In theory, one should pull units out of the line to take replacements, and one should group experienced units together instead of giving them green replacements. In practice this is a lot of micromanagement, and what I do in practice is give replacements only to units that are not fighting and that are near rail lines so that I can move them to the railway to take replacements. I only group units together occasionally when one unit is almost destroyed, in which case I stack it with another unit and transfer all its elements. The reason for the latter is that a unit that needs replacements is not usually located near the unit that could profit from its experience. If there is no unit that is conveniently located to take replacements, I simply create a new unit instead of giving replacements. In my AAR "Random take 2", at one point I was losing over 75 infantry per turn, so I needed to bring in a lot of new infantry each turn, most of which were new units that took 2 or 3 moves before they went into combat, giving them time to get some experience and readiness. Besides my way of putting green replacements into veteran units is the way it was done in WW2, at least by the Germans. In fact I think the game would be better if it were more effective to combine green units with veterans as in real life, but I can live with the present system.
