As far as I know, the 'Uhu' was supposed to be the version with the IR night-fighting kit (and that's the picure used). Just to check - does the version in the game have IR capability, or is that misleading?? And if IR isn't in the game - how about for V.5??

Hello, The Panther Uhu does have IR vision with a range of ten hexes. You can see it in the OOB editor. ------------------ Lars Nec Temere - Nec Timide

Isn't "Uhu" German for "owl"? Or is my Deutsch pretty far off? Bing

On a Uhu-related topic, I ask the following: Is it just me, or are about 50% of the campaign battles (speaking WWII in my case) being done at night? While they're interesting, isn't such a rate far too high for WWII, particularly with Europeans fighting?

I am now running a campain game 11/44 with two Panther Uhu's the IR range is listed as three (3) when checking the vehical data (space bar) not 10 is it suppose to be 10? If yes then the OOB has a small bug.

You must multiply Ir value in OOB editor by 4,SPWaW works on SP3 core. 40 ir rating in OOB ed.= 10 in game. ------------------ jaro [This message has been edited by jaro (edited January 08, 2001).]

But I must admit that I don't know how good WW2 IR equipment was. ------------------ Lars Nec Temere - Nec Timide

Was the uhu supposed to work in conjunction with a halftrack mounted IR searchlight ? Or was it organic to the tank itself ?

If Searching light on Panther UHU was organic equipment of tank.SdKfz UHU was used for long range, becouse panther searching lights haven't power for longer ranges. Platoon with 4 Panther UHU and one Sdkfz UHU was used. jaro

For all you guys fortunate enough to be too young to have used IR equipment, it was poor even in the 1970's. We had IR sights and two different kinds of IR searchlights on M60A1's. The ability to identify and engage a target with IR was much worse than with white light, and much more difficult than with the later starlight scopes (Image Intensification). I can't comment on Thermal Imaging since I've never used it. I'd have to look into my old manuals to be sure, but I think we engaged out to about 1,000 meters with IR, using separate searchlight tanks. I never tried to illuminate my own target but supposedly it could be done at the proper target range. The target identification was so poor that on occasion firing tanks would mistake the searchlight tank for the target,(they'd follow the beam of light the wrong direction, to its source) so the safety officer had to keep a close watch for a turret turning too far out of the target area. ------------------ Target, Cease Fire !
