Hey Folks, I'm looking for game recommendations for something similar to the ninetndo GBA & DS Advance Wars series. I don't mind if it's a little more complex, but preferably it would be something that I don't have to worry much about unit morale or supply lines and such. I don't mind if those game mechanics are there, but having them optional, or having them not play a big part, is preferred.

WWII Time of Wrath doesn't fit this since there are still lots of details to take into account that mean my tanks will often lose badly to infantry.

Preferably something on the newer side, i.e., last 7-10 years. The Battle Isle series is just too graphically dated for me to enjoy, not to mention glitchy on newer systems-- even the GOG dosbox version doesn't run right for me.

I know Advanced Tactics is widely recommended, but it looks like it's more on the complex side of morale & supply management.

Something that right in between Advance Wars & the Strategic Command series for complexity might be perfect.

Oh, and it should be real-world, i.e., not SciFi or Fantasy. So, after all of those requirements, any recommendations?

You could try Future Wars - (demo available), or Shattered Union. I doubt you'll find anything that comes closer to Advance Wars on the PC. I found both games enjoyable.

Shattered Union, the watered-watered-watered down version of Panzer General. Well, at least I liked how even the different jets had different engine sounds :P

Re: Future Wars-- It's strange, I never minded the fiction Advance Wars setting, but for just about every PC game, the lack of a real-world connections is a turn-off. If it was darker/grittier (We need more gray & brown over here!) I think I wouldn't mind as much.

I may have to finally check out Shattered Union though-- I picked it up on the super cheap a while back, like $2 on a Steam sale, but always put off playing it based on a few poor reviews I'd read.

Battlefield Academy is definitely very high on my wish-list, it's just not the current itch I'm trying to scratch (Where are my hexes!?!?!)

Actually, Panzer Corp http://www.slitherine.com/games/panzer_corps_pc might be just what I'm looking for if I manage to wait a few more days, and if it's more toward the casual end of the spectrum.

In the last day or so, I've also occupied myself a bit with Open General http://luis-guzman.com/OpenGen.html and Panzer General Forever http://rudankort.spb.ru/pgforever/ They're great, but haven't quite ignited that "Just One More Turn!" high that I'm chasing.

I would like Panzer General a lot better if it were better abstracted with less unit stats and fewer different almost identical unit types. Yet the first thing I see when they promote Panzer Corps is that it has more unit types, more stats (20? many great games have 2 or 3, surely 5 or 6 would be enough for a entry-level light game) and lots of different nations. Exactly the things I did not want to see "fixed". Now if they had cut down on unit types and nations to make the game more focused, removed naval units, airbased aircraft, supply lines rather than micro-manage supplies, and possibly something else I forgot, that would be fantastic. Too bad they had to take the computer-wargames-must-be-spreadsheet-exercises route to fun.

Hopefully they DID fix a few of the old problems. Couldn't tell. But the focus on bigger numbers scares me away.

Edit: Must say that the graphics looks very nice at least. It is probably fun too. I just spend too much time thinking about what I would like to see added to or removed from PG that I get easily disappointed when someone takes it in another direction.

Added detail must be discouraging but gameplay is definitly an improved Advance Wars.
