this is my rags to riches story, a story about how a galactic conquest game fell flat on its face right out the door. its going to have a bit of a background update on my situation at the moment

as you can see i lowered research rates quite low, i wanted to make techs feel important.

agression is normal because i wanted to be able to get a few allies, make things interesting.
lots of stars, because you can never have too big of a galaxy.

i made them mostly habitable because i wanted to have a large end game, i am going to be agressive, but not overly so. so i wanted there to be room for other empires to grow and flourish.

i chose old because i wanted the ai to get some good independants, and im happy to say this worked out well, a few of my neibors got some quite good treasures

i made the tech level just above starting, because i wanted ships to have a wide variety of things to use, without the ai having to waste time researching every little thing.

i think that young is 2-5 worlds, but i could be wrong, whatever the case, i started with two worlds, one of them only had about 800 million.

i thought about putting corruption at low, but i decided against it.

home system normal, i want them to matter, but i dont want them to matter above all else.

i chose military dictatorship because it puts me in an odd situation, my income takes a hit due to the approval loss, but i gain some important bonuses for a warring faction, a high priority will be to find a new government

chose edge because it usually puts me in hilarious places in varied clusters (and it did this time too)

i dont like stumbling upon another of my race, and i certaintly dont like seeing it 5 times, so i never random races. i gave them equal footings tho.

no victory condidtions, but the world is still story rich. i have tried using victory conditions before, but they just dont seem very interesting.

this picture illustrates my early game problems and why my economy is currently in the hole (and has been for almost the whole game)

as you can see, polymer was extremely far from my home world, and once the home world stockpile dried up, i had to wait forever to start building again. i didn't take any screens, but i at one point had dozens of ships waiting to be built but could not be.

i have captured a few independents, but they are not giving as much tax income as i would like.

my current, valiant fleet, that defends all of the empires interests and protects against her enemies. the rest of the ships running around are automated and constructed with approval.

i will let this picture mostly speak for itself, but its not good, i try not to mess too much with base designs if i can help it, but when a small space port costs 18 THOUSAND to build because steel, polymer and gold are at 2.5 each, i might have to do something about it.

i managed to get two alliances, one of them with the distant frog people, and the other being the great and powerful ketaros. it cost me some quite uneven deals to get them to like me enough for this, but i desperately needed the trade income to stay afloat, my economy was being annihilated by such extreme costs that even my explorers cost 3500 to build

here are some more screens to help illustrate these issues.

laugh all you want, but your eyes don't deceive, that's some expensive steel.

fortunately, i got lucky, and found two sources of rare resource, and currently i am going to try to turn my economy around with them, before its too late!

and that's basically where this AAR begins

my first current objective is to try to take the independent colony of ackdarians that is near my super luxury's, that will give me a good jump into those clusters for colonization and defense, and hopefully stir my economy some more.

a ship and a colony? sounds good :D

unfortunately the ship exploded!, but the fleet sustained no damage other than a few panicked spider people

a battle ensues, the dhayut army is led by a small group of ackdarian defectors from another, nearby world.

they achieved victory over the world with no troops destroyed! although, in typical dhayut style, the defectors were the ones that did the dangerous stuff on the ground.

i convinced the shandar to go hostile against the zenox in exchange for some technology.

they have been neighbors since the start of the game, and i figured it would be nice to unravel the peace in that area until i can fight my way out of the negatives.

it seemed to have worked nicely, he has bigger problems now that his back yard is under siege

Nice with more AARS. It would be more readable with smaller screenshots, though. Try to cut and shrink to fit standard forum page is my advice.

Btw, my last game was also Spiders starting Military Dictatorship. During the first war I suddenly found myself in a democracy (spy operation)

croppping the images causes the text to become too hard to read, so i will leave the images large, however, you can hold down CTRL and use your mouse wheel to change the size of the web page, that might help you to be able to read it better.

the zenox are fighting a war on two fronts now, the war between them and my distant ally is starting to heat up, i was not called to assist because this was a war that started before i joined them

a warning to stop attacks they say....

i predict big things for these worlds in the future, their development is extremely high, and the worlds are at the heart of a massive trade network

im not shure, but it appears that the shandar captured the boskarian homeworld!

of all the races right now, i have the weakest economy

Yes, this is one of several things that can spoil the fun. If you can continue it, I'd say you should ignore the way of the ancients (not opt for it as a government) and continue in the style of rags to riches.

Way of the Ancient/Way of the Darkness finds should be balanced a bit. In EVERY game I've played recently, I'm the one who finds WotA first.
AI empires exploration (and exploration AI in general) should be buffed greatly if you ask me.

Indeed, many things should be buffed and balanced but this one at least we can control somewhat by choosing the moment when we migrate to WotA.

i decided to go ahead and continue with the aar, couldn't hurt anything i suppose.

i made a few more allies, currently most of my side of the galaxy is on friendly terms. i have excluded a few factions from the alliance and my allies are squeezing them .

pretty desperate considering there was a time the zenox considered me their most hated enemy

my economy going completely out of control.

im experiencing an unusual bug, where whenever my advisers recommend a batch of ships, i click the buttom, but no ships are qued to be built. so i have had to guess the needs based on the amount of money on the request button

You should really scale the pictures to max 1038 pixels wide. You can do it with the Gimp easily. Under control scroll mouse wheel the text is too small.

Time to squash some pirates with your dubious reputation.

that bug you hit sounds familiar, I think it was reported before but I'll have to dig a bit to find the related thread. I think Elliot mentioned a condition that changes and leads to this result...enough speculation, if I find the thread I'll post the link here.

i cant resize them, otherwise this happens. not shure about others, but that is pretty tough to read : /

i redesigned my ships, its a standard design i am fond of, all long range torpedoes on every ship, base, and port that i feel needs weapons. i don't use any lasers of any kind.

two distant nations have started a bloody war. unfortunately, the securian do not have the weapons or tactics to be able to threaten this nation.

i made a second capital, it really helped my income, this world had 58% corruption before the change.

other than this things have been pretty quiet, i am just quietly teching up, buying/selling technologys.
