The Map of the Marshalls below shows the situation after taking Wolje. After incessent 4E and 2E raids there were 50 support personell left on the atoll .. we brought in two Marine Rgt's just in case. The APD's are now taking off the Marines from the Atoll as we get ready to clean out the next Atolls. The whole process from start to finish takes about a month including building the ports up enough to take off the heavy stuff.

The map also shows our projection over Ponape. Eventually this atoll will feel our wrath ...

I will be able to execute a faster opertional pace once the Essex CV's come into theater. Right now I am restricting operations wihtin interlocking patrol zones. Those patrol zones are now extending to 20 hexes from 15 with the new B-24's that patrol ...

SOUTHEAST Asia:

The map below shows how Burma and Sotheast Asia are progressing. The IJ have made a committment to Bangkok and more importantly Ayuthia with 25,000 troops digging in on the river crossing. The IJAAF have 130 fighters at Bangkok to prevent 4E's from dislodging this position.

The problem is that at this stage in '43 the IJ will just refill the Sendai . we have a lot more attrition to do to affect operations in Southeast Asia but this turn was a start ..about 10% of the total aircraft in this theater were shot down and then there are the opertional losses ...

WitPTracker is an absolute must to play this game. I have discovered a little software behavior that I find more than annoying. It seems that airgroups that upgrade change their range to maximum range. Whether anybody is actually flying or training is not as important it seems as range. Now I have a bomber group that was orginally set to range '0' that upgraded last week to be totally fatigued this turn!!!!!

I little check and 40% training at maximum range. I suspect this is intended that one cannot just set and forget airgroup and that overtime unattended forces will attrite. But as a newbie I lost the entire Chineese airforce due to 40% training at maximum range before I had WitPTracker installed.

It is these little frustrations that make the game tedious at best. Given the circles of apollonius interception problem and the air model -- this game will probably be my last. There is an interesting conversation in the war room where I newbie asks some questions and is having some difficulty with context .. the designer berates the newbie .. myself as a former software architect would take the feedback as my UI is not very intutive .. in fact that a tool like WitPTracker is needed to play the game effectively tells me that the game UI needs work .. but that is me ..

The 22 APR 43 represents a landmark in this affair. We are even in points 20,238 IJ to 20,240 Allies. A huge chunk of this is Rangoon. We are going to need to capture some more bases heavly favored to the Allies if we are going to achieve victory by '45. Bangkok believe it or not is not it as it is only a mulitplier of (1)!

The Map below shows the situation. The IJ have brought the KB here to interdict Tavoy. I believe this is teh easiest place to project power as Singapore is just 2 days saling away. No need for oilers or support ships unlike in the central pacific where a tremendous support is needed for the IJN to operate.

I have decided to fly 112 Trop IIc's over Tavoy and see what happends. I suspect the KB fighters will show up along with a hundred or so Oscars. I see trading Trops for KB Zeros as a good exchange for the future. We shall see how this unfolds.

In the meantime the IV Corps consoldates as does the III and XXXIII Corps. Once in postion, we will begin to take railroads and bases around Bangkok and make the position untenable. This will take some time as the Monsoon season is upon us. But the two bases shown are way under defended and once taken will begin the process of narrowing supply LOC.

CENPAC continues to consoladate with patrol craft now looking into the Wake Island area as we prepare the last invasions to clean out the Marshall's.

The map below shows our strategy in the Central Pacific. We have search arcs over occupied territory and methodicaly we advance. With each atoll taken we advance our projection of power into the IJ battlespace. This map also shows why Roi Namur is quite critical to our operations in that our ability to search deeper into the IJ battlespace.

I doubt that it's so much an intentional thing as it is a fit for one situation and not another. When in the middle of training, as you say. When a squadron is "on duty" resetting the max range to accommodate the new a/c is a convenience for the player to catch them if they forgot to do it. IIRC it was something players wanted a long time ago. There are so many different situations that the interface can't be made to account for them all, and adding more and more code to check has a price too.

Anyhow it doesn't change anything, but I hope if you understand it as more the limitation that it is rather than just a dumb decision then maybe it will seem less frustrating and more like using a hammer instead of a nail gun because that's all you got.

Then the losses of aircraft should not require a 3rd party application to find ... the problem is that opertional losses can be very very silent and it was only thorugh WitPTracker as a newbie I discovered that upgrading causes ranges go out to maximum range menawhile I took inordinate numbers of operational losses that I just did not undersstand ..

A little story . I was a systems architect. Customer Service flagged calls for service as "User Error" if it was a problem RTFM or using the software as unintended. I defined this for my department where we did not make the User Interface as intitutive and used this customer feedback as part of the requirements.

I fired my fair share of developers who felt our customers were just idiots and just did not get it -- as it was clear to me that the developer just did not get it

overtime the team developed intitutive software that did not take thousands of pages to figure out ..

But I am in the medcial field now .. soon an intensivist ...

The Airwar in Southeast Asia:

The picture below tells a thousand stories, but I want to focus on yesterdays air battle over Tavoy/ night raid on Bangkok. The battle over that sleepy village has cost both the IJ and RAF dearly with the last three airbattles depleting the Trop IIc pools completly. The introduction of the KB has changed the dyanamics in this theater for sure and the RAF alone cannot keep this rate of attrition in Southeast Asia. Thus we will rotate out the RAF 221 to Rangoon and rotate in the 10th USAAF fighter wings, 100 aircraft total to bear the brunt of this battle. The experince and quality is much lower for these boys .. but I have 192 aircraft in the pool along with 546 trained pilots .. Verdun over the skies of Tavoy .. I will bleed them dry of pilots and planes ...

Well there are player defined upgrades but .. one cannot shift production .. but the game would be lopsided even more at this point

There are three ways to look at this data. Strategically this is not a good result. 5.5:1 causulties will never win a war unless you are Chineese .. Also the numbers of squads disabled will hurt AV on the oeprational level meaning the ability to keep 1:1 odds is not likely. On an operational scale we both lost 4% of our forces meaning we cannot sustain this level of attrition and force the IJA out of Tavoy.

Reinforcements will be needed .. and soon to break this deadlock.

More bombing in China ...

One other piece of news ... TK Kyokuyo Maru is reported to have been sunk near Kanoya on Mar 06, 1943 That would be one of those huge TK's that move 15K units of fuel ...

In two weeks the rains begin ..
