I'm interested in getting my feet wet in AE, but the price tag is a little steep. Not trying to flame or anything, I just wanted to know if the game goes on sale periodically or if I am stuck at the set price.

Thanks.

It seems like around the holidays at the end of the year they often run a sale. There is an old saying: "past results do not guarantee future performance". That plus you would have to wait until the end of the year.

To answer your question, it was only on sale once before (that I know about) about a year ago. But if you buy at full retail, and enjoy strategy games rich in detail, you'll find this is the cheapest game you ever bought.

I bought AE almost two years ago along with a couple of other games. I fiddle about with AE almost every day, and the other games I bought at the same time still sit in their boxes in my closet.

You should take a good look at the forums. Notice the number of subjects and posts for AE vs any other game listed. That many active forumites ( which I am sure is only a percentage of the number of active players ), says it better than anything I can think to type. At full price this game is more than a bargain. Did I mention AE has the best support team I have ever seen ?

This is computer gaming's best $80 investment. That said, last Christmas it was on sale for $57 if I remember correctly. But why would you want to wait that long to possibly save $23?

Cheers,
CC

It's by far the best money I've ever spent for a computer game.

I know the price tag can bring a bit of a shock, but if WWII pacific is something you love, then this game is what you want to buy.

If you're into detail and historical accuracy, then this game is for you. I'm probably around 1 cent per hour played on this game. It's held me since the day it was released. And, the same is true for the previous two games (WITP and UV).

If they release an updated game, I'd buy it the second it comes out if it's less than $500. If it's more than that, I'll buy it after the first minute.

There is price and price per minute played. In the first category AE is very expensive, in the second it's ridiculously cheap.

It's worth the money. In terms of cost per hour it's worked out for me at around 0.000001 pennies, even less in cents.

While I agree that this is without doubt the best investment I have bought in gaming, It's not for everyone.  If you are looking for an very in depth treatment of the pacific war and love micromanagement then this game is for you.  If however you hate micromanagement and are used to simpler styles of games (panzer general, hearts of iron) this might not be you cup of tea, it's not for everyone.  Panzer General style games and Hearts of Iron are games that are enjoyed by many players and that's terrific but folks have different tastes when it comes to war games.  As others have pointed out look around the boards and see if this seems like something you might like.  If it is something that you enjoy (really in depth and micromanagement) you will not be sorry for even the full price, I'm sure not.  I'm only posting a minor point as some folks have bought this game, opened it, took one look at how complex it is then shut it down and sold it.  I would never sell mine and if somehow I lost all my software this would be the only guaranteed software I would buy again without reservation regardless of cost.

Small side note: In decades of buying software this is without doubt the best supported game I've ever had. Matrix at least with me has an outstanding record of support for their titles. I know other may argue with titles that are out of Matrix games direct control (they rely on out of house programmers) but I've been very satisfied with the level of support I've gotten from them.

If you knew somebody was willing to sell brand new Cadillac convertibles in front of your main Post Office, this Saturday between noon and four P.M., for $1000, and there was an unlimited stock of them, I suspect every unemployed and homeless person in your town could find the means to get the money up.

Now....in that the game does not cost $1000, I would say you have a decision to make.

A good dinner out on the town with your "significant" other would cost at least $80 and that "pleasure" only lasts an hour or two at the most. I've been playing WiTPAE for a few years and it has given me hundreds of hours of "pleasure" (mixed in with a little bit of pain thanks to pws1225). If you do the math, the answer is a no brainer.

The first time you get a coordinated naval strike against a wily PBEM opponent you'll be screaming yes yes! YESSSS!

Just make sure you don't have any porn open as well when the significant other checks up to see what all the fuss is about
