Nells come in at night but hit nothing.  This is the first airstrike from the Solomons.  Almost everything is unloaded.  I am starting to pull ships out of the area.  I have another op getting ready to start and need the ships.

Missed oppurtunity here.  24 unescorted Nells came in they missed all ships, but I had let the carriers go.  Dang

APDs drop off some troops.

Ambon
Bombed by both of us.  Koniu attacks the port and AFs.  We go after troops.  Neither of us do much damage.

I am having a hard time engaging Koniu's fighters except on his terms.  I will start a bombing compaign that will make him bring his fighters up on CAP.  He doesn't have CAP over his bases or troops.  Time to make him pay.

Allied fighter sweeps.  Hurris IIb's, IIc's, and P38s sweep. Over 60 Oscars are there. 14 Oscars are shot down to 5 Hurri IIc's, 4 IIb's, and 4 P38s.  Not a good show on our part.  I was hopeing for more out of the IIc's.  Ops screen says Boyington shot down 2 for his 7th kill but pilot screen still has him listed at 5 kills.  Night bombing doesn't do much to the AF.

Ambon
Small TF either lands troops or supplys.  3 LBs and a PB are seen in this TF.  the 3 LBs are tore up by CD guns.

Not much more seen or done.  I was hopeing for more kills from the sweeps.  My 4 Es need a few more days of rest before they can take on 60+ Oscars.

3 Ops are being planned.  2 of which are kinda off the wall.  I am holding off on talking about them just yet want to get forces into place and watch my intel.

Darwin
xAP gets hit with a TT from a Betty north of Darwin.  Only 2 Marletts fly to defend this TF.  2 Bettys shot down 2 ops losses. Minor damage to the xAP.

NorPac
Gar dudes on an AKL 13 hexs south of Attu.  AKL must have high systems it was smoking in the replay.

Tokyo
Halibut misses a nice size TF.  2 other TFs are seen but not engaged they are heading east hmm.  Is this his routing or are these TFs heading towards NorPac?

Bombings and the usual.

Question
I remember reading that it takes 8 xAPs and xAKs to load a Div.  Is this correct?  I know APs and AKs unload faster.  I am setting up my invasion forces and want to unload as much as I can in one day.  I do plan on putting some APs and AKs in the invasion TF.

I plan for 400 per day 200 per phase for xAP/xAK's and ..

"Regular Transport Ships. (Commissioned Naval AP/AK) in Amphibious TFs, unload at a Rate of 600 points per ship per turn." So load 1200 points per ship and its unloaded by midnight the next night :)

At Pearl I find 8 AP's of the 2200 troop size and 4 AK's fit on the dock to get everything loaded into one TF .. then the whole division gets off all one one swoops .. worked for me at least :)

Jap sub sinks a good xAK.  Been awhile since one has operated in these waters.  ASW efforts have been increased.

46 4Es strike the ground troops.  64 KIA recored.  I am dissappointed in these results, Jap bombers do better with less.

Got 36 P38s today.  I am working on getting them into the pools.  I have 12 in now and tomorrow I should have 12 more.  I think I will send these guys to Darwin.  I can use some range and offensive punch.

Looking around I spotted one of my RAF HQ LCUs. They have been running thru the jungle for a long time now. They still have there TTs. I bet those guys are happy

What is the target hex, weather, skill/ accuracy etc of the groups?

I have had ~46 4E's strike @8000 in clear terrain, clear weather, 50% accuracy, 70 skill, unopposed by flak or CAP and take out 500~ .. I have struck @ 10,000, rain, rough/jungle, 40% accuracy, 50 skill ... and took out 40 ..lots of variables ..

IMHO) The solution for the IFFB's is not to bork ground bombing with house rules.. but to avoid defending/attacking clear terrain without air superiority. I have had excellent results attacking IJA units moving in the open, no flak, no air cover with 4E's ...

I am no Alfred ... but note your shore batteries are 6" guns ... and the CL's were mauled ..

Note this ..

172 Coastal gun shots fired in defense

then

199 Coastal gun shots fired in defense

So not only did the CL/DD's act as a sponge, but did not have the fire power to supress the shore batteries as more shots fired on the second phase than the first ..even with the CL firing at the guns ..

I have a CL hit by a 5" gun and it is 7 sys .. those 6" shells [150mm CD Gun Battery engaging DD Makigumo at 12,000 yards ] I would say did something like 10 maybe 15 sys to Makigumo . having not seen the animation and observing any critical hits ..the fires I understand continnue to do damage to IJ ships at a faster rate than the USN?

Just a couple of thoughts ..

Thanks Crackaces.  Yes, I know those 6 in guns ripped him apart.  I did see some fire and critical damage on a few ships.  I now have 2 DDs reported sunk.  I don't know about the fires doing more damage to IJN than USN.  I can only hope.

Massive sweep by the Japs 136 Oscar Ic and 12 Ib (haven't seen that one in the war before).  We lose 15 to his 12.  Not bad.

Bombarded by 2 Jap CA's, bombed, delib attacked.  We aren't doing very well here. Tom we are bombarding, bombing but not attacking.  Lets hope we can kill some of Koniu's troops here.

Rangoon
I have been able to sneak a DD TF close enough to attack a 4 ship ASW TF.  This will be an open water intercept so let hope the hit it and run.  I do have some LRCAP if they can get back to it.

We bombard at night.  Koniu bombards during the day. We both bomb ground troops.  His Zeros take a beathing.  We lose 3 Beauforts, 9 Zeros are reported as Op loses.  We lose Lautem.

Rangoon
Our 2 DDs sink 3 SC's and they are still close to Rangoon.  I see another ASW TF 1 hex away.  I will divert them to attack them and then get the heck out of dodge.

Changsha
Oscars sweep again but this time they come in smaller groups and pay for it.

Akyab
Oscars sweep and meet Hurri IIb's.

Air war total today. 37 total Oscar Ic's, 9 Zero's, several recon planes to 7 P40Es, P40Bs, Hurri IIbs, 3 Beauforts and what was left of the Dutch AF stationed at lautem.

Tomorrow we will smack Koniu in the face with a wet fish.    This TF has been waiting here for about a week for a TF to come by.  Its time to attack.  This should make him mad.

Technically fires on ships do the same damage to both sides. What is different is the Allies have better damage control parties (if it was toggled on at start) who can fight the fires better. The longer it takes to put out a fire the greater the odds that it will spread and cause more serious damage.

Regarding the land combat situation on Timor. Try using only one unit to bombard instead of the entire stack. That way you conserve supply for your own forces, allows for the other units a better opportunity to recover morale/disruption etc and is just as efficient in dishing out disuption etc to all the enemy units which are in defend mode. The potential disadvantage is if it results in the enemy having a distinct advantage in artillery tubes engaging in counter battery fire, you could suffer more casualties to the unit.

Alfred

Edit: forgot to mention. Nice move on Shikkuka. Although in future you might be better off sending only DDs rather than a mixture of cruisers and destroyers.

Thanks Alfred.  Long Time No See.  Hope all is well with you Alfred.

Folks, I have been thinking.  Yes, it is scary.  I think its time to pull out of Darwin.  He now has 3 AFs within fighter range of Darwin.  I won't be able to get supplys in or keep ships safe anymore.  I think it will cost more than I have in the area to resecure those bases.  But I may be wrong.  If I am tell me now, so I can get moving on it.

I should of kept with my plan to fortify that area from the begining.  If I would of then things would of been different.  Another newb mistake.  I can supply Ambon by sub like I have been.  She should be able to hold out for awhile unless he brings in more LCUs.  I am just now building up Bathurst Is.

Just to let you know what I have in Darwin and around.  2 CA TFs, 1 CV (Brit) TF.  Alot of subs.  7 Fighter squadrons 12 bomber squadrons.  I have 3 brigades 28% prepped for Saumlaki 2 tank units 30% prepped for it also.  I have enough transports to drop them off.  But not enought fighter support to protect them.   I have an ID prepping for Koepang.

So tell me your thoughts guys.  I think I can come back to this area in the future but right now, it seems like a loseing fight.

B17Es attack the AF.  Oscars try to defend it.  In total 17 Oscars are lost to 8 B17Es.  Fighters didn't sweep this AF.  Things might of been different here.

Koepan
Japs are reinforceing here.

I am getting alot of reports of my ASW AC attacking and hitting subs. I got 2 reports of it this turn. I-19 has been reportedly hit over 20 times by 500 pounders.

more later

What I have found is that the tide ebbs and flows .. one turn the IJ rule like you losing some B-17's then another turn he loses a bunch of stuff. In my game .. back to back turns .. the IJ get a good lick in and I totally fail to execute my plan next turn .. his Betty's get compeltely stomped eliminating a whole squadron .. ... stay with it ..

But I do try and get some successful sweeps in first before bombing . if only to reduce the numbers if the bombers show up unescorted ...

Crackaces,  Your right, I wasn't ranting.  I expect it to happen.

20th July

KB unknown
MKB off Derby.

Derby
Koniu sends in a SAG made up of 2 CAs and 2 DDs.  He meets 2 of our TFs consisting of a CL and 2 DDs each.  Koniu lost a DD (Probably) we lose 2 CLs and 2 DDs.  He says he will be back.  I see another TF coming towards Derby.  I have scrapped together a hodge podge group of ships to help defend Derby.  3 AMCs only one has 6 in guns.  2 DDs are patroling but low on ammo and fuel.  I am rushing a CA led TF to Derby they will prob meet this Jap TF after it attacks my cannonfodder.

Ambon
Japs try to sweep my minefields.  They pay for it.  2 DMS's take hits from our CD guns and an SC hits a mine.

more later

2 turns to talk about.

21st and 22nd July

KB unknown
MKB north of Derby

Derby
Our 2 CA SAG meets a 3 BB SAG off Derby.  Not good.  We lose both CAs and maybe 2 DDs.  I don't think we sunk anything.  We damaged his ships but not that bad.

Nanyang
Small air engagement.  We lose 2 Lancers for 1 Oscar.

Port Morsby
We sink an ACM in a port strike.

Will have to rethink my plans now.
