Wanted to start some community mod project with whomever would like to participate.
The idea is straightforward: Joining together to see if we can create something interesting together. It is open for everybody (no modding background required).

First we would need to align on a vision.
Then I assume we would detail a bit what should be included and detail some concepts. The idea is then that everybody who wants to contribute can take over some part (like making the map, providing graphics, setting up SFTs, writing events, playtesting etc) and then see how far we get.
We can use the forum for discussion and maybe doodle for voting as necessary.

If you are interested please post.
First thing will be to brainstorm for some setup and vision...
List of suggested settings (still open):
1. Grand scale, multi-regime conquest game
2. Hypothetical 1980+ invasion of Western Europe by Warsaw Pact
3. Big WWI scenario
4. WWII scenario from Barbarossa up to the late 45´s, and with some possible cold war developments
5. Great war mod for random games
6. "Race to Berlin"; competitive co-operation game between the different Soviet commanders
7. Science-Fiction (Star Wars / Dune)

Depending on what type of scenario, I would be glad to contribute to the map building aspect. (you can check out an example of my work on the Community website scenario bank - Europa basic map)

Subject matter:
My preference would be for a grand scale, multi-regime conquest game. Less interested in single battle scenarios...

There are somethings I'd like to recommend when developing software in a group.
  • the project is located in a dropbox folder shared by all participants
  • the project takes advantage of the different "Import" functionalities of the editor (the use should depend on number of active developers and above all, convinience)
    • locationtypes, SFT types and so forth can all be created in independent masterfiles and then imported to a "Master" masterfile
    • this is expecially true for event development
  • documentation is key: there should be a changelog containing notes of all changes mad, who made them and where
  • independent functions should be documented in an API, containing such things as description, name of event, id number of event, eventgroup, masterfile, inputs and outputs
I'm not sure exactly how all tmpVars are passed between caller and callee of events but I do know that tmpVars900+ are global for the entire callstack. Because 900 is an easy number to remember I would suggest that these are made standard function argument. One should be careful to note that these variable are passed by reference: changes to the variable inside the called function will change its value outside it. Therefore you can never trust that the values of those variables are what you expect them to be after calling a function (unless, of course, the function developer made a promise that it be what you expect).

Thanks for the replies so far. I agree that good coordination is important in these kind of endeavours. I am hopeful that however coding itself will not be the main task of modding.

@mgaffn1: Looked at your map some days ago and really liked it. Thanks for sharing. I think that your map will lend itself to some nice scenarios. The one which came to my mind would be some sort of a hypothetical 1980+ invasion of Western Europe by Warsaw Pact forces (along the lines of C64 Nato Commander). With this engine a lot of things could be incorporated (like: simulating a complex command structure for Nato, an OOB with airborne troops, helicopters and MBTs, chemical and tactical nuclear strikes, political repercussions of events, Reforger buildup, etc). Might even be interesting to add part of the middle-east to the map... For this scenario from my perspective the biggest challenge would be to create reasonable OOBs and of course to get the AI to play this at some point... Grymme made a very interesting WIII scenario with a global focus but this could be maybe with a smaller and more detailed focus.

However will still be open for suggestions as to setup so if there are other suggestions please post. My other suggestion would be to do something along the lines of Star Wars or Dune..

I would suggest a big WWI scenario....but your idea of WWIII is great too. I could help regardless of what will be the final decision. Another interesting project I have would be a WWII scenario from Barbarossa up to the late 45´s, and with some possible cold war developments. It would be a three player game (maybe with each player commanding more than one regime).

I have mainly two ideas for scenarios.

The first is a Great war mod for random games
Basically the same game but without most of the machanized units and with a few changes.(I posted these suggestions somewhere else also)

The basic fighting unit for both attack and defence will be Rifle's. The attack value of rifle's should be increased to match the defencive value to reflect the doctrines of the time. To make it historical, maximum and per turn entrenchment should be increased. This way, I figure, it will be quite possible to displace an entrenched unit but the advance will be very vulnerable to counterattack, neatly reflecting the historical case of both western and eastern fronts.

Artillery is a integral part of any army of the era, so much in fact that I think about introducing artillery shells as a constructible resource. This forces players to stock up on shells before major offencives and will probably cause a shell crisis or two.

Airpower was comperativly useless at influencing the battle directly back then. In order to not marginalize the airwar completly, suggest that the only efficient recon unit should be a observation balloon and the only efficient way of killing that is the fighter aircraft. That way air supremacy means the enemy can't know what you're doing, something that could potetionally be worth spending a lot of resources in but probably isn't, not in the beginning anyway.

The last thing I'd like to introduce is the idea of reserves that could be mobilized. Before mobilization there are a unit called "reservist" and costs about half what a rifle costs. This unit it not a figting unit, it has no combat stats, no movement and a heavy weight so it cant be transported by horses. Upon mobilization, all reservists are transformed into rifles with 70 rdn and the ability to build reservists disapears. This way all players have a cheap way of producing infantry early. Hopefully there will be terrible tension in who mobilizes and when, because no one will want to mobilize in defence (especially if the opponent havent mobilized yet) because then the ability to produce cheap infantry is lost for the entire game.

The other idea I had in mind was a "race to berlin" scenario that would play out as a competetive co-operation game between the different Soviet commanders that tries to snatch as big piece of the glory of defeating germany as possible. Scores should be determined by the number of victory points captured and powerpoints destroyed by each player. There should be some ability to undermine your fellow commanders, maybe by causing suspicion the loyalty of the junior officers of some particularly succesful commander. All such things should be done with care though as if they're too slow, the allies might get to Berlin first by early summer or so. This scenario might be impossible to balance but it would be fun to try.

My vote would go for the Warsaw Pact 80s invasion of Western Europe and possible Middle East. My scenario is really old and i do think something much better could be made.

For maps and OOB i think an inspiration could be the Third World War series by GDW games. There are four games. The Third World War, Southern Front, Arctic Front and Persian Gulf front.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3605/the-third-world-war

A good way to start would be to download any VASSAL or similar engine modules and they could be used for overlay for map making.

I could possibly contribute in two ways if anyone is interested. I have a masterfile where i have tried to accomplish something like an comprehensive equipment database. I used a TOAW equipment database as inspiration. So what this has is something like 1 900+ different SFTs. Obviously i have not finished all these SFTs but all the names are there and they are sorted into order. So for example all modern US, Soviet, British, French etc airplanes, tanks etc are there. So if someone wanted to work on the SFTs i could certainly give them a flying start. When i get home from work i can export a text datafile and post it so you can see what i am talking about. My idea for this database would be that it would be a common asset and then when someone made a scenario they would fill in values in the appropriate SFTs with pictures and gradually it would expand until anyone had access to the database whenever they wanted to do an scenario. So far i have made scenarios and filled in (partly) german, italian, british, american and japanese units during WWII.

Second i could do some work on placing units, OOB etc..

Another suggestion would be to have a project dictator whose word goes (Lunaticus).

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the general way to decide things will be to vote with everybody who has a handle on the matrixforum getting to participate (lateron I think only the people actively contributing will be included). I will collect all suggestions made into the first post to have some overview. Lets say we give everybody some more time for suggestions of settings and then we decide.

I have a Great war mod, with units from 1900-1920´s that could be useful in the event we decide to do a Great war random mod....

I would vote for the 1980's NATO vs. Warsaw pact. Funny, but a few months ago I dusted off my copy of Red Storm Rising and sat down for a good hypothetical WW3 read....

Second choice would be great war... as long as we could make the SFTypes interesting.

Ok. I declare voting to be open.
Here is the link:
http://doodle.com/2czhucb547mgn7bn
Please use your matrixforum user to vote. Everybody gets one vote. I would say we close the doodle polling station on Saturday 10 AM CET / Saturday 4 AM Eastern.
Lets see how this turns out!

I think a space scenario done with keeping the AI needs in mind will be very welcome addition to the scenariobank.
Also i think a ww1 random game mod might work very well since the nature of ww1 combat puts less presure on the AI.

Whatever you guys decide, i will see what i can do to help in the form of adding some checks and execs needed for scripting needs.

best,
Vic

Well it seems we have a clear winner which is a Science-Fiction (Star Wars/Dune) Mod.
I am positively impressed by the number of votes cast. Good to see that there is some interest to further this idea and see where it is heading. I am sure the other options will also see some great mod at some point in time.
Being a great Sci-Fi fan myself I am looking forward to see how we continue. The most interesting question now from my perspective is to detail the idea out a bit more. The first and most deep decision is likely whether this should be a multi-player human only mod or a mod to play against the AI. I think both sides have good merit however we will likely need to focus on one alternative. Or put differently: Including some features and some designs would exclude an AI playability.
The additional question is what specific setting do we want? A "Dune" mod could be concentrated on Arrakis with several faction fighting for control. There also is a great boardgame on this subject. Or it could be a larger setting with several planets like the Jihad which Paul starts iirc in book 2.
For Star Wars also several options come to mind. A large galaxy setting (maybe including a political dimension). Or an invasion of Hoth. Or some potential planetary invasion.

Please post your suggestions!

If you guys will go for an AI capable scenario I will provide feedback and coaching about what to do and what not to do to make it work best. Basically to make an SF scenario work with the AI the most important thing is that you should go for land only map with land hexes that resemble space ( so not using sea for space and land for planets).

After having thought about this somewhat more is my suggestion for a Dune mod:
Setup is semi-cooperative: All human players are allied and play on the Atreides/Fremen side (with several Fremen tribes maybe). Then there is the Harkommen/Imperator side who can be AI-controlled and is fighting all the players. The map is Arrakis (no need for a navy which makes things easier for the AI) with a lot of desert, some spice hexes, some urban hexes etc. Spice is maybe shifting around and you have to move your Ornithopters and sandworms to harvest it. The Fremen might cultivate the desert maybe...
The catch may be that if the Fremen/Atreides side wins then there will also be determined an inidividual winner so there is some competition. Or any player on that side may after all declare their allegiange to the Imperator (maybe they get to marry Irulan?) and switch sides so there is some tension? And maybe there are also some neutral regimes (Guild, Bene Gesserit, Landsraad) whose allegiance can be bought?
And if players want to solo play they can then play all the regimes on the Atreides/Fremen side against the AI (without the traitor element) ...

I don't know much about events scripting or graphics, but I would love to help with all the other details.

These are all quick suggestions which I did not think too hard about:

Moving spice fields: The AI is unlikely to be able to handle it. This assumes that moving spice fields would work by an event checking for units that are on top of spice fields, and then adding spice to the players appropriately. On the other hand, perhaps they could work in a cycle like this:
- Stage 1: Spice Bloom: Randomly appears on the map. Requires a Spice Harvester to "build" the next stage.
- Stage 2: Spice Field: Unrealistically, this will keep on producing, even if a Spice Harvester is not on it. Once built, there is a chance every round to transform to the next stage.
- Stage 3: Exhausted: Provides less spice, eventually runs out and turns back into normal terrain.
For this cycle to work, there would have to be no engineering except for that which is done by Spice Harvesters - either that, or simply making Spice Harvesters the only engineering-type unit that can move onto spice blooms.

Strategic Resources:
- Spice (required to build PPs? Definitely required to build other kinds of advanced units.)
- Water (the main resource for moving and attacking, effectively replacing Oil?)
- Manpower
- Nobles (unless the AI cannot handle the idea that it is only able to produce a certain number of Staff. Alternatively, Sardaukar Officers may not consume any nobles at all.)

SFType Categories (for damage & favorite target purposes):
- Nobles / Special Characters
- Infantry
- Vehicles
- Air
- Drones
- Sandworms

Atomics: They probably shouldn't be in the game, unless the AI can handle suicide nuke-type units. Alternatively, the AI may get helper events such as "Used a Stone-Burner to burn out Paul Atreides' eyes" or "Destroyed the Shield Wall"

Bene Gesserit: Their main goal is to have Paul Atreides completely under their control, or to kill him and thus be able to work on the much-more-pliable Alia. Making a pact with them can be useful for increasing the Morale of those People types who are susceptible to the social-cultural engineering programmes. Their SFTypes are most effective against Nobles and Infantry.

Bene Tleilaxu: Their main goal is to determine how to artificially-produce spice. For gameplay purposes, this means that making a pact with them results in the complete destruction of spice fields or having to donate sandworms to them. This also greatly worsens relations with all Fremen.

Drones: Very "glass-cannon" units, if a noble attacks a drone first then he can just snatch it out of the air with his bare hands. But, if a drone can get the drop on a noble, it will absolutely kill him.

IX: Their forbidden thinking machines can act as excellent Staff and provide great combat effectiveness, thus letting you put more forces on the front compared to relying entirely on nobles and mentats. However, making a pact with IX will probably cause all AI-controlled factions to immediately declare war on you.

Lasguns: Since they cause a nuclear explosion when they shoot shields, any SFTypes wielding them would definitely be suicide units.

Mentats: Probably classified as "nobles," they can provide combat effectiveness but not morale. If you want your troops to fight to the death, only real nobles / special characters will do the job.

Sandworms: They provide Landcap, and are much more efficient than any vehicle. They also make excellent mobilizers across sand, and provide some cover to infantry. Last but not least, they move very quickly through sand and are excellent in combat at sand.

Thanks for the suggestions SSFSX17, sounds good and implementable. This is supposed to be a community project so everybody can join and make suggestions or take over part of the development work. I think it would be great to hear some more suggestions and then begin to sort things out.
So this thread is open to further suggestions ...

@Bombur: Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Dune-40th-Anniversary-Chronicles-Book/dp/0441013597/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306183054&sr=8-1
For a quick summary try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_%28novel%29
The book can be highly recommended.

So ... as this is an attempt at a community project I think it might be kind of interesting to hear some more suggestions as to setup?

Looking for an alternative Sci-Fi scenario?
Maybe an asymetric alien invasion game.
There could be several alien factions battling for a very sought after resource. There are also several factions of a technologically inferior species that is not at all interested in this resource but is only concerned with controlling as much native population as possible.

This way there would be two wars on top of eachother and it could result in some very interesting diplomatics.

Imagine different peoplegroups fighting for completely different resources - not just oil and ore, but more...

people 1 needs oil to function,
people 2 need water and ore, but could care less about oil
people 3 needs electricity, but not oil, water, or ore...
you get the picture

Good suggestions. I think some of them might be combined.
E.g. it could be a Dune setting with maybe the Fremen requiring Water urgently. The Atreides war equipment. The Harkonnens quality manpower. The Emperor spice. Etc.
Asymmetric Alien invasion game might also work in a Dune setting with the Fremen taking the roles of the natives all other trying to grab spice.

I think the most important decision might be if we want to work human-only or include AI and in which role...

All Humans setup:
- House Corrino - gets Sardaukar, who are matched only by Fremen
- House Harkonnen - gets more PPs due to their deviousness and trickery
- House Atreides - excellent morale
- Fremen - gets more water, and their adult warriors are a match for Sardaukar

Co-op vs. AI setup:
- Jessica Atreides - main objective is to restore House Atreides and turn Dune into a water planet
- Paul Atreides - main objective is to become Emperor by marrying Princess Irulan
- Stilgar - main objective is to get all Fremen tribes into the allies

Also - if this is a democracy (which is not necessarily good for getting a community project done in a timely manner) then I would vote for a co-op vs. the AI setup. I have no opinion towards Dune or to an alien invasion scenario. In the case of the latter, using a Harry Turtledove type of situation would allow the re-use of existing Advanced Tactics data.

Yes from my point of view this is a democratic community mod project. Main goal is to have fun for everybody who is participating.

Ok so my suggestion to proceed is as follows: I will summarize what I understood from the suggestions into a joint conceptual text. Then everybody who wants to be in can add their view or edit the text and provide a new version and then we can see how things go from here.

Name of the Mod: ???
Setup: Dune
Map: Arrakis (no water hexes). Maybe with some offworld unconnected planets (Caladan, Giedi Prime, Salusa Secundus,...). Only land and air units are available, ships are represented by cards.
Mode: Semi-Cooperative. All human players play against the AI. There is potential benefit of backstabbing between the human players.
Regimes: 3 Human (e.g. Paul Atreides, Jessica Atreides, Fremen). 1 AI (Harkonnen/Emperor). Open: Can be played with 3 human players or 1 human player playing all three regimes (without backstabbing).
All regimes are set up to give a very different feel. E.g. get different bonuses, have different SFT, have different goals. Open: Should the evil faction be playable by a human player?
Features (to be discussed)
- Strategic resources. Players need to exchange them as they are scarce and not everybody will get each. Water, manpower, nobles, equipment.
- Spice (obviously). Harvest via moving spice fields
- Atomics
- Bene Gesserit (heir main goal is to have Paul Atreides completely under their control, or to kill him and thus be able to work on the much-more-pliable Alia. Making a pact with them can be useful for increasing the Morale of those People types who are susceptible to the social-cultural engineering programmes. Their SFTypes are most effective against Nobles and Infantry.)
- Bene Tleilaxu (heir main goal is to determine how to artificially-produce spice. For gameplay purposes, this means that making a pact with them results in the complete destruction of spice fields or having to donate sandworms to them. This also greatly worsens relations with all Fremen. )
- Drones (Very "glass-cannon" units vs nobles)
- IX (Their forbidden thinking machines can act as excellent Staff and provide great combat effectiveness, thus letting you put more forces on the front compared to relying entirely on nobles and mentats. However, making a pact with IX will probably cause all AI-controlled factions to immediately declare war on you. )
- Lasguns: Since they cause a nuclear explosion when they shoot shields, any SFTypes wielding them would definitely be suicide units.
- Mentats: Probably classified as "nobles," they can provide combat effectiveness but not morale. If you want your troops to fight to the death, only real nobles / special characters will do the job.
- Sandworms: They provide Landcap, and are much more efficient than any vehicle. They also make excellent mobilizers across sand, and provide some cover to infantry. Last but not least, they move very quickly through sand and are excellent in combat at sand.
- Fremen player can cultivate the desert.
- There will be a diplomatic system which measures what neutral factions are thinking of the human/AI faction. Maybe they also can give missions, rewards etc to the player or oppose them...
SFT:
- Nobles / Special Characters
- Infantry
- Vehicles
- Air
- Drones
- Sandworms
and more
Special Races:
- Sardaukar
- Fremen

Mmh. I hope there is some interest to collaborate? I forgot to mention how we might conutinue in case there is. Maybe we split up the work a bit:
One modder can take over map creation.
Another could detail the SFT.
Another could work on the graphics.
And another modder (or group) could work on regime setup and events.
Volunteers?
