The AI is significantly improved (especially in Diplomacy and Fleet Handling) and there is now a separate Difficulty Slider.

Erik:

1) What more can you tell us of the AI improvements? I suspect many would have bought an expansion for AI improvements alone.

2) I've resigned myself to not expect any game balance mods for Distant Worlds. Its a pity the developers haven't recognised the extra units they could have sold off the back of extensive community mods and game balancing. Perhaps with Distant Worlds 2 the code can be written from the ground up with modding in mind by externalising the game variables.

Legends looks to be a worthy expansion that I eagerly await. Thank you for keeping the community informed of its progress.

Been lurking lately, but the latest news are good. Real good.
I seriously need to get back to playing DW, and my current SR2 game, soon. Maybe after couple of DE:HR playthroughs...

Anyways, all those new things sound excellent and should really make the game more varied. Hopefully the new enhanced AI can keep up with the new things too.

Man, this is sounding better and better.

With every post by Erik, more items are ticked off the wishlist.

But I must ask, will we be seeing new weapons systems e.g mass drivers?

Based on this thread there is a solid chance that I'll buy DW: Legends. The character system (one of my favorite aspects of the Total War series) and the sphere of influence stuff are major sellers.

With the hint of externalized variables we seem to be getting one step closer to what is by far my biggest wishlist item: component modding. I haven't played DW in about 4 months largely because I can't mod a whole new scheme of weapons techs into my Babylon 5 and Star Wars games.

Rail Guns are in, one of my favorites, but also phased beams (cutting lasers), more advanced missiles, and a bunch of other stuff.

- Erik

Okay, can someone point me in the direction of what a 'rail gun' is.
I have seen it in a couple of SF series... never knew what it was...

I first met them as mass drivers but here is a good starting place for a more elaborate definition -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun

"Velocitas Eradico", which they translate as "Speed Destroys" but can more accurately be translated "I am speed and I destroy," or similar.

Railgun: When you want to snipe them 200% dead.
No SciFi game is complete without some railguns.

Rail guns are in existence today, though only in the experimental phases.

For the most basic layman's description...the barrel is a tube of high powered electromagnets that accelerate a metal slug to incredible speeds. The muzzle velocity is easily enough to hurl a 6" projectile in excess of 70nm (for reference, you standard 6" naval gun of WWII had a ~15nm range).

Hope that helps without getting too technical.

Cool! Can't wait to try out some phaser beams.

Ed, you're perfectly welcome in the cargobay any time, just pop round, we'll share an ale. That's if the pale, bearded one keeps his android hands off my supply!

Looks like there's a bit of  a delay on the beta, but that's ok. We're not in any rush, right guys? Let's go for a xmas release, I say.

Thanks for the invite Igard! You're welcome in the Briar Patch at any time as well!

Yes, if we want a Xmas release, I would love to have a good couple months at it with all
the new things Erik has thrown out there. Trust me, there will be a lot of things to look at!
But we'd do it mate!

(Invite Data too....but he needs to deactivate his emotion chip first if we're near ale!)
