Status: offline 		I would also be leery about Suva, for the same reasons as Noumea: forward base, exposed to enemy envelopment, and the enemy has more than one base to land at, making use of CD guns problematic.

I defended Fiji in my games against Q-Ball and Miller, because circumstances permitted me to do so (mainly, my opponents were occupied elsewhere, which bought me the needed time to really make defense possible and worthwile). I did not defend Fiji in my game with Chez Da Jez, because he moved quickly into SoPac, taking it before I could organize a defense that made sense.

Through mid 1942, Japan can choose where it wants to go and the Allies have little chance of stopping them (except at the major bastions, of course, includng Pearl, West Coast, Oz, and India). However, the Japanese can't go everywhere. Thus, for the Allies, it is a bit of a dance - identifying where Japan is going, slowing Japan down when possible, and taking advantage of places where Japan isn't to build some good bases.

In most games, I would identify key forward bases that I will try to garrison at the outset - in most games I'm going to immediately focus on some of the Aluetians, Pearl Harbor, Christmas Island, Tahiti and probobly Pago Pago. Decisions about other important Pacific bases including Fiji, New Caledonia, and even New Zealand, are postponed a bit until the situation develops enough to permit analysis and good decision making.

As for Lunga, Port Moresby, and Luganville? Forget them, unless I'm facing a newcomer or I'm feeling particulary robust, feisty, and "devil-may-care".

Status: offline 		Koumac is 19 hexes from Tulagi and thus one hex too far to bomb using B-17's or B-24's .. but .. if Ndeni or Luganville should fall it can be attacked by a Level 7 airfield [meaning lots of stuff ..] . Also Lunga, Kirkira are in range if they develop into bases .. just sort of the thought process for me to develop New Caladonia early .. Feburary 1942 .. its almost May and these bases are the foundation of my next moves ..

But CR has a great point. I read his AAR dozens of times to pick up nuances in operational execution of his strategy. No way could I execute what he did .. and thus if I tried I would fail .. I think that is his advice .. do what you can imagine because you have to execute the operations and tatics which might not be straightforward.

My line of thinking relative to New Caladonia and Ndeni.
1) use of "rebuildable" units (are all units destroyed in combat rebuildable?) to establish far better early warning for the "depots" down south to allow for quick evac of vulnerable shipping and naval air assets.
2) A slightly reinforced version to channel Jap Naval assets into longer approach routes into SoPac.
3) If bypassed by a "superior player type" would it not force him into escorting everything into SoPac forcing him to use oilers etc.?

I have very little experience with the game (102 PBEM turns to be exact) so I really would entertain a no bull#$%^ assessment from an old tar of just how easy would it be by a competent Jap to bypass and more importantly neutralize a base in his sea lanes defended in re-inforced Rgt strength. And how long could one hope to "delay" this. The amphib bonus will be gone, he will have to prep? he would have to abort/delay expansion? Just questions......Zulu burning candle at both ends...sorry for hijack DOCUP, I see you thinking similarly. (wheres the spell check?!)

Status: offline 		Does CG1 = Campaign Game Scenario One? If so, the answer is yes. Even though Scenario One doesn't give Japan quite the punch it gets in Scenario Two, an experienced IJ player can still go where he wants to through mid 1942, subject to some exceptions as set forth above.

Status: offline 		Pardon me, DOCUP, for answering zulu's modified question. After I post this, I'll try to leave the topic alone and let you get back on track.

Japan can take what it wants early in the war. If Japan wants an island, it can isolate it, move forward, and come back for it later. Or it come come take it now. There is very little chance for the Allies to oppose successfully. If Japan wants it and brings enough, it will be Japans.

On the other hand, the Allies want to slow Japan, sting Japan, and build areas where opportunities exist (IE, building places the Japan isn't giving attention to while focused elsewhere). Thus, there can be reasons for the Allies to build at a dangerous base. Perhaps Japan is giving you the time and space to do so. Or perhaps you're trying to "confuse" and slow the enemy by creating a basiton that the enemy is forced to contend with. Or maybe you're just a tough son-of-a-gun that likes throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

Against an inexperienced IJ player, all bets would be off. Then, I would feel much more freedom to garrison, build, harrass and attack.

P.S. If you want advice from an "old salt," you'll have to dig around and hunt up JWE, Admiral Dadman, Speedy, Fabertong, or some of the genuine plank owners that go back to the early Uncommon Valor days. I'm just a young'n who is still svelte, supple, and winsome in a modest way. :)

Also Thanks for posting your thoughts and advise Please come back and keep posting.

i think that Noumea and New Cal are possible targets for Koniu.  These areas will be, if possible garrisoned later.  I have moved 2 AVPs into the area.  One at Koumac with 4 Cats and one at Ndeni with 4 Cats.

I did think about Garrisoning Noumea early.  CR got me to think about the idea.  Now I will work my way out to Noumea and other locations.  If given a chance or I think that I can do it.  I will make a play for Nomeau or New Calidonia.  I do and will take everyones advice seriously.  Yes we both are new to the game.  I want to have fun and I believe that Koniu wants to also.  I will take risks.  I've already done it and lost.  What I don't want to do is ruin a good game.  I am trying to learn from several AARs CRs, Nemos, GJs and others.  But I am learning more from my game and those who are posting here.  Alfred has opened my eyes to some game mechanics and other possible directions to take.  CR has done that also.  I will comment later on how these few posts has changed my thinking.

I decided to work my way out from PH to Oz.  I will focus on Christmas, Pago Pago, Fiji, Midway, Adak islands.  Once those reach my goals, I will move my forces to the next one and so on.  As CR as mentions if the Japs want and Island besides the main ones they can take it.  If Koniu expands to far thats good for me.  I will put up a fight for some places like Ambon, Port Morsby, Wake.  How much depends on what I can get to these places and how much I'm willing to lose.  I'm playing for fun.  I want to learn the game.  Give your advise or opinions.  I don't care what is said as long as it's kept civil.  Lets remember this is a game and its fun to play.

I think that I can get away with garrisoning Fiji early.  My thinking he hasn't moved into the Pacific yet.  I know he can move fast and if use correctly he can move fast after the landing bonus runs out.  Koniu is a smart guy.  I don't think he will overextend himself.  He will raid the area, but I doubt he will try and seriously take it.

I see where Crack and Zulu are coming from.  I have the same questions and ideas.  Now I get some answers to nagging thoughts.  Thanks for asking and answering guys.  Keep asking your not Hijacking if I don't care.

Thanks for the congrats.  My comment was to play AE on vacation.  Then she decided to bring her laptop to get on facebook.  Turn around is fair play.  You are a lucky man if your GFU will get on and reads the forum.  Mine tolerates me playing the game.  If you need to tell anyone that your getting engaged you can come here and post it.  If you don't mind me asking does she play the game?

Hes moved 2 more Divs and an IR to Chengchow.  I just started looking for the Divisions and stuff.  I need to look and see how many Divs he has and what units I need to look out for.

Malaya
AV came up to 790.  He did an art attack and lost more than we did.

DEI
His TFs left the area around Samarinda. He has a unit in the open with no forts.  I plan on pounding them. 
Taraken is still mine.  His troops must have been really disrupted because I have no combat forces there besides the overalwagons.
My CL TF ran into 3 DDs at Ternate.  One of his DDs to 3 hits was on fire another DD took one hit.  We suffered no loses.

All this talk got me thinking about some things.  I haven't really been paying attention or asking the right questions. 

Lets start here.  Palemburg I know he will come for it.  HMMM
Will he land at Pburg or will he land at Oosthaven or at Djambi.  He know that I have mined the route to Pburg.  He dosen't know if the other 2 bases are mine.  When will he come.  Before or after Singers falls.  Will the KB, mini KB, or LBA be there.  What do I have and how can it be employed againist him.  And why would I use it or care.

These are my questions right now in this area.  If my thinking is wrong please tell me.  I am not a person who reads between the lines and its hard to hurt my feelings. 

I think he will go after Oosthaven.  He will have Mini KB with LBA.  I think he will come after Bataan falls and he can use some of those troops.  I don't know what type of troops he has locations and stuff so I am pulling this one out of my arse.  Will I fight him.  Yes.  With what. I will have some Bombers DBs TBs with Fighters.  I will mine the bases.  I don't know if I will place ships in harms way.  Atleast surface ships.  Subs will be in the area.   We all know what troops are in the area.  They are gathered or will be at Pburg.  Why fight here.  Thats easy we all know that one.

Status: offline 		Djambi is not a port, so he can't land troops from the sea there. He can capture it via para landing.

Minefields show up when their MDL reaches 1. He won't know how many mines or what type are present, merely that there are mines. See s.10.4 of the manual for more details (also s.10.1.1.4).

Important point to remember is that Palembang is on a navigable river, so ships larger than 15k tons can't navigate the river.

Now how do I make Oosthaven more defendable. Hmmm

I do know that the river at Pburg has a size limit. That's why I wanted to get that British CD unit there. Those 6 inch guns could od done some damage. Now I find out the Padang base force has 2 five inch guns. I need to pay more attention. I know I can't keep anything in DEI. I wantto delay him and make him pay for his gains.

I will have the Brit Buffs and the Dutch planes. I will need to keep a pipeline open to Oz so I can get my planes out when it's time to get them out.

It is 36 hexes between Palembang and the Australian bases. If you don't keep several in between bases open you are going to find very little which will be able to fly out on its own steam.

At the bare minimum you are probably going to need an airfield on Java, one on Timor and probably one between the two islands, Then you are going to need some av support at the Australian end becuase those bases are not connected to the rail net.


If you want to learn how to play this game well, you cannot avoid paying attention to close detail. Above all else, logistics dominates.

Status: offline 		Yea,  I am moving some aviation support between Java and Timor islands.  I already have a pipeline in Oz to move my planes around.  The logistics is what I think I am doing better at.  Fighting the war not so well.  I've lost several good ships and alot of troops by not paying attention and bad operations.  The Boise and Houston are gone.  I really hated to lose the Boise.  I prob should of done a more Sir Robin style for my first game.  Oh well learn the hard way I guess. 

The game is immensely fun.  It's also nice to be able to get advise, comments, and stuff from your peers.

Status: offline 		Xnavy No don't really have the troops for a fortress Oosthaven.  Everything in DEI will belong to the Japs before too long.  So I am just doing a delaying action.  I was going to build up Timor but 2 troop TFs got chewed up by his surface raiders.  I will pull back to Northern Oz.   I looked at Timor a little different after Alfred mentioned it.  You would need alot of troops to try and hold Timor's bases.  Still if he wanted those bases he could take them.  I think its best to let the Jap player go where he likes in the begining, but throw up speed bumps and the like.  I didn't think this way at first, I wanted to be aggressive.  I figured I'd lose some ships and stuff but I also figured I'd have more to show for it.  I think that I am too green to do this correctly.

Status: offline 		Sitting here just thinking. There was no turn yesterday, that means to much time to think.

I think I will only send a Inf Bn to it the rest will go to Adak. I will also send in 12 P40Bs. I figure he will come after it sooner or later.

I'm seeing alot of intel of units moving to Turk. So he's getting ready to move into the Pacific. Still no signs of the KB. I am getting multiple heavy radio traffic messages at Turk and Tokyo.

Haven't mention Burma much. Rangoon is fort lv 3 with 770 AV. All bases are garrisoned to prevent airborne assualts. The more I think about it I will perform a fighting withdraw from this area. I have 27 AVG planes plus 14 Buffs, 16 Hurris are on there way. Koniu has started to recon the area and do some bombing runs. I am moving Indian forces to the border of Burma. The bases alnog the border are being built up. I am pay special attention. To the costal bases. I will base strong units in these.

I have 2 sqds of Hudon IIIa. Why am I so happy with these, as Alfred said these planes have radar. They will be used in the ASW role. I hate subs. I have around 10 pilots in the low 60s exp already. Once they hit 65 they will be set free to reek havoc on Jap subs. I only wish my American pilots would learn the ASW as fast. I did see that the kiwis have Hudson IIIa in service. I don't have anyone close to being ready to do ASW.

I'm almost ready to move 20 P38s out of the restricted units. I have a bunch of pilots with exp upper 50/60s, air inupper 60/70s, and def upper 50/60s. My best pilots will fly these. I will put them in a sqd that dosent withdraw. Hopefully I can get them to DEI before it's to late. That might slow him down some. The Dutch pilots are looking pretty good. I should be able to have 100 or so fighters in the area.

That hapends to me all the time .. I think it is on purpose to reward the player that can handle the most infinitesimal details This is not how I would program this behavior .. I would simply have an offload button that works like preperation .. click that and that is the port that if a destination the TF will unload .. pick up could work the same way .. then its not a bunch of clicks trying to get stuff to a "home port .." and refueling would be made much easier .......RANT=OFF

One of his RO subs hit an AK off of PM
One of my subs hit an AK off the coast of N Japan.  Others missed and AR, and a Big AP.

Singers, Bataan, Kukong and Chengchow all had bombardment attacks for 2 days.  He took Tarakan on the 8th. 

The big news is Gregory Boyington was shot down and killed over Rangoon today.  Today was a sad day for the AVG 30 AC lost 25 A2A and 5 to Ops.  Seven Buffs were lost over Rangoon also.  Japan lost 13 zeros, 2 nates, and 2 oscars.  Not all of these are A2A.  PI has only 3 planes left.  So the AVG will be quiet for a long time.  I have the P40s at 20,000 with Buff at 10,000(Rangoon).  the P40s in China were at 20,000 with Chinese Hawks at 8,000.  I will say he swept China with 55 zeros and 20 oscars.

I am currently looking for where all of his Divs are located.  I will post those later.

I was able to bomb the 113th IR at Samarinda on the 8th for 157 caus and on the 9th for 100 caus.

You might want to open up a campaign game as IJ player and jot down all divisision Japan gets during the first year of the game, which ones are unrestricted, and which ones are restricted.  (Or, you may prefer to play the game "blind," as it might add more uncertainty and excitement to the experience.)

Then, as you see or get SigInt about IJA divisions, you will begin to get a good picture as to where the enemy is going.  Also, once you have most divisions pinpointed, it tells you many things about where the enemy isn't...or isn't planning to go.

Tracker and other utlities may do this for you, but I don't use it/them, so I can't say.

I have embeded a picture below to show you how tracker handles this. If you track starting turn 1 it gives an excellent picture along with the preping orders like "1st Guards are prepping for Timbuktu .."

It is translatable into operations when you connect prepping to a movement order shown in CombatReports . Here I was able to put a raiding force in place and intercepted a Division heading to a Burmese Port ..

He sent 6 AMc's in 2 TFs of 3 into Bataans mine field.  Combat report  states that the first 3 hit 2 mines each and took 14 or so shots each.  The second TF took 14 to 16 shots each.  None are reported sunk.  I kinda doubt this.  I knew that the name list of sunk ships could be FOW. Can the intell screen with the number of ships sunk and points can it be FOW?

Delib attack  he suffered 5443 to my 1850.  He lost 7 Nells to my flak.

He has landed on Kaveing and Manus.

Delib attack he took 5673 to my 1885.  I have 2 forts left with over 1,000 AV.

Delib attack he took 5480 to my 2341.  I have 1 fort with 500 AV. 

Samarinda
6 Dutch PT boats scare off a DD and AP.  But they don't shoot at anything.

SoPac
He has taken Kaveing and Manus.  I am sorting a CA TF carefully towards the area.

My Cats have sited an amphib TF heading towards Wake.  2 days ago i had let the SAG start heading back to PH to refuel.  Now I have broke off a CL and 2 DD's to run back towards Wake. (carefully)  The rest of that TF is making its way towards Wake also.

Looks like we will have some action soon.

Status: offline 		Alfred,  lol.  I think the forum only has room for One Terminus.  I have not ever had a problem with him and don't mean any ill will towards hims.  But we only need one and no more of the To$ pictures.

Where oh Where is the KB and her evil little sister at.  I have heavy radio traffic at Turk, good possiblity.  I also have heavy radio traffic at Formosa and Samah.  So where is the Mini KB.  Is it up by Wake or is it somewhere close to DEI? 

The TF heading towards Wake is 9 hexs away so maybe 2 days.  My intell says 7 ships and I have 4 APs listed.  Hmm no SAG with it. 

I can't see Koniu not haveing the Mini KB around DEI.  He is real good about makeing several landings at once. 

Any thoughts folks.
