Allied June 10-11 update:

Allied carriers return to Eniwetok. Should make port tomorrow.

All Guam invasion TFs are at Eniwetok and ready to disembark. Rota's invasion TF arrives Eniwetok tomorrow. These will go in 1-2, Rota first just in case there's a major IJN response to the invasion TF.

A raft of Allied ASW TFs spread out from Eniwetok to canvas the route of the carrier's return. Several IJN subs are hammered by shipborne ASW during the 10-11th. Several more are claimed 'hit' by carrier aircraft on June 10-11th. An RO boat is hammered below the surface and confirmed sunk.

Minesweeping TFs arrive at Guam and clear some 25 mines. They also kill two minisubs and damage another.

Several TFs are seen to depart Iwo with a WSW heading. SigInt informs that one of these TFs contains a specific PB boat with a specific destination hex (at sea). A USN fleet boat is sent to the destination hex to sniff around some more. Not sure if the other is the KB and company, but this will be investigated. The ASW / Minesweeping TF at Guam should be OK for another day. Another two minesweeping TFs are incoming with some 'expendable' AM class ships.

IJN Update June 14, 1944:

During the night, the RO-47 puts a tin fish into the side of the BB Pennsylvania. It explodes nicely. That's the third capital ship my forces have put a nick on.

In the morning, Eniwetok's detection level is 10/10. Now there's 99 fighters on the base. Things that make you go hmmm...

In for a penny, in for a pound. I order the CA-heavy SCTF to sweep into the harbor at full speed, and retreat to Truk....

...then I check on the CVTFs. Damn. Not sure what happened, but one of the three CVTFs has a DL of 10/10. I'm spotted. There's nothing in the replay or the OPS report that says that, perhaps some errant radio call has benefitted the Allies' maddening SigInt. Harumph.

This changes everything. I'm not going to order my tender airwings into battle against 99 fully alerted USMC Corsairs. Not prudent.

I order the carriers to rendevous with their replenishment AO SW of Truk. They'll return (roundabout) to Babeldoap. Disappointing.

Probably you are not going to get a lot of comments since folks are also reading Mandrake's account on this.

That's my story, anyway.

I am enjoying both of your AAR's, however.

IJN June 15 update:

The CVTFs fall back from the abortive Eniwetok raid. During the night, USS Harder tries to torpedo CA Mogami, but misses. A good time was had by all. RO-47-the hero of the BB Pennsylvania torpedoing last night finds herself being depth charged to death by a mass of ships heading out of Eniwetok. Several ASW-heavy ships pummel her to death.

During the night, Eniwetok was completely emptied, save for 6 ships. Backing off of the strike was definitely the right thing to do, as my attack wings would have been buzzsawed. Still, it must be a hassle to pick up all one's laden AEs, TKs and AOs and flee in mortal terror. It would have made my heart sing to smell the fear on the docks and piers whilest the ships got underway. Either it would have been fear or sea lions I smelled on the piers. Anyone who's been to Pier 39 in SF recently knows where I'm coming from on that. Dang....

That's about it. A slow news day for the rest of the Empire.

Allied June 13 update:

The fleet consolidates at Eniwetok. CV Bunker Hill is disbanded into port to repair some of the floatation damage. Several new support ships (including 4xAR) have arrived from Pearl to help with some of the nicks and scratches.

SS Cod manages to finish repairing some of the DC damage done to it a couple weeks back. The mining expedition to Babeldoap and Pelileu has been completed now and the 7 submarines so tasked have been rearmed for sub patrol at Eniwetok. They've been given patrol areas to the NW of the Marianas, to further restrict secret travels of the IJN combined fleet.

In a typical feat of Allied logistical surfeit, all CVTFs and SCTFs have been refueled and rearmed in one phase. Amazing logistical turnaround. I've also ordered some DD-heavy ASW TFs back to Eniwetok. These destroyers will be divided amongst numerous TFs for additional submarine protection / cover.

Hey flower child: You're fired!: Quite a bit of the (yet unfinished) turn was spent replacing existing captains / admirals, particularly on capital ships. I'd encourage all prospective players of this scenario to look at the captains of their ships closely and gauge their ratings against the intended use of the ship.

For example, a search of CLs in one of my two SCTFs revealed some captains with Inspiration in the mid to low 30s. Eesh. Ain't no inspiration goin' on there. Hit the deck, swabbie! "Ching" Lee is in charge now, see? Kill or be killed, see? "Kill more Japs" and all that-see?

USAAF reinforcements: A group of AKAs unload supply at Eniwetok and return to Pearl. These combat supply ships will begin bringing the Tinian assault forces towards Eniwetok. Elsewhere, 2xAKs load up Army Air Force planes at Johnston Island. Two large P-47 groups will be added to the equation around the Marianas. I'll send more available shipping to strip out all the fighter and DB groups from Johnston Atoll.

Movin' on out: Last turn I ordered several AM (Minesweeper) TFs, ASW TFs and an emergency refueling TF out of Eniwetok due North. They will hold position there (out of torpedo range from the Marianas) and await the balance of the fleet before moving further West.

I'll supply the massive OOB for the Guam and Rota invasions as an addendum this evening. D-day should be in about 7 days. Oh yes, dear reader: there will be blood.

IJN June 16 update:

It's not torpedo damage, it's 'speed holes': During the night two of my three CVTFs elect to refuel their destroyers. Great. Now they linger in sub-choked waters. Zuikaku is spotted during the night by an Allied SS and takes two torpedoes. She's damaged, but not as bad as I expect. 22 sys, 34 float. Definitely out of the fight, but if she makes Babeldoap, she'll likely survive. Bad news is that I can't yet unload her air groups due to the combination of damage exceeding 50. bummer. I'll have to offload them after disbanding her in port.

Otherwise, I spend the turn upgrading my air groups and working on pilot training. I should be able to put on a decent show when the Allied (dogs) cavalry comes back for Saipan.

Nefarious plan, Mk. 2, Mod. 0: The Allies have nearly 400 aircraft on Pagan. Ridiculous overstacking. I'll bombard it with heavy surface units before the main Saipan assault shows up again. I'll use the carrier aircraft and reinforced Saipan / Guam air contingents for LRCAP.

IJN June 17 update:

Returning home: The CVTFs resume their trip to Babeldoap. Due to the submarine scourge, they swing by (waypoints) very far west on the map before clipping North. The CA TF will arrive Babeldoap tomorrow. A plucky SC attacks two Allied subs sitting just outside Babeldoap, doing modest damage to one. Atta boys.

Well, scratch that brilliant bombardment idea: On the 17th, one hex East of Pagan, the entire carrier force of the Allies shows up. Mouse overview shows more than a dozen carriers of all types: CVE TFs, CVLs, fleet CVs, the whole kit and kaboodle. The risk of something going awry with the bombardment is too great for now.

Three minisubs sent from Saipan to Pagan are dispatched by ASW TFs.

He's sticking the carriers out front to attrit my combatants. His laden landing craft have clearly not arrived on the scene yet and he's hoping to bang up my airfields (Saipan attacked today) and maybe take a shot at some surface warships before the soft underbelly of his APAs is exposed.

Air situation: Over the last few days, 6 more airgroups have arrived. Banzai! They're all at <20% nominal strength. Anti-banzai! I spend some time combining like airframes, disbanding superfluous airgroups and making sure that my best pilots are the ones most likely to fly these rare airframes.

My air situation is shaping up a bit. I'll give an estimate of available air forces to repel the heathen tomorrow.

Allied June 16 update:

Heart attacks, here we come: So I'm checking my email from work. I'm expecting action against the Imperial fleet sooner, rather than later. I see that I have a turn awaiting me with the following message from Cap'n Mandrake: Hey! look what the cat brought in. Did you call for the truce? Here's how I interpreted that:

1. My carrier TF was engaged by the Imperial Navy Kido Butai.
2. I called for a truce unilaterally (standing down all my planes for some hare-brained reason).
3. My carriers were butchered.

I spent much of the commute home going over and over in my head my settings for the carrier TF. Did I set the right CAP? Were the ranges right? Did I have these guys on training and forget to switch 'em over? Is this match effectively over? My stomach lining is being digested by excess HCL production.

I get home, give Mrs. Chickenboy a kiss and quickly hug the boy (I had the girl in the car with me) on my way to DL the turn. I run the replay looking for the death blow that a sick feeling in my stomach tells me is coming....now. No...now. No....this must be it....NOW.

But nothing happens. Well, minor skirmishes between ASW and Allied subs, but that's about it. Puzzling what he was referring to, but it sure had me going.

The situation:
(see map attached)

He's pulled almost all aircraft from the Marianas. I bet he's expecting another CVTF smashing of his airfields instead of the main event. Vacant IJNAF is good for me.

CVTF with lead ASW TF will move to their NW, ending up due West of Guam. Hopefully this will position the CVs to be in a position to block any surface interdiction of the Guam / Rota ops.

Main bodies of Rota and Guam troops and support will move West to hex 112, 96 (5 hexes west of their current position). From here, they'll be about 6 hexes out of Guam, 5 from Rota. Small AM and ASW units go in to the two objectives tomorrow to begin minesweeping and ASW duties, respectively.

I'm glad I am not the only one that spends 95% of my commute home thinking about things like this.... I, too, am wondering what his comment means.

IJN June 18th update:

I lied: No air OOB will be forthcoming today. Maybe tomorrow.

Events: More carrier-based Saipan raids bring the airbase (but not runway) damage to 22. He loses 11 planes to OPS losses, mostly Avengers-likely helped along by some friendly neighborhood flak damage.

The CVTFs continue back towards Babeldoap. I have detached DDs from the CA and BB TFs now at port in Babeldoap and formed ASW TFs with them. The are ordered towards the Zuikaku Task Force and will try to cleanse the waters prior to her arrival. The other two CVTFs are 2 and 3 hexes distant from Babeldoap, due to arrive tomorrow.

Near Pelileu, E Tsuga gives SS Piperfish a thorough beating-8 DC hits, including two penetrating ones. Listed as heavily damaged, Piperfish is either a goner or at least out of the fight for the duration.

On the ships sunk list, DD Sigourney shows up as sunk. She was lost off of Lahaina due to 'collision'. Tee hee. Nothing quite envigorates Japanese morale as when the Allies sink their own ships. One can only hope that the other ship involved in the collision was a heavy combatant or, better yet, an Essex-class aircraft carrier.

Commander roulette: With the expected invasion imminent, I review all land units on Saipan, Guam and Tinian, replacing a large number of the commanders. I'm looking for maximum LAND and AGGRESSION on leaders for my infantry units. Good leader INSPIRATION skills are a bonus. There are many good choices in the ranks.

I also replace the commander on the naval fortress unit at Saipan. His NAVAL skills are attrocious. I figure that the main role of this unit will be shooting at enemy ships, preferably those troop-laden ones disembarking. High NAVAL skills make the most sense here for the anti-ship gunnery that will be their raison d'etre. But I'm not sure...thoughts?

IJN June 19th update:

More Marianas ship traffic: The Allies move south towards Saipan with their carrier support. A couple TFs move into Saipan waters to engage some barges that were there. Q: How many Allied Fletcher class DDs does it take to shoot up some barges? A: apparently about 10. Hopefully they'll stick around in the hex another turn so's they can get mined or shot up by naval coastal guns.

Thank goodness for the Mk. 14 (part VI): Zuikaku is hit again with a single Mk. 14 shot just before she makes port at Babeldoab. She'll survive, but is at 65 float and 30 System damage. I cannot get her airgroups off, even in port. Drat. A waste of some good assets.

In any case, that's three torpedoes that she's taken and survived. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, vaunted Allied damage control! Had these been real torpedoes, she would have been doomed. Since they were the Mk.14s, the comparatively small warhead (along with divine providence, I'm sure) saved her.

Air ambush tomorrow: Allied carrier airgroups continue to beat on Saipan.

Since is the fourth such day of strikes, I've moved a large contingent of fighters into Guam for a LRCAP ambush tomorrow. Here's hoping fatigue for Allied pilots lets me get some licks in. Anything I can do to deplete or fatigue Allied CV pilots before "THE" battle is a good thing. If I can snag a few stray unescorted DBs or TBs, that would be a wondrous victory for the Emperor.

Allies June 17th update:

(See screenshot below)

In position for assault tomorrow: Assault units for the Guam and Rota invasions go in tomorrow. Support units (AM, ASW, Surface combatant screens) go in tomorrow too. I've moved CVE TF cover to the hex immediately below both Rota and Guam. Should be able to provide CAP for adjacent amphibious naval units there.

In with the blade: During the night, an Allied submarine is fended off by a couple DDs in the middle of the Philippine sea. No way this is an errant ASW TF-too out of the way. This position would coincide with movement of the Japanese fleet from Babeldoap due North, probably on a jaunt back to Iwo Jima.

I've ordered my CVTFs to cut through the middle of the Philippine Sea and engage enemy naval forces. If I can make the engagement away from my amphibious TFs and still invoke lopsided losses on the enemy, this will be doubly worthwhile for my fleet CVTFs. Fast carriers, such as these I'm blessed with, are certainly capable of providing amphibious / invasion TF coverage, but they are uniquely suited towards destroying the enemy fleet on the high seas.

The hoped-for intercept position should be far enough away from Pelileu, Babeldoap and Iwo Jima so as to minimize any LBA interference from these locations on my hoped-for naval battle.

Allies June 18 update:

Imperial blood shed: Initial assault waves storm ashore on Rota and Guam. Army troops lead the way-the Marines will come in next turn.

Unloading goes very well on Guam-troops are ashore with supply and undisrupted. Army RCT, two tank battalions, a partial HQ unit, AA and a small base force are in place. Large numbers of Marines will land tomorrow, in case the Japanese foe attempts a shock attack or something equally foolish. Few were lost as unloading casualties.

Rota promised to be a rougher landing. Lots of disruption-mostly because of the limited preparation, I'm sure. There's certainly a lesson there to AFBs and JFBs alike-50% preparation = 50% disruption. Why fight at half your potential? Prepare your targets as best you can.

What's mine is mined: ASW and Minesweeping actions very busy at Guam. Some 21 mines swept this turn. ASW eliminates (sinks) or heavily damages 6 minisubs and two coastal RO-class boats. DD Phelps is hit by a torpedo from a minisub. The sub is beaten to death for its troubles. Phelps is separated into an escort TF and will try to make Eniwetok.

Air war: A series of IJNAF air strikes are launched from Tinian during the day. One large strike sorties towards CVE carriers. Several other more modest strikes flesh out the day's assaults on the CVE TF just south of Rota and Guam.

The CVE TF holds up extremely well to the assaults. Not an enemy plane gets through the murderous CAP. 117 IJNAF planes (mostly A6M2 and A6M5) are victimized, but some 32 Jills and Judys are splashed too. The CVEs lose 15 aircraft-mostly OPs losses. 7 FM-2 wildcats and 7 F6F-3 Hellcats are scratched from the effectives.

Feeling out of place: The large USN Fleet CVTF zips into the Philippine sea to find.....nada. Not an electronic sausage.

Based on the large fleet presence at Iwo Jima (including an identified CV in port), the Imperial fleet skirted my submarine screen and is at anchor around Iwo Jima. Although I have decent air cover and a stout surface force present at Guam, I cannot go gallavanting off away from the amphibious assault here. I need to be closer and able to interdict a potential strike, should one materialize.

I order the fleet CVs back to Guam, where they can hang out in support for a turn or two.

IJN June 21 update:

Hope springs a leak: My LRCAP trap did go off pretty well, all things (crappy pilots, insufficient airframes, crappy airframes, poor direction, no radar, no radios, etc., etc.) considered. Eventually it got beaten back, but it inflicted some losses. I managed to keep the loss ratio under 2:1 (41/22), so that's a victory (albeit a pyrrhic one) in and of itself.

The fighters are withdrawn from Guam and sent to rear bases to recover and / or recombine with other air groups.

Take that, ya bully: In an amusing exchange, RO-64 takes a shot at CV Yorktown. Her 6 TTs miss.

As usual, she is punished for her efforts and depth charged to the surface. In a Khan-like fit of pique, she manages to put a torpedo into BB Washington whilest surfaced. Tee hee.

Washington replies to the insult by sinking her with 16 inch guns. I think that oughta just about do it for RO-64.

Saipan: A couple ASW and MSW TFs enter Saipan waters and quickly depart. The ASW 'sweeps' take a toll-three minisubs are destroyed. I launch 5 more in order to keep the numbers up.

Um...that fleet thing, dude? Yeah, I know...The combined fleet is catching Z's doing little of value just now. They're biding some time and waiting for the Allied transports to draw closer. I'll probably order them to sea in 3-4 days. For now, I'm appreciating the respite in rebuilding air groups and training pilots.

Since they can't be moved off the ship, Zuikaku's airgroups are stripped of pilots and withdrawn. Planes do manage to go to the pools (very welcome additions) and the pilots show up in the pools immediately. They'll be repurposed into other IJNAF units.

The lesson is pretty clear: don't torpedo a battleship, you'll just make it mad.

Allies June 19 update:

Lots of action around Guam and Rota today.

Area waters: (see map below). Tojo moves ships to Yap, presumably for a run in to Guam in the morning. I respond by stopping the unloading process and ordering all TFs a few hexes away. I doubt he'll have enough movement points to react into the new location from Yap, even on full speed in one phase. In any case, I've ordered a stout surface force to the area to cover this rally point. BB New Mexico joins with the rest of Bull Halsey's old BBs (now at 4) in the SCTF running cover.

In the waters around Guam, another 3 Japanese RO-class submarines (no more midgets today) are messily dispatched. One of them got off a 6-torpedo spread on CV Yorktown before being pummeled.

By Marcus, a sub puts a tin fish into BB Mushashi. Looks like the Japanese are swinging wide around the expected exclusion zone and will then swing south. I've split off a few picket DDs and also ordered the fleet CVs to take a look see in the area.

It looks like he's trying a 1-2 split approach for an SCTF intercept of my ships in theatre. My hope is that my CV strike forces deal with the eastermost prong of that attack and let the western prong swing at nothingness around Guam.

Several TFs finish unloading from Guam or Rota and are ordered back-with waypoints-to Eniwetok. He has a few bombers at Truk now, so I may get a few long-distance naval attacks from there in the next couple days.

Guam: Unloading continues to go well. 2nd Marine Div and 4th Marine Regiment are both ashore, along with beaucoup support. There's plenty of supply there for a couple turns too. The unload of the 2nd Mar Div and company occured just in time. An ill-advised Banzai attack ended very badly for the Japanese:

Not on the map: A small Japanese task force consisting of a separated AV and a couple of DDs is moving towards my outpost near Marcus (in the Admiralty islands) in the SW map corner. WTF? Alright, we're going to have a small scale war down here, I guess. I'll put my Fletcher DDs against whatever rustbucket he's got in theatre.

I order 3 DDs on an intercept course with large react orders.
