First question. Spreadsheet is populated with the Tracker data, and there are 110 rows for Japanese Manpower centers. Reviewing your document, I don't see any mention of this category. Is this just something that can be ignored? Can't say I can recall ever hearing somebody complain about running out of troops....

Yes - I did ignore it because manpower has no shortage in a stock game. I think I did mention not repairing any of them though. In modded games however, such as Treespider's (and a mod I'm putting together Options_88) there are tighter considerations.

None of them need to be repaired, so it's a moot point, I suppose. Interestingly, there's 514 lines worth of "Industry" (counting resources, oil, factories, basically everything of that sort), and only 75 are potentially repairable (all of which are aircraft factories).

With the Allied spreadhseet, the only options were "repair or not", so I have to get into a different mindset with Japan since expansion and changed production and halting of production are all in the mix. Gah.

Something is a little odd. After making the comments about "what's damaged" (which came from analyzing Tracker data from the Day 2 file of Allied Ironman), I looked at your 006.pws file and found several examples of damage that were not in my files (for example your Kate factory in Hiroshima has zero repaired and 30 damaged, but mine is 0 & 0). Also looking at the Naval shipyard in Tokyo, the numbers are 3 damaged, 97 repaired in your file but 0 & 97 in mine (lots more like this in other cities). At first I thought well, maybe it's an oddity associated with the Ironman Scenario, but I loaded scenarios 1 & 2 in the editor, and they show the same numbers I see in my tracker data, i.e. lots of missing damage. So is my game install just screwed up somehow or are you making adjustments to the baseline scenario files (presumably to fix previously reported errors)?

Edit: On further review (nice tutorial on the Industrial Management screen, btw), it looks like you made these changes yourself as part of the overall "modification to the Japanese economy". As an Allied only player, I'd never realized how the new screen allows you to make incremental changes as opposed to the old "double everything" method. Very nice.

Yes I did cause I thought they were necessary and prescriptive from the get-go. I think I've outlined pretty much what I did in the last section where I talk about a daily approach ... or maybe I need to revisit and check. I think your idea in the other thread is very valuable though. Good luck with it.

A question about the Oil on Sakhalin and Hokkaido. Does it make sense to pick this up at the same ports which are targets for Resources (Sapporo & Toyohara), or should it pool elsewhere (presumably at Hakodate & Shikuka). Either way, how do you "force" the oil to flow to a given port - by turning Oil Storage "On", or some other method?

In my experience Oil doesn't usually move very much from Shikuka to Toyohara. Loading oil from Toyohara will move some from one port to the other and using the ON storage option too. But, you don't want it there anyway, Shikuka has a bigger port and with the Oil Centre at Shikuka, it will give a better load rate. You can get resources to move to Shikuka but once again you need to calculate if it is worth it.

The Port load industrial multipliers sometimes make a smaller port size more efficient than a larger one(without industry).

Bump for new players...

Thanks! On the subject of convoys, have you given any thought to Niigata as the end point for the Toyohara ships? Same distance in hexes as Iwaki, but the port is size 5 vs. size 3, and more important, most of the journey is through the Sea of Japan vs. the more sub-infested waters off SE Honshu/Hokkaido.

I always route them with waypoints through the Sea of Japan. And yes I tend to do this, although I make sure my ports aren't overburdened cause that once again causes bottlenecks with too many TF's trying to get dock space. Last point here too, after a few months, the surplus is drained and it is necessary to reduce the convoys ...

Hi Damian

Looking at the section on pilot training i don't see 'general training' mentioned except for the lines in the table.

There are a LOT of 'X's in the general training lines - does this mean they gain in ALL these skills and if so then general training seems like a no brainer. However i'm sure there must be more to it than this, any chance you can explain the general training option in more detail?

many thanks

Just had another thought on something that would be useful for a new player to know (apologies if its already in but i don't recall a mention of it)

I seem to recall there are some special rules about CS to CVL upgrades in that some must be done in specific ports e.g. Tokyo but it doesn't start with a big enough shipyard. If this rule still applies it may be worth a mention at least in your turn checklist.

thanks again

A few items for your update:

1) The Air Production "Recommendations Chart" on page 22 has some factory omissions:
- Osaka/Kyoto: Chart has 3 Air Frame Factories, Actual count is 10
- Utsonomiya: Chart has 1 Air Frame Factories, Actual count is 3
- Yokohama/Yokosuka: Chart has 0 Air Frame Factories, Actual count is 4

2) Base Supply Multipliers: Your general recommendation on page 4 is to set a requirement of "4K" supply, and your downloadable example game features variations of this at most of the factory-owning cities. However, I find this is not adequate for cities with Engine and Airframe factories that are going to be experiencing a lot of changes. Places like Gifu and Maebashi barely even reach 10K each turn, and that's quickly eaten up by expansions. I find that 6K is best for the vehicle/airframe/engine factory cities - at least for the first month or so.

Hi guys -
I'm putting together a document to help new players get to grips with the Japanese economic system. I think some of it is very verbose and technical. Probably a huge turn off, which is not what I wanted.

Maybe some of it needs culling or rewriting. Anyway, it isn't final yet. And when it is, I hope that the checklist idea that I've just started will be all that most need to get something started. The rest of it could be read at one's pleasure for understanding.
Doc

Pdf

Comments and suggestions welcome. Corrections too. I know we all do things slightly differently. Please take this in the spirit that I offer it. A guide for beginners. (Even if it needs to have a re-write to become one)

Regards,

[edit] Noted that the pic's were a bit bad so re-did them. The Pdf looks better than the doc version.
[edit] Just updated the doc a bit... will continue to update ...
[update] Save file - completed orders up till the airframe sequence
Scen 1, R&D realistic

Airframes complete

scen 2 update save around or just for 1 ?
saves a lot of work that's for sure!
thx for your efforts

Hi, Damien

I'm coming into this late. Is the draft doc shown in your first post the most up-to-date? Also, the .pws files, I don't know how to handle those, are they data files to be fed into a game file folder? If so, is there a reason I should hesitate to do that?

Hi,
Yeah the "draft" is the most up-to-date version. I do add to it from time to time and after your LCU production question I intend to add some more probably this weekend.

The pws files are just saves from scenario 1, showing what I did economically to set up. Just put them in your save folder and open via the game. No need to use them, they are there just for show.

As to Tracker, I'm open to helping you if you provide a little more detail and can also hook up via live link to set it up...

PM if you want more details.

Cheers

This is a great thread. To bad it is lost in the matrix of other great threads. Discovered it by accident.

In the “Air Production” section of the JEcon, (pages twenty-two, twenty-three) Damian has the list of factories which is the same as the list on the bottom part of the Air Production page in Tracker. I would like this factories table in a spread sheet form for my own use. If I Export CSV, I only get the top part of that page, “AirFrames” (or “Engines”).

Any suggestions on how to export the bottom part?

Thanks
