ive seen this message all over combat replays and not knowing much about ships....what does this mean?

my guess is that the masts, wires, funnels, part of the bridge and other stuff have been destroyed and are now floating in the water

edit: can anyone provide a picture so i can visualize what this would look like?

its basically a dramatic way of saying non-essential hit. aka "Superstructure hit" Belt and deck armor penetrations, when acompanied by a descriptive msg usually mean signifigant major damage to key systems. Superstructure hits will usually do little SYS and no major damage SYS. There is no chance of FLT damage and biggest impact usually is fire levels.
