Hi Chris!

I don't think that abolishing the amphib bonus is the holy grail you'll make it out to be since accomplishing even anything close to the historical conquest of the DEI without will be impossible I fear. Taking all these extra bases and dot hexes is pretty vital for Japan and I don't think you could achieve it without the current bonus. Limiting it to certain hex borders might be better than abolishing it completely.

hey mate!

absolutely agree, I have no problem if the amphib bonus is used where it is "supposed" to be used. Problem is, the IJ usually lands with the amphib bonus 5000 miles away from the most outlying historical targets. And here starts the problem, why should a USMC division in 45 be 80-90% disabled from landing unprepared at an enemy base while the IJ divs can do whatever they want UNPREPARED during the amphib bonus phase?

Without this fantasy bonus the enemy would have failed at Horn Island (how many waves of unprepared troops came in? 5? 10?), without the fantasy bonus the enemy would not land unprepared at Port Blair and three weeks later with the same units on Ceylon, faster than I was able to bring in troops (even if only by a couple of days).

The amphib bonus as it is, is not about all the dot or empty bases in the SRA, it doesn't matter if you take those empty bases in 1/42 or 8/42, it's all about doing landings far outside the SRA or in a way that makes no sense at all (I have to admit I have never had an opponent putting his invasions forward in such a way as mortar does/did).

Like I've said earlier, either screw it completely, have it valid only inside the SRA (or for all those historical targets) or IMO the best solution, let the IJ troops accumulate 2 prep points per day in the first 6 months so they have to PLAN their invasions, prepare their troops and then go ahead. Not like it is now, don't plan much, send something, find out two nav guards are not enough, send two more, then a rgt and then another unprepared div to take a place like it has been in this PBEM more than once. No planning, rather poor landings but it all didn't matter because the IJ can bring in more totally unprepped units at will, unloading faster during those "opposed" landings than the Allied unload in their friendly bases.

We should not forget, with all the screw ups the enemy has done so far and with all the unusual losses the enemy took, he nevertheless took all the area in three months, the Japanese took in the first 12 months, so with all the screw up he moved 4 times faster than real life AND took Port Blair and is about to also take Ceylon. And the only reason I've seen making this possible was the amphib bonus, because I can't do much more than to destroy as many combat squads being the equivalent of three or four enemy divisions so far (with more than another div about to be destroyed at Port Moresby).

I was never really aware what an impact the amphib bonus really has, because I've never ended up in a comparable situation like this in a PBEM. Remembering our PBEM, amphib bonus or not, you have never put your invasions forward like mortar has been doing. I can't remember a single offensive of yours that was only relying on the amphib bonus, nor would I say your main benefit was that bonus. You came, you fougth, you took your targets, amphib bonus or not wasn't the deciding factor.

On the other side, in late 44 when I brought 2000 av, 100% prepared to take an island and failed, I had to wait another 3 months to have my reinforcements fully prepped to be able to land at the "hostile" base while I've already had 150.000 soldiers there. Compare this to the first four months and the amphib bonus. IMO it doesn't fit together.

What is now happening on Ceylon and what earlier happened to the Royal Navy around Ceylon is purely my fault, because I should not have sent those bgd to Port Blair when I know the enemy can use a couple of unprepared divs at will (remember, the first "invasion" of a single small IJN unit failed) and I should not have sent the Royal Navy in to fight the IJN as I know the odds so the disaster of losing the RN is my fault as well as the loss of the bgds at Port Blair and now the loss of more or less emtpy Ceylon. BUT, again, without the amphib bonus this would all not have been possible in that way. Why? Because it would have taken the enemy three months minimum more to be ready to go with two+ divs for Port Blair AND land those units on Ceylon three weeks later. By then, there would have been 500 av more at Colombo and the RN would not be sent in to die.

Even if my decisions were plain dumb (due to my knowledge on the game), they would have been "avoidable" and this is what makes me grumble.

Main problem with the amphibious bonus is that it works for opposed landings while the Japanese landing doctrine was to land at places where there was no opposition.

Kota Bharu was a surprise landing in the early hours of the war and as if I remember correctly, the only other opposed landing was at Milne Bay and a miserable failure.

However, the amphib bonus is neccessary for the AI (and for WITP/AE newbies).

yeah, I know it is there for the AI. It would be cool to have a toggle, like "amphib bonus yes/no" for PBEM.

It is also required to provide tension for the IJFB to speed their assault and to provide some drama [as if the fact the Allied new toys and the need for oil is not enough] .. then suddenly one day they forget how to invade!

Ok back to the war ..

when the IJA ground forces will finally show up at Soerabaja there will nothing be left of the heavily entrenched Dutch troops... daily IJAAF medium bomber attacks will have taken care of my static Dutch units (pity you can't abandon static devices and the whole units get destroyed)... the IJAAF is coming in at longe range from Makassar day after day, suffering literally no losses... considering the thousands of medium bomber sorties in the first couple of months, the enemy got an op loss rate around 0.1%... Flying nav search in a USN patrol aircraft is around 50 times more dangerous than the daily combat mission in a IJAAF bomber as I've lost 6 or 7 dozen Catalinas already... yes, setting 60 search 40 rest, below normal range, 6000ft... I find it yet again ridicoulos that nav search is the most dangerous mission on Earth in AE...

the only place where we can take real revenge in the near future, expect these units to be destroyed in about two months when I will have some worthy combat units at Port Moresby... our assault value here is misleading, those units < divisions are not really suited for combat and take too many losses...

the Dutch receive Hurricanes and Warhawks now and I've thought I could use two squadrons to attack the daily bombing runs to Soerabaja... my fighters are at Malang (which the enemy has never attacked even though I've flown several bomber strikes out of it, lol) and are on LRCAP killing over a dozen bombers... expect the unescorted bomber strikes to stop or coming in with Zero or Oscar escorts/sweeps... can't say I expect a big strike against Malang as mortar hasn't done that so far while he could have wiped out all the Dutch airforce in one or two turns attacking Malang... one of those things I fail to understand...

Colombo got some nice flak, a bad place for bombers... if we would have just had time to move in the planned reinforcements it would a perfect place to defend against an enemy siege... lots of supplies that would last a year or longer with no other place on the map except Pearl Harbour having a comparable flak defense... well, my couple of Ind bgd won't hold forever of course...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x D3A1 Val releasing from 2000' *
Naval Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb

and here is KB popping up again... we have a supply convoy unloading at Port Moresby with 150 fighters on Cap there and then KB launches a strike at extended range... what really strikes me is why the hell is KB launching a nav strike against my ships when mortar just has to know there are loads of fighters at Port Moresby that have caused serious losses to his carrier aircraft before and why are those Vals attacking with only 2x60kg bombs? Doesn't that mean they would be set to using a drop tank? I have never seen Vals attacking with 2x60kg bombs only...

anyway, we get up more than 50% of our available fighters to defend the low value convoy (we do have enough supplies at Port Moresby that it would not be a tragedy to lose those three medium sized freighters that are 60% unloaded) and what follows is a pretty one sided affair in that our fighters get a long dive phase against the enemy escorts taking down one and a halve dozen Zeroes and nearly all Vals... 4 Kates on nav search were also reported shot down... Vals with drop tanks on nav attack and Kates on nav search? This is getting more and more amazing to me...

bringing KB close to PM to launch a nav strike is where the flaw starts IMO... no sense doing that... let alone the fact that is once again pure luck to run over halve a dozen of my subs with none of them even thinking about attacking...

oh come on mortar, what are you doing? Can he be serious? How can one do this, how can one be that careless? Even without yesterday's failed nav strike one would not attack PM if not 100% necessary but he did. Ok, he had to find out the hard way (again) that it was not a good idea yesterday. We kept happily unloading our small supply convoy and thought he would move away with KB again anyway... no, he didn't... and this time he sends in some Kates with a Zero escort and it is yet another turn when KB's strike is butchered... heck, this must be the fourth or fifth time already that KB has lost a hell a lot of Zeroes since the outbrake of the war for little or no gain... well, we have a 2900 ton freighter in sinking condition now, the ship was nearly empty... what a great result for KB, paying with two dozen aircraft of this strike being shot down for a whopping couple of USAAF fighters...

and that of course only was the morning strike, another one following in the afternoon, again meeting more than 90 of my fighters set to Cap... this time only a dozen Zeroes were on escort and halve of them are shot down, then our fighters turned onto the Kates shooting down all but one... I really can't believe this is happening, it's a PBEM after all... normally I would cheer about such a result, but in this PBEM I really start to wonder where this is leading to... you can screw up things and end up with a KB strike you didn't want to happen but mortar has lost already something like 200 KB aircraft over Port Moresby alone as this is not the first "operation" that goes that way...

I really just can't believe it... he lost roughly a hundred aircraft over Port Moresby the last two turns for a torp hit on a xAK and a dozen of my fighters shot down... sorry, but this is what the AI is doing but a PBEM player? total air losses now show over 400 Zeroes shot down already, we are only in mid March, means more than 130 Zeroes shot down every month since outbreak of hostilities! I think alltogether we have lost only a little over 150 fighters of all types (including ground losses of the first day and all the obsolete Dutch)... the 400 Zeroes lost may surely be an exageration but that would still mean more than 300 of them lost in three months... well, not really surprising with operations like this one... just don't know what mortar is doing, this pretty much takes away the joy of such "victories"...

just look at the total air to air losses of Zeroes, P-40 and P-39, I think this says it all...

well, tried a deliberate attack with most of those units at Port Moresby and have to pay for it of course... the ground combat as flawed as it is caused one of my small units to be completely destroyed, only some motorized support left... the enemy suffered a whopping ONE squad destroyed... fun... but hey, didn't I say I have to wait for combat worthy divisional sized units to attack here... once more, I know how it works and don't listen to my own advise... wow, silly I am...

I do that sort of thing a lot as well. On some level I know what I'm doing is a bad idea, but sometimes I end up doing it anyway.

SS Tuna launches 2 torpedoes at 3,000 yards

that is the sub that sunk one of my AVD and was then hit by a single DC... no it is hit by two duds... pretty sure the sub will make Rabaul and live on...

TF 118 encounters mine field at Lae (99,126)

Japanese Ships
PB Bisan Maru #3

2 mines cleared

Argonaut brought some mines to Lae and we now also see the reason for KB being in the area, a convoy arrives at Lae... now using KB to cover that convoy is a good idea, having KB's bombers set to nav attack my ships at PM makes it a bad idea in the end... KB is still strong enough that it is immune to my LBA at this stage of the war so using it to cover an invasion works well, but my LBA (when massed like at PM) is definitely strong enough to trash KB's airwings if mortar decides to attack such a base...

Vals dont have drop tanks. They have a reduced load 2x 60 kg bombs if attacking at long range (7 hexes). Usualy a bad idea.

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 3 destroyed

needless to say I don't want to have this enemy convoy unloading at Lae unharmed so we've ordered our strike aircraft to attack... KB didn't launch anymore strikes against PM yesterday so I was sure it is in a pure defensive position now (as it should have been right from day one of this operation) so I only kept 30% of my fighters defending Port Moresby, the rest was set to sweep Lae and the bombers were on nav attack range limited to reach Lae but not KB...

and also needless to say, the sweeps look like the way they always do/did, squadrons going in one by one, having each lost a couple of aircraft on the way to the target... yeepeeee! The first incoming squadron was hit rather hard by more Zeroes over Lae than I had expected... thought there would be a max of two dozen on LRCAP with the rest over KB but I'm pretty sure lots of the Cap was leaking into the hex...

then it was time for the bombers to show up, I'm really glad most of the sweeping fighters went in first, otherwise we could have lost a good number of bombers and bombers are worth their weight in gold at this stage of the war... Cap was considerable reduced already and their short dive period wasn't decisive, so the Warhawks could hold their own getting all bombers through unharmed... this was then followed by a massacre on the unloading convoy... nav bomb skill >65, clear sky and dive bombers means pretty much wiping out the enemy... it's a pity the enemy was able to unload all troops but those troops won't nearly get all the supply mortar has planned to bring in, that's for sure...

the morning phase went really well, both our fighters and bombers did very well, mostly due to our sweeps and the excellent weather... we attacked again in the afternoon, this time of course without sweeps as those are going in only once a day and I wasn't really pleased to still see 20 enemy fighters over the convoy as our escorts only slightly outnumbered them... what followed was pretty much a massacre within the escorting Warhawks, this round clearly goes to the Zeroes but again the bombers got through without being touched... LRCAP or leaking Cap really isn't that efficient without radar in the hex and this is what really made a difference today too, our fighters over Port Moresby are fighting with plenty radar support... then it was time for the bombers to dive down on the burning convoy but moderate rain didn't allow a comparable massacre as has happened in the morning and scoring another 6 1000lb bomb hits was pretty much what I expected to see... seeing so many undamaged freighters in the afternoon was surprising to me as I didn't expect the convoy being that big, nav search reported it as having something like 6 or 7 ships in total but the convoy consists of something like 20 ships I think... would have been great to also have my 65 low nav skilled Marauders at Port Moresby but the airfield is still too small to accomodate them, not really because of the aircraft stacking, but the admin stacking... having all those mini units as the Allied means being hit by the stacking limit at least twice as much as the Japanese, but hey ho, at least we can build airfields in a couple of days/weeks from 43 on when there are plenty of sea bee units around...

really intense turn, the enemy attacks at Colombo again, another time achieving only bad odds and taking quite a lot of disablements... but our defensive strenght is steadily worn down and we only have 150 av left now, means we won't hold much longer, especially as the enemy seems to bring in more reinforcements... makes me again wonder why he attacks BEFORE the reinforcements arrive... the eng rgts were worn down before already and both divisions are only ghosts of what they have been when they landed on Ceylon... while we will still lose in the end - no doubt about that - and will have all units destroyed, the enemy will have suffered 90% of his casualties as disabled squads/devices but at least those units will have lost all their offensive power for at least three monhts and by then the fantasy amphib bonus is long gone and my defenses will have increased dramatically (have to say that I'm already now in a very good position and am feeling pretty much save)... what is now happening at Colombo in a clear hex is what I expected my three Ind bgds doing at Port Blair in a jungle hex (also with level 3 forts like at Colombo), we are holding the enemy back, wearing the enemy troops down and are delaying further advance... we all know what happened at Port Blair, we surrendered on the first attack...

Vals dont have drop tanks. They have a reduced load 2x 60 kg bombs if attacking at long range (7 hexes). Usualy a bad idea.

thanks for the Info, didn't know that as I've so far haven't touched the Japanese in AE and there were no 60kg bombs in WITP, the Vals always attacked with their 250kg bombs. But yes, attacking at 7 hexes is a bad idea then, no matter if attacking into a hornets nest like PM or an undefended hex as those 60kg bombs are pretty much just like popcorn...

and here are this turn's air losses, equal losses on both sides but with probably a dozen enemy freighters sunk, two and a halve dozen KB Zeroes shot down with only two SBD lost and most of the supply not reaching Lae I would say it is an Allied victory

though what is really concerning is the total number of Zekes destroyed as this number has dropped to 345 (after reports that we have shot down another 33 today). This is concerning as a couple of turns ago the total number of Zeroes lost was above 400 already. Wow, FOW is quite a margin higher than I've thought, jumping up and down by 30-40%!

Not that it would be anywhere bad to take out 300+ Zeroes (mostly KB Zeroes with top notch pilots) until March 17th but seeing the loss list drop by something like 100 Zeroes was really surprising.

Japan has also no reserve of experienced Dive Bomber Pilots. For Torpedo ones one can empty Netty Squadrons but there is nothing for Divebombers. A shame to waste them like that.

yes it is, mortar has lost by far too many of KB's aircraft/pilots already, for no real gain so to say. Sinking a single, nearly empty 2900 ton freighter for the loss of two dozen KB aircraft is a bad trade, doing something like this several times is, well, how should I call it?

Not too swift?

You can train the basic Nav Bombing easily enough, but lose the good search and land bombing as well as high EXP and good defense numbers of the early IJN DB pilots. I'd much rather commit Kates to these missions and leave the Vals restricted to search and defending the area around the KB.
