In the North Jocke's moves are more cautious. He has a few ships in Kodiak, but nothing that seems likely to be moving forward to Cold Bay or beyond. Mostly LSTs and ASW trawlers.

SUBS: The ASW has toned down now that the Allies have major operations over a wider area. I find only a few attacks every few days against subs operating around the islands South of the Solomons and near OZ.

Allied subs are just as menacing as they've been since the torps started working better. xAK Nichiwa Maru was sunk near Balikpapan by Snapper.

WEST OZ: Helens harrass the Aussie stack moving to Daly Waters, but the flak seems strong here. Lost one to ops. The 25th Aussie division is there, and three other units. I can't fight that at Daly, so I'll attempt to retreat my two Naval Guard units and AF Coy back to Katherine. They might not get out in time to avoid getting crushed.

NORTH PACIFIC: The elements of a CV TF are forming in Yokohama. This will attempt to sneak to the South of the Aleutians in the search dead zone and wait for any upcoming convoys/invasions moving in the area. If an AMC or AV becomes available it will be sent out farther ahead to provide more deep search of routes to Kodiak from the west Coast. Several Glen subs are already en route for the same.

BURMA: Nothing happening.

SO PAC: The last Japanese troops on Luganville were finished off. An LST cleared a mine the hard way at Koumac.

So he knows about that field now. I'm just about out of mines for the time-being, so in a month or so I'll lay a few more spreads in hopefully sneaky places.

SUBS: Lost an AMc near Carnarvon to KXII. No biggie, but i was hoping to clear some mines and hit some Aussie troops with a few last bombardments to send them on their way. No such luck.

WEST OZ: After a few days of sporadic bombing and quite a few losses to flak, the Aussie stack made it to Daly in time to hit my retreating SNLF/Naval Guards. Surprisingly, as they were moving in combat mode, it wasn't a massacre. Only a 2:1 result. He does have enough to cause some problems and fortify Daly, but it will be hard for him to move beyond as I have a similar amount of troops in Katherine and more reserves arriving in Darwin. We'll see how he likes the supply situation out there too. At least the attack may have cost him some major supply.

BURMA: Nothing.

SO PAC: Jocke goes over the beach at Torres Islands on the 21st. That's getting a bit close. I don't have the CVs here yet to really cause him problems, and it would be tough to do anything with them anyway. He's just loading up LSTs and moving up. So it looks like small SCTFs are the answer. I may also try one last shot for glory at Torres. Updates on that to come.

I'm not looking forward to facing massed 4E's again. Jocke certainly brings the hammer when using his air units in mass. You look in much better shape then I was in the Solomons, that will make quite a difference when Jocke tries to gain a foothold there. Do you get a sense that he might try and bypass stronger positions, or does it seem like a methodical advance to you?

Interesting times both in game and in real life. Jocke advances to the point of conflict in the South Pacific, where I now must answer his movements with some force. At home, he is expecting his first child any moment. Exciting days!

SUBS: Subs get some decent kills during these turns. All for the Allies unfortunately. No Tks though, which is good.

NORTH PACIFIC: A big 45 plane IJNAF fighter unit with decent pilots and A6M5 is now stationed in Adak. Another 30 plane group is also up here, plus Vals and Kates, a few groups of Jakes, and Emilys. No for the mobile strike force, three CVs led by Kaga are leaving Yokohama heading for the Aleutians. he has nothing to combat these forces now, unless he wants to risk his brand new Essex CV! Bring it on!

BURMA: Nothing happening. Seeing the effects of the monsoon on my supply movements, but there is no strain on them right now either.

SO PAC: A few DD SCTFs are sent in to Torres n the chance of finding something there. They do run into a mining TF and nearly get to the CM Terror, but the battle is benign in spite of the fact theta it gets to 4k yards and that Kamo, Kiyoshi crosses the 'T.' Good ships , not sure what happened.

Another SCTF on the 24th picks off several PTs in running battles.

Then in an attempt to throw one last hail Mary, I sent in the paras to Torres on the 26th preceded by sweeps. All of the sweeps were gutted ruthlessly by Corsairs and Hellcats. I thought that after the zeros went in and tired out the defenders the Tojos might have some luck, but no go. Lost over 40 planes on the day to about 12 of the defenders. Not good. Then the troops came in but some got nicked on the way by remaining CAP. They could only manage a 1:1 against the one marine defense battalion there. Oh, well. That's the end of that.

Reinforcements: The last of the first Unryus arrives bringing the fleet CVs to 9! I also still have 4 CVL and one CVE with one of the CS (the slower Mizuho, which picks up a few knots in conversion) on its way. The next CVs, the accelerated late Unryus, will not begin arriving until the summer of 44. A great thing about these ships is that two came with the D4Y3 Judy, giving me a limited 8 hex strike ability along with the Jills. The last also came with the armored zero, the A6M5c. Of course there are as yet no replacements, so they're kind of one shot weapons for now.

Until he gets CVs again I have the luxury of showing its placement as a deterrent. I have the place heavily mined with some CD guns and 360 AV under level 5.8 forts so far. I'm bringing a mobile reserve of a full division within two month' time, and a few brigades before that.

While he brings the hammer with 4Es he also might miss opportunities to hit smaller bases more often with lesser numbers. I've been able to build forts uninhibitedly throughout the Solomons and Eastern new Guinea.

The dot bases around Ndeni are vulnerable but he'll be in the firing line if he goes for them. Renell Island is also ripe, but very close to the hornets nest, and far from his bases for LR CAP. I think Torres is the final push in this phase, and now he must either mass everything, sweep and bomb me to oblivion, go hard for Ndeni and hope the KB can't stop him, or wait. If he keeps moving froward now, it will be bloody. Especially with Jacks online in a few days and Georges in a month!

He might not be even until the late Autumn or early winter in terms of planes on ships. And even then it'll be a combo of CVs and CVLs. The more i look at it the more I feel good about that. There is a nice little bit of water between his furthest advance and my defensive wall.

If I were him I would mass LBA in Northern OZ and try to break out there. I've already evacuated Horn Island and he hasn't yet taken it back. I have good bases and good troops here, but he would stand a better chance of making it across here than in the Solomons.

SUBS: Grayback sent Murakumo down for the count after battles at sea near Torres Island and an attack by air had slowed the DD.

BURMA: Tony Ib see their first action on the 28th. They do alright against a P-38 sweep. The combined CAP shoots down 6 of the beasts for 11 losses. About normal. Then a big well escorted (and LR CAPed) raid comes in later and hits oil and fields at Magwe. I need to reset my nearby fighters to cover at least 3 hexes in support. Only half of the CAP in hex was able to react after the sweep.

SO PAC: Wallis Island, long a Japanese scout base, is taken by the Allies after being evacuated a month ago. I'm operating Mavis from Funafuti now.

I made one DD raid too many on the 27th and will lose two for my folly. Good to see what's in the area, but not great to face these monster CLs. Also, USN bombers came in and added to the misery later in the day, and I didn't have the TF adequately LR CAPed due to losses the day before. Altogether a bad day.

On the 29th a big 4E raid preceded by P-38 sweeps wipes out nearly everything at Ndeni. All groups have been flown out and the damaged planes disbanded. It'll be a while before I can use this place again, and when I do, I'll need to support it more from nearby bases. Possibly even just use it for quick in and out raids one we've updated to the new patch and the Alies don't get free plane movement intel any longer.

Another waypoint reached today in the game. The midway mark through 1943. After the combat updates I'll go through and do a number of catching up posts to really show the state of the Empire at this point. It's also an important date for me as the first of my second generation IJN fighters goes into production; the J2M2 Jack.

SUBS: A few hits on subs by ASW, but as usual, none are more than slightly damaging.

PACIFIC: intelligence showed an Allied unit on a dot base in the Elice Islands, Nukufetau. I can't have that! A Bombardment TF is on the way and Bettys hit the unit today for decent disablements. I might hit it for a while and then para-drop enough to kick it off the base before reinforcements arrive.

BURMA: Nothing lately.

SO PAC: The 4Es hit the paras on Torres and disrupt them further. Although I'm not going to reinforce, it would be nice if those troops made him focus a little more on that dot base rather than plowing my airfields into oblivion. He disabled 17 squads with 180 4Es!

WEST OZ: It appears that after taking Daly Waters the Aussies are not sticking around to solidify the base. Troops are seen anyway moving back toward Tennant Creek. This is significant as if it is a complete pulling back, it will take months to move troops back in and attempt to get supply to flow. I wonder if he got scared off by the new brigades arriving at Darwin, or if he's just going to wait until he can move behind my defenses by sea months from now and not even try an overland campaign in the deserts of OZ?

Here is the overview of the R n D. As is quickly discernible, I've had to restart research for the Zero line. That's fine. I probably shouldn't have even changed over these two factories to research them again. I thought maybe the armored A6M5c would be useful later before the Sam comes online. Still, none of these planes is really very good after now, mid 43, when Hellcats and Corsairs begin to dominate.

I also screwed up and changed over a few of the factories researching the Tony, but that's fine, as if I hadn't I might have had the Ki-100 more than a year early. That's just not cricket.

In great news, the Frank has two repaired factories and the George is moving ahead with 3 repaired.

Thanks. It is feeling good now and as the months roll by I think more pressure is put on the Allies. I hope more pressure means desperate operations. We'll see.

Yes, I am.

I'm curious is the main answer.

I hear a lot of things from people about various planes, but I've not been there. When I set this up I was less experienced, but I also did know that I'd like to have the option to try some of these planes out. I didn't know how long the game would last or what position I'd be in once '45 rolled around. I do think good recon is very important, and the Ki-95 is very good for the late war. (I am a photographer after all!) Maybe I won't need it, but also I don't need to research a bunch of other stuff to get planes closer than 6-8 months ahead of schedule. I would really like to get the jets forward a month or two to see what they can do if I'm still in enough of a good state to manufacture them by then.

Also, with the engine bonuses in effect for many of these, two factories push them forward very quickly once they are repaired.

The main omission for me (as I look back now) was the Ki-94, as it comes so late, and I didn't know whether it would be any better than the other planes that come earlier that I might be able to use in future games. It sure looks good though, and now that it seems I'l possibly still be playing in late 45, it would have been good to try some.

There are at least 5-6 factories that are complete mistakes, but they're going now, so why change? I wouldn't research the Tabby, but then I didn't realize it was only an IJN plane. Doh!

I wouldn't now put any resources into the Myojo, which is in the Val line and was a wooden copy made in late war when materials are scarce. It has an 800kg bomb, but so will the late Judys, which are faster and better planes.

The float planes that sound so cool get chewed up easily by the time they arrive. The Rex is okay, but nothing to write home about. I'm anticipating the Paul and Seiran to be a big waste of time and supply.

So really it's a combination of inexperience and curiosity. I am lucky other things have gone fairly well so that I can live with the mistakes I've made here.

Early on the IJN did well against the British in the DEI, and I thought we had put down P of W as well as Repulse. It showed up later again, but I did get lucky with a few other BBs. The New Mexico was sunk by 4 DDs marauding near Lord Howe Island.

I was also thrilled to knock out two fast BBs with the CVs in the Battles for the New Hebrides.

I've not done well with the submarine fleet. I feel there should be another 20-30 ships on here if I could have located his shipping lanes and actually gotten past his escorts more often.

In an interesting note the CL Cleveland was reported recently to be sunk after a collision. I'm not sure I believe that, but it would be nice.

The IJN has had decent results, but for a while it didn't look so good. After a CV trade in late 42 I thought I was in for it. Then, when another opportunity presented itself, I rolled the dice and bribed the weather Gods with barrels of Saki. I'm sure there will be some days in the future where those same Gods will find bourbon more to their liking.

I have lost 2 CAs, a bunch of CLs, and some good tankers/oilers, but the DD losses have been light, thankfully.

I used to live in NC, by the way. I loved going down to the coast from Chapel Hill, especially to Okracoke and even once to Portsmouth Island. Amazing area. Your pic though says it all! Tough place to live year round.

I kick myself now that I never went to visit the NC in Willmington. Silly. Even from the side of the river though she's an impressive sight!

It's been a good while since I've updated with a look at the ships, air group and ground unit I have followed throughout the game. So now for a bit of indulgence. I do find it really interesting still to see the many uses these units are put to throughout the course of the war.

Shiranui

This destroyer, as I've mentioned before, is the reason I found WITP. My GF works in a small town in Surrey, called Dorking, and there is a very good old model shop there. Dorking Models.

It's the kind of place that is stacked to the ceiling with kits, paints, detail sets, decals and amazing completed sets constructed by the owner. I hadn't built one in years, since my early teens. I loved looking through all of the ships, especially. Lots of small Japanese kits, including the Shiranui. I was reading a book taking place in Japan at the time, and in it there was a Mt. Shiranui. Thanks to the wonder of smartphone technology, once I was intrigued by the name, I looked it up.

After this interesting coincidence I bought the kit, built the ship, and soon thereafter found WITP to try to satiate my returning interest in WWII.

The Shiranui in this game started out with the KB hitting Pearl. She stayed as a KB escort until her first conversion, after which she shepherded AOs around for a while. Then she took up an ASW role and worked the area near Balikpapan if I remember correctly. Currently she's heading back to Yokohama to become a CV escort again, helping ensure the safety of the brand new Katsuragi on her way to Tulagi to join the KB.

Oregon Maru: 1 June 1943

This transport has been plying back and forth from the HI to various locations in the extended empire during the campaign. It has hauled troops, supplies, resources, and most recently, fuel.

Currently it's sitting in the port in Osaka waiting for escorts to head back the Singapore with a load of supply, then return with fuel to keep the economy humming. The Aden class especially is being used in this capacity now as they're highly expendable and carry a good amount of cargo.

14th Tank Regiment: 1 June 1943

This is the only ground unit I've been following. It started in Malaya, helping race down the peninsula and at times cutting off Brithish units before they got to the safety of Singapore. It then was instrumental in the conquest of Burma, heading up into the mountains to help gain footholds along the Chinese borders before the big divisions arrived to push farther into China.

It was then sent to the Pacific where the tank commanders have been relaxing on the beaches of Kaweijalen for the past year.

Nagato Maru: 1 June 1943

This Ansyu-C class xAK was converted to a PB early in the war and has had an active career since. Used primarily as an escort for troop and supply convoys from the HI, it has been to every theatre in the conflict. Later it made several daring fast transport runs to Western OZ and has been used in that role extensively in the Solomons and New Guinea area, based at Rabaul.

On one of these runs several months ago both it and another PB were hit by Mk 14 TT and they have been repairing slowly in the port of Buka. They are about to be sent for the long journey back to Yokohama.

251 Ku S-1: 1 June 1943

Formerly the Tainan Ku S-1, this is one of the two 45 plane elite fighter groups that starts the campaign on Formosa. They cleaned the skies over Luzon before heading to Malaya, Java, and then Burma, and were equally successful in each theatre. The group has accounted for 193 kills!!!

After the dominance of the available A6M airframes began to wane, I gutted the majority of highly experienced pilots form the group and sent them to other units and into reserve. Another group of pilots has grown in experience with the unit and most are in the 60-70 experience level now, based in Mandalay.

This will be one of the first groups to be allocated the George airframe once it becomes available in July 43.

This sub is one of my favorite units in the war, and in spite of it's precarious position in the front lines of the Pacific war, it has made it through a few scares to survive into mid-43.

Currently it's working a patrol off the approaches to Sydney, both for recon and the hope of a lucky opportunity. I don't have much hope for the attacking ability of these big cumbersome IJN subs at this point in the war with Allied ASW improving continually, but they do provide good information.

THE ECONOMY: 1 June 1943

The economy seems to be running along well. I'm up to 1.65 million in HI banked. I'm shooting for a million per year, so that's on target. I've just shut down some airframe and engine production as my pools are getting high for certain airframes that will be phased out soon.

It's really helped that I have the extra HI/LI from China, as well as the resources and oil to drive them internally. Port Arthur is getting dangerously low in both oil and fuel (about 15k for each, I just noticed

) and I'm starting a CS convoy from Singapore right away. I'm definitely making a dent in the oil/fuel stores at Singapore. In the last half year the totals have gone down from over 2 million fuel/200k oil to 1.25 million fuel/25k oil.

My tracker hasn't been working for a while, so more updates on the economy will come as soon as I can get it going again. If anyone notices anything glaring in the numbers here please let me know. It's been kind of econ-by-instinct lately.
