Ok,PBEM, I was playing Japan.

My opponent used patrol planes(PBY) to naval attack~~ Extremely powerful.

Part of the reason they do so well is they launch two torpedoes apiece.

The problem is with the deliberate Design of CAP in AE. You had 501 planes on CAP. In the original WitP your CAP would have wiped out the attacking planes. In AE bombers will almost always get through as long as they have some escorts to sacrifice.

Also, if the Cats were flying under 5K feet and your CAP was at 15K or above, your CAP won't get down to attack the low-flying planes.

There is no really good solution to this problem, other than not to use naval power to attack enemy bases that have torpedo planes and US Cats. Your only solution is to establish bases from where you can fly Fighter Sweeps followed by bomber runs to close the enemy airfields.

I think only time Catalina was used to launch torpedo attack in daytime was in Guadalcanal, when they threw everything that could fry against IJN reinforcement convoy. IIRC, it was successful attack too, pilot (name was Cram, I think) did hit a transport. On the other hand "Black Cat" night operations with radar were quite common and successful. Only successful US torpedo attack by aircraft in Midway was made with PBY Catalina during night.
