Hi everyone,
I'm back from vacation and just wanted to post an update for you all.
First, on the second expansion for Distant Worlds, it is moving along well. We hope to start beta testing within about two weeks and we are aiming to release before Christmas, hopefully by October.
I expect quite a bit more information on that will start to appear in September.
Second, our usual artist for Distant Worlds is a bit overloaded at the present time and we were planning to use a different artist for this expansion. With that thought and some of the excellent work I've seen here, I figured I should give some of our outstanding modders the opportunity to apply for the work before going elsewhere (assuming some of you are interested). The standard for original art for Distant Worlds is quite high, so if you think you are up to the task and will have time in August and September to work with us on this, please e-mail me at erikr@matrixgames.com and point me to some of your work in the e-mail please. I can't promise anyone the position, but we'll give everyone who applies a good look as we'd love to have someone from the community working on the project with us.
We have got some REAL talent in this pool of folks... Unfortunately, I am not one of them...
That is cool that you would even consider these guys!!!!

Me and Igard will just sit here and root the other talented folks on...

October?! TOLD YOU SO!
Anyways, excellent news! Been wondering where you've been Erik. Too bad that I'll probably have too much stuff to do to apply to the beta test. Would certainly have loved to. Can't wait for more info though.
EDIT: @Facedrop I was thinking the same thing, but don't really know how busy Woodman is. I would certainly love to see his stuff in the expansion.

That's great that the expansion is coming along. However, it's difficult for me to be ecstatic about this when the game isn't even bug-free currently and is in a state that I, and I believe the average gamer, would not be too happy with.
It's been 5 months now since the last patch that brought up some bugs (at least one of them being major). And 2 months now since it was mentioned that these would be fixed. How is that coming along?

data, given what's happening in the UK, allusions to forming mobs is probably not too appropriate. ...recharging VISA....applying financial cloaking device from wife...setting countdown web timers...
ORIGINAL: Facedrop Wow a community member working on the expansion... Based on Woodman's work on diverse world's, perhaps he is the man for the job.
I was trying to think who it was... but yes... that would be good... AND Kalthaniell is good as well...

Kalthaniell or Woodman get my vote as well. I was thinking about it, but I don't have the skills that Woodman or Kalthaniell have, those two have mad skills when it comes to in game art. I might be able to make a decent shipset, but not at the quality those two are capable of.
ORIGINAL: ehsumrell1 Igard and myself BOTH beta testing!!!! Oooh, sorry, just couldn't handle that thought for a moment!
Are you two really? Good for you. Data would be good as well...

Character assasination here, bashing and all sorts of bad things Seriously now, not only do I have a little kid but we're also moving into a new house so I barely have the time to check the forum atm....not to mention the obvious fact that I'm not at all qualified for this I mean if Igard considers himself not good enough than very few of us are. I was also ready to throw in three names at the start of this thread so if Woodman and Kalthaniell were already mentioned that I'll mention RisingSun. If any of them could do it, we'll all have a more beautiful game.

I was trying to think of something clever to say... like 'that is what the wife is for' (which would get me killed here in the United States), but yes, your plate is full and the wife and little one are the priority... No more Orion raids for you!

Since Swords of the Stars II is coming out on September 20th, do you think October release might be not a good time? I would think many space strategy gamers might be busy playing SOTS II and I know I will be playing SOTS II for couple months before moving on.

It's fine. I will compare and contrast the two. SOTS II system recommends scares the hell outta me...I'm still running Vista on 32bit. I have a 1/2 gig geforce 8800 card and 3 gigs of ram. I'm not sure how well my rig will do against that game, but I'm gonna find out! I'm really looking forward to both of these games as well as the expansion to Elemental and Sins. Maybe strat gaming is coming back!!!!!

I like US, they only kill you there for this. Here they torture you before they kill you....than they bring you back and do it again....and not once divorce you in the process.

Laughing so hard I am drawing a crowd around me here...
Data, that is how you know your wife loves you: murder and torture are both possibilities , but they love you so much they would NEVER divorce you.

I meant that with a certain amount of irony. But I am a believer in the commitment of marriage... Be thankful for what you have... many would pay dearly for what you have...

ORIGINAL: Data I can start the bigest ranting ever on this off topic but even I have my limits so I'll only agree strongly with you.
My apologies; shan't happen again. And with that I think I am going to shut my yap a while...

Hi guys,
Here's something from the alpha (as in not yet beta, so please consider it work in progress) to keep you busy. Just to guide the discussion a bit, the large colored areas are spheres of influence. Spheres of influence are not quite the same as the way we think of "borders" here on our planet. They project from your colonies and define the space that you could control. Systems within your sphere of influence that you have at least explored are considered under your control. Borders in space are enforced within each controlled system but not in the deep space between systems. Also, building a mining station (for example) outside of your sphere of influence does not give you control over that system (though colonizing it does). Diplomacy has been overhauled to allow the negotiation of mining and refueling rights within your controlled systems, among other improvements.
There are a few other things you may spot in this screenshot.
Also, regarding ongoing support, we are very much aware that another update for ROTS is desired and it will arrive before the next expansion is released.
