Reinforcements for Shimushiri-jima almost arrive. Docup know they comming.

Again 200 Jap 2E attack Shimushiri-jima. This time i find small enemy CAP. I don`t see enemy ships around Shimushiri-jima but they must be 11 hexes or closer from Island. (7 hex limit on CV is only for offensive missions) Again over 40 enemy squads disabled during day

Allied CV TF attack Marcus Island. No CAP or ships in Port. I think Docup shoul that ships in norh Pacific supporting invasion, There it is waste of resources

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 7 (3 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 86 (5 destroyed, 81 disabled)

I manage to airlift 90AV last turn on island. Tomorrow I should airlift another 90AV and unload 450AV elite Guard ID. It should give me 1000AV garisoon. I have another ID redy to unload in about week.
Tomorrow Amph TF will start unloading ID, two SAGs will protect them during nigh. One will stay another will bombard base before morning and retreat. KB should jump close to island and give CAP to invasion. KB is now force of 920 planes. Interesting turn tomorrow.

Yup everything is indicating this battle is going to turn into a magnificent victory! But you're going to need more reinforcements than that to finish off the Allied defenders in a reasonable amount of time.

I will divide last turn on two posts.
In first i will write about Marcus IIsland, in nex we will back to north pacific.

14 March 1945

So what was looking as CV raid in real was Marcus Island invasion.
But it go bad for allies. I believe Docup made here few mistakes. He forgot Marcus Island is atoll, he underestimate defenders flexibility on island size 1, he land with to big forces.

Landing start at night and from beginning it not go so well for allies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Invasion action off Marcus Island (123,85)
Defensive Guns engage approaching landing force

183 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Allied Ships
APA Adair
APA Dauphin
APA Dutchess
APA Renville

Allied ground losses:
122 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Marcus Island (123,85)

TF 315 troops unloading over beach at Marcus Island, 123,85

Allied ground losses:
48 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 108 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 13 (0 destroyed, 13 disabled)
Vehicles lost 49 (1 destroyed, 48 disabled)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Invasion Support action off Marcus Island (123,85)
Defensive Guns engage approaching landing force

194 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Allied Ships
APA Adair
APA Dauphin
APA Dutchess
APA Renville

Allied ground losses:
190 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 31 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

During day, like day earlier Docup decide to attack defenders of Marcus from air. But this time i have there fighters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Marcus Island , at 123,85

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 74 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 33 minutes

Japanese aircraft
J2M5 Jack x 33
Ki-44-IIc Tojo x 46

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 58
F6F-3 Hellcat x 59
TBM-1C Avenger x 36

Japanese aircraft losses
J2M5 Jack: 1 destroyed
Ki-44-IIc Tojo: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
FM-2 Wildcat: 2 destroyed
F6F-3 Hellcat: 9 destroyed
TBM-1C Avenger: 21 destroyed, 8 damaged
TBM-1C Avenger: 1 destroyed by flak

And ground combat phase start.
As usual first Japanise defenders shell landing forces. Nice result i must say

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Marcus Island (123,85)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 4721 troops, 109 guns, 20 vehicles, Assault Value = 196

Defending force 12421 troops, 238 guns, 345 vehicles, Assault Value = 428

Japanese ground losses:
122 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
182 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 5 (5 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 12 (10 destroyed, 2 disabled)

And than miracle. To be honest Docup made the same mistake i do when i try recapture Wotje. On island of size of small parking he land 20k troops. Japanese soldier don`t even have to aim. Bloodbath

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Marcus Island (123,85)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 10664 troops, 220 guns, 260 vehicles, Assault Value = 413

Defending force 6626 troops, 122 guns, 52 vehicles, Assault Value = 188

Allied adjusted assault: 40

Japanese adjusted defense: 131

Allied assault odds: 1 to 3 (fort level 5)

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
1795 casualties reported
Squads: 33 destroyed, 85 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 39 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 39 disabled
Guns lost 60 (18 destroyed, 42 disabled)
Vehicles lost 29 (1 destroyed, 28 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1113 casualties reported
Squads: 102 destroyed, 90 disabled
Non Combat: 40 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 7 disabled
Guns lost 63 (35 destroyed, 28 disabled)
Vehicles lost 88 (85 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:
670th Tank Destroyer Battalion - unit destroyed
41st Infantry Div /8 - down to less than 100AV
240th USN Base Force - down to 0 AV
Palmyra (Det.) Defense Battalion down to 0 AV

Defending units:
Yokosuka 5th SNLF
Kure 3rd SNLF
1st Ind.Tank Co
Minamitorishima Naval Guard Unit
4th Medium Mortar Battalion
29th Ind. Engineer Regiment
5th JNAF AF Unit

Docup have two choices. Retreat what left from landing forces or unload what left on ships from 41st Infantry Div
If he do that tomorrow again he will shock. I plan to airlift to Marcus ~60-80 AV during next turn. If he shock i will crash him.
Current island defenders are reduced to 60 AV

Ouch, looks like DOCUP forgot about atolls. You need weeks of preparation attacks by BB bombardments and airstrikes...

Don´t think Marcus was the right choice for him to do right now. If I were him I would have landed on Hokkaido or the Okinawas.

Capturing Marcus have some advantages. It closes my eyes on central Pacific.
Allowing him to safely travel between Hawaii and Aleutians and Kuriles

Remember, that Patrol planes from Marcus detect Paramushiro-jima invasion. Giving me extra few days to prepare. Also it make Marianas in P-51D range.

Only problem for Docup was that he made all wrong with that invasion.

I don't think the Japan success has to do with the Allied numbers.

First, the terrain is atoll, and as per manual, atoll fights are more bloody than the other terrain types.

Second, Allied shock-attacked and went through an additional round of Jap fire. I guess the Jap mortar battalion packed 30 or 36 mortar tubes. I was thinking of stuffing small atolls with two such battalions (since their stacking cost is relatively low) and see how they fare against a shock attack. They are useless in artillery bombardments due to their very short range, but in assault the weapon ranges do not matter. I guess they wrecked the Allies here.

Certainly good points and it makes sense if it was 3/44. But its 3/45 and DOCUP is out of time.

OK, time for north Pacific.
Everything goes well. There was time when my heart stops when i saw Kaga as target for sub, but lucky she miss.

Almost full ID unload. Only some guns and 10 quads left on ships. Garrison of island is now decent 900AV(and 300 more planed to airlift)

On night we have lot of subs attack. Damn i believe ~40+ subs can be in area.
Jap Torpedo boats sunk DE that was patrolling near.

At morning as suspected allied CV TF (small one ~300 planes show up)
There was no CV battle we end out of range. But allied bombers attack island and ships in hex. And Japanise bombers attack enemy troops on island

Looking good for you. Keep pouring it on. Potentially you can 'kill' 3 US divs, including a marine div plus another div at Marcus. That cuts into his options. He won't be able to support as fast a landing cycle due to prep times.

As for his outcome at Marcus, I think some bad rolls and good defense on your part. I think he got disrupted more than he planned and he is short of landing ships so he didn't offload in one phase. Kudo's to you.

I agree with you, Marcus is important for you for Nav Search. I also agree with Joc; it is mid '45. The allies will be desperate. Time is running out and they haven't really hurt you. Great defense thus far.

Edit: Desperate to me means: don't give up any cheap attacks. He has to bypass and get an 'interior' base quickly. I'd retract my perimeter and strengthen my interior defense, leaving good pickets and put all Netties I can on NavSearch. Don't give up a PI or Bonin landing because you have strong Marianas defense.
At tis point, B29's could hurt you but they can't win for the allies. He needs a base within B17 range of the HI to win now. That's only 14 hexes for full loads on the G model.

Banzai!!!!

Wow. Doccup spilts his forces for two simultaneous invasions and it seems he will lose in both of them. Things are really desperate for the Allies and they're not getting any better.

The way I see it, Doccup is going to HAVE To go with a ground heavy strategy going forward. He can probably LBA his way to the Phillipines but at this point I just don't see the Allies making any successful landings in places like Okinawa or even the Marianas. And I think that you will be able to defend Japan against 4E without escorts. So really I'm wondering what you have planned for late 45 to stop the Allies on the ground or at least slow them down?

Kendari

After last naval battle allies bombard and finally and close Kendari AF Lucky i predicted that and i had evacuated most of planes to safe AF. What stay on field was tactical minimum.

Kuriles

Two quiet days. KB manage safely return to Japan. Time to rebuild squadrons. I should be able to have almost 1000 plans on KB. All damaged ships manage to arrive to ports in Japan. I will need to spreed them between dry docks in empire. In 3 days i will know how long will take to repair them.

Allies retreat East. They are staying behind Jap bomber range. Japanese garrison on Shimushiri-jima grow up to 1050AV.
10th ID just unload in Hokadate. I will air lift it to Shimushiri-jima in next 3-4 days. Vehicles will need to be transported by sea. So i should have 1500AV at the end.

I start hunting enemy subs in area. In last 3 days 5 of them sunk. I lost 3 Es in process.

I need asap resupply bases East of Shimushiri-jima

Not expecting wonders from it. I just need something that is fast and can survive, in decent shape, enemy sweeps and after that have enough punch to kill 4E bomber. It will be nice point defense fighter adding some quality to Ki-84r, A7M2 and Ki-83 mix.

No disrespect to either side here, but I think at this point that the difference in skill levels between players is now painfully apparent.

It can survive the Stang sweeps and deliver a punch back. Not the best climb, but the speed keeps it in the fight.
Also closes with 4E quickly and doesn't take as much damage.
