9 October 1944

Burma
Tavoy hold another day

Banda Sea
Allied invasion move north. Today they take position South West and South East of Saumlaki. I see less carriers but today i see Battleships and first time Landing Ships. Lot of LCI, APA, AKA reported
Potential target Ambon/Namlea

Interesting thing: You see two pictures first is one made during replay lower picture after turn solution. As You can see Docup move and auto disband ships in Gorong. I am suspecting Surface Combat TF.

I decided that i will fight. Planed strike is 48h from now.
Plan is already in my head. I am sure that i will not look for 8 hex strike.

I have 20 subs in Banda Sea six more will join tomorrow

It is Gorong circled.
Kaimana is that base East of Gorong and south of Babo

I thought you were referring to the anchor symbol at Kaimana.

I was referring that i saw two TF (reported as 10 ships size by search planes) but they where gone when i look at map after replay. Logically that mean i don`t see them because they disband in port. and becouse i dont have DL on base so i dont see anchor symbol but they are there

PS. During combat replay You never see anchor or AF symbol. They are only visible when you doing orders.

He could also have run combat ships in and they retreated after not finding combat. Depends on if your picture is before or after naval movement, but if it's after would they have already disbanded?

Picture is made during day PM phase. So they cant move. If he set Gorong as home base and order to auto disband, TF will always disband at end of day.

That makes sense.

Actually the last part is incorrect though. Or had been a few years ago during my first PBEM against Dan Nichols. He got many of the ships out of Pearl so my day two strike hit nothing but flak. They made it to other Hawaiian islands and disbanded before the air phase (obviously) or they would have been creamed.

For ships to disband in port, they need to get there in the first naval movement phase, if they arrive after they won't disband until next turn.

I have lost several ships to this particular feature...

This would have been very helpful to know earlier. Thanks anyway!! I am sure it will come handy in the future.

These two statements seem to be in conflict.

Could that 'TF' have been subs?

1. Enemy ships could arrive there during night, so they can disband in base after day ends.

2. I almost sure they are not subs. I have 50 search planes there and 30 ASW planes in range. All search planes (6 or 7 reports where telling about surface ships TF so DL must be high), second none of ASW planes report sub contact in area.

3. I have ordered reckon of base so maybe tomorrow we will be smarter

Your avatar is very nice...but I thought there would be an 8000 plane fight and the decisive battle!

You should have released your avatar after another crushing victory!

Good luck!

Only reason why i park my ships like that was because i was sure allies dont find them.
Dont know how Docup is using his search planes, but it is bad how he is. He should use long range Catalina's there, especially during operation like that. From my experience (I use H8 and G3M3 as search planes) they are capable to detect enemy even from 15 hexes sometimes more.

I was able to detect his ships (only TF icon, no intel about ships and numbers) when they where near Marauke so from almost 25 hexes from Kendari and Ternate where my serch planes are based

Insted his search capability is ending on Kendari-Sorong line.

Title of this AAR was suggested by Docup so philosophy of how i am playing is Docup idea

I agree with you about search range, but more often on the forum I see reference to limiting groups to 12 hexes to limit ops losses on the theory that there isn't much detection beyond that range anyway. While that might be strictly true, you only need to get a search hit to know that something is going on, a very important early warning!

I have ops loses from flying long range search. It happens but for japan it is acceptable. But my experience show that most of loses for search planes is enemy CAP.

So far i lost 450 flying boats, only 140 is ops and 250 is A2A

I can fly Coronado groups to 21 hexes no problem, and I've gotten hits at around that range. I've only lost 1-2 so far in several months.

Turn send. It take me 3,5h, and on end i forgot to adjust subs patrol zones.
Now waiting
I don`t use all planes . In manila i leave 750 planes as tactical reserve. So only ~2300 will try to kill something tomorrow

PS. Last turn Tavoy hold another day. Docup is pushing but terrain, forts and high distribution of his forces giving him negative adjusted AV (1:4 last turn) and he is not able to push me out of base. I have ID 70miles from base, on major road they should arrive in 3-4 days.I hope i will hold long enough.

Ouch, poor Docup really dropped the ball on his search. If I were him I would have had at least 2 Cat squadrons flying from the base just west of Sorong. And as backup two more at Boela.

Or, he has figured out that if he appears to be going all-in, then pulls back the turn that he looks like he's supposed to land, throws 50 subs in the approach paths and leaves 4-5 Fletcher TFs patrolling under LR CAP, maybe he'll save his CVs and amphibs this time ...
