How important is bombers' defensive weaponry in fending off fighters , especially in the case of unarmored 'lighters' such G4M Betty series???

Very important...usually best seen when comparing the performance of the B-17D to the B-17E and later marks...the additional 2 rear machineguns on the E make a world of difference.
