Nice Op Aces, I hope to be in your position August '43 in Burma.

I think there are three things to contribute to this position:

1. The IJ seriously under defended the area, and over estimated the effects of supply on the Allies.
2. The IJ decided to expand and take Port Moesby and Darwin. This consumed no less then 5 extra divisions at a time Burma was presenting resistance.
3. I comitted very early in this game to a Burma campaign. Nothing like this was imagined, but a real devotion to build up bases, and infrastrcuture. Then opportunity came ...

The supply limits are going to bog this operation down. But we will have met our objectives. Split Burma into two North/South halves and decimate the starving forces. Without expending supply or bodies we are forcing the IJ back to a line around Mandalay. Now the real bloody part of this story starts ...

This partiicular game is +/- 60 days variation for reinforcements. One direct effect is variation on the transport aircraft meant for Burma. As I look at the reinforcement track the first C-87 liberators arrive in 87, days followed by 24 FEB 43, and then 19 May 43. Not enough to sustain operations.

It looks like Transsports from the 5th USAAF wing will have to be shipped in India to sustain operations. I can send a 100 aircraft over the next 90 days via Cape Town to India. The real problem in my mind is how to get them back to the land of Oz for Solomon operations if needed? We might need to put a BF on Cocos Island ...I have been avoiding this as Betty's operate out of the DEI, and unlike Canoerebel's strategy .. I do not have the sea projection in this area.

I might start planning now for a mid-43 establishment of a base on Cocos Island with the intent of being able to shift long range air assests from Burma to Oz ..or the reverse ..

Othwewise we continue to prepare for our Marshall's campaign. ...

More later ..

In other news .. I have a real airfield @ Kalemyo... Kalemyoexpands airfield to size 5

I have analyzed the victory point trends .. the IJ zenith .. was 30 JUL 42 .. 1:665 advantage ... the IJ has steadily declined to 07 NOV 42 1.432. advantage or in VP's 19051: 13306. I am quite concerned that the IJ can make progress in BF points cost material points. I wonder how much Rangoon will cost to take?

My other concern is although we have made great progress , my casualty count so far is beyond 2 years of Indian production. My forces are at around 75% strength that are engaged near Mandalay. I wonder how long I can keep this up?

I am thinking it is a combination of fotress level, flak in the hex, and some of the groups bombing accuracy is 50% . still given the density in the hex of now 62K or about 2K AV I need a lot more than 10 AV per bombing run to influence the outcome. We are going to have to take a different approach as the map below shows -- The IJ are lining up for a WWI war of attrition that the Allies cannot win here [lack of supply, low british replacement rates, and lack of sea projection are just a few factors] rather we have to use our temporary armor superority to force the IJ to spread out and protect supply lines.

Any seige requires isolating supply anyway ...

The situation right now ...

Its a dark day for the Allies as we have 194 destroyed sqauds to the IJA 3 destroyed squads. The disabled squads will eventually recover .. but it 194 destroyed squads will take years at 15 Britsh squads per month .. I have to hope the Indians took the brunt of this disaster ...

Ok we have to completely rethink Burma and redeploy for a defensive front. My original assumption that superior armor was going to tilt the odds was completly incorrect. Now it is a battle of maneuver and supply ...

UPDATE:

China:

The IJ primarily bombed units attriting them slowly while building up experince. The focus has shifted to strategic bombing. Smacking heavy industry and manpower. This is exteremly effective in China, and has ramifications in all theaters.

Comment:
I do not mind this really, as it makes the game competitive. I do not see WitP AE as a simulation of WWII as I would not imagine a chess set of Union and Rebel chess pieces as a simulation of the American Civil war. Pieces have attributes, they move, and do things according to a set of structured rules. To try and somehow have a delusion in that this simulates WWII sets one up for dissapointment.

I do wish the game used a better intercept system allowing aircraft along the way to intercept and not just those some distance around the target, but this is a game and it is simplly a matter of finding a strategy style of play that works within the game.

Burma:
From what I can see the IJ have committed 125,000 troops to the Burma AO. Given jungle multiplies defense X3, and that it appears that an armor advantage alone is not enough to overcome less than 1-1 odds, and the IJ have enough here to ensure stalemate. The abdundace of jungle and rough terrain, lack of road networks, and lack of supply, adds an additional difficulty in shifting forces. Despite frightening initial gains we are locked in a WWI type struggle. Again, I am very happy we decided to use the stacking limits map for all hexes. It really limits the current operations in Burma but the game is far more enjoyable and challanging. I wish we started this game with these constraints. A lot of effort is going into correcting the situation.

OZ:

There is only one force group left in the land of OZ. Fast Transports are trying to pull off survivors while armor is closing in to destroy the units. Quite a race. Then it will be 2 months to reorganize the I AUS Corps back at Alice Springs and eventually to Sydney.

I think the attack on Darwin represented the IJ high point and the begining of the end. I believe there is a very delicate point in which the IJ have to be content given scenrario #1, with sticking to the original premise of making to 1946 as the victory condition. Here the IJ committed 2 divisions+ and 1/2 a division ended up in the ocean. This was not enough given the AUS I Corps AV and US support even with lack of supply to hold OZ.

Supply simply reduces AV and prevents restoration of disabled sqauds -- a lack of supply does not prohibit an attack. If 20 AV are holding open terrain and 500 unsupplied AV along with 100 heavy bombers come calling regularly -- this postion can be taken with zero supply. As it is, my supply was mostly around 70% and I committed 2000 AV [along with the heavy bombers] to do the job. The IJ needed at least 2000 AV to hold this area. In real life the IJA felt that attacking Darwin would not be enough, and that all of Northern OZ would need to be occupied with no less than 5 divisions. They and the IJN went afdter Midway instead ...

As a note, The IJ committed another 3 divisions to take Port Moesby. That severely weakened other areas -- like Burma. However, to give the IJ some credit, I think if we were playing with the current stacking limits Burma would be locked up around Katha not Swebo. I have come to discover from the exercise the difference between say 50,000 troops and 60,000 troops given the IJ units, terrain, and the CRT is remarkable.

CENPAC:

I am using a strategy of measured force to take critical objective while building a base of operations in this area. I read other AAR's that use the US platforms much more agressively and begin the attrition process early. This strategy has a special unique advantage in that the 6 original USN CV's get replaced one year later if destroyed. However, I find the slow process of putting overwhelming force at a single point and not engaging for simple attrition a more comfortable style of play.

Soon in '44 I will be able to put overwhelming force everywhere

SOPAC:

This area is very quiet with the exception of moving forces around to comply with stacking limits. 1943 might be the time to force some action in the Solomon's if only because we do not have the forces to make the big leap from the Marshall's to the Marianas in 1943 ...

Ok more later ...

Turns away ... we have a plan for Burma .. we bought a bdge from Ceylon and will replace the Indian 7th division's population supression duties at Bombay. Miltia can exert force just as well as trained troops in unarmed peace loving populations ...

Noumea makes a great forward base but is too close to the action to be a good staging base. I have moved my operations to a secret base elsewhere. It will take two weeks to fully have infrastructure in place. Meanwhile we are getting fully preped for a very bloody contest in '43.

In other news .. Kayemo in Burma now is a big enough base to hold Bombers ... we begin to stage our aircraft for deep opertional force projection ..

The Pennsyvania had an accident .in port while refitting . and caught 22 sys damage and 150 more days in the pen .. The Idaho made it to San Francisco and will repair its engine damage it took from 2 18" torps in our Makin invasion ... this at a much faster rate than Pearl. The California has just left on its trek to Alameda and the West Virgina is about 20 days from Los Angeles .. still afloat!! 1 sys 85 flt and 25 engine damage .. the worse has been 95 flt and it has self repaired to 73 flt twice in this journey ..

The main mission for these pre-war battleships to is absorb the punishment and escort landings ... I would much rahter have those 75's and 105's shooting at my ol' BB's than AP's ...or Vals and Kates hunting these beasts ....

I sure hope the California can make it to SF ..

Temporary flotation repairs failing aboard BB California

The West Virgina sort of had the same course with reparing things along the way .. I can only hope for a similar fate ..but leaving the California in port to occupy precious dockyard space was a futile exercise ..

On the animation 2 Tojo's, 2 Nick's, and a Oscar for a B25 and a B24 .. runway/base damage is negligiable ... the FOW says 22 aircraft total downed with many of the Damaged Tojo's being ops losses ..I do think this raid had a "Doolittle" effect in that the bombers got through despite fighter aircraft CAP and getting an intercept.

Long range ..severe storms the long range B-24 Kwajalein Island raid has little effect ..

Be very carefull with clicking .. I looked back at the turn and I clicked one guy accidentaly into move mode .. the entire attack was worthless and the defense gets a free 42 mile teleport into even better terrain.. I will have to take 10 days to surround these guys (4 miles per day to slog through the marsh ..)

Ok more later ..

It does show the IJN that if they come to play .. we have Land Based air that can do great harm to ships ... I am not sure the KB want to mess with LBA DB's and 6 CV's 4 CVL's .. about 800 Naval aircraft total based in this area .. add in the USAAF interlocking bases and we have a "Festung Gilberts"

Ok quiet turn .. more later ..

For 5 Sallys downed 2 Helens by flak the IJ trades 2 runway hits and a Trop IIc on the ground ... that does not count the aircraft that do not make it back home because of the long range .. The bad side of this was that the CAP was brushed aside in clear weather and 89% moonlight ...

I think there are two things that have to come togeher the moon and weather . if these are not aligned with the mission then you simply fly make some noise and then take ops losses ..but if you hit an undefended overstacked airbase and sneak in on a clear moonlit night . it is beautiful ...
