Rhonda, this is meant in the spirit of "sometimes laws make little sense!" rather than "naughty naughty!"

You probably broke several federal laws by picking up and transporting that dead red-tailed hawk.  There are laws on the books that prohibit possession of even the feathers of a raptor.

Years ago, I found a dead red-shouldered hawk on the highway.  I stopped and put it in the bed of my pickup, planning to take it to the Department of Natural Resources office just down the road.  Then I remembered how some state officers get a little worked up about things, so, even though I know most of the officers there, I stopped again and discarded the hawk into a thicket.

You did the right thing, no doubt; just don't tell any Federal Fish & Wildlife Service people.

I knew that applied to Bald Eagles, didn't know it applied to all birds of prey. Well, the Indians have special license to possess the feathers. An eagle feather is always used during a cedar ceremony (which I have participated in numerous times). Guess it's like the license to use Peyote (didn't try that one).

This is my "run around shoveling manure" outfit... not exactly Victoria's Secret calibre, but these are honest pics of a decrepit retiree trying to get back into shape Didn't expect visitors, but put a camera into their hands anyway and said "shoot around" and these are some of the results.

Anyway, these are my horses... enjoy.

Have you softened her up with a few carrots, apples, and a bit of grain (hand fed)?

Gorgeous horse :)

Yes indeed. She was a rescue...half starved and abused. In the beginning she'd pin her ears and grimmace at anyone who came near her and was not above kicking and biting.

Now she's softened up to the point where she only nibbles.....though last night she nibbled and then ripped off a piece of the seat of my jeans. Probably because i had not seen her in a couple days. On approach her ears will pin....then when she sees its me, the ears go full up for i'm happy to see you.....one ear up, one down for I'm happy your here but your in trouble......and the often seen....ears halfway up halfway down....for "YOU ARE IN TROUBLE MISTER. Tempermental cranky demanding thing.

A good curry will usually loosen her up......except for last night where a fabric sacrifice was required.

Oh, that sure doesn't sound good...

And Rhonda, I love your hat!
Since I, err, have less hair than I once had I almost always wear a hat during the summerheat, my body can soak up a lot of heat but not my scalp. The sun fries my brain see?

My hat is a Minnetonka Fold Up Hat for those who are intrigued from the pictures. It is uni-sex, leather, and totally indestructible. It's the only hat I've ever owned (and the only one people ever thought I looked good in).

Available from a lot of places (just search) but Amazon has it the cheapest:

http://www.amazon.com/Minnetonka-Fold-Up-Leather-Hat/dp/B000RZK87S

There is a story to it, actually, I was in a trading post on the rez with a few friends and I saw this hat... I picked it up and put it on as a joke... it fit perfectly... looked in the mirror and thought... HEY that isn't bad! A second later my friends came arond and started raving about it so I bought it. That was about five years ago and it became my trademark at the school. People stop me in a store and ask where to get one.

If you are outdoors a lot this is one great, rugged hat. Highly recommended!

I saw a beautiful hawk today. Driving along a road on top of a ridge. The hawk was suspended by the updraft of the wind about 10 feet above and 10 feet over from my windshield.

I've been told that a hawk flying over you is good fortune.

well...without going into messy details....my partner left me this year for a younger model that she had started seeing. She wanted to do the whole "friends" thing of course which included continuing to work together with our horses. I am not doing the 'friends' thing but i have been continuing to go to the place where she is very generously allowed to keep her three pets free of charge (only footing the cost of hay and feed)..mainly in order to keep seeing the mare, who for some reason seems to be attached to my sorry a$$.

Its a wierd...uncomfortable situation....usually i show up at night, well after i know my X has left to go home to her new life. I try not to advertise my presence but a few nights ago i made the mistake of deciding to clean up the Mare's appearance. She allows me to clip her without tranqs or other means of persuasion (which always p/o'd the X off because mare won't let her work on her without a fight). On the subject of manes however, even I can't get away with pulling her mane without her getting pissy so we've been forced to use "cheaters" to cut her mane which even on a good day, looks terrible. Doesn't help that i'm out of practice. The end result was better than the long stragley mane she had, but not super pretty either. Knowing my "X" is an anal retentive perfectionist, i left plenty of length for her to "correct" my work which i knew from long experience would not be up to her standards (noone's horsemanship is when it comes to her)

At worst...I expected maybe a nasty note......or a text'd shout telling me to not mess with her animal(s) again like that. The attached image is what i found instead the next night. I feel very bad about this....can't even generate any real anger at my X. My poor mare has no mane!!!!!!! She shaved it completely off which i can only interpret as a serious FU gesture in my direction. I'd rather she had left a nasty note telling me to stay the **** away. I figure after this incident that i really should take the advice of 99% of my friends and as Tom Petty once song....."not come 'round her no-more" That or i need to just sneak in on occasion and brush and run. The owner of the property has told me i'm always welcome there, but legally my X owns the horses. Like i said....its an awkward situation......and I won't have Uma suffer for it.
