However....after a 2 day bombardment Fifth Fleet is a sitting duck out in the middle of the central Pacific without a trace of support from land based air forces. Three CVEs with over 80 fighters provide CAP over Eniwetok while 11 fleet carriers and 5 CVLs stand just offshore......about 46 miles SW of Eniwetok..... in case KB comes to play next turn. CV Victorious remains on station off Eniwetok with the 10 USN CVs even though she is scheduled to withdraw this turn. This will be her last CENTPAC operation and then she will be withdrawn from the Pacific. Tomorrow there will be both a massive naval bombardment and an aerial bombardment as the Kiwis storm ashore on a 6000 stacxking limit atoll. APAs/AKAs/LSTs/AKs continue to load the assault force left on Roi-Namur.....last turn there were over 25,000 troops on a 6000 stacking limit atoll and now there are 15,000 troops so hopefuly we are un der the stacking limit next turn and then I can unload seabees to start filling in the holes on the pockmarked runways. SWPAC Fifth Air Force pounds the Japanese defenders at Hollandia with tactical, medium and heavy bombers. Next turn I US Corps will launch a deliberate assault here. II AUSTRALIAN CORPS Evidently BB Musashi was very heavily damaged last turn as she limped a mere 3 hexes north to Ambon but did not enter port as Dave evidently thought I would be port bombing at Ambon. I had rerouted subs patrols from nearly a dozen subs to positions in the Banda Sea due west of where we hit BB Musashi last turn as I thought Dave would try to move her out of range of my bombers towards Dili and the other ports on Timor. But since Bb Musashi was only moved 3 hexes her damage must be greater than I originally thought. Dave went all out to save BB Musashi. Group patrol altitude is 42000 Raid is overhead My naval bombers based on Kai-eilanden had been shot up pretty well on the previous turn when they initially attacked BB Yamayo, BB Musashi and CA Mogami so I withdrew all the naval attack squadrons...SBDs, TBFs and Beaufort VIIIs back to Darwin to rebuild. I thought that all 3 of the IJN capital ships would be out of range of my land based air this turn so I made no special effort to mass naval bombers against them and instead chose to rely on the Allied subs...and then of course I placed them on intercept locations to the west when in fact Dave retreated to the north. So there were just a few attack AC at Dobo that were available to attack BB Musashi..... but Dave CAPed and LRCAPed BB Musashi at Ambon with some 183 fighters and the Allied naval bombers were easily repulsed: Morning Air attack on TF, near Ambon at 76,109 Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid detected at 76 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
