Turn 82. January 7 1943. Blizzard.

The Soviets launch desperate assaults with typical callous disregard for human lives to relieve their entrapped comrades, but to no avail. The encirclements hold.

Yep!

Although "Tarhunnas" made fantastic achievements in 1941 and 1942 there are still 4.6 million of Soviet soldiers and that number will only grow!

BTW, I don't think that Soviets will manage to get to Berlin by 1945 but combat in 1943 and especially in 1944 and 1945 will be very very hard...

Agreed. I'll be amazed if the Soviets get anywhere near Berlin by 45 in this one. Well played though and kudos to gids for sticking with it.

Turn 84. January 21 1943. Blizzard.

The advance slows down, mainly through supply problems and need to reorganise (units have been jumbled during the advance). The Soviets are withdrawing northwards, and it is now mainly a question of herding the Soviets north.

Edit: Typo.

Partisan activity should begin to pick up considerably around this point. I would keep a close eye on any units relying on a single, extended rail line.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, partisans are starting to become a pain in the rear (pun intended, hehe).

Turn 85. Januray 28 1943. Blizzard.

The advance is generally running out of steam. I am thinking about withdrawing roughly to Tambov, as my lines are becoming longer. However, I hope to stare the Soviets down and frighten them to withdraw further from their bulges...

I will not be able to take Saratov now, not easily anyway, the Soviets have brought up plenty of reinforcements there, so I think it is better to abandon the attempt.

If the Soviets won't back down next turn, I'll start a withdrawal.

The situation at the Crimea. The Soviet advance has stalled. I had to send some fresh infantry there though, as I couldn't very well let them run rampant. It absorbed about a corps worth of fresh infantry.

Too bad you don't have some more troops in the area for a trap here. Let him come out the western side while you get through the eastern side and cut the other neck off.

I don't know that I would be risking a lot of high quality troops here as the Russian, knowing they could get cut off rather easily, but a spoiling attack here by him is a good attempt to make you stop/slow down what you are doing in other places.

I think most of the troops have been in the Criema for a long time, they went over to the attack when I weakened my guard force.

Turn 82. February 4 1943. Blizzard.

The Soviets are creating trouble in two areas, north of the Crimea and west of Stalingrad. Amazing, no matter how many you kill, they always come back!

A not overly successful conterattack west of Stalingrad... One would have expected a better casualty ratio from that.

North of Tambov, a slow withdrawal. The new planned line is marked in dark red. The yellow line would be an even better line for shortening the front, but the Red Army seems uncooperative for the moment, so we will save that for the spring offensive...

A sample of the front in the north. The German line is wafer-thin, and not many reserves. It is imperative to shorten the front to release some reserves.

At the Crimean front, the Soviets are continuing to stir up trouble. They have made a breakthrough to te east with a (luckily) weak tank corps. The arrival of mud will hopefully dampen their ardor. Map befor Axis moves.

Turn 88. Nothing dramatic happening. The withdrawal is complete. 2d Panzer Army is completely withdrawn from the front for rest and refit, and will be the strategic reserve. 4th panzer army couldn't help themselves and have surrounded a couple of Soviet corps south of Penza.

Turn 89. February 25 1943. Blizzard.

The Soviets are pressing hard from the Crimea. XXX corps have been cut off at the eastern isthmus, but happily they are holding the port of Genichesk, so they are not isolated. Elements of II SS Panzer Corps are arriving to redress the situation.

Production turn 89, filtered to Germany. It is interesting to note that the Germans have somehow captured one Finnish AA gun! I suspect there is some stealing of equipment going on between neighbouring units on the same side...

Losses turn 98. Closing up on 10 million for the Soviets. Losses this turn are modest, but the ratio is solidly in my favour. It should be noted though that 21.000 men is small fry compared to the 70.000 or so attrition losses that the Soviets seem to take every turn (hard to tell from the loss screen, sometimes the Soviet attrition losses seem to be included, sometimes not).

Turn 90. March 4 1943.

The OKH has decided to keep Penza as a springboard for a spring offenive. This can be directed either against the soft underbelly of Gorkij, or against Saratov. This has resulted in the interesting box-shaped protrusion formed by army groups A and B.
