Alfred its good to see you back in my AAR.  Thanks for your info and comments

1.  Ok.  I can pull in more troops what would you suggest.  I am afraid of the overstacking penalty.

I thought 4Es had to operate from a Lv 4 AF?

I didn't think of Eniwetok.  I am now looking at it.

After some time off from the holidays.  We are now back on.

1st Apr

KB Gilberts
MKB unknown

China
We set up a fighter ambush.  We downed around 10 Oscars to 5 P 40Bs 5 P 39s.  I am thinking that more than that was shot down after watching the replay.

Chang Mai
We destroy 5 oscars on the ground.  Several 2E bombers were destroyed on the ground also.  Tom a sweep of Hurries and more bombers will appear here.

Bativia
Delib attack by the Japs.  1110 Caus for them and 555 for us.

Onotoa
Amphib landing.  We shot up 2 xAKLs real bad, 2 AKs.  An AMC and CL take a single hit.  The landing and shock attack cost him 2,500 to my 200.  He landed 4 Nav Guard units with 1 SNLF.  I am evacing small sections of the units here and flying in some Inf.

Ok, so the bonus period for Japan has ended.  Lets welcome him into the new era here guys.

It is a sad day.  I have been with this forum for a little over a year now.  I did not know DivePac or Herwin very well.  But feel something is missing here now.  I spend alot of time on here reading AARs, OT threads, and so on.  I have enjoyed it.  I look forward to it.  I would always read the posts by these two gentlemen.  One I could understand easily the other made me think to much.  But both only wanted the best for our game here.  As do most of us.  Let us take a min to rememeber them and from that and them take out a little bit more respect and love to our forum brothers that are still here.

To all who will read this thanks for your help, imput and so on.

I will miss DivePacs Avatar and Herwins intellectual thoughts.

Thanks Roger and welcome.  Any thoughts or comments are welcome.  This is a free speaking AAR.

2 Turns to update.  Not very good for us in the Air.

2-3 Apr

KB Gilberts
MKB unknown

Onotoa
Falls to the Japs.

Bativia
Falls to the Japs.

Chang Mai
Terrible day here.  We lose 5 B17Ds, 22 Brit 2Es, and 16 Hurri IIa,bs.  Koniu lost 10 Zeros, 8 Oscars, 6 Sallys and 2 Anns.

I really like what Alfred mentioned earlier about landing on Eniwetok Is.  I will start prepping units here.

I have to withdraw 2 Hurri units from Rangoon.  Not good.  P38s are making there way into China as we speak. Most of the islands in the Pacific will have DBs and fighters soon.

My invasion of the northern Gilberts will start after an offensive for either PM or in Burma.  I want to pull the KB away from here.  I might be able to handle them in Burma best.  Well not handle but absorb the punishment better.

Subs who are on there way back to there assigned ports to rearm and refuel will stop and upgrade.

2 Days to update.

KB Solomons
MKB unknown

Nothing happening besides logistics.  Koniu is bombing and sweeping me all over.

I am still puzzled why Koniu has not entered Burma.  I will move in a few more brigades to improve some of my flanks.  I should start getting some more AC and better AC.  In this area.  So maybe then I will be able to win back the air over my bases.

3 of my US carriers are upgrading on the WC.  There AC are on land training.  They are also bring in new pilots for training.

China is still quiet except for the Air War.  I need to start muffleing him.

Java is falling into the Japs hands.  Half the Island is in the Jap hands.

You know I am a newbie DOCUP but one thing I am doing while upgrading my CV's and that is usng the now land based TB's to do ASW work. So far the Avengers have damaged 2 IJN subamrines patrolling Pearl Harbor. The experince might be helpful as I use TB's to do ASW around my carriers while at sea .. until the moment of going into engagement mode.

There is one big disadvantage to the sea going ASW tactic .. if you do encouter a submarine they get a sighting and it is easy to figure out carrier borne aircraft types and being at sea .. on the other hand I doubled back on this by flying Avengers off Canton Island [lots of subamrines] while moving the CV's around Ndeni .. worked long enough while training my IJ opponent to outsmart himself At the very least TB's experinced at ASW has helped me get out of submaine infested waters by detecting these little buggers first ..

Just a thought ..

Crackaces  I am useing DBs for that from carriers.  Both the Navy and Marines have the same DBs.  So if there is an Island close by it will be hard to tell the difference.

Another 2 turns to tell you about.

KB between Cairnes and PM
MKB unknown

Cairnes and Townville
KB sweeps both and meets my P39s.  We get roughed up 22 P39s go down with 6 Zeros.  If he sweeps tom or attacks he will find alot more than the P39s.  I also flew in some TT bombers and some Low nav bombers.  This is our first real chance to hurt the KB.  I am not holding anything back on this one.

Burma
3 TFs are heading to Moulmeim.  TT bombers are in the area now.

China
Fighter trap set up.

Ambon

Got the combat replay back.  Looks very good for us.

We loose 1 tanker and 4 Dutch PT boats.  He loses an AK and a small PB.  The air war is were we won.  I think.  By watching the replay we shot down 66 and damaged around 30.  Will have to wait and see what we lost.

KB between Carines and PM

Air war results

I rewatched the replay and jotted down numbers and such.

Zeros shot down by replay 22  Zeros shot down by Intel Screen 15
Oscars shot down by replay 2  shot down by Intel Screen 3
Lily's shot down by replay 35  Shot down by IS 51
Sallys shot down by replay 7 Shot down by IS 4

I know results are suppose to be more accurate by replay.  I was bored waiting on the actual turn.

The Oscars, Lily's, and Sallys all went down in China.  Zeros were at Carines or Rangoon.

We lost 8 Fulmars, 4 Vildebeasts, 4 P40E, 4 P39, 4 B17E, 3 Hurri IIb, 1 KittyHawk Ia.  Not to bad if I say so.

Plans

Rangoon
I am pulling most of my AC out of China to help defend Rangoon.  I want to make this bloody.  He has 120 Fighters and 100 bombers at Chang Mai.  Troops are unloading at Moulmeim.  Intel says more are being shipped to Tavoy.    I have a CL SAG moving towards this area now.  So far it is unseen.  I am waiting on more AC to come from other parts of India.  I am trying to get LCUs in position to keep them from flanking Rangoon.  I will put up a fight here but I am not attached to anything here.

Gilberts
I see two Jap TFs at Onatoa.  My 2 DD TF took out a PB here and did not get attacked by any air.  I am moving my CVTF into the area to engage these 2 TFs.

Real air strikes today.  We sink CL Yubari and an AK.  We have 3 AKs and an AP with heavy damage/fires.  Over 1,000 Japs drowned.  Carriers will withdraw and our SAG will mop up the rest today.  I believe this was an IR.  Koniu told me they were going home.

Not much going on.

Burma
I am moving some units south from India.  I have set up a sweep and 2 fighter traps.  I am wondering will he come for this area.  Or will he sit back and fortify the bases he has.

So looking at the AC lost list.  I am actually ahead here.  Japs 1427 to 1409.  I also see and this is with FOW 11 DDs, 3 CLs, CA, CS have been sunk on the Jap side.

I thought 4Es had to operate from a Lv 4 AF? ...

Sorry for the delay in responsding, I've had other things to do.

(a) The overstacking penalty is really only a long term consideration. For atolls the objective is always to crush the opposition in the initial shock attack with the organic supply carried by the landed troops (plus any offloaded in the initial landing). In an atoll invasion it is a bad sign to be dependent on dropping off additional supply in subsequent turns. Thus it is is not an issue if after you have captured the atoll you are over the stacking limit provided the intention is to. get the excess troops off the atoll. The fact that the attacker can effectively overlook the stacking limits is why relying on maintaining a perimeter of atoll outposts for defense is doomed in AE unless the defender has control of the sealanes and air.

(b) 4Es can operate even out of a level 2 airfield. However the too small airfield penalties apply to any Level Bomber which operates out of an airfield which is smaller than [4 + aircraft max load/6500]. As all Allied 4E bombers have a max load of >6500, this means to avoid the small airfield penalties a minimum size 5 airfield is required (size 7 in the case of the B-29).

Therefore even flying out of Wake Island, your 4E would suffer the small airfield penalty but even so, if the target is Eniwetok (as I suggested in the post) you would still be better off flying the 4E from Wake against Eniwetok than against your original nominated targets. This is because the too small airfield penalty reduces the ordnance flown to be the same as that flown on extended range missions. However the 4E out of Wake against Eniwetok would still be flying within their normal range and thus operational losses and wear and tear on the pilots and airframes would be less whereas it would be higher if flown out of Wake against the original nominated targets.

2 Turns to update about

KB unknown

Onatoa
Our SAG ran into the survivors of amphib TF.  We sank a DD.  So that  means we also sunk an AP and 3 AKs.  An IR went down with those ships.

Moulmein
We swept here with P38s and P40Es.  We knock down 12 Oscars while loseing 1 P38 and 3 P40s.

Not much else going on around the map.

Alfred no need to be sorry.  Again your schooling me about the game.  Thank you for this info.

4E port raid.  We put 3 500 pound bombs into an AV and 2 into an AKL.

SS Thresher puts an exploding TT into an AKL sinking it.

Outside Changsha
15 units moving towards my blocking force on the road from Wuchang.  I have 4 Corps behind 4 forts in wooded terrain.  AV is 760.  I am moving more Inf, AT and Art units to this hex.    There are 6 IJ divs tied up in different hexs around China.  I don't know what forces Japan has in China.  I might look and see if I can start a fight somewhere else and make him think twice about this move.  Ichang might be my best spot for a counter offensive.

Burma
Intel shows 2 Divs prepping and moving towards Rangoon.  I have 4 forts with 800 AV here.

Moulmein
9 units are present.

Java
4 IJ Divs are here marching on Soerabaja.  I have 3 forts with 400 AV.

PM has a Div present as does Rabaul.  Intel also says there are a couple Divs in the HI.

I haven't seen the MKB for a long time.  I wonder where it is and what his plans are for it.

Changsha
The hex outside Changsha has 15 units in with 7 more moving to it.  I have stopped my other units from reinforceing this hex.  The units in this hex does not stand a chance againist the stack of doom coming at it.  We will stand and fight in Changsha.   Changsha has 1930 AV behind 4 forts.  Art, AT, AAA units are present.  More AV is on the way to Changsha.  I might be able to pull in close to 4,000 AV to Changsha.  I don't know what Koniu has brought to the party yet.

Nanchang
8 units are moving north towards Changsha.

Moulmeim
12 units are present here.

Chang Mai
14 units are present here.

All bombers have been moved from my reconned bases in Burma AO.

CBI AO is going to heat up.  I don't expect to hold Rangoon, but I will put up a fight for it.  I would like to hold Changsha.  I expect both places to bloody the Japs.

Fort #2 is delib attacked by the Japs.  They achieve 8 to 1 odds.  Our forces retreat.  We suffer 5,340 to there 2,480.  Koniu bought the hammer on this one.  8 IDs, 4 mixed Bdes, 1 tank rgt, and 2 armored car companys.  Our troops retreated back to Changsha with only 250 AV.  This stack of doom is moving towards Pingsiang.  He is threatening to cut off 4 Chinese LCUs, they will fall back.

SS Truant gets attacked while on patrol just north of Singers.  Amphib TFs are moving up the slot towards George Town.  Maybe she will get a shot off at one of them.

You have yourself a nice chess game in China. Lucky for you though he is so concentrated. He is not trying to cut off Kukong and hes leaving you alone in the north. I am in touble in China as much from manouver as from brute force. The road net connecting Mao's forces to Chang's sucks. I am trying to rebuild the Red Chinese and slip them south, but now in mid November, supplies really suck to. Watch for a chance to cut him off, wish I could offer some advice, but its my first time this deep in the campaign and I am feeling around in the dark.

Zulu I feel the same.  I'm just trying not to screw myself to bad.

I am looking for away to encircle his forces.  I am also looking to start a small offensive somewhere else.  Maybe Ichang.  I have almost 2,000 AV 100% prepped for Ichang.  I think he has a reg ID and one of those weak Chinese IDs present plus engs.  I am flying my fighters back into the area may take another day or so to get them into position.

Burma
He has not moved his forces towards Rangoon or anywhere else.  He is prob waiting to get all his ducks in a row.  I am preparing my defensive along the coast of N Burma an India (Akyab to Chittagong).  They all have CD guns, engs, and Inf LCUs. I am expecting him to try and do an amphib landing once he goes after Rangoon.

I am trying to passively recon areas of interest.

Ndeni
I have a sub in the same hex, but no LCUs are showing.  I haven't seen any forts or AFs built here.  I have some recon plans heading this way will have to take a peek here.

North Gilberts
I am a long ways away from any type of offensive here.  So I figure I could get away with a small peek.  I am trying subs first.

PM
Active recon will be done here.  He knows I will come for it.  Maybe I will maybe I won't.  This all depends if he takes Ambon.

Ambon
Still in Dutch hands.  If he dosen't take it, I may start an offensive here.  But time will tell.

Jap divs
8 are outside Changsha
1 Ichang
1 PM
1 PI
2 heading towards Rangoon
4 Java
1 Rabaul
several HI.

The rest of the map is pretty quiet.

B17Ds and the Chinese bombers hit the AF mod damage.  13 planes caught on the ground and destroyed.  I am planing ground attacks at Ichang and one of the LCUs in the open.  I have to be carefull and not bomb away all my supplies.

Ichang
Units are moving here.  A counter offensive is starting finally.

All Jap AFs are stationed with fighters close to 180 in all.  I am switching my fighters to train mode.  I do not want them to get caught in a massive sweep.

Forgot to mention a few things.

The soldiers at Cayagan PI have roughed up a Jap IR.  Now a Jap Div has taken its place and is attacking our soldiers.  So far they are holding there own but supplies are low.

The US just graduated over 100 pilots with A2A above 65 and Def above 65 and Exp above 50. I have 32 pilots in the reserves with 70 and 70 (a2a and def).

Another fighter trap set by us.  Over 100 Jap planes go down to our 23.  I will have to watch the replay again to really break it down.  Jap units are now moving in all directions around Changsha.

PM
S 39 hits a mine.   She is in trouble.  Cruise speed has been set to closest port.

Ndeni
Has one LCU present.

I still hold Ambon.  I should of been building up Timor and Ambon, but I wrote that area off.  If I get to hang on to it I a big gift here.  I am going to try and reinforce this area.  It will take me awhile,  But if I can keep it I can either drive up to PI or hit his oil fields.

Also I think I will hold off on PM and go after the islands south of it.  I will cut his forces off from supply.

More later have to go eat with the folks.  nice HQ Zulu

Jap TF is at the Hex.  A CL TF will go full speed to this hex overnite and attack (hopefully).

Ndeni
No attacks by our bombers.  Maybe tom.  CL TF is heading thaty way I put them on full speed but I think they will be a hex short.

Kurlies
We TT an AP with troops.  I have a surface raider TF close by I will send them into the area.  Maybe they will get lucky.

Its getting lonely again guys.  Do I need to hire my own twits, to bump up my visitation and talkitation (GJism) in this thread.

So he is reinforceing Ndeni.  I have 1 fully prepped US ID, 2 partially prepped tank Bns, SVC det, and an art unit.  I am thinking of bringing in another.  So should I?

I have a US ID moving towards OZ now its prepping for PM.  I'm thinking of taking it north to the Timor region.  Correct me if my thinking is wrong here.  If I can hold Ambon and the Timor region it is a big coup.  I'm thinking start working my way north to the PI and be able to cut off DEI.  Thats when I am strong enough.
