How much recon are you generally doing, Larry? It looks to me from the screenshots like you are not flying many recon missions. Those can be a big help in determining where his strongest forces and reserves are located.

Um......a little while ago I flew some recon missions and scopped out a lot of areas to see where what was where and I'm not sure I
decifered the signal.....I mean the AI could hide tanks in the light woods or something and I'd not know it. I need practice in seeing
what the recon flights are telling me. A bit more RAM in my scull would help but, D'oh, I'm decreasing in RAM as I get older and can't
seem to remember stuff that used to be a bit easier to remember. It's an un-nerving feeling that you don't want to share with anybody.

Hi Larry,

No worries. I actually have a little sticky note with a checklist of things to remind myself to do during a WITE turn. #1 is Recon and it's not enough to just click on the AI button. Do that a few times and then manually fill in the gaps with recon missions. It's amazing how helpful it can be in developing the strategic picture if you keep up with this.

Regards,

- Erik

That's the problem.....keeping up with the strategic picture.  I've got 2 ( two ) PBEM games going at the same time and even though they aren't the same turn, I'm having the problem in my head of overlapping "strategic situatons" from one game to the other.   It's not easy for me to try to keep the two games separate in my head.  Not complaining though, it's a great game, lots of fun.

Here's July 30, 1942 (T59) the affected part of the front lines. KLilly has broken through again. I'm pretty sure I can probably cut off
maybe his spearhead(s). It's worth trying I think.

This is what I ended up with in the way of Soviet moves in the Crimea area: I'm trying to glom around his spearheads and threaten to
pinch off his thrust and pulled back on the other side to the other side of the nearest river. This is in preperation to pull back even
further into the Crimea itself. Although I'm not sure I should pull back that far. I'm thinking there on the riverbank might be the best
place. What do all you guys think: (!) pull back to the entrance to the Crimea itself where it bottlenecks to 2-hexes wide or (2) stay right
there at the riverbank or (3) something else entirely.

How far back you go into the Crimea depends largely on what he does next turn.  If you could keep the left side as far forward as Kakhovka that would be ideal.

I've decided to use the 27th Army as my Reserve Army. They are all assembled, railed, and ready for deployment. I've railed enough
troops to the trouble spots so now I'm waiting for another trouble spot to show itself.

This is a close up of where I committed the 27th Army. I figured that the presence of Axis armour deserved some added protection.
I'm going to move some other army to the Reserve army I'm building. I guess I'm going to need a reserve really soon now.

I exhausted my AP's building 6 rifle divisions at Stalingrad. They will come in handy when the Axis units that were reducing that pocket
just north of the Crimea entrances arrive on the front lines near Rostov.

Larry: Great AAR, and you are obviously doing well, so any advice I give isn't really needed in the long-run.

But for future reference.....your C and C is very strange.

You have pieces of fronts all over the place; NW front is up north, and south, so is Leningrad Front.

You are using a couple fixed HQ fronts (I think I see colors from Moscow, Urals, etc), which can be out of range, and probably have crap leaders.

There are 3 fronts in the Crimea....but none of them is Crimean Front. Which doesn't appear anywhere on the map! Where is that useful one? It starts with KONEV in charge, so it's one you need to get in play.

I realize the fronts are in pieces because you are shifting reserves. I tend to keep lots of Soviet units in STAVKA, until I am ready to commit to a front. Even still, I tend to keep entire ARMIES in STAVKA, sometimes through attacks. I hate to have so many units in STAVKA, but as the Soviets, you need to save APs for unit creation, so making C and C perfect is really a challenge.

Some of your fronts, like SW Front, are very much UNDER-loaded. I would try to use fewer FRONTS, but max them all out, or even a bit over

Thanks. I am reading other AAR's religiously which gives me hints and tips on what to do in this one. I'm always intending to
improve it and make it more informative but obviously fall short all the time. I'm not sure that indicating where what armies are is
all that informative but I can do more of that if you guys think it's needed. I'm kinda new at doing AAR's for WITE and I'm still
experimenting with what can be done.

I know........isn't it great.

Oooooooo, I hadn't thought of that. I'll look into it and swap / change what's needed. Thanks.

I wasn't aware that there is a Crimea Front. I don't have them all memorized yet and there's obviously some changes that need to
be made in the leaders and I need to save up some AP's to do it.

I seem to have the thought in the back of my head that once a division is assigned to an army that it tends to stay there. I haven't the AP's to make intra-front changes of HQ's and it tends to be expensive as I recall. Your idea of using STAVKA as a transfer device
is a good one though. I really appreciate all your ideas. I'm still learning.

Another good idea. Sorting out my C & C is something I'll do asap as soon as it's my turn again ( server game ). I gave some thought
to the ramifications of having the Northern Front units intermixed in with the Moscow MD units and didn't want to spend the AP's to
make the change and I thought that as long as the HQ unit is within range of it's divisions the lack of support from the front wasn't
all that critical. Especially given that I needed the additional rifles in the new spot very badly. Now that the initial crisis is averted I can
change what needs be changed. Thanks for your interest in this game. Your ideas are making it better. I'm having a blast playing
KLilly and want to thank him again for "paying it forward". What I mean is that KLilly bought the WITE game and gave it to me just to
play with him. I appreciated that and thought it was such a good idea that I bought a copy of WITE and gave it to some young man in
Italy whose name I don't remember right now. He said he was going to pay it forward as soon as he was able. Maybe the chain will
keep getting longer and longer. Cool.

Crimean Front stars the game as North Caucausus, but changes name sometime in late '41, IIRC. It's kind of Greenish-Yellow in color. KONEV is in charge, and he is one of the top Soviet commanders.

IIRC, the Urals, and other MDs have really bad commanders. Because they are static, though, that's OK.

In general, I keep alot at STAVKA, until I am ready to make a permanent assignment. Reserves are always assigned to STAVKA. In particular, UNREADY and building units are always with STAVKA.

It's always much cheaper to move divisions from command to command, than Army HQs.

I forget to move FBDs as an Axis player - in every game I have played - which is probably the the only unforgivable sin in WITE in 1941.
(getting out my Klingon Pain Stick)

Sov command structure is vital. Decide on a standard for your Army Hqs - standardization is better than optimization because you are 1 human and not 20,000 terrified - i mean fanatically dedicated - clerks in moscow. So, how about putting in each Army 1 RR brigade, 2 sapper regiments, 1 heavy gun, 1 AVGK artillery, 1 heavy mortar. No one will agree with this or what is best, but it is simple. This will change as years progress and your stuff gets better.

If an Army owns Cav Corps, buy enough tank battalions and sappers to give each Cav Corps 2 tanks, 1 sapper regiment. again, people will say something else is better and they are probably right, but this is soviet simple.

Units expecting to fight must not be under STAVKA control. If you are stting on APs, just hit "G" for auto assign. Be careful that an HQ is not selected when you do this :)
