December 28, 1941 - Jan 7, 1942

Singkawang – I chose to invade Singkawang instead of Kuching because it’s closer to Singapore, less defended, and has a bigger airfield. I brought the big dogs this time in the form of the 21st Mixed Bde from Hanoi and its pack and they took it on the first attempt.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Singkawang (56,88)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 6830 troops, 54 guns, 11 vehicles, Assault Value = 283

Defending force 1534 troops, 11 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 58

Japanese adjusted assault: 161

Allied adjusted defense: 3

Japanese assault odds: 53 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Singkawang !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately for my Navy, the Dutch unleashed the most devastating weapon on the planet: the tri-motor torpedo bomber Do-24K-2! It should have a better name than that, “Destroyer of Worlds” or something like it. This time I brought air cover with the mini-KB. Didn’t matter. Similar to Midway, wave after wave of B-25s wore out my zero cap; then THEY came:

A BB, CA, LSD, and an AP went down to a wing of 18 bombers. They didn’t even need an escort! Who needs the KB when you have the mighty Do-24K-2!

I also finally took Hong Kong and Miri, but was too depressed to take any satisfaction from it.

I've upgraded to Patch 6 Build k8. Trying to get a handle on stockpiling material and devices. On the base display for example there is a column now for stockpiling and a Y/N selection next to Supplies, Fuel, Oil, and Resources. As a test, I selected Y on both bases in Hainan for Supplies. I then created a cargo TF in Samah and set it to load supplies. I ran three 2 day turns and the TF did not load any supplies even though there was over 30,000 units of supply at Samah. This would be useful to keep supplies or fuel from being drawn off to the large ports.

You can add the Chinese to the list. The Chinese Army in this scenario is a match for the Japanese. I'm re-evaluating my China strategy here.

Air war – as you would expect, the Allies have more of everything compared to GC1. Saigon and Cam Rahn Bay get regular visits from B-17s. One of which managed to hit the Ryujo leaving it in the yards for two weeks. Nates and Oscars are almost useless against the 4Es and there are not enough zeroes to go around. The Allies Do-24k-2 tri-motor torpedo bomber has been a game changer in this scenario. More durable with more guns than a Betty, their ’crack’ crews control the seas in the DEI. I can only hope there are not many of them left. I’ve been more successful clearing out the P-40s in the PI with 150 reported destroyed. There seems to be an endless supply of B-25s coming out of the DEI.

Malaya – this is my main focus of the war until I can take Singapore. I’ve taken it slow and methodical with five divisions and their friends in the party. The 38th is ready to join them from Hong Kong if needed. I’ve advanced to Taiping and Kota Bharu. It looks like the Scotsman has executed an extreme Sir Robin. I’m readying airborne assaults against Temuloh and Kuala Lumpur as recon shows them vacant. Recon now shows just two units in Singapore. I would have landed in Mersing, but the Do-24k-2 makes that problematic. In hindsight, I should have brought the KB back to the DEI. In any case I hope my recon is correct because it also shows Moulmein with 60,120 troops, 486 guns, and 405 AFV. If these aren’t a lot of the troops from Singer, then I’m even worse off than I think.

North Borneo – I’ve taken Brunei, Miri, Singkawang, and Sambas. I’m moving to Kuching and Pontianak by land. Aviation support is on the way to Singkawang as I intend to turn that into a major air base for the DEI operations. It looks like I’m too late to cut off Singapore.

PI – the Scotsman is falling back on Clark and it looks like he’ll make his stand here.

China – The Chinese army is a match for the Japanese and I’m struggling to hold my own. Both sides are taking a lot of casualties in slug fest battles and I can’t afford them. I’m looking for good spots to dig in here.

Pacific – I’m pulling the 8th Division out of Manchuria the start the offensive here at Rabaul. I’m reluctant to grab too many more units from the Far East because I expect the T-34s to come over the border any turn now. I kept the KB at Truk waiting for those Nimitz class carriers to come over the horizon.

Subs – the Japanese AI has hit a lot of AKs. Many with their guns since the Allies don’t sail with escorts.

I noticed on Tracker that the Scotsman must be feeding his engineers Red Bull because the Allies are increasing airfields and ports a lot faster than the Japanese.

Regarding the Russkies, is there a real possibility of them attacking now? That would make for an even greater challenge than uber-Dorniers.

Cheers,

I don't know if Soviet activation can be altered in the editor or is hard coded. I also wondered if AI scripts could use Soviet forces regardless of activation. It would certainly catch JFBs by surprise.

Andy,

You can start the scenario with the Soviets activated via the editor, correct?  You just can't change the activation requirements of 8000 min AV, correct?

I think you're right PaxMondo. There is a Yes/No option on the scenario screen in the editor to activate Soviets. You could edit the scenario to activate and call it Ironman on Steroids!

I like the unknown factor in this scenario. Keeps the game fresh.

Air War – Allies have air superiority over Southern Malaya, DEI, Burma, and China. Japanese have superiority over Luzon, Northern Malaya, and wherever the KB goes. With PDU off I have to make do with large numbers of Nates against P-40s and level bombers. The Allies get more level bombers in this scenario and all my bases get bombed routinely except the Home Islands and Samah. I’ve tried to make the most of my zeroes by setting up ambushes, but the Scotsman usually avoids them. My best interceptor has been the Ki-44 Tojo with six 2E kills among the nine precious few I have. Recon in Southern Malaya puts Allied air strength at 97 fighters, 64 bombers, and 134 auxiliary. A series of sweeps by Oscars ran into P-40s and Hurricanes who achieved a 4 to 1 kill ratio against the Oscars. I’m moving two groups of Zeroes to Kuala Lumpur which will be my main base of operations against Singapore and Johore Bahru. Zeroes will sweep and the bombers will follow like the PI. Allied air losses reported to date are 606 which include 236 fighters (126 P-40s), 179 level bombers (39 B-17s), and 34 torpedo bombers (24 Dorniers). The Japanese have lost 505 of which 204 were fighters (89 Nates, 63 Zeroes, and 45 Oscars), and 226 level bombers.

Naval war – this has been the greatest success thus far for the Japanese, but most of it occurred on the first day of the war with the PH and force Z attacks. The Scotsman has lost 115 ships to my 38. Allied capital ship losses are 18 to the Japanese 2. Fifteen Allied destroyers are reported sunk compared to none for the Japanese. The Allies have lost 52 transports and cargo vessels to 27 for the Japanese: a 2 to 1 ratio. The Allies continue to serve up unescorted cargo ships to my subs who have sunk many with their surface guns. They may be short of escorts.

Malaya – the Scotsman has set up a speed bump at Malacca, some more substantial forces at Johore Bahru, and the bulk of his troops in Singapore. Airborne troops took Kuala Lumpur and Temuloh which were abandoned by the Scotsman. Kuantan and Mersing are also empty, but no rail reaches these bases and Allied air strength is too strong to transport troops in by sea (beware the Dorniers!). The Imperial Guards and a couple of regiments are marching to take Malacca and then I’ll rail the rest of the troops there. Everybody walks to Johore Bahru.

Burma – recon shows substantial forces at Moulmein (14 units-59,660 troops-528 guns-405 AFV). I’ll need more than the 15th Army (learned that lesson in China). The 15th Army is enjoying Mandalay beer in Rahaeng until troops are done with Singapore and DEI.

North Borneo – my attempt to bring aviation support to Singkawang was a fiasco as the Dorniers sunk all the transports before anyone could unload. I was lucky to get the support vessels outa Dodge without any hits. The mini KB air cover did manage to down a few Dorniers who were unescorted. As a consolation prize, Kates sunk a couple of cargo ships. It was a strategic defeat as I counted on Singkawang to control the approaches to Singer and Eastern Sumatra. I’m going to wait until the KB is done in the Solomons and use it to support the DEI offensive.

PI – the 14th Army took San Fernando and is ready to assault Lingayen. Recon shows Allied strength similar to GC1 which concerns me. The Scotsman has to have a sneaky surprise here somewhere!

Pacific- the 4th Brigade of the 8th Division took Rabaul on the second try. Kavieng was also taken as it was undefended. The South Seas force heads for Shortlands. No sign of USN CVs. Air support by the KB. Another spot that is too quiet.

China- makes me wish I picked one of the quiet China scenarios. Stillwell obviously got to China early in this scenario and convinced Chiang Kai-shek to allow him to train and equip the Chinese Army. I’m running into large forces with aggressive leaders all over the country. I should have gone on the defensive from the start and built forts in good defensive terrain. I have four divisions cut off at Tsiaotso across from Loyang after the Scotsman took Kaifeng. I have five other divisions in adjoining hexes, but I am still outnumbered. I never dreamed the
Chinese would be this strong. The Chinese offensive in the South appears to have stalled in Amoy where the Scotsman has concentrated his forces. My incessant bombing is probably keeping him too disrupted to mount a successful attack. In central China the Scotsman is stalled at Kiukiang where I’m sitting in good defensive terrain behind level 3 forts.

FOW-Both the Prince of Wales and the Repulse were falsely reported sunk as well as the CL Raleigh. The BB Pennsylvania was still reported sunk at PH when one of my subs put two torps into it off the West Coast. It’s now reported sunk with a new location.

Production-I increased production of the Oscar, Zero, and Sally along with the Ha-32 and Ha-33 engines to make up for losses. The Ha-35 had been increased at the start.

Malaya-took Malacca and moving to Johore Bahru. I built Kuala Lumpur into a size 6 AF and brought in the 23rd Air Flotilla HQ. I transferred 72 Zeroes and 60 Oscars and set them to 50% CAP at varying altitudes expecting to catch the Allied airstrikes against Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. The results were a little disappointing. I destroyed 9 level bombers and 6 fighters at a cost of two fighters. I was hoping for a more decisive outcome. I start sweeping Singapore next turn.

PI-took Lingayen and waiting for reinforcements before moving on Clark. Keeping busy bombing Clark with the JAAF.

China-the Scotsman is bombarding my troops at Anyang, Kiukiang, and Amoy. He is not strong enough to take my positions and is sitting in place using his artillery to very little effect. I’ve got 4 divisions pinned down in Kaoping that are out of supply. They cannot break out and I can’t break through. I over-extended myself before I realized how powerful the Chinese are in Ironman.

Pacific- the South Seas force took Shortlands without opposition. I brought the KB in to raid PM and finally got some payback when I found a landing taking place in Milne Bay. The results would probably have been better without the rain and thunderstorms, but I’ll take it. With the large Non-combat Allied losses, I may have sunk an HQ.

Pacific-the KB came back for round 2 against the landing at Milne Bay. I observed 30 cargo, 15 transports, and 18 escorts so this is a substantial effort. The Scotsman is taking a beating here. I wonder what he’s up to?

China-I consolidated troops at Kaoping who were cut off from supply. They were down to half the required supply. I was desperate so I shock attacked the lone Chinese unit and was able to take Kaoping and restore the supply line. I’m moving these troops to Anyang. I think a decent human player would have trapped and annihilated these troops.

Malaya-the Zero sweeps in Singapore were a disaster: 56 Zeroes from two veteran groups from the PI swept at 30,000 ft and suffered 18 A2A/OPS losses to kill one Buffalo. The P40-E’s appear to be flown by elite pilots. I’m having better success with my CAP defending their level bomber attacks.

Air War-intensive air combat is taking place over Southern Malaya. Singapore is a death trap for Japanese planes as both sweeps and level bombing missions result in few planes returning to base. The P-40s based in Singapore are particularly effective. CAP missions over Kuala Lumpur and Malacca are more successful as I generally achieve 1-to-1 kills against Allied fighters and manage to knock down a few bombers. Reported fighter losses are 355 for Allies and 350 for Japan. Total aircraft losses reported are Allies 1,040 and Japanese 750. The Allies have a lot of long ranged B-17 and Hudson bombers in Ironman. With PDU off I only have Nates defending my bases and they are not very effective.

Naval war-Japanese subs sank a reported 61 vessels to date compared to 20 by the Allies. I still see a lot of unescorted Allied cargo ships. The Mark 14 is responsible for 11 Japanese ships sunk. I don’t think I have seen a hit with no explosion for the Mark 14 yet. So far there have been 3 subs sunk by other subs. With the FOW clearing up, I’m down to 11 Allied capital ships sunk vs 2 Japanese. The Allies have had 78 AKs and 23 APs reported sunk compared to 19 AKs and 7 APs for the Japanese. I don’t know if this is enough of a differential to have a strategic impact in this scenario. The KB accounted for 28 Allied ships sunk at Milne Bay. This must have been a major operation thwarted.

Pacific- I’m building up Rabaul and Shortlands and bringing in Zeroes and Bettys. Other than a lot of sub activity, not much happening at the moment.

China- I’ve extricated almost all of my trapped divisions from Kaoping into Anyang. The front here has become stagnant with no new initiatives from the Chinese.

PI and Burma-nothing happening here also as I don’t have the muscle to advance and the Scotsman is sitting still.

DEI-I’ve moved the KB back from the Pacific and expect to resume operations here at Manado and North Borneo. The Mini KB is now up to 4 CVs and I’ve resized the air components. I’m counting on the CVs to provide air cover here because all my worthwhile land based air is tied up in Malaya.

Malaya- I’ve attacked twice in Johore Bahru and only achieved 1 to 1 despite bringing 8 divisions and supporting troops and HQ. My troops are prepped for Singapore and that’s not helping here. I have knocked the forts down to level 2.

For inspiration I had a Wheaties breakfast with 2010 Ironman champion Chris McCormack on the box. We'll see if it improves my dismal performance.
