Size 1 islands are not even a speed bump for Japan. Plenty of those available for the taking, and in doing so most Allied positions in the south Pacific are easily outflanked.

Size 1 islands are useless to both players, aside from FPs. Japan can take them, supply them and garrison them if he likes. But to what end?
The important ones, Canton, Xmas, Jhonston, Suva, Noumea can be sufficiently garrisoned in a 2-3 months, IMHO.
I however have only experience in scenario 1. However an amphibious landing on an atoll would be pretty much the same as you have troops limitations, wouldn't it?

1. Properly structured, the invasion force can far exceed the island stacking limit. At worst, the attacker has only a temporary problem, the defender has a permanent problem.

2. The size of an island is not a good indicator of the value of owning that island.

It's true that single islands can hardly hope to stand up to a full KB strike, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve any fighters. Even a limited number can disrupt strikes, lowering losses. An undefended islands can also be raided by mini-KB or detached carriers, protecting them means that he'll need a lot more assets to raid properly.

First some bad and good news, USS John D. Edwards sinks from damage received at the minor naval battle around Mindanao. HMAS Stuart did make it to safety at Lord Howe Island, but is facing a years worth of repairs at the small port.

SWPac
KB retires after the raid and vanishes somewhere in the Coral Sea. A Japanese sub picks off K VIII just outside of Sydney, ending a painful week of the Australian coast.

At Port Moresby the Japanese attack takes the base, not really a surprise as a whole division landed at the base.

DEI
Very silent, large concentrations of ships are at Palembang and some other shipping occasionally pops up at other Japanese held bases, but so far no new invasions.

Malaya
No ground offensive yet, the RAF rose to meet the Japanese bombing raids once and achieved relatively good results considering they're flying Buffaloes. Once all planes are repaired the RAF might go up once more.

Malaya
Singapore has faced one attack so far on the 23rd. Japanese losses were high, but forts were brought back to 2. I'm expecting a new attack soon as Japanese forces probably have rested since the previous attempt. All air has been evacuated out.

Burma
Headlong retreat continues, Mandalay fell on the 30th. The Commonwealth troops are still relatively intact and keeping one step ahead of the Japanese.

China
Battles around Sian, a force in the woods easily held of a Japanese stack of 3000 AV. More problems are around the North, where a 2 division stack routed 600 AV coming from Yenan. This is a route along which the Japanese could bring in more forces, bypassing the woods.

SWPac
Horn Island and Shortlands are taken.

DEI
HMS Royal Sovereign will get a very short career in the DEI. I-160 hits her with 2 torpedoes going. Damage is heavy but not enough to sink her. However, her speed is reduced to only 3 knots. She's going to Soerabaja for emergency repairs, hopefully this'll restore some speed and get her in a condition to survive the cruise towards Australia before the Japanese come calling. (Any day now, it's been over 2 weeks since KB disappeared from the Australian coasts and we all know where it's heading)

The offending sub is reported sunk by a later ASW-attack from RN DDs

Subs
Seawolf hits a medium xAP, no confirmed kill,
Plunger shoots up another small 160 tons xAKL
Couple of dud attacks
I-26 is damaged by DC near the Western seaboard.

Malaya
Singapore forts fell to 0 on the 31st and a further attack was held on the 5th. Allied forces in Singapore are hurting badly, I don't think I'll be able to hold any more shock attacks.

Burma
The Japanese army stopped its pursuit in Burma, Allied troops are nearly in the jungle and will start the long trek North to India. Most of the Allied forces got out OK, only a couple of base forces were beat up and they don't take up any scarce devices so they'll rebuild easily.

Paras take Port Blair

DEI
A long range strike was launched on the port at Soerabaja. I didn't even know the Japanese could even reach there. Royal Sovereign took most of the bombs and shrugged them off, but a couple of British & Dutch CL were slightly damaged as well. I'm going trough my turns too quickly in this game and it's costing me in raids like this. Just because I could leave those ships safely in this port a couple of weeks ago doesn't me I can do it now, and not taking the time to reassess such things will result in more ships getting sunk. After this the port was emptied out, Royal Sovereign will try to make Australia even though she can only make 4 knots, some cruisers will go that way as well. The ships still ready for combat are going to other, less conspicuous bases.

Singapore fell on the 10th, could have held longer if I hadn't forgotten to start building forts right from the start.

DEI
Royal Sovereign took an extra 2 torps while trying to get out of Soerabaja and is sunk. HMS Dragon is also hit by a torp but damage is mild.

A KB raid is launched and strikes Soerabaja. Most important ships have already left, a couple of the auxiliary minelayers and ARD are hit. Part of KB splits up and goes South after fleeing cruisers. CL Mauritius is caught and sunk over 2 days of attacks. One of it's escorting destroyers, Vendetta, is sunk as well. No invasion fleets spotted in the wake of KB.

Has it really been this long since I updated the AAR ? It seems like everyone can follow the game closely in the other AAR anyway, so this is going to be limited to main points an my thoughts on them.

China
Japanese forces are chasing some Chinese towards Changsha. Nothing of strategic importance, just the basic routing of Chinese forces early in the war.

DEI
A cruiser TF led by Houston returns to Java after the KB raid an immediately runs into 2 CA + escorts at Tjiltjap, the battle is indecisive. One American DD is hit twice and suffers light damage. Japanese carriers once again sortie in the Java Sea, but find nothing to hit.

Pac
Invasion of Naura island, Christmas Island and Pago Pago are both reinforced by a division and 2 regiments respectively.

USS Yorktown
After covering the reinforcement convoys the carriers retire to Sydney for refuelling. USS Yorktown gets sunk by a sub just outside the port. Not much else to say about this, bad luck, the TFs were well-escorted, planes were patrolling from Sydney and ASW groups were operating out of the port.

More than a month between updates ? Well, this AAR isn't really getting the attention it deserves.

Main points for the Allies this month
- A cease-fire has come in effect in China. Turns out we both hate the theatre. We've both agreed not to overdo troop movements out of the area.

- A raid at Makassar was a disaster, with the moon at 0% I thought I could risk an attack with some light cruisers on the invasion fleet. Instead they ran into the covering force consisting of a number of CA an decent DD. In the battle itself the RN cruisers got hit badly in return for a DD. During the retreat it then turned out part of KB had placed itself on the route back to Perth. Final results were 4 Clemsons and 2 old RN Cruisers sunk for one modern IJN DD.

- Allied air force in the DEI was useless. So far there is one hit on a Japanese xAK.

- Small incursions into India. Akyab and Cox's Bazaar taken. Troops are moving to defend Chittagong. One Australian ID + 18th British ID was diverted to India, so I should have some good troops to counter a limited attack, right now it's just 7th Armoured and one Indian Bde moving to Chittagong though, I don't think there is much moving up the coast yet.

- Slow Japanese advance in the Pacific (furthest advance Tabiteaeu) and Solomons (Ndeni).

- Christmas and Pago Pago both have good defensive forces (About an ID). Noumea is getting the Americal regiments arriving in Oz, Suva will follow later with one more American ID.

Doing 2 AARs properly has become too time consuming since I started work (you don't know just how much time you've got as a student until you stop having it.) and a new basketball seasons taking up a lot of my spare time. My other PBEM is on hold at the moment though so a quick flyby of the past month or so was in order. I'll try to get short updates in after important battles, but otherwise this AAR is going to be very quiet.

Not much important happened during the last month or so, mostly a clean up of the DEI.

HMS Glaswgow escorted by a USN Destroyer did a short raid on shipping near Horn Island (half a dozen merchants damaged, but no sinkings reported) and narrowly escaped carriers coming down to Darwin. 1 Dutch destroyer wasn't so lucky, she got hit by a bomb and ran into a cruiser group the next night.

Last couple of days were bad for the long range merchant fleet of the Allies. A group of carriers (mini-KBish) is roaming between Oz and Cape Town and hit that shipping lane just as 2 xAK groups were crossing each other (one Oz-bound, the other returning to Cape Town). They got massacred on 2 consecutive days. Today I got punished for a lack of attention, another xAK group just got out of the wormhole and was slaughtered in turn, I should have turned them around but didn't. In total it cost me 21 merchants, worth 12 VP a piece and measuring over 6000 tons....
