Dennishe's AAR ( Damn the Torpedoes! ) demonstates what happends when the Allies build up Tabiteua early and focus on a Gilbert's campaign. Right now he has B-24's projcting power into the Northern Marshall's. This AAR is in September -- ours are still in July.

As illistrated below Tabiteuea has a potential maximum of a level 6 airfield and level 4 port. The 7th Air Force will move to Tabiteauea and planes now at Townsville will reposition.

The moving of the HQ is by this rule:

The air unit is located at a base and the Command level HQ that the group is assigned to is within transfer range of the air unit’s current or upgrading aircraft type and the Command HQ is located at a base with over 20,000 supplies. Supplies will be expended at the HQ base and the unit will receive damaged planes from the pool. There is no mention of a level 7 base requirement if the Command HQ is co-located. I use hope this works and it is not just an editing error of leaving off the level 7 base requirement ..

One might notice that supply has dropped below minimum let alone the 20K requirement. This resully operation is timed to be rectified with the increase to a level 4 port and mining of the harbor to prevent those pesky submarines from interdicting as they did at Cox's Bazzar.

The other logistical operation coinsides with the appearance of the 5th USAAF HQ at Brisbine and movement of 5th Bomber aircraft there .. then the air offense will continue and with the movement of SeaBeas to build bases .. the area will have to infrastructure to carry-on an air campaign .. From Cloncurry we can reach B-24 normal range right to Darwin ...

We plodding along slowly but the plan is begining to take shape ...

Strategic Update 13 JUL 42:

The strategic map below illistrates where the game it at right now.

In Burma the 10 USAAF has established at Imphal 2 B-25 groups and 3 fighter groups. Their mission is to interdict the cler terrain around Sweebo once that offense begins. The British/Commonwealth/Indian armies have a way to go to get organzed after we abandoned our futile efforts along the coast. Costing many aircraft on the ground ...

In OZ things are begining to get organzied just one hex south of Tennant Creek with in 20 or so days the 5th USAF HQ moving from Brisbine to Coucurry. Right now 3 SeaBees are working feavorishly on infrastructure there .. PM is at a happy stalemate but I am anticiapting some sort of invasion or more troops across the mountian ..

The SOPAC command has the defense of Luganville and Ndeni along with Suva and Pago Pago .. I am avodiing the Solomon's campaign unless I am forced into the situation by events.

Pacific Ocean Areas and soon 7th USAAF HQ will manage the Gilbert's and project force into the Sothern Marshall's. Once the 7th HQ is at Tabiteauea I will begin the air transfer from Townsville via Luganville ..to Tabiteauea ..

The other strategic note is the postioning of submarine assests into three patrol areas. Shorter subs patrol the Gilbert's while the Dutch and longer endurnance USN subamrines divide between Home Islands and the Truk corridor ..

You may have three AA Brigades available. There is one at Columbo and then you may get two more at Aukland. Once their TO&E fill out, they will be nasty. Use wisely.

I bought out the 6th and 77th Heavy AA [3.7" or 90mm] that belonged to the Indian III Corps they filled out and are providing some resistance at Akyab ..

The Kiwi units are at Alice Springs right now but will follow the I AUS to Daily Waters .. I suspect that the IJ will committ much to bomb my units in that one hex just before Daily Waters. Once we capture Daily Waters .. we can provide CAP. This along with 5 BF's with light flak ...

Great story. Always good to sea an Allied player fighting back from the start. You are always a couple of steps ahead of your opponent if you can determine when and where the major battles take place

Thanks Dennishe! I have to learn to do Paintshop if I am to come close to your AAR's

One other thing has been Dennishe that I have ignored his offenses instead of reacting to his moves where it does not fit into the overall plan . I set for example Tabiteuea and Tarawa very early in this little affair and it has changed the IJ's plans rather than me react to his plans ..

This turn we decided to shock the IJ at Wenchow .. he is simply bringing in more forces and supply and I think I have an opportunity to move him out of Wenchow .. I have 2:1 44K vs. 21K minus supply, leadership, and terrain . and about 100 AFV's .. I have shock .. I suspect losing something like 6K to his 4K but it changes the odds in my favor .. the Russian approach at attrition ...

This could go down as a huge blunder that loses China or a huge frustration for the IJ ...

BAKER ISLAND:

The picture below shows the latest developments. What I believe is a mini KB of 5 CVL's/CVE's is attempting to station between Pearl Harbor and Tabiteueua on the East side of Baker Island. The prizes of troops and cargo would be discouraging to the Allied cause. The Allies have this turn 2 CVTF's each with 2 CV's a total OOB of 125 fighters, 110 DB's and 15 TB. There are will within range to interdict into this plan.

We shall move to the intercept point as diagramed below and roll the dice. Godspeed ...

BAKER Island 16 JUL 1942

The picture below demonstrates the miscalculation we made. We moved 8 hexes and stopped .. the IJ retreated 3 hexes to rendezvous with a BB SAG. I cannot guess what the IJ are up to But right now they are heading west together .. we shall move our CV's due North and continue our patrols ..

Well besides the KB and an overall superior IJN ..I always thought that PP's were the big governor of Allied operations. I am begining to understand that Base Forces and the composition of base forces are a real big factor. I just do not have enough to support operations in SOPAC & CENPAC while supporting operations in OZ also.

I have started the move of forces back slowly back toward CENPAC at a pace that allows new base forces to fill in the gaps. In just a few weeks the 5th USAAF HQ arrives in Brisbine and eventually its HB's willl transfer to Oz to support the operation there ..

In the meantime we have set up convoys to support our CENPAC operations this turn ..

The Blenheim IV's are built at 12 per month and I have lost 77 + 44 more are need in 80 days .. a little calculation shows the IJN BB bombardment mission in Burma was quite effective at slowing our operations there .. It will take a year to replace those losses ...On the other hand the 10th USAAF is slowly heading into theater and they will be stationed at Imphal & Sinchar . both level 7 bases ..

More later ..

We have four contacts with USN submarines but all duds ..

An ASW contact at Pearl Harbor produces one hit

ASW attack near Pearl Harbor at 179,105

Japanese Ships
SS I-24, hits 1

Allied Ships
DD Stack
DD Dewey

SS I-24 is located by DD Stack

This produced minor flooding with the message "taking on some water" without the message "severe damage"

With this a PBY reports attacking I-24:
PBY-5 Catalina from VP-43 attacking SS I-24 at 179,105
SS I-24 is reported HIT

We might very well have damaged her enough for this submarine to leave the AO ..[Area of Operations]

The air offense in the Gilbert's / Marshall's has begun ... What will be needed is the USN CV fleet to protect our bases in the Gilberts from Bombardment ... we have layed mines .. have PT boats in place ..and have CV's waiting at the right range .. if the IJ plans operations here it will take the "Death Star" every bombardment raid to protect the BB SAG's .. more fuel and at least I will know where the KB is .. a small price to pay

The ground bombardment exchange at Port Moesby and Wenchow continue ..the IJ do not yet have enough forces here for an attack ..I could start planning a relief action on PM but I would much rather stick to the current plan .. put pressure on the Lower Marshall's and force action out here away from where the resoruces and fuel are .... and where I can more easily isolate airbases and forces for attack ..

More later ..

Submarine warfare ..

well above I documented that I-24 was smacked by a PBY and found by a DD ASW force .. we have one more tibit to add ..a ground loss of one float plane .. together this adds up to chalking up one submarine .. only a hundred or so more to go ..

The holidays allows two turns to kick off today!

Japanese Ships
xAK Kotoku Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
SC Ch 31
PB Naruto Maru #3

Allied Ships
SS Drum

Severe engine damage and explosion below decks .. she might make it back to port ...

The Gar bounces 4 duds off a TK ..

Sub attack near Satawal at 106,106

Japanese Ships
TK Tennan Maru
PB Koei Maru

Allied Ships
SS Gar

The same night attacks as yesterday and we lost a Hudson over Mandalay ..

Morning Air attack on 33rd/C Division, at 59,46 (Mandalay)

At Ledo the same 8 Sally's and our night CAP does not intercept in 35% moonlight ... THe IJ gets a transport on the ground ..

Night Air attack on Ledo , at 65,38

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 33 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Allied aircraft
B-17D Fortress x 7
B-17E Fortress x 40

No Allied losses

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 12

The 7th USAAF just does not have the accuracy to shut down a base with 50 bombers yet ..but each raid gets us a little but better ..

But ...

B-17E Fortress from 5th BG/72nd BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 5th BG/72nd BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 5th BG/72nd BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 11th BG/431st BG at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 11th BG/431st BG at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 11th BG/431st BG at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 7th BG/436th BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 5th BG/23rd BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 11th BG/26th BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

B-17E Fortress from 5th BG/72nd BS at Tabiteuea grounded due to maintenance

So 20% of the bombers are in the shop after two raids ...

On other fronts ..

We did get one ASW operation in ..

PBY-5 Catalina from VP-91 attacking SS I-10 at 136,131 No joy although ....

There is one more significant event to discuss ..

AGP Hilo shadowed by E14Y1 Glen at 227,78 near San Diego

This means a IJN Submarine is patrolling my San Diego cargo lanes . this will require a lot of attention ...

One day closer to Essex Class carriers !!! 'till then beans, bullets, and butts again this turn .. Pearl harbor uses more than 10K fuel a week sustaining operations there .. and we just do not have the Tankers to move enough fuel to all the needy locations!

It gets better .... all the ships taking supplies to and fro through PH use fuel too

I sent a huge convoy to Oz & SoPac .. when tht returns I can build up PH again .. in the meantime we are quite vulnerable to the submarines now starting to patrol my main corridor ...

Yep Ny59giants .. its logistics!

Not true if you use the following from the Manual, page 107 "6.2.13.1 Refueling at Port and At Sea"

The refueling options are:
* Do Not Refuel - No refueling will take place
* Minimal Refuel - Each ship takes on enough fuel to complete the present TF mission, plus approximately a 10% pad
* Tactical Refuel - Similar to Minimal Refuel, but with a 50% pad, and
* Full Refuel - All ships refueled to their maximum Endurance

When your ships leave the West Coast, set them to "Do Not Refuel" option in the TF and both their home port and destination to Pearl. Use at least two Waypoints to avoid some subs as I would have my Japanese subs in Patrol Zones in case you get lazy.

Once they get to Pearl and have docked and unloading, switch their destination back to your home port on the west coast. Then, switch to the "Minimal Refuel" option and refuel from Pearl (I try to Refuel at Sea option first so my high endurance trasnports/tankers are used first). Only your short legged transport and tankers will take on fuel to get back home.

Yes, this means a few moments more of micro-management, but it will help you build up a stockpile of fuel. That is why I like Christmas Island as part of my LOS to/from NZ & OZ as I can use ships to drop of fuel here and return to west coast without drawing from my just unloaded fuel.

I can see now that this detail is really needed as I have been just running the convoys back and forth full refuel .. over time this has drained the fuel depot reserve ..

This turn we followed up on all our restricted 4th USAAF airgroups. The strategy I am using is to train as many 20 exp pilots to 50 experince pilots. Once they hit 50 I release them into the reserve pool and get the next batch.

So for the army we have 116 in the pilot reserve with very few below 50 ...

I did check Tennant Creek this turn and the findings are shown below. Bascally it reinforces what Ksfgo explained previously in this thread. As Forts and airfield go up so does the maximum supplies transfered per 'tick.' In this case I can verify that now the little number in the red circle is "600 Max" It looks like this is happening twice weekly? Maybe I am optimistic ...

So Tennant Creek can be built to level 6 and eventually to lvl 9 .. it is taking about a month for each increase in level using the current 6 engineer units there .. 3 more Sea Bees are on their way ..So when this gets fully built up I am counting on 1500 supplies down this road per week ..

I believe weather and die rolls are playing an effect here as I have completly shut down a base with a 60 plane raid at 14ooo'. Granted a smaller base but 70 plus runway and other collateral damage.

This turn is one of those "Beans, Bullets, and Butts" kind of turns .. I have to get a lot more fuel each week to Pearl Harbor if we are to continue operations here ...Then there is the Gilberts ..

In the Gilbert's and in particular Tabitueua, we need a minimum of 50K supplies on hand minimum. Then there are our operations in New Caladonia building up Nomea and Luganville .. lots of stuff and lots of xAK's to get moving in the right directions .. let's not even think of Oz ...

The problem .. the IJ are pretty determined to make sure this does not happen. So things have to be planned that if a raid occurs the minimum number of ships are lost. There is a balance of convoys for sub protection and being scattered to minimize losses from AMC's and stray CVE's .. plus operating within patrol zones ..

The only good news to report is that Burma is starting to shape up. The bought out units are being built up quite nicely and we are forming up "lost" divisions. These forces have low morale and training but .. I am thinking they will occupy a supply line as good as elite forces We should be able to kick off our operations in 3 months ...

Otherwise we kick off the days until the big green industrial machine starts kicking into gear ...

You won't be getting 600t per supply movement - you'll be getting (600-wastage); for TC that's from Alice Springs, so about 30% losses in transit, meaning 600*0.7 or about 425 per movement. Movements should be 4/week as 0.7 is close enough to permit that.

Trying to expand forts and airfield simultaneously is not sensible; you want to focus on whichever will be quicker as that will allow more resources to be effectively put towards the next step. Don't feel the need to overload the place with engineers - they can only build as far as they have supply available to them, so if you apply so many engineers that supply is drained construction will go no faster than it would with less engineers. You do have an awful lot of aviation support troops hanging around - I'm aware that a lot of the 'initial' engineering capacity is in base forces etc but remember that everyone there has to eat, not just the builders.

Submarine warfare ..

well above I documented that I-24 was smacked by a PBY and found by a DD ASW force .. we have one more tibit to add ..a ground loss of one float plane .. together this adds up to chalking up one submarine .. only a hundred or so more to go ..

I have a general rule of thumb. One Allied DC hit will sink a small Japanese sub 50% of the time and two 100%. Two DC hits will sink a large Japanese sub 75% of the time-I have never seen one take three hits and survive. It depends on the type but some of the upgraded DC have a bigger kick. It also helps if you pile on a bunch of near misses.

A mine hit on a Japanese sub will sink it 95% of the time.
