Malaya
In the center of the peninsula our forces that struck out from Khota Bharu catch up to the 8th Indian and FMSV brigades and a Base Force. So all IJA bombers in the area pound the enemy ground troops and our 56th Infantry Regiment is able pushes the enemy back to Temuloh (2:1). The 56th will continue to move along, but if may run up against more resistance at Temuloh as it appears that the enemy units cut off from Singapore have gather at this base.

Near Phuket, Bettys from Khota Bharu managed to torpedo the TK Pinna and the AM Ballarat, sinking both ships.

Tomorrow our forces will attack Alor Star, and I expect they will take the base.

DEI
Tarakan is the new target here. Today Natori is back in action moving offshore and bringing the fight to enemy MTB's rather than risk those MTB's later hitting the battleships and transports that should hit the beaches tomorrow. In Natori's first encounter, 1 of 5 MTBs is taken out. Then the group finds a HDML and easily sinks that ship as well.

6x Zeros and 14x Bettys fly from Manado after recon reports large ships off the coast of Balikpapan. The IJN planes find the cruisers Tromp and Boise. 10x P-40E Warhawks are on CAP but the Zeros keep them busy. The Bettys however are unable to put their bombs on target and the Boise is left unscathed.


A prime target is missed


Our Java invasion force rendezvous with the KB and surface cover. The ships should be near Sinkawang tomorrow and will make straight for the western end of Java.

Philippines
Catanduanes is occupied by our rowboat troops.

6x PBY-4 Catalinas attack a DMS and DD on ASW patrol south of Formosa, but all torpedoes miss. We'll pull back the DD's and just leave PB's on patrol until the PBY risk has been reduced.

Artillery bombardment at Clark doesn't produce much better results than yesterday, but the enemy has limited supplies but we do not, so the shelling will continue. Hopefully the additional units from Hong Kong will help.

Two SNLF forces capture Iba, clearing an airfield and destroying 10 P-40E Warhawks on the ground. More importantly, this now allows us to focus all air force in the theater on attacking Clark to ensure no air threat is able to be coordinated, thus allowing our naval and army dive bombers to keep a close eye out for suicide supply ships headed for Luzon. One SNLF will move on to Clark, the other will wait for transports to lift it to Subic Bay.

Our forces continue to march on Manilla from the south and should be in the city in just a few more days. Intel shows less than 10,000 troops in the city now.

Pacific
Mostly quiet here. Air units shift around a bit to take on replacements at Truk. Tomorrow will be the day that the fleet sets sail for Rabaul.

China
Hong Kong mine clearing continues, 73 more mines removed today and it appears they are all cleared. Today our Artillery units and the 38th Division finish loading and set sail. The Artillery will sail for Iba and the 38th will head to Batavia.

Various air attacks continue. A DA near Tsiaotso fails at 1:2. More reinforcements continue to move into place.

Submarines
As detailed in the previous posting, I-20 decides not to attack ACM Kookaburra near Woodlark Island and managed to evade the ensuing ASW coutner attack.

The next morning I-173 puts two torpedoes into the heavy cruiser Australia. The first torpedo causes a magazine explosion and the second ensures the ship goes down. Definitely a big win for the submarine forces.

Malaya
Like the enemy units in the jungle yesterday, all land based army bombers hit the enemy troops at Alor Star today. The aerial assaults help to ensure that our attack is successful (3:1). 2600 Allied casualties and 9x Buffalos destroyed on the ground. Our troops will continue to march south.

Near Tavoy, 31x Nates meet 10 unescorted Blenheim IVs. Only one is killed outright, but five are damaged and more importantly the enemy bombers don't score enough hits to drop our armored unit out of move mode.

At Singapore, 27x A6M from the KB and 9x Vals attack the MMS-51. The small ship was easily sunk, but more importantly, the Zeros killed off half a dozen Buffalos on their way in.

DEI
At Tarakan, the big ships move in ahead of the invasion force. A task force centered around Nagato and Ise find a couple HDMLs, an AG and an xAP and sink them all easily even in the dim moonlight (14%). Shortly after, our amphib force take advantage of the low light to move in on the beaches. Battleship Fuso takes most of the heavy fire from the 120mm guns on the shoreline and returns fire for suppression effect as well. The transports make it in in good shape and the three parts of the 124th Inf Bn are all unloaded in good order. They will make a go at the base tomorrow just to see what they are facing.

During the day, a destroyer group moves in on Kendari. We came in the daytime to avoid getting ambushed by PT boats. Since our Kendari force should arrive in a couple days it was decide to clear the area of enemy ships just like at Tarakan. The destroyers first found 2 xAKLs that tried to get underway, but were unable to before our destroyers sunk both ships. Next they encountered 6 TM boats. They sunk 4, and damaged another that didn't sink. The two remaining ships were chase away to the northwest of Kendari.


TM's are much easier to manage in daylight


Some B-17D's hit Manado today, catching a Betty on the ground and destroying it.

Philippines
Several attacks are launched against Clark. First 15x A6M2;s go against 16x P-40B and 15x P-40E Warhawks. We lose one Zero but down 5 of the Warhawks. Some Nells arrive next and although some Warhawks take one down, most make it through and hit the airfield reasonably well, destroying 3x P-35A and 1x O-47A on the ground. Finally, 13x Oscar(b), 12x Oscar(c) and 8 Ki-44 Tojos sweep the base to find just a couple P-40's left - both are shot down. The airways clear, 10x Sonia's hit the airfield doing minor damage.


With only two major bases left, we feel good about sweeping Clark


Pacific
Our fleet is gathered up and given order to sail for Rabaul!

China
We put some Nates up against the Chinese milk runs at Changsha today. 16x Nates met 6x A-29A Hudson, 4x DB-3M and 6x SB-III. 4 of the enemy planes did not return home.

Hwaiyin is occupied by Japanese forces since the Chinese military units had left the base a few days ago.

Submarines
The subs continue their good work. Today I-160 near Sepandjang torpedoes and sinks the xAKL Dos Hermanos. DD Vampire tries to catch I-160 but fails.

Malaya
The Dutch sub KXIII hits the destroyer Hakaze with a torpedo off the coast of Mersing, sinking the destroyer. The light losses couldn't last forever, so we can't complain much about losing this DD.

Bettys from Khota Bharu sink a couple HDML's at Medan. Army dive bombers and recon move into Alor Star now that air support has arrived.

DEI
Supplies continue to unload at Tarakan while our troops attack the base. Nagato and Ise catch an xAKL trying to get away and sink the ship. Surprisingly the base is captured on the first assault (6:1, forts 1). We also destroy 3x Do-24K-1 planes on the ground. This definitely helps with the time table. The 124th Reg will rest a couple days, then load up and continue on to new targets. An air support unit is on the way from Formosa to get some aircraft flying. The base fell faster than expected so we will have a couple days of no air cover. 4x B-17's take a run at Fuso but all bombs miss their mark.


Tarakan goes down easier than expected


The Kendari invasion force is in place and will go in tomorrow.

Zeros from Manado sweep Balikpapan and take down 2x B-339D and 5x P-40E's while losing no friendlies.

KB Vals sink a HDML at Merak as the invasion of Java draws closer. Recon is ordered at several bases across Java to help us pick a landing site tomorrow. The extra day at sea will also allow the 38th Division another day to catch up.

Philippines
Lubang is captured via rowboat attack.

More attacks on Clark bag a couple P-40E's in the air and a P-40B on the ground.

Clark shelling continues, and the southern prong captures unoccupied Mauban without a fight.

Pacific
Rabaul invasion sails south, all quiet otherwise.

China
A unit near Hwainan is pushed back again by the 116th Div as the country side is cleared. 21st Division will load up soon, but it will take a couple days to visit Wenchow and assist with capturing that base if possible before shipping on to Singapore.

Submarines
Mini sub success today! SSX-Ha-3 enters the Port Moresby hex and finds the xAK Silkworth and hit the ship with a torpedo. Don't know if she'll sink or not, but at least we got a hit. Ha-3 will be picked up by its carrier and will head home to rearm.

On my list of sub kills, do you think a mini-sub should have it's own entry or should it just count towards the carrier sub? I'm thinking the carrier sub should get the credit since the minisub is more like a weapon type that the big sub uses, rather than a stand alone ship. Any opinions out there?

My vote would be the kill goes to the mother sub. Am following this AAR with interest as it's a peek at the other side of the curtain of a DBB-C game.

We hit some speed bumps in our fast expansion plans today, but no disasters yet.

Malaya
The last of our Singapore assault troops finish unloading at Mersing. With the departure of our transports back to Saigon, the heavy cruiser covering force will move to follow the task force carrying the 38th Division to Java. Tomorrow our ground forces will be in place in Johore Bharu to start the march across the causeway.

DEI
At Kendari, our four Destroyers take some shots at a pair of TM's but fail to score any hits. As our invasion force closes in, the four destroyers spot enemy surface ships closing and do their best to screen the transports. CL Tromp, CL Boise and three DD's press the attack. Our destroyers take a couple minor hits and deal some out as well, starting fires on Boise. Our DD's, being outgunned, eventually disengage. However, the destroyers were successful at buying enough time for the transports to start heading away and the amphib group successfully evades Boise. We will try again on the invasion tomorrow, and if resistance is still heavy we will return to Manado and let the Betty's clear the waters a bit before coming back.


Our brave destroyers slow up Boise just enough.


During the day, one Betty attack near Kendari misses the DD Vampire. Bad weather keeps most of the Betty's from attacking, so Boise likely will slip away to the south.

B-17's attack our transports at Manado and miss.

Our ships continue to close in on Java. Landing sites will be Semarang and Cheribon. Cheribon has pretty big guns, but we have a battleship in the assault group so hopefully it will shut down the two big 180mm guns.

Philippines
Unoccupied Polillo is taken by rear guard troops.

Catalina's attack our ships unloading artillery at Iba but their torpedoes miss. The Cat's return later in the afternoon, but at Takao this time and manage to put a torpedo into the DD Asakaze which safely disbands into port for repairs.

Ann's report hitting a submarine near Formosa.

Weather socks in our air attacks on Clark Field, but the ground forces continue their relentless bombardment.

Pacific
Rabaul invasion force plods along - I don't think it has been spotted yet.

China
Three deliberate attacks today, one of which is successful. Nothing major, just continued clearing of Chinese force.

Our probing unit, the Kyuko Naval Guard unit, at Pucheng is pushed out of the base by a Chinese DA. It will remain outside of the base while we organize forces to take the base in a few weeks.

Submarines
I-18's minisub, Ha-4 hits the AMC Westralia docked at Port Moresby. I-18 herself spots a small group of ships and takes a shot at DD Stronghold, but misses the agile ship. I-18 will pick Ha-4 and head back to Truk to rearm.

Christmas finds some coal in our stocking at Kendari, but overall things continue to move along.

Malaya
Nells from Victoria Point attack some transports at Port Blair. I was a bit surprised to see that, even more surprised that there was a decent CAP of 8x Buffalos. Thankfully we dodge the CAP and hit one small xAKL with a bomb. I have now cut back their range so they don't attack there again unescorted.

DEI
The night starts with SS S-36 firing and missing at our transport group that heads into Kendari. Our destroyers, having refueled at Ambon make a full speed dash to Kendari in case the enemy is still hanging out. The find a pair of TM's first, sinking one. Next up is the DD Vampire and a small xAKL sitting in port. The xAKL is sunk, but the Vampire gets away with only one hit. Our destroyers so far are undamaged.

However, they next encounter the light cruiser Marblehead and five escorting DD's. 42% moonlight, but both sides mostly miss. Our ships take no hits, and only hit the DD Paul Jones once.

Meanwhile, our transport force is set upon by another sub, the Dutch KVIII which manages to hit the DD Amatsukaze - sinking our destroyer straight away. DD Umikaze splits off to find the sub, which will be an issue later.

Later happens after the sun comes up. CL Marblehead finds our invasion force and with Amatsukaze sunk, and Umikaze split off, there are only 2 DD's and 1 PB to defend 13 xAK's. DD Tsuta is out of position and doesn't really take part in the fight which of course makes matters even worse. DD Amagiri fights on bravely though and after a long fight all but two of our transports are headed home to Manado with only minor damage. Those two will likely sink, but will head home on their own - maybe they will act as a speed bump if the Marblehead chases our ships. Amagiri and the PB are not so lucky however and they are sunk. DD Parrott takes a hit and Marblehead takes two. The transports are too beat up to risk another fight so they will return to Manado, unload and reload onto fresh ships for the next try. We have also dispatched BB's Kongo and Haruna and CA's Takao and Atago from Cam Rahn Bay to cover the next attempt. If the Dutch want a fight they will have it.


Our landing is foiled again


We do get some revenge as the day continues though. Having retreated to Lomblen, our Bettys from Ambon find Marblehead and put two torpedoes into the ship. A group of Betty's attacks CL Durban and Dragon at Kendari but they miss their targets. A couple other Betty attacks also miss the mark, several are carrying bombs because I forgot to put enough torpedoes into the Air HQ at Ambon.


A little bit of payback


Near Java, our landing force for Semerang gets chased off by three destroyers. Our surface group was moving with this landing force, but apparently the DD's dodged the Battleships and found the transports. Damage was very minimal but it did cause our landing group to head for home. We will turn them around and send them to Kalidjati instead.

At Cheribon, the BB Hyuga dukes it out with the big guns and comes out on top. Destroying 2 guns and disabling 4 which is all the CD guns present at the base. Hyuga gets hit once by the 180mm guns, but it doesn't penetrate the big ships armor. xAK Azuma Maru also take one 180mm hit, but should be okay. After those guns are disabled, our troops unload in relative good order. Their disruption is high due to being at sea for a bit, so they will recover a day before attacking to take the base. The troops here are the 65th Brigade and a tank regiment.

Out in the water near Java, 7x B-17D's, escorted by 11x B-339D's and 8x CW-21B Demon attack the KB. 41x A6M2's on CAP chew up the escorts, but the B-17's get through and make runs against Soryu. Thankfully all the bombs miss. The KB isn't just on defense today though. They find a TF near Soerabaja and 36x Kates and 29x Vals, escorted by 11x Zeros attack. The enemy has 3x B-339D, 4x Demon and 12x 75A-7 Hawks on CAP. All the bomber make it through, although we lose a Kate and Val in post attack combat. We manage to hit 1 PC, 2 DD, 1 big TK, and 1 CM. Not sure if they will sink or not, but if they park in Soerabaja they better plan on leaving soon. Between the two combats, we bring down 13x B-339D, 5x Hawks and 4x Demons.

The last Java related incident is that the TF carrying the 38th Division is attacked by SS O19, and a transport is hit and sunk. Thankfully I had attached an empty ship which picked up most of the troops from the sinking vessel and only 1 squad is disabled.

Zero's from Manado sweep Balikpapan, but little resistance is found.

Philippines
Today it is Baler that is occupied by our military police forces.

Weather clears and our fighters sweep Clark again while the bombers pound the airfield. 1 P-40B is hit on the ground, but several hits on the airbase are recorded.

Pacific
Rabaul invasion will go in tomorrow! One part of the 66th Nav Gd unit will land at Kavieng, everything else will hit Rabaul tomorrow.

China
We try an attack on Wenchow since the 22nd/A Division had arrived yesterday. We still only get 1 to 3 odds, and will now wait for the 21st Division from Shanghai to stop by on it's way to Singapore.

A couple other attacks occur, one southwest of Kweisui is successful, but another in the pass north of Chengting is only almost successful at 1:1. We will try again tomorrow with air support from Jehol.

Submarines
Near Kangean, the RO-33 finds a small xAKL and fires its last deck gun ammo off and hits the ship once, probably not enough to sink her. It was en route home with no torpedoes and very little gun ammo. Sure would have been nice if it had carried more armament.

In my game against Arnhem she survived a significant number of combat actions, until I finally trapped her in Darwin port.

Surface action subsides for a day, but the action is still hot in the DEI as we push our forces to the limit.

Malaya
The 'free' base capture today occurs near Malaya as Langkawi is occupied.

Our Nates are up in the air to block the Blenheim IVs near Tavoy again. Today they bring down 4 of the enemy bombers and the pilots continue to gain experience - several are now into the 80's.

DEI
At Kendari, CLs Dragon and Durban give a bit of chase, but the two sinking ships we left behind take the brunt of the attack and give the rest of our ships time to get out of range of attack. The two that go down take some troops with them, but not enough to ruin their parent units.

As our invasion forces near Koepang, all the Allied ships from Kendari converge on Timor. Thankfully they are rather spread out and owing to some good weather we get some good hits in. Tomorrow I'm sure our heavy cruisers will have their hands full, but with some of the big names damaged, and hopefully a lot of their ammo spent at Kendari, I think our odds are good that we will at least survive, even if we don't make it to the beaches. CL Boise, CL Perth and CA Canberra all take a torpedo from Bettys as show below.


Key ships taking hits today


At Semarang our heavy cruisers are approached by some TM's but no hits are suffered. B-17's attack during the day and Zero's from KB manage to bring down two of the big planes. No hits are scored on our ships. Our troops successfully unload at Kalidjati.

Betty's bomb the port at Balikpapan and hit an xAP, AS and AG.

Near Tarakan, the 124th Inf Regiment unloads at Tandjoengselor (what a name...). They should capture the base tomorrow, then reload and head for Balikpapan. Fuso is hit with a SAP bomb from a B-17, but no damage is registered.

Muntok is captured by the I./143rd Inf Battalion.

Philippines
Sweeps and bombing of Clark net us two P-40s, one B and one E and one O-47A. Heavy artillery continues to arrive from Iba and our bombardments trade even today.

Pacific
Our landings at Kavieng and Rabaul go well with no interference by Allied forces. The only hiccup is an xAKL hits a mine and will likely sink.

Very busy turn as our heavy cruisers earn their money near Koepang, our troops enter Singapore, Rabaul is captured and our foothold on Java is established. Six bases total are captured today. On to the details...

Malaya
Our troops cross over to Singapore proper today and although we expect heavy casualties it seems we catch some of the defenders napping. Combat report shows a penalty for op mode on defense and the battle is only 1 to 2 odds even with forts level 3 and about an even amount of manpower. Destroyed versus disabled casualties is definitely in our favor as well. With the beachhead established we should be able to bring over the rest of our troops without the shock attack. DEI
The first of many battles near Koepang starts soon after the sun goes down, at 64% moonlight. CA Myoko and Haguro engage CA Canberra, CL Perth and DD Voyager. These ships come down to 2,000 yards for some close in fighting. Canberra (damaged yesterday) takes 2 more torpedoes and two 20cm shell hits and quickly sinks. Perth dodges the torpedoes thrown her way, but can't dodge the guns of the heavy cruisers. Perth takes a total of 19 hits of various calibers and goes down. Voyager take 5 hits and escapes on fire.

DD Paul Jones stumbles into our group and takes a hit before retreating away.

Next, CL Tromp and two DD's show up. One hit on Tromp, two on DD Edsall and one on DD Alden is enough to chase them away.

Then 4 DDs - Barket, Bulmer, Stewart and Parrott - come by. Three hits on Parrott and they turn tail and leave also.

While the heavies were busy fighting off the ships mentioned above, our two invasion forces were attempting to reach the beach. One group made it in, although DD Yukikaze is lost when a mine hit causes a magazine explosion. The other group is unfortunately chased away by the light cruiser Java and a pair of DD's. One PB is sunk while screening the transports.

CAs Myoko and Haguro show up and put the hurt on Java though. DD Evertsen takes a shell hit, and CL Java is hit with two torpedoes and sinks.

A long night isn't over yet. The heavies still need to keep the landing zone clear and the enemy has more ships coming! CL Dragon and Durban come at us next. Dragon is pounded hard with four large calibre hits and one torpedo. Dragon goes down and DD Pillsbury takes one hit as well.

With our ships worn out and low on ammo, CL Durban continues on and manages to get in among our transports causing light damage to six of the ships, and heavy damage to three.

In the end, we manage to land a full Naval Guard unit, a small IJNAF support unit and plenty of supplies. Our transports are somewhat stuck, but we will gamble that the enemy will expect us to retreat north, so we will head south around Timor to try and avoid the enemy ships. Our cruisers and the other loaded TF are partway back to Ambon. CL Nagara has bad engine trouble, and the heavy cruisers, although not damaged at all, are totally out of all ammo. Our transports don't have the cover to try again on Koepang, so they will head to Dili for now while the heavy ships rearm. Our Nav Gd unit might be enough to take Koepang with some help from our naval bombers, but it isn't a sure thing by any means.

Near Java, our escorts do some damage to SS KXVIII at Kalidjati. B-17's attack our ships, but we shoot one down and the rest miss. KB sinks a small xAKL.

Both Kalidjati and Cheribon are easily captured today. Our troops will spread out quickly to grab up the light industry centers so we can get some local supply sources running. 38th Division will land in another couple days and then we will move to capture Soerabaja quickly before the Dutch units can build up replacements.

Near Tarakan we capture Tandjoengselor easily. The 124th will load up again to head to Balikpapan. Over on the other side of Borneo, the III/143rd Battalion captures Ketapang.

Philippines
Another day, another free base capture. Today's bonus is Sibuyan.

Today, our 3rd SNLF force attempts to unload at Subic Bay. Due to an intelligence oversight, our ships are surprised to find some serious firepower comes at them from the coastal guns. One of our ships is sunk and another will likely not make it home. However, our troops do unload in relatively good order and will capture the base tomorrow before marching on to join the siege at Clark.

Sweeps and bombing at Clark get us 4 P-35A and 1 P-40B destroyed and several other planes damaged.

Pacific
Rabaul is captured easily today as our Car Div 2 continues towards Truk to rearm and prepare for the attack on Port Moresby.

China
Nothing major here.

Submarines
Mini sub Ha-7 at PM manages to dodge some DMSs trying to find her.

Near Pamekasan I-159 puts two torpedoes into a large AG (4600 tons) - the Gold Star and sinks the ships.

A much quieter day than yesterday.

Malaya
Sweep of Singapore finds only one Buffalo. This clears the way for lots of Sally to try bombing the troops there. Decent casualties are inflicted by the bombers, but we lose 4 to flak and 4 more to ops damage, so unless our ground troops need help, we'll avoid further bombing on the base.

East of Georgetown, the Imperial Guards and elements of the 55th Division attack enemy troops forcing them to retreat to Georgetown. One unit stays put and we will attack it again tomorrow.

A bombardment at Temuloh by our 56th Inf Reg shows that although the enemy has 7 units there, their combat effectiveness is less that our one unit. Air units will target this base and the 56th Reg will attempt to capture the base without waiting for the 1st Armor Regiment coming through the jungle behind them.

DEI
Zeros sweep Balikpapan, only one B-339D is present and it is shot down.

Our troops successfully unload at Dili and their ships will now head back to Ambon. Our DMS that was damaged yesterday is still try to get home, but flooding is getting worse on the ship so it may well sink. Some Hudson bombers do attack a TB at Dili, but no hits are scored. Most importantly, we guess right and our transports from Koepang slip around to the south while our air search shows that enemy surface ships sat waiting north of the island to catch us.

Philippines
With all our guns now firing at Clark, it seems that the bombardments are leaning in our favor. Enemy casualties include destroyed squads while ours are mostly just disabled.

Our SNLF easily captures Subic Bay, forcing the 1st PI Base Force and the Subic Bay defenses to surrender. This unit will now march on to Clark field to help out there.

Three enemy bases left on Luzon - Bataan, Manilla and Clark.

Pacific
A lone DMS works at clearing mines at Rabaul - 64 are cleared today. Our attack at Kavieng fails today - our adj AV is 4 to the enemy's 5, so this is definitely a battle of small proportions. A few elements of the 2nd SNLF enroute from Kwajelein will stop by here and lend a hand. They are only 4 squads of combat troops, but at these quantities of combatants, that will make some difference I'm sure.

The 51st Nav Gd unit splits into three parts - one third stays at Tarawa, another third goes to Ocean and another third goes to Naura. They both hit the beaches today and easily defeat the Wren and Heron garrison units at the two islands. They will load up and head farther south to Tabbi.

At Port Moresby, our Zeros from Rabaul sweep the base and there are no fighters present. Tomorrow we will send some Nells.

China
Today's free base comes in China - Kwangchowan is occupied.

Submarines
South of Port Moresby, I-170 finds the damaged AMC Westralia (hit by mini-sub at PM a few days ago) and hits the ship with a torpedo. The big ship is reported sunk.

Malaya
Batu Pahat is snagged by the ghost soldiers today.

Nells and Oscars take a trip to Port Blair destroying a Buffalo in the air, and hitting AG Ban Hong Liong with a bomb.

At Temuloh our attack only gets 1:1 but does manage to drop forts to zero. We will continue our air assault on the base and attack again tomorrow.

At Tavoy, the 14th Tank Regiment forces the retreat of three enemy units and captures the base. An AF Support unit is a few days from walking into the base. The Tank reg will head south to clear the road and capture the base between Tavoy and Victoria Point.

The RAF Adv Base Force left behind east of Georgetown yesterday is destroyed and our troops will now move on to Georgetown.

DEI
Overnight, we chase away SS KXVIII from Kalidjati. But the next day the sub comes back and our DD's manage to score 6 'hits' two of which are penetrating. It is unclear if the sub sunk or not.

Our retreating transports from Timor are missed by S-41. But S-41 later manages to hit PB Kure Maru #5 sinking the small escort ship. The Koepang attack goes well at 2:1, but the level 1 fort is enough to keep the base from falling. Forts go to zero so hopefully we can capture the base tomorrow. Dili is also captured and our troops will march east next.

At Kendari, two of our destroyers arrive to take up patrol off shore to make sure we know if there are any threats to our next landing. TM-12 makes an attack but can't close the range in the daylight so the small ship leaves.

Sallys from Borneo hit the port at Batavia and put a bomb on xAK Manoeran.

Also, CL Marblehead is confirmed sunk today.

Philippines
Near Formosa an Ann reports a hit on an Allied sub.

Sweeps and bombings destroy a couple more planes at Clark.

Pacific
51 mines cleared at Rabaul today.

SS Thresher misses our transport that is reloading troops at Ocean Island.

Nells, escorted by Zeros hit Port Moresby today and manage to put a torpedo into DMS Long, sinking the ship.

China
Our troops capture Tsiaotso today and bag 297 squads of enemy casualties. Our troops here will head in a couple different directions to keep our enemy guessing.

Submarines
I-168 misses the xAP Rangitiki south of PM, and I-7 misses CL Leander about 200 miles south of I-168. Lots of ships retreating south from PM.

Continuing the success of our mini-subs, Ha-7 hits the xAK Missourian at Port Moreby today, sinking the transport. Only one mini is left at Port Moresby that hasn't fired its torpedoes yet.

Some minor disappointments today, but we dodge a close call at Rabaul.

Malaya
Today's bombardment at Singapore ends up with no casualties for us - only the enemy. I expect the rest of our troops to arrive tomorrow so we should be ready to begin direct assaults on January 1. The combat report is currently showing 2000 AV for us and 333 for the enemy, but we have another 600 or so AV that should arrive tomorrow.

The attack at Temuloh fails despite heavy air attacks. 1:1 odds mean we can continue to press the attack.

DEI
Our Destroyers on station at Kendari find a mine. More importantly, TM-12 comes back for more but this time a quick hit from a destroyer shell ends the small ships career. Our troops at Manado are enroute to Kendari and it all seems safe so far. Just in case though - they have a couple battleships coming along too.

Bettys from Manado bomb enemy troops at Koepang to help out there. We lose 1 Betty to the B-339D on CAP at the base. The ground attack is a slight disappointment achieving only 1:1 odds. Casualties are heavily in our favor though around 1:5.5 odds. Tomorrow our Bettys at Ambon will be put on secondary ground attack, so if they fly, and they aren't busy attacking ships, they should help out a bit.

Our DMS heading back from Koepang succumbs to flooding and sinks today.

Sallys hit Batavia again, this time they hit an AG and a xAKL.

At Java, B-17's bomb our tanks heading towards Soerabaja and destroy 5 tanks. 12 more tanks are disabled. At Bandoeng we try our first attack and only get 1:2 odds. We will rest a day or two and try again, perhaps with some Nells on ground attack to help out.

Philippines
Buria is our free capture today. Anns at Formose hit another sub today.

Bombardments at Clark continue to do well, destroying a few squad a day along with some vehicles as well. We launch our first attack on Manilla today and get 1:1 odds against level 2 forts. The forts drop to 1. The 16th Recon arrive there today as well so the 16th Division is reformed and will continue the attack tomorrow.

Pacific
14 mines cleared at Rabaul and that appears to be the last of them.

Our Zeros and Nells visit Port Moresby again, but this time there are P-40E's waiting. We lose one Zero and our Nells miss both of the DMS's they make runs on.

The big news of the day is at Rabaul. Detecting our lack of CAP and seeing lots of ships offshore, the enemy bravely sends a carrier group close enough to attack. 8 Wildcats and 30 Dauntlesses attack. Two of our cargo ships are hit with 1000lb bombs and both sink. BB Mutsu also takes a bomb but it does no damage thanks to the heavy ships armor. While two transports is worth something, this isn't a terrible outcome. Most of the dive bombers attacked our BBs and several took flak damage. I'm not sure if they will press on the attack again tomorrow, but of course with the Warhawks at PM there is no reason for us to fly offensive at the moment. So we will put our 6(9) Zeros on CAP, and we transferred in 30 Oscars from Kwajelein to bolster the CAP as well. Additionally, our Car Div 2 centered around Akagi and Kaga is within range of Rabaul and will put up a few Zeros too.


Enemy carrier attack at Rabaul


Looking at the map below, there is another carrier group farther south that one of our Glen subs discovered this turn. Not counting Hermes, there could only be three carriers in the area at most so I think our 2 CV, 2 CVL and 2 CVE force, along with some help from Rabaul would be enough to manage in a carrier vs carrier fight. This does mean we will not load for PM as we had planned to do today. I suspect the enemy will head south now that the element of surprise is lost, but you never know. It is nice to know that the US CVs are here. I had been worried they might attack near Timor since I am low on air cover there. I can now proceed with a bit more confidence in that area.

No big news here. Pushed a couple rogue Chinese units closer to Nanyang.

Submarines
On the 'sub run' south of Port Moresby (see pic above), RO-64 hits and sinks xAKL Hetton Bank. RO-68 spots an xAKL but declines to attack.

At Port Moresby proper, our last mini sub doesn't disappoint. Ha-6 puts a torpedo into xAK Skagerak.

Status: offline 		January 1 in game means a major review of production and such so I was a bit behind. Here's the latest combat update - I will also try to get some stats up related to the first month (well, three weeks) of the war.

December 31th, 1941
A nice turn to end the year with.

Malaya
Several ships are spotted heading up the channel today. Mabels and IJA dive bombers attack the enemy ships. The Army DBs miss everything, but the Mabels do very well sinking two xAKs, one AMc and the best one - hitting and sinking DD Vendetta. Quite a good show for 9 little Mabels with 50ish XP pilots.

All our troops are now in place at Singapore so a full attack will be launched tomorrow on New Year's Day.

DEI
BB Nagato and Ise, cruising towards Balikpapan stumble onto xAKL Kanlaon II in the channel. A couple big shells and the small ship is obliterated. Three of our destroyers cruised by Balikpan and sunk a pair of MTBs. There are still two more there. Next turn our transports will go in while our DD's and BB's stand off shore to intercept any ships that attempt to interfere. Zero's sweep the place as well and bring down 1 more B-339.

On Java, Zero's sweep Batavia and drop a B-339.

At Keopang we do yet another Zero sweep and - yes you guessed it - 1 B-339 goes down. Many of our Bettys from Manado and Ambon do ground attacks on Koepang as well and the support definitely helps the fight on the ground as our troops manage to capture the base at 13:1 odds. This is great news, since it helps us keep on schedule. Next stop for the 16th Nav Guard is Denpasar.

One of our Air HQ units is partially sunk today by SS KXV while en route to Manado. I've alter course to be a bit less direct so hopefully we can dodge the sub and get the last bit there intact. I've also sent a 'lifeboat' ship from Manado to meet up and join the TF.

Philippines
Camiguin is occupied today.

An AG enroute to San Fernado is missed by SS S-39.

In conjunction with our ground assault, several ground to air attacks and sweeps are launch on Manila. The ground attack goes well, getting 3:1 against level 1 forts. That is enough to capture the base and 16,000 enemy troops are killed, wounded or captured. Now the 16th Division will move on to Clark, less a third to garrison Manila until a Special Base Force can arrive.

Pacific
We have a report that SS Pike was sunk near Eniwetok back on December 23rd. Hopefully that is true.

SS Stugeon misses DD Okikaze at Kavieng. Also, our troops on Kavieng take control of the base sending the enemy troops fleeing to the southeast.

Our troops will start loading up for Port Moresby tomorrow. Our carriers are a couple hexes away from Rabaul in order to provide cover. I expect the fleet will sail in another day or two unless of course we see enemy carriers again.

China
21st Division finished unloading at Wenchow and will launch an attack there tomorrow to see how we do.

An attack northwest of Tsiaotso, on the trail to Sian, gets 1:1 today. Another division is on the way so we might wait until it arrives to try again.

Submarines
Lots of action on the Port Moresby to Australia sub run today.

I-174 decides not to shoot at an AM, but then the AM manages to do some damage to I-174. Unclear if the sub will make it home, probably 50/50 shot.

Brave little Ha-6 is also found by an AM, and it takes some damage which is enough to convince the crew to abandon and swim for it.

I-171 has better luck and puts a torpedo into xAP Malaita which turns out to be loaded. I'm not sure if it is coming or going to Port Moresby - but if it is going there it has more subs to dodge since I-171 is on the south end of the sub gauntlet.

I-7 spends all its gun ammo on xAKL Burwah sinking the ship.

Wow! What a way to start the New Year. Read on, fans of the Empire!

Malaya/Indochina
Zero's sweep Port Blair and bring down 4 Buffalos.

Nells and Bettys attack some of the ships fleeing Singapore. Two AGs and one xAK are all hit with one bomb each. An xAKL and DD Vendetta are all finished off with torpedoes. The Mabels fair worse today, scoring no hits.

Georgetown is easily captured by our northern force. They will continue on their march down the peninsula.

Our first serious assault on Singapore goes well. Details are below. The destroyed versus damage counts look good and we definitely have a solid numerical edge. Our disruption is a bit high after the assault so we will rest a day before trying again on the 3rd of Jan.

The 124th Infantry from Tarakan fame, storms ashore at Samarinda today with little problem. One xAK is hit by the 75mm CD guns and will likely sink by tomorrow.

Our troops are closing on Kendari and today escorts chase SS S-36 away from BB Haruna and company.

At Java, the Dutch air force, detecting that KB has left the area rallies up a big strike of 34x 139WH-3 and the last 2x Swordfish. We are counting on the low experience of the enemy pilots to protect us and that pays off today. All bombs and torpedoes miss our transports that are just finished unloading at Kalidjati. The transports will head back north, and will be LRCAPed for tomorrow by Zeros and Oscars from Singkawang. We also spot an enemy ship fleeing south from Singapore, and two of our destroyers will sail to intercept the ship.

Meanwhile, on the island itself, the 2nd Tank Regiment captures Semarang from the Base Force there.

Philippines
Calayan is captured for free today. The rate of these captures is definitely helping me out in terms of cleanup later on.

Sweeps and bombing on Clark continue, we hit 1x P-40E, 1x P-40B and 1x P-35A today. We are definitely in seige mode now that Manilla has fallen. I probably won't report much here unless something noteworthy comes up.

Pacific
First, near Peleliu, a small tanker of ours gets sunk by SS Tarpon.

The big action is near Rabaul today! Overnight our escorts chase off SS Sturgeon from our carriers as they arrive east of Rabaul to provide cover for our newly loaded up transports. US carriers attacked here just a couple days ago and now our troops are all loaded up and vulnerable so we don't want to see that happen again.

Shortly after the sun comes up, our search planes see enemy carrier south of Rabaul near Woodlark. Kaga acts against orders and moves south another hex, thus splitting our carrier force - Kaga in one hex and Akagi in the other (each with one CVL and CVE each). Akagi's strike reaches the target first and is shredded pretty good. Of the strike seen below, only 6 Vals and 3 Kates make attacks on Saratoga and all miss.

All is not lost however, as the seperate attacks split up the enemy CAP and the strike from Kaga is barely interfered with. Vals hit the mark on Saratoga five time, 3 of which penetrate the flight deck. Kates put three fish into the big carrier as well, the last of which sets off an ammo storage explosion. Sara ain't looking too good. To add insult to injury, some Jakes from our CS's attack also, and put a 60kg bomb on the deck too.

Next up comes the counterattack. Kaga in her rush to get closer takes the brunt of the attack. 18 Claudes and 19 Zeros do their best, but totally miss the 30 SBD-3s that come in. Hosho, Ryujo and Kaga all take 2 bombs each. Kaga is still able to operate, but Hosho and Ryujo's planes divert to Rabaul - most of them do safely land there.

Both sides recover and rearm and in the afternoon the action continues. This time Akagi faces a reduced CAP with Sara out of action, and 17 B5N2's make a run on Enterprise. Three torps plow into the side of the carrier and detonate, although no major fires or secondary explostions are reported.

Enterprise's counterattack comes in without escort and our Clauses and Zeros have a field day with 13 SBD-2s. All 13 are splashed easily. Even the Claudes bring down a couple.

Saratoga is reported sunk on the intel screen. Definitely cause for celibration. Kaga is still able to operate sorties, so it will rendezvous with the Akagi group while Ryujo and Hosho park at Rabaul to reduce flooding before heading north for repairs. Given FOW it is possible that Enterprise is not that damaged. If so, Enterprise and Lexington (I assume Lex is here) together could still mount a solid attack against our carriers. Because of this, our carriers will rendezvous near Rabaul to get some local land based CAP support. Also, our troops ships will wait another day to sail. If the US CV's retreat, we will sail tomorrow. Nells have been order to search far south and attack if possible. Various submarines have been order into the area as well.

It is still tense, but if Sara and Enterprise have been rendered ineffective, then things are looking very good at the moment. Stay tuned to see what happens tomorrow!


Battle of the Solomon Sea


China
Supplies continue to unload at Wenchow as our ground troop try their assault today with the newly arrived 21st Division. No luck though, as they only achieve 1 to 2 odds. 17th Division is en route - once it arrives we will try again.

Air support arrives in Nanyang today, so we move in some Nate who will try to ambush some SB-III's that keep pestering our Divisions near Wuchang.


Submarines
More sub activity today. SS-171 on the Port Moresby death run finds xAKL Kini and sinks the ship with two torpedo hits.

Farther west, near Tandjoengbalai, xAKL Larut falls victim to I-156 which pounds the ship under with its deck gun.

Status: offline 		Something I forgot to mention is that there were still Buffaloes in the US carrier CAP and strikes. This is definitely a first for me to see Buffaloes and Claudes fighting it out in a CV on CV battle.

Sara is hurt bad.  Not sure that's enough to sink her though ...

Big E is also hurt ... prolly 40 - 60 float damage. 

What were the allied plane losses?  Any ground or high ops losses?

See no evidence that the Lex is there ...

I'd gamble here with the Akagi and whatever unhurt CVL/CVE's you have and move in.  Sara might only move 4 hexes and Big E might only move 6 -8 with neither able to launch  .. its worth a day travel SSE to see.  I'd plot for SE of Shortlands (8-9 hexes).  Keep high CAP, you won't need much escort going in.  Shift a Val or Kate group from one of your hurt CV's if you can to Akagi to be sure she is full.  Killing either or both would be VERY nice.

Status: offline 		I actually played it more cautiously. While I would love to kill carriers, my goal in the area is to capture PM. With my troops all loaded I just couldn't take the risk of Lex getting a strike in and ruining my invasion forces. I am shuffling around my air groups as you mentioned though. On Jan 3 we will be heading south with the troops (and extra fighters on the carriers), so if Enterprise or Sara are crippled and moving slow we'll catch up to them.

Nells from Rabaul are out hunting as well, although they don't have torps yet due to level 3 airfield size. And lets not forget the submarines!

I'll have the update for January 2 up tomorrow hopefully.

Status: offline 		Oh, and no, I didn't see any major ops/ground losses either. There were a half dozen SBD ops losses, and 17 or so down from A2A. However, if Lex was around it is is possible a fair amount of aircraft diverted to Lex. Or maybe even PM? I haven't checked to see if it would be in range.

Malaya/Indochina
Free base capture today is Bengkalis. This is a good one to get since it has resources and it is one I usually detail a force to land at pretty early on.

No CAP over Port Blair now, and we have an anchor symbol so we will try a port attack next turn.

We launch several IJA bomber attacks on Singapore. Flak damage is not insignificant but it is hopes the attacks will keep forts down to level 2. Our bombers will try ground attack tomorrow in conjunction with another ground assault on the city.

DEI
The xAK damaged yesterday at Samarinda sinks, not a major shock - at least it was empty. Samarinda itself goes down with little struggle at 13 to 1 odds. The 124th Regiment will now march onward to Balikpapan. We do have a close call as a Dutch sub misses BB Ise. Our ships can all retreat back to Tarakan now that the land forces have secured Samarinda.

Our invasion force lands at Kendari without major incident. We expect the base to fall tomorrow and then these troops will load up for Makassar.

Near Toboali, the two DDs sent to intercept an enemy ship are successful as they find CM Kung Wo and hit the ship 22 times. It is not watched to check for sinking, but the ship was heavily damaged and burning fiercely when our destroyers left the scene.

At Billiton, the last 2 Swordfish attack our transports that had left from Kalidjati yesterday. Our CAP of Zeros and Oscar make easy work of the Swordfish and their escorting B-339Ds.

Philippines
Bombardments continue at Clark, inflicting approx 4:1 casaulties in our favor.

Pacific
Three Nells make an attack run on what seems to be Saratoga sitting in the same hex it was located in yesterday. No hits are scored, but these flyers seem to report that the ship will sink since it is still listed on our sunk ship list.

CV situation: Enterprise and Saratoga are both on the sunk list (Sara for the 2nd time). Enterprise is reported having sunk a few hexes south of where it was hit yesterday (see map below). The main CV group appears to be making for Australia. I have several subs just off the southern edge of this map that will attempt to intercept. If Saratoga is still afloat in the same hex it was, CV Div 2 will be in range tomorrow and should easily sink the ship. It would be nice if Enterprise went down. I'm not sure how the false reports work, but it would seem like one that comes later after battle would be more accurate? Who know though.

I have loaded up some extra Zero units on the carriers since their plane counts are low and we don't have time to dock and restock airframes. This is a brief window where we can get to PM without enemy CV interference so we need to take it. Our troops, carriers and battleship coverage all sail tomorrow!


Situation in the Solomon Sea


China
Near Hankow/Wuchang, our Nates attacks 3 SB-III's and bring them all down. We won't try that tomorrow as recon shows enemy fighters based nearby so one good sweep could see our Nates get beat up good.

Our army heading for Sian pushes the Chinese back another hex closer to their goal.

Submarines
No major contacts today.

Status: offline 		FOW will often have any ship hit with a torpedo show up on the sunk list, regardless of size. I usually count either explosion, ammo or fuel, as worth two torpedoes. The American CVs will need 4 or 5 torpedo hits to sink. Saratoga is probably going to sink, if she hasn't already as you have so many subs in this area. I haven't seen this many so early in the war.

Look for your "C" Class subs to go back to port and place some more midget subs on them. Have them meet one or two Glen I-boats off Brisbane, or more likely Sydney. If you spot an increase of ships, have them get close to launch. Another torpedo hit might be enough.

Status: offline 		Interestingly enough I had already sent a couple C class towards Brisbane after they were done at PM. Another pair is heading for Noumea. Both have bases have been getting reconned by Glens for a few days now.

I have the majority of my subs in this theater since I place a lot of importance on the capture of PM. Having not captured it in my team game it has made a big difference in the Allied position as of late 42. Rabaul is very vulnerable when PM is in Allied hands.

4 - Enterprise attacked by one of our subs... but we miss. Enterprise en route to Bribane for sure.

Malaya/Indochina
Our Nells hit and sink an AMc at Port Blair. We'll put the Nells on naval attack now, but reign them in short of Rangoon so they don't get pulled into a CAP trap.

We lose several IJA bombers again today as we make a final push on Singapore with all bombers in the area on ground attack. The losses are worth it though as today's attack succeeds in convincing the British to surrender. 28,000 enemy troops are bagged and the gateway to the Indian Ocean is ours!

DEI
Today's free base is near Borneo today - Serasan (near Singkawang) is added to the Empire for no cost today.

At Kendari, three AMc's and A DMS clear out lots of mines (62 to be specific) while on the land our troops easily kick the defenders out of the base (12:1).

Philippines
South of Formosa, even though have SCs crawling all over the place, SS Permit manages to find one of our AKEs en route to points west and after several gun shots and lots of torpedoes (one of which actually detonates) the AKE is heavily damaged, but will try to duck into Takao. Shark takes a shot at the AKE as well, but misses with its two torpedoes.

We have a report of an enemy PG hitting a mine at Manila.

We try an attack on Clark today to get a sense of how stiff the defenses are and they are still strong. We only get 1:5 odds so we will continue bombarding for a while yet.

Pacific
In the night, submarine I-5 gets a positive sighting of Enterprise and fires four fish. All of them miss unfortunately, but at least it is pretty clear that 'E' is making for Brisbane and then presumably Sydney. Several submarines are being routed to the expected path of the carrier to see if we manage some lucky shots.


So close...


South of Rabaul, Nells find Saratoga again and manage to toss a 60kg bomb on the already burning deck. Later in the morning Car Div 2 sends a strike and four 250kg bomb hits, and two torpedoes later the ship is confirmed sunk. We also manage to put two bombs into DD Le Triomphant, which heavily damages the ship. I-1 comes by and finishes off the destroyer later in the day.


Saratoga is finished off


In all the excitement to find those carriers, our Nells are set to long range and thus they end up flying an afternoon mission to Port Moresby where we lose a half a dozen Nells to the Warhawks and Wildcats there. VF-6 markings are spotted so we know where Sara's fighter wing went.

China
A couple successful land attacks sees the IJA continuing to herd the Chinese in directions we want them to go.

Submarines
RO-33 wanders too close to Singapore and hits three mines, sinking. I'm not sure exactly why the sub went there, but at least it was a small boat.

As mentioned above, I-1 gets and assist as it delivers the coup de grace to DD Le Triomphant.

Status: offline 		The war is off to a good start! We managed to capture 71 bases in total during the first 3 weeks of the war. More importantly, Ambon and Koepang have been captured early allowing us to render the southern end of the DEI a non-friendly Allied area before the New Year even started. Likewise, the early grab of Singkawang and Billiton have allowed us to keep an eye on most everything moving around Java, Sumatra and Borneo. KB was around for most these activities after bombing Manilla on day 1 while heading to the DEI.

The invasion of Malaya couldn't have gone much better with Force Z being taken out early and our troops rolling into Mersing just a hop skip and jump away from the prize of Singapore. The enemy air threats in the DEI were neutralized pretty early on with the KB taking down the enemy Vildbeests and Stringbags early on. Dutch bombers are a much lower threat and will be dealt with in time.

We have a foothold on Java and have been working our way across the island even before Singapore has been attacked. The 38th Division will certainly help in this regard. It has arrived at Java towards the end of the month after capturing the important port of Hong Kong.

Speaking of China, there is not much to say here. Things look promising but most of our advances are still coalescing, and a lot of cleanup and garrison organizing still needs to happen. We will have more time to explain this theater when things settle down in the DEI.

In the Philippines we went with a light approach, although still sending a lot of engineers to key bases. This seems to be working as we have the enemy contained at Clark and Bataan. Lots of artillery units are shelling Clark Field daily and we will plan to continue this until we have some extra LCUs that can come and wrap things up. Manilla was captured, and we may send some small units around to pick up the various islands in the area.

In the Pacific we manage to take Wake as planned, but run into problems in the Gilberts. We do eventually take our goal islands in that area, but not until after losing two LCUs at sea. While they will soon be rebuilt in Tokyo, their loss does mean a slower expansion in the SE Pac area initially.

In the SW Pac, our invasion of Rabaul goes well. We dodge a bullet when the US CVs continue their harassment after leaving the Gilberts and catch us with no CAP at Rabaul and lots of ships in the harbor. Thankfully the transports were unloaded. In response we moved our Car Div 2 (Akaki, Kaga and 2 CVL and 2 CVE) into the area. This resulted in a CV battle on Jan 1 which you can read about above. So far so good there.

January major goals are to secure PM and the islands of the Solomon Sea. Secure rest of the DEI bases of AF 3 or higher. Secure Port Blair. Assemble fleet for Ceylon late January for early Feb landings.
