Im not sure how to properly make a bridge? I know there is a height thing involved but how could one easily make a simple bridge or road in MM?

Also, how do you use Autogen for trees and buildings (structures)? I read the manual part but Im still confused?

Rick should be able to tell you how to make a bridge.

That's why I created the pictorial tutorial.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2801622

It explains how to do this in detail and shows screen shots of how to do it.

Good Hunting.

I have some MM questions:

1) I need to precisely hand place some trees using shift-click. While it works great for quickly placing them, how do I do so with trees pointing in random directions? Selecting the "Z" random direction option seems to only work for auto-gen trees.

2) I've mistakenly placed a bunch of bushes after I placed some trees. How do I sort all of the bushes above the trees in the structure list to keep the "brush" terrain from overwriting the "woods" terrain?

3) I'm always getting the >32 color error. I mean always, no matter what I do. What am I doing wrong?

You're getting the >32 colors error because while the map is loading you did something else on your computer.

Let the map load completely before doing anything else.

See post #28 of this thread.

Gijas,

To create a bridge crossing in Map Maker, In the structures section of MM, browse the structures folder to the Bridges subfolder and select the bridge you want to use. On the Struct dropdown choose Bridge for the type (near botton of list), setting this will set the correct defaults for a bridge. You can then hold down the shift key and left clik on the map where you want the bridge. You can place it close to proper location, then fine tune the placement and the elevation while you are in Map Scene Edit.

It is likely you will need to adjust the location to fit your creek, and also the vertical position. these are easiest done in Map Scene Edit and then import the changes back into MM.

Post more questions if this doesn't help. (Mobius can also help, he's not only placed quite a few bridges, he's also created specific bridge models of actual bridges).

As far as autogens, there is also a Vid tutorial on using Autogens I think. But normally you won't want to use autogens to do buildings as they require specific placement locations usually.

thanks
rick

If you are placing fixed structures, like trees in specific places along a road or as a windbreak, the random direction option will not be applied. You will need to randomly rotate the red direction carat yourself.

this depends on what you placed the trees (and brush) in. If you are placing the brush in terrain coded as woods, then I would code the brush as woods as well. if the brush is being scattered in open or grassy terrain, then I would code the brush as brush.

In either case you can try sorting the structures, but you might have to manually move the brush structures using the arror keys.

A couple of things can cause this. the most common is what Mad Russian indicated, tyring to do something that opens another window while MM is trying to interpret the map. the second thing that commonly causes this is if you've done any editing of the terrain map in a paint program. If you edit the terrain map in a paint program, you want to make sure you turn off AntiAliasing, or Blending, which many paint programs put on as default. you want to draw with 'pure' colors and use overwrite rather than blend option.

thanks
rick

I created this pictorial tutorial so it could help answer these kinds of questions.

Auto-genning is covered starting in post #120 on this page of the tutorial.

Where do you turn those off in Paint.net?

Good Hunting.

Page 10 of the Map maker Guide shows a scnshot of where in Paint.net these settings are found. But if they will revert back to the default settings each time Paint.net is started. to change the default settings in paint.net you need to go to the tools dropdown and choose the set defaults option, then go to bottom of screen and set the 'rasterization' options.

See scrn shot below:

That's for AntiAliasing I believe. So where do you set the defaults if you want to draw with 'pure' colors and use overwrite rather than blend option?

Good Hunting.

The screen shot above show where both default settings are, one is AA (jagged line), the other blending (beaker).

thanks

Thanks guys. I figured it out but I hate reading... just lazy. Downloaded Paint.net and made my road texture in about a minute and had my first map done in a half and hour. Not bad. The map area is in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). It takes a bit (especially with me) but I think anyone can learn MM.
