AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 16, 42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Lae , at 99,126 Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 10 NM, estimated altitude 28,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 2 minutes Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 44 Allied aircraft P-39D Airacobra x 16 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed Allied aircraft losses P-39D Airacobra: 3 destroyed needless to say I don't want to have this enemy convoy unloading at Lae unharmed so we've ordered our strike aircraft to attack... KB didn't launch anymore strikes against PM yesterday so I was sure it is in a pure defensive position now (as it should have been right from day one of this operation) so I only kept 30% of my fighters defending Port Moresby, the rest was set to sweep Lae and the bombers were on nav attack range limited to reach Lae but not KB... and also needless to say, the sweeps look like the way they always do/did, squadrons going in one by one, having each lost a couple of aircraft on the way to the target... yeepeeee! The first incoming squadron was hit rather hard by more Zeroes over Lae than I had expected... thought there would be a max of two dozen on LRCAP with the rest over KB but I'm pretty sure lots of the Cap was leaking into the hex... CAP engaged: Chitose Ku S-1 with A6M2 Zero (3 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) (4 plane(s) diverted to support CAP in hex.) 3 plane(s) intercepting now. 0 plane(s) not yet engaged, 1 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact. Cap was considerable reduced already and their short dive period wasn't decisive, so the Warhawks could hold their own getting all bombers through unharmed... this was then followed by a massacre on the unloading convoy... nav bomb skill >65, clear sky and dive bombers means pretty much wiping out the enemy... it's a pity the enemy was able to unload all troops but those troops won't nearly get all the supply mortar has planned to bring in, that's for sure... LRCAP or leaking Cap really isn't that efficient without radar in the hex and this is what really made a difference today too, our fighters over Port Moresby are fighting with plenty radar support... then it was time for the bombers to dive down on the burning convoy but moderate rain didn't allow a comparable massacre as has happened in the morning and scoring another 6 1000lb bomb hits was pretty much what I expected to see... seeing so many undamaged freighters in the afternoon was surprising to me as I didn't expect the convoy being that big, nav search reported it as having something like 6 or 7 ships in total but the convoy consists of something like 20 ships I think... would have been great to also have my 65 low nav skilled Marauders at Port Moresby but the airfield is still too small to accomodate them, not really because of the aircraft stacking, but the admin stacking... having all those mini units as the Allied means being hit by the stacking limit at least twice as much as the Japanese, but hey ho, at least we can build airfields in a couple of days/weeks from 43 on when there are plenty of sea bee units around...
