I am playing against the AI. The USS California (BB-44) took three (3) torpedoes about 14 hexes north east of Roi-Namur. By the start of the next turn her damage was 40/95/32 with a possible speed of one (1) knot. After two days her possible speed went to ZERO when set to cruise. (actual major damage was 0/68/18). She sat mid ocean just out of range/detection of the Japanese for eight (8) days not moving. Each day her damage either went up a tad or down a tad with down a tad being the bulk of the time. At the end of 10 days after being hit she got back up to one (1) knot cruise speed. Over the course of the next 18 days she slowly limped to Johnston Atoll where she is docked under going peir repairs before a run into Pearl. By the time she made Johnston Atoll she was at 52/89/35 damage.

Doesn't have much to do with anything, just kind of an interesting story to share before you hit that scuttle button.

Oh , it's sinkable. Nice work, you must be living right Califvol... That's one of the things that makes this game so great , the variablity built into it among other things.

I just had a sub go down after nursing her all the way back from the Sea of Japan to Kodiak. She was about a day or two out and floundered. It just broke my heart. Amazing how the fate of one minor ship can seize your attention. I took it hard....

I have had it go the other way too. One measly torpedo into the Enterprise with about 20 floatation damage and it didn't even last three more turns. I hope the damage control officer went down with the ship.

Oh trust me she can sink. Try this one: she was damged at PH, repped up to seaworthy status, was escorted to Bremerton to be repaired, and then........

was hit by a single torpedo from a midget sub attack, suffered a magazine explosion and sank while in drydock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shame the game engine does not allow towing or the use of salvage ships....

Yes, indeed. I had the Saratoga do exactly the same thing on like turn 2 of the game. I have had multiple BB's sink with just one Torp. That's why this whole thing this time around was just rather amazing.

It does.

Ships generally move 1 hex per turn, even if their speed is 0. This simulates towing.

ARD's are in the game. ARD's and to a lesser extent, AR's make good forward repair/salvage ships. I've had na APA sitting in a size 3 port with an ARD for 60ish days reparing float damage from an invasion. The ship started around 94 float and the ARD got it down to less than 50 and I sent it to Pearl. That ship was out of action for at least 4 months, but she survived.

All ships can move-even when out of fuel or with no movement rating listing. I think it is one hex per day. The devs have said many times that this is suppose to reflect that the ship is being towed. So it is there but abstracted.

While it is not AE, in my current Vanilla WiTP PBEM, my opponent managed to put 4 torpedoes into Fuso just east of Palembang (I hadn't captured Singapore yet, but its AF was out of commission). A game year later, Fuso is fully repaired and back in service...flooding started at 85, but I managed to limp here to Kuching and island hop back to Okoyama after repairing the flooding damage.

All in all it was a very tenuous few days hoping Fuso wouldn't sink before I got her back to a size 3 port and waiting for an AR to arrive there as well.

In WITP, if Japanese CV got 40 flt damage, you could be sure, than in 3 days it will be in 60-70s.
But I think, on Allied side, everything is able to save, no matter the damage.

Anyway, are you ABSOLUTELY sure, ship did not move, with 0 speed? I thought they will always move at least 1 hex.

Yes, I tracked the movement on good old paper each turn to make sure. I assumed because it was set to cruise speed instead of mission speed and that cruise speed was listed as zero is why it didn't move. I wasn't willing to put it on mission speed as I knew the second I did that it would sink. But, yup it sat there immobile for several days as stated.
