that have small ports until expanded. They are below 6000 in size and you can make smaller TF once they arrive at a base so they can dock and unload quicker. With KB able to move in a strike quickly, its best to have smaller ships that you can dock.

These 17 knot xAKs are able to load both supply and fuel (7580 cargo and 550 liquid). I use them at times just to carry fuel. You have enough xAKs for supply, but not enough TK/AOs for fuel. Thus, you must decide what xAKs you will use to transport fuel. I usually use xAKS that can also carry liquid (oil/fuel) in this case. I do the same thing around India.

I'm using the latest beta patch (1108k5) which allows an Allied player to turn off industry. You can go to Sydney and turn of your HI. It will save you 1000 fuel per day.

Thank you mates! Very usefull tips! Now i'm reorganizing my whole transport fleet. Spent hours going through every single AK / AKL and convert/direct/move them as suggested.

New year has come. And the slaughterhouse continues.
Japan seems to have stopped expanding (for now) in CENTPAC and SOPAC, while all his efforts are concentrated in Java, China and Burma.
Let's go with order:

BURMA:
The Imperial Guards Div, supported by some more units, has breached the line at Pegu, defeating my blocking forces there and now Rangoon is threatened to be isolated. At the same time a tank rgt is moving flanking the r-road north of Pegu...I guess by the end of Jan 42 Burma will be lost for good.

Java:
Japanese forces conquered Kalidjati, de facto isolating Batavia from the rest of the island. My ducth bombers, set at 100 and 1000 ft managed finally to score some hits and sunk a couple of transports...nothing that can change the course of war...but at least a good feeling.
KB divisions are raiding my transports in Indian Ocean. I fleed where i could (with my SCTFs towards Colombo), while i left the transports (slower) on their own (could not do much about that). Now one KB Div is parking west of Perth while the other one is raiding close to Cape Town.

China:
Terror and disgrace here. Japan's flanking manouvres continue. As i guessed he's not going to smash my strongpoints...he flak them, using his superior mobility, and neutralize them, cutting the way of retreat and the flow of supplies.
Situation in the screen shots...

Hawaii:
PH is now secure. My reinforcements TFs arrived and delivered supplies, fuel and many troops. The 4 main bases around PH are now guarded by an INF rgt or equivalent, by a CD marine unit, one AA unit, a base force and, for big Island, also some tanks. Building only forts. He still can have them if he wants, but he'll have to committ everything but the kicthen sink (is that correct???).

Gotta go now...few screen shots are following. Tonight i'll post more combat details

Remember, when you use Naval Attacks at 1000' you use LowN skill vs NavB skill if you were at 2000' or above.

Yes NY59Giants, but despite those "orange" bombers were very low with their low-naval skills, they managed to score several hits on non CAPPED AKs...that means to me that with low level skills it's better to go very low and risk something with flak but with some chances of hitting a deck or two...

Do you know why he had no LRCAP over his transports at Kalidjati?? He can afford the losses in transports, but he didn't have to.

I've been on both sides of those Dutch CD guns and they can be brutal if you don't use a BB TF to hit the base first and put in some CLs or larger ships to soak up the CD gun hits.

The next turn he understood he had understimated the bravery of the dutch pilots and moved in some fighters who neutralized and annihilated my ducth air force.
However i think he could't provide any LRCAP being Palembang (his closest air base) too far away and being his 2 KB divisions raiding western Oz and Indian Ocean.

I've lost some more 20/30 transports and some other support ships in the last 4 days due to these raids. Luckly the RN is safe in Colombo, while at Perth i have no important ships to lose.

Now that the curtain is going down over Java and with Manila sieged i really have to think about the future japanese movements. With KB in the west the main and most natural targets should be OZ, NZ-Fiji-New Caledonia or India.
I feel pretty safe by now in Hawaii. I've used the last week (since i knew where KB was) to reinforce as much as i could the Hawaii Islands.
Considering he's still putting a lot of efforts in China (talking about air force and unrestricted units sent there instead of Malaya or PI), i don't think he has the power, right now, till the China affair is over, to land enough forces to take the Hawaii. It would be a vvery long journey from Java to CENTPAC and it will also be a logistical nightmare (think about shipping supplies, fuel, units and stuff from Java/Sumatra to Truk first and then to the Hawaii!!!).
I really believe, also reading some jap AARs, that his best bets now should be India or Oz.

Let's analyze them.

OZ: North and West Oz are not defendable at the moment. Darwin stands almost on his own and it's too far away from my logistical centers that a difensive perimeter cannot be created here. Same for Perth even if there's a rail road connecting Perth to the Melbourne area. For what concerns Sydney-Melbourne-Cairns area...well...i haven't read yet an ARR where someone has managed to conquer them...so i have to believe that it's really really an hard task for even a pro jap player as Rader is.
NZ, Fiji and New Caledonia are ready to be taken, not been reinforced in the last month of war...cannot do much more at the moment.

India: well...this is the place of which i'm really scared about. He can land everywhere, conquer an air base, and march directly -covered by overwhelming air forces- directly to the heart of India. I have not enough troops nor a decent air army to even think about stopping him. Plus, the RN will face the fearfull decision to stand and fight against the KB - and so be killed - or to leave in hurry the area and abbandon the pride of the crown on its own.
With a landing in Madras, for example, he could, with a single move, cut the east of India and the whole Burma-China theatres from Karachi and the supply lines. From Madras then he could simply go north towards Karachi, with the KB raiding Cylon and Bombay area, thus avoiding me any chance of sending reinforce and supplies from Cape Town...would be a mess

OK, here is a list of large "free" (deployable) Japanese LCUs. I suggest you print this out and when any of them are involved in combat to write it down and the date. I don't get down to the specific base, but write Malaya, Sumatra, Luzon, Timor, Rabaul (Solomons), etc. so you can see where his main thrust will be.

I agree here. I send the 18th UK Division to Perth from Cape Town on turn one (go into the TF and reset the prep objective for the parent unit of each component to Perth). I usually sent three PBYs from Pearl/USA to Australia in the first 10 days. I use them to get out a fragment of the 6 USN and USAAF BFs in the Philippines to Australia for rebuilding later. Right now, I would use some PBYs to transport those BF components over to Port Hedland and then Geraldton to be combined at Perth. They are not even big enough or strong enough to even be a speed bump for his troops. From Darwin, I move some of the smaller infantry down towards Tennant Creek to prevent para drops on those bases and cut off retreat route into the interior. In my current practice PBEM game as Allies, i left only the static CD guns at Darwin. The rest are now safe and can be used later in the war.

You will need to look at three landing areas: Ceylon, Chittagong, and Vizagapatnam. I did not include Madras as the urban bonus plus the troops there would make this an unlikely invasion site. I would go through, if you haven't done so already, the bases in the north (map orientation) and send what you can south as long as you can maintain garrison requirements. You have and/or will receive three mobile CD units, so use them wisely.
Ceylon is a question of how much of a speed bump do you want. You cannot defend it. Dig back in the AARs to see Q-Ball's AAR against Canoerebel about how much combat power Japan can land there. You don't have enough fighters (and experienced pilots) to defend Colombo, so be careful how much and how long you keep your warships there. I would buy out (PPs) and move some back to India, but others will disagree.
Chittagong is easy to invade as you can use land based fighters to cover it and get behind any retreating units in Burma. This is where some of those northern units go along with "Viza." I focus mainly on fort building for the first few months (size 4 or 5 forts before expanding AF). One of the two Australian divisions go here.
Vizagapatnam (Viza) gets very little in the beginning, but a steady flow of units. Units with engineers are needed to build up a fort. If he lands here then he will probably land at Chittagong to encircle Calcutta. look for a BF from the north to go here and a small infantry from what you have at start.
Calcutta is the prize and I spend the beginning expending AF to size 7 to allow air units to upgrade and then over to fort building. Crank up the supply request here and some of the other major bases in the south to allow them to fill out your TO&E.

Note - you can move LCUs to Eastern USA that are not restricted and then select Cape Town as destination and in about 45 days they show up there. You don't have to use transports to get them there. Use those shorter legged APs (endurance of 9700) to pick them up (I use them here and Aden). Train up your Air Force in India so when the Hurricanes come in you can put up a fight. Going up against Oscar and Zero whose experience is over 70 with pilots below 50 is just wasteful.

Well, i didn't manage to save much from Luzon and PI in general. I think i only saved fragments of the Cebu base force and of the HQ fleet present there...
The 18th Div? You mean the 54th,55th and 56th UK bdes? There're being shipping to Akyab right now...too late i think to move to Perth

I'll try to move some units to Viza so...but considering that i have to cover every possible landing target in southern India and keep the Burma frontier open at the same time ...it's getting pretty difficult to find enough units at the moment. Cylon rapresents an interesting question mark. The terrain (wood) makes a juicy place to be defended and it's big enough to support different each-covering airfields. Thinking about stockpiling supplies for ages there and send every unit i have in India there...he probably doesn't suspect i'll go defending a place considering undefendable...so it may be a bad surprise for him. Trico and Colombo, with their CD guns, are a difficult target for his BBs and CAs and, as long as he'll be stucking and focusing there, i could always try to suprise his fleet with RN from Bombay/Karachi...he will need his KB fully supporting the invasion so he won't be free to ride towards Karachi. My air Army in India is small at the moment...but i have enough torpedo bombers and buffaloes to force him to keep the KB around. If i'm able to get to Cylon something like 1500 AV, well dig in in Colombo, with huge stockpile of supplies...it can take him forever to reduce such a fortress...and at the same time i could reinforce, with the upcoming reinforces from Cape Town and Aden, the continental India... he cannot go and land in India without suppressing fortress Cylon...he will have his flanks uncovered...mmmm...

I've already sent some 3 bomber groups and 3 fighter groups to Cape Town...i still don't know however if it's better to send them to Oz (where a decent air force is badly badly needed) or to India (where RAF, at least, already have a shadow of air power)...another challenging call!

However there's another possibility...Japan reduces China...and then brings everything but the kitchen sink to Russia!!!...i have to go back and see what we agreed in the HR about Russia...mmmm....CREEPY!!

Luckly the RN is safe in Colombo

How many fighters with decent pilots do you have to fly CAP here, 'cause Colombo is not neccessarily safe imo, early on the Allies have too few fighters to properly cover the port (atleast that is my experience) if the IJN shows up with some fleet CVs.

Atleast keep an eye out for an attack here. Those British flattops are easily taken out by two Jap CVs.

GreyJoy, what's your strategy for submarines? I know the fleet boats are pretty crummy until the torpedoes improve later on, but what about the S boats and the Dutch ones, are you having much luck with them?

I am playing both sides using scenario 2, so its not like I'm giving out info that is not know. If you haven't played WIP or AE then you may not know what units belong to what and what troops you should see showing up in early combat. If 4 to 6 divisions were missing at this point, then I would worry that some major operation was underway.

GreyJoy, what's your strategy for submarines? I know the fleet boats are pretty crummy until the torpedoes improve later on, but what about the S boats and the Dutch ones, are you having much luck with them?

Gotta say that i'm proceeding a bit like a blind man...i'm using my subs with little order and less results...in CENTPAC mainly around PH as a recon-defensive line (untill i knew KB was in Java) while in SRA i haven't been very lucky so far with my subs...plan now to divide them in 2 groups and send some to India and some to Sydney...

Never played the Japanese so I remain a bit unfamiliar with what forces they can field here and there. It's handy to have it all in one place. Cheers.

The S-boats and the Dutch ones are worth their weight in the early war - the Dutch ones in particular. I've often had good luck with them in the DEI. Fleet boats...not so much..

What if he manages to conquer the whole China...what about the VPs he can gain with it? May he get autovictory with only historical perimeter and China or will he need another major objective?
