Gentlemen,
Here’s the continuation of yesterday’s report – next on the list is the battle in Burma, where a weak Chinese division tries to take Lashio. So far, I have mainly been able to reduce the forts, same story this turn – especially as the assigned ground support missions did not fly.
These are the results (bear in mind that about 50% of the raw AV is in the division that did not attack, because it just entered the hex but will attack next turn instead - I did not wait because my recon flights on Burmese airfield hinted that there might be plane movements):

Ground combat at Lashio (62,46)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 1017 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 89

Defending force 1068 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 11

Allied adjusted assault: 31

Japanese adjusted defense: 28

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
20 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
28 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
36th Chinese Division
88th Chinese Division

Defending units:
144th JAAF AF Bn
12th JAAF AF Coy

Ground combat at Lashio (62,46)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 996 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 86

Defending force 1054 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 11

Allied adjusted assault: 11

Japanese adjusted defense: 22

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 1)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), fatigue(-)

Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
50 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Assaulting units:
36th Chinese Division
88th Chinese Division

Defending units:
144th JAAF AF Bn
12th JAAF AF Coy

-------------------------------------------------------------

As you know, what I am trying in Burma is simulating pressure, mainly in order to get a reaction. Apart from the Chinese expedition, I display a lot of units on the Burma-India border, garrisoned Cox’s Bazar with 2 units and started to expand its airstrip. We even hired locals who now roam through the Jungle with pairs of empty tin cans to simulate the Panzers making their way through this terrain.

Thanks for your interest

Gentlemen,

Here’s part three of my latest reports: China. When I find the time, I will post a map if anyone is interested.

Another deliberate attack against Chuhsien went in – Aztez keeps wearing down his troops, which looks just fine to me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Chuhsien (88,56)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 14973 troops, 136 guns, 55 vehicles, Assault Value = 537

Defending force 14615 troops, 81 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 420

Japanese adjusted assault: 248

Allied adjusted defense: 349

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 1)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1089 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 62 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 48 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 17 disabled

Allied ground losses:
154 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Assaulting units:
22nd/A Division
2nd Ind.Mixed Regiment
17th Division
22nd/B Division

Defending units:
88th Chinese Corps
100th Chinese Corps
3rd War Area
25th Group Army

The series of battles over this base illustrates nicely an effect of the ground combat resolution, which tends to focus losses on a unit at the top of the respective “attack list”. My 88th Chinese corps, which had the honour of being at the top, is in lousy shape by now, the 100th corps is almost in the same constitution as it was when it entered the battle of Chuhsien, just more experienced.

Conversely, the destroyed/disabled distribution for the Japanese indicates that this turn a new unit was on top of the list and took the majority of the hits, thus mostly disabled squads, but a nice number of those.

Elsewhere, the Chinese continue to beat up Amoy special base force:

Ground combat at 85,61

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 17705 troops, 90 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 678

Defending force 618 troops, 20 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Allied adjusted assault: 498

Japanese adjusted defense: 3

Allied assault odds: 166 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
341 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 74 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units retreated 1

Allied ground losses:
7 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
70th Chinese Corps
86th Chinese Corps
65th Chinese/C Corps

Defending units:
Amoy Special Base Force

So far, I am relatively pleased with the developments in China, but once aztez starts pushing his two monster stacks ahead, that may change rapidly.

Thanks for your interest

Gentlemen,

I still owe the report of the weekend-turn, the delay being even more inexcusable as there is little to report. The Chinese finally take Lashio, which means a multi-pronged drive on Mytkina (sp?) involving rather limited assets is about to start as the next phase of my Burma simulations.

Thanks for your interest

Gentlemen,

even though I did not update for a while, the game did continue at slow pace till July 4th. Unfortunately, it looks like Japan faced an economic meltdown, thus Aztez and I agreed to start something new. As playing against each other worked well - slow, but reliable gameplay, we will start a new game, this time "classical" GC2 scenario.

For me, this will be a drastic change as I will be the one who gets the chance to cause the economic meltdown this time - first time that I play as Japan on my own.

I will also start a new AAR, even though at first it will be slow, while I am trying to set up a turn 1.

Thank you for your interest - and I hope to see you soon in my new thread.

Hartwig
