Withdrawing air units from a closed field in face of overwhelming odds ?

I may have done that in the DEI a time or two. Same thing, but smaller scale.

Yes, the scale can be a bit magnified in 44!

I've seen similar in 42 in the DEI, but it is much smaller and therefore with fewer ramifications.

I would imagine it as a flying boat transport. In my specific case there were also ships in port, but not the kind that could collect the units in game. That doesn't mean at a pinch in a real-life scenario they wouldn't have gotten all of those crews out if that was seen as important.

This is really though about how we deal with the abstracts of the game. Bullwinkle's point is very important, not because it justifies what we've chosen to do but because he highlights the abstraction working in many facets of the game. I'm much more interested in this as an objective discussion. How are those Hellcat or SBD replacements meant to get across the Pacific if not by ship. But what ship? There is no ship taking them in game, just as there is no actual transport picking up pilots going back to pools. It is implied abstractly by the design.

So I completely agree something is fishy about planes withdrawing from a closed field, but because this is how many facets of the game work by design, it seems something that needs to be worked out by players, one way or another and in advance so there is no difficulty once it occurs in game. That's all.

Long, long ago in one thread or another a dev disclosed that the team tried to work in actual transport of replacement aircraft by ship. (Not sure about pilots.) It would slow op tempo by orders of magnitude. I believe it was dropped due to complexity and because it would massively torque other areas of game balance. Many players now have trouble getting generic "supply" where it's needed. Imagine, in the current UI, having to ship, by model, with weeks of lead time, every plane to be used in front line areas. Insanity ensues.

In the old days I used to rail about the submarine game's abstractions. That crews need no R&R before spinning out on yet another two-month patrol. That a single sub can't take out 2-3 ships in one attack as happened many times in RL. That targets not worth two fish are sometimes assigned four. But I stopped railing when I saw that, on balance, the thing . . . balances.

Replacements don't fly in even to functioning airfields. They arrive unready, which means they are shipped in by non AKV transports that are abstracted.

I appreciate the position that as long as abstracts balance it's better not to try and look under the carpet where the details have been swept to examine how its supposed to be working.

I just don't believe these abstracts are balancing.

SUBS: A sub hits a good 18 knot AK near Hollandia that is bringing infantry here. It could have made it as fires were out after day one, but ...

SOUTH PACIFIC: ... Jocke sends in 8 Fletchers to Hollandia and decimates the transports landing troops there. Only one makes it out, but the escorts are relatively undamaged. Also, the good news is 75% of the troops land, and there is plenty of supply here to get replacements. I did have a CA led SAG a few hexes away that was coming in to protect but made it too late, and didn't react in. Such is the story lately. I'm just one step too late.

Since 44 hit not only has Jocke moved with purpose and taken some good risks, I have not played as tightly and meticulously as I'd like. Something about having all of my units splayed out over multiple bases and having to constantly retreat has gotten into my psyche. I have to fix this and soon, taking time to consider counter play and really trying to deceive in my movements more than ever. It all takes time, though. I can't rush turns at this stage.

On a good note, the Jack is turning into my Corsair killer. Well, not really, but it seems to hold it's own better than anything else. I got better than 1:2 against elite F4U-1 and 1A sweeps at Aitape on the 3rd, taking down about 12 Corsairs it seems for a loss of 19 J2M3. I'm moving these back to Hollandia where there is an HQ and 50 Tojos to support.

NORTH PACIFIC: I see ships gathering at Kodiak. I'm assuming a move would come up here soon. Looks like there is only something like LSTs and DDs for now, but more could be hiding in the shadows. All bases are ready for a last defense and staunch troops are slowly filling the Kuriles in anticipation of the tightening of the noose.

Naval assets will be minimal up here. I did a count recently and I have 84 DDs available now. I've lost 49, the Allies have lost 66 according to my reports. I have 10 CAs, having lost 8, and the Allies have lost 12 by my reports. I have no idea how many they would have now. I have all of the BBs still, which is somewhat comforting. None of any of this in is the North. I'll have to get a dedicated SAG ready to patrol at Paramushiro.

WEST OZ: Darwin is still getting support troops in it looks like. I saw a small TF go in, which shows a TK. Interesting. Could be a tanker getting the place ready for PTs?

BURMA: More interesting things. Jocke attacked near Lashio, getting a 1:2 but dishing out relatively equal casualties, which helps him. He did bring anti-tank guns. Smart man. My new unit will not be in time if this continues. I am transferring the Thai division that had built nice level two forts next door over into this contested hex. If it doesn't get crushed while moving that should help things hold for a few weeks until more IJA troops can arrive. I don't want the backdoor to collapse now, especially not being able to control which direction we retreat.

Also the 120k troops between Bassein and Prome are on the move. One part shows movement into Prome, where I have 750AV and level 6 forts. The other is pointed toward the hex across the river down the rail, where I have 1200 AV with arty and level 2 forts in +2 terrain. I have 3 divisions reserve and I'm committing the tanks but may hold the rest in Rangoon in case this is a feint and he turns around for Bassein, level 5.8+ with 450 AV, which would be my next move if I were the Allies.

Prome would be good for him too, taking away easy road access to my frontline, and forcing me to protect the jungle hex next to Prome. I might decide to pull back a layer with the big stack should this occur. We'll see. Level 6 forts are nothing to sneeze at, and I could get a lot into Prome by the time he goes over the river. I bombed these troops with 80+ Helens doing some damage on the 4th with no resistance.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Still loading up tanks. Takes forever. One more day hopefully for the last two TFs to make a move and brave sub-infested waters toward Truk.

I almost forgot to mention an important development. The Sam is now officially in R n D!!!

One factory of 30 is repaired and 3% toward one month advance has been achieved. Four more are getting close, the nearest with 4 more points to go. Not sure if I'll have any CVs to put these on in 9-10 months when they arrive, but it's worth a shot!

The Ki-83 has one factory with only 3 points left to fix as well, which is also exciting.

A shot of the now abandoned So Pac area, with a lot of New Guinea as well. It's too bad I wasn't able to get more out of the Rabaul area. It's collapse was a bit sudden. Being the first time around this is all an experiment, and hopefully I can learn how to make a fighting withdrawal more effectively in the future.

As for the next steps, Northern New Guinea bases are garrisoned fairly well, other than Dagua. I had hoped to fly more in there, but now I'm a bit short of Flying boat transport, and there is no field. It has a naval guard and a base force Coy. Aitape and Wewak both have 400 AV behind level 4 forts. Hollandia has 220 AV and Vanimo is a bit light with only 50 AV. I can fly more in here though hopefully.

Currently I'm still trying to get a few more units out of places like Madang. Not sure if it's possible though.

OK, to me, an airport closed means closed for "normal" operations. Doesn't mean abnormal operations aren't ocurring. C47 and equivalents (Tabby) are rough field, short field capable and everyone used them for evac purposes beginning in 1941 and kept on using them until ... well they are still flying aren't they? Just because you can't get a squadron of CAP up doesn't mean you can't get a couple of ac in and out every hour. Cactus AF operated that way for a couple of months in early autumn '42.

A lot of things are clearly abstracted in the game ... pilot and ac replacements being one example. Clearly, these get shuttled in and out all the time, but you don't have control of the transports doing this.

SUBS: Another escort lost, this time the E Kamome to the Templar near Sabang.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Gasmata and Talsea fall. He's really getting into taking each base. I guess i he prepped for them he might as well.

Some 2E try to close the Madang airfield. I've been getting a bit out, but not anymore it looks like. Maybe one more day of lift here.

Feels like some shifting around is happening, but I have no idea where or how. I would bet a lot of fighters are getting over to OZ now and getting ready for Darwin to get enough support to hold them.

DEI: I see some ships arriving near Darwin. I'll try to sweep there and get a few Judys in to go for them from Bathurst. That base should get wiped soon by 4Es. Surprised it hasn't happened yet. I'm a bit concerned in general that I don't have enough support at any base and that it's be really difficult to fight off concentrated 4E strikes as well as uber-sweeps like I've seen. Anything in 8-11 hex range should be virtually undefendable, and only the KB could really stop a concerted attack.

BURMA: The troops near Lashio get pounded from the air. If this keeps up they will not hold. The Thai division is probably 5 days out. The 1/3 division more like 10-12 days away still.

Elsewhere it's become apparent what Jocke is up to now near Toungoo and Prome. He has moved all of the troops out of the hex near Prome that is defended by one of my bigger stacks. He's moved them out to the road hex near Magwe, so now they can quickly head into the hex with the larger stack. Interesting move. I think he'd have to get about 8k AV here to move me right away. Maybe 7k AV would do it over time, but he doesn't have time. I can get a few tank divisions over in a few days, and in 8-10 I'll have another 1-2 infantry divisions able to march in. Could get tense.

Troops between Prome and Bassein still show movement but I am now nearly convinced these are feints, and he will turn them around after I have shifted troops. I still have a reserve in Rangoon though to add in wherever he does decide to take this stack.

CENTRAL PACFIC: I've just gotten ships into Abemama and will now try to extricate the remnants of the Amphibious brigade there, pieces of which were lost after transports were hit here by US CVs. No sign of any US naval activity in the area yet.

My tracker is acting a bit funny on the global report page lately, but this should at least show that we're still hanging in there economically. I think the fuel and oil conservation have had some effect, and levels are looking decent for now. Supply is good for the time being.

SUBS: The Ro-34 hits a transport near N. OZ, sinking her in two attacks. About 3-5 air attacks on Allied subs are being claimed each turn. I'd say based on the experience of the crews that would mean almost one a day on average actually getting hit.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Some things are getting sloppy for the Allies, as he's not escorting or sweeping at Madang in front of the 2E bombing runs there. I'll fly some Tojo IIc into Manus, which has some damage so he likely won't expect this, and try to hit them.

DEI: After a successful sweep knocking down about 10-12 Kittyhawks at Darwin, another sweep comes over and finds nothing up. Great, I thought, the Judys will have a free run. Not so fast. In the afternoon 6 Kittyhawks made it up and completely scored around my escort of 17 (!) A6M2, with no contact at all, and hit the Jusdys, shooting down 8! What's up with that?

The next day Jills went in without even the false escort and found no CAP, hitting a clutch of xAKs in the hex and likely sinking a few. Must be a supply run, or possibly fuel. I'm sending a few small TFs in to see if they can finish the job.

BURMA: Jocke is indeed combining his two bigger stacks into a massive army, likely 6-7k AV, but possibly bigger. They should all be in the hex with my biggest stack of 2700 AV (and a ton of arty) in a day or so. The tanks might make an attack if he takes his time, but if he goes right away, they won't.

ALL Allied bombing in Burma has shifted to this hex, so there is no mystery now about the intent of recent moves. The bombing has been ineffective, but I'll move in 4 air groups to Toungoo to get a try for them tomorrow. Many sweeps precede the attacks, and he now has 40 plane Corsair groups, which is a very daunting prospect. He's losing quite a number of 4E and 2E here each day due to flak. Some outright, but a lot to ops from flak damage. When I say a lot that just means 5-6 but still that is a good number if it continues daily.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Bettys went for small ships at Baker, getting nailed by Hellcats.

The industry report looks okay right now. I am using too much fuel for shipping currently as the KB is out moving to a new port at Davao. I feel this is just enough out of sight and also close enough to hit both sides of the DEI and the Central Pacific. I've also sent a Fleet HQ here and the support ships will arrive soon.

SUBS: So far the Super-E aren't seeming so super. I put together an ASW TF of three and sent them into an area filled with air search and Allied subs. Contact has been made each turn with no resulting attack, and now the Triton has sunk E no. 8! I'll keep up the pressure, but the US subs are just very good in 44.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Manus is invaded. Only one division comes in and faces five Naval Guard type units totaling just under 300 AV with 4 forts. Bombardments will probably ruin these though.

The set up Tojo strike jumping the bombing runs to Madang worked like a charm and downed 8-10 planes for one loss. Just got to be aggressive and make him pay if he isn't completely careful all of the time. Now these planes will hightail it out of Manus back to Aitape.

DEI: Jacks and Georges do well against Corsairs on the 9th, getting about 1:1 for the day for the first time ever, with 12 F4U-1A listed as lost. The next day was not as successful, with nearly an entire group of Jacks lost as Lightnings are also at Darwin now. Oh, well. A nice small dent in the Allied machine.

Disappointingly my naval units would not move to attack shipping at Darwin. Why? Not sure. I suspect it could have to do with air superiority, but they were set to get in and out at flank and only had 9 hexes to go, so it's a bit of a mystery. The main CA led TF went one hex the 9th, then another one hex on the 10th!

now it's all too late as an Allied surface TF is at Gove and the damaged ships are in Darwin port under heavy CAP.

BURMA: This is definitely not a stacking limits game. Over 220k Allied troops attacked today and achieved just a 1:2 (which I feel quite fortunate about

) against our 110k between Prome and Toungoo. I count 11 Allied divisions here!! That's a lot of power, and now it's a lot less, as his losses and disablements total between 1500-1700 AV or infantry, engineers and tanks. He was especially hit hard in engineers, I guess working against the forts built by our forces here. We lost a LOT of guns, too many. Most anti-tank units especially are gutted. It's good that the Tank divisions moving in have built-in anti-tank guns and that we have a lot of supply here.

This feels good for now. Another challenge met on a temporary basis at least. All other feints have been stopped near Prome and there are some 42 units moving from the Ramree road. Not sure what that is all about. I'll have to get better recon on those. He could be getting me over-committed to the big stack and then be planing to move around that again to the previous spot near Toungoo and the back-door area near Taung Gyi and Lashio. Two more months of this and it could be a bit easier when the Monsoon comes, especially since all of my units are on good roads. His are as well, but his main supply has to come down a small yellow track from Ramree, so that could be a squeeze during that time.

CENTRAL PACFIC: I've chosen now to evac the HQa on Roi Namur and the other good units nd leave a minimal combat presence. I can't hope to challenge Allied CVs here now so why have air support? Better off putting this in the Marianas.

While I know these guns are not ideal, the 47mm anti-tank guns for the IJA have been holding their own in Burma. It helps that this is a static battle front where they've been able to dig in I think.

SUBS: The RO-34 sighted a CL led TF heading toward Darwin. Too late for my surface units now unless I bring in the BBs.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Merauke falls. Now I really have to be on my toes in the DEI. A naval contingent also has to show themselves I think. Just a visual deterrent to easy moves.

Manus gets another US infantry division. Obviously he also thought one might take a while. Now this should fall within the week. I'm still getting some troops out of various locations, but it's a dribble now missing a few big patrol and transport groups. Seems he is still planning to get Rabaul and that area completely isolated, possibly even invading it. It's ripe for the picking, but I hope he brings a lot so it wipes out most of the weak units there. All I need is a bunch more stuck in the jungle on an island! At least destroyed I can buy them back and get something more going on the next line back.

NORTH PACIFIC: Still no moves up here. I'm beginning to think he may not make a move.

DEI: I had a good long turn assessing what still needs work down here. Virtually every base has some kind of garrison, but of course I have few counter-invasion troops right now, at least for another two months. The KB will have to be involved. BBs wil need to get messy. This is the place where I have to sue all I have to keep him back for as long as possible. It's fun but tense. I'm considering sending the 4 fast BBs to Darwin to bombard and tangle with the CL TF there.

In a futile attempt to hit the CLs a Jill group was annihilated along with it's George escorts at Darwin. I still don't have enough air power or support, but I guess that's to be expected. There are so many bases, and he can knock out individual ones easily.

WEST OZ: One units has moved into the Exmouth hex by land. I have no idea what. I have an SNLF with 6 forts here still. I'll need to get recon on the Perth area, so I might have to use this base for a few days to base some Judys.

BURMA: No more major events here in the last couple of days. I'm seeing a retreat of some units toward Prome and toward Magwe from the big stack near Toungoo. I've stopped further reinforcements, as it seems he won't go all-in here. I've got the two tank divisions with one fort built each to shore things up and that should be fine. He's still giving this a lot of attention from the air though.

In the meantime, Bassein has almost gotten to level 6 forts. Pegu did reach level 6 and Moulmein is now climbing toward that as well. Chang Mai just went to level 5. The bases around Pisanoluke are all approaching level 5, and the Burma/Thai shore is more secure with the addition of a division at Tavoy and a brigade at Mergui.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Tabiteuea is now getting some units flown out as the last remaining fortress in the Marshalls/Gilberts. Once this is complete I should have a good garrison at each of the North New Guinea bases. If I have another few weeks.

Thinking about the B-29

It should be coming soon. I am scurrying to get industry and oil covered with some fighters protection, but obviously with only two night fighter groups, I can't do much in that area. As I understand it, they're pretty useless anyway. I have one at Bangkok and I'll put another at Soerabaja.

The map below shows distances from the current base for 4Es in Burma, Chittagong. He could easily use Ramree Island, but of course that' smote in range for a night strike of my own, or a daring bombardment.

DEI - B-29

For the DEI Darwin will soon host a massive air force, I'm sad to say. Nothing I can do will stop this from happening, but maybe I can keep it suppressed at first by hitting ships moving supply and men into the area at least. From here Balikpapan and Soerabaja can be hit by B-29s, and Babo and Boela are toast from current 4Es once he decides to hit them. I've been getting oil out until they're both under 2k most of the time, so at least they've been profitable.

Ambon will also be under threat which is a major base.

Truk is becoming compromised now with Manus about to fall. I have about 100 fighters here, and I've heard the AA is one of the toughest arrays the IJ field based on the fort, and I have other mobile AA units here as well. Still, I will phase out it's use as a major naval base and move those forces to the Marianas, Babeldaob and Davao.

13 - 14 March 1944

SUBS: The Triton, which a few days ago sank one of our new Es, hit the xAP Asama Maru between Luzon and Formosa. I never use this routs, as it's heavily patrolled and constricted. These ships were returning and I failed to set waypoints for them, so they chose the most direct route. There are two good things about this attack. One, the stricken ship has only 43 float damage (!!) and made it to Aparri to disband in port for a few weeks to repair. Two, this will possibly encourage subs to work this area which is lightly travelled, keeping them away from the more central sea routes and the coast of China. I have some ASW Es working the area and a lot of planes searching.

The Seadragon hits CA Nachi near North New Guinea as it moves in to protect a convoy landing at Sarmi. The damage is light enough [10-11(9)-10(10) able to do 25 knots] to continue here until the troops are unloaded, then move back to the HI for a repair. This will take away our only SAG in the area and nothing new will arrive until BBs are finished repairing in Yokohama.

The retreating Allied SAG near Darwin runs over not one but two IJN subs, sinking I-5 and damaging RO-110 with 65 float. At least it's out of the Darwin area now.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Manus has not yet been attacked, but with all of this bombardment it may fall immediately. Namatani is now almost devoid of IJ troops as the latest base transports have worked on. Kaveing is down to vehicles and guns as well, with part of one base force still unlifted. Ontong Java had a garrison unit which is now moving back to Kusai, then on.

NORTH PACIFIC: Nothing.

WEST OZ: I've chosen to begin taking units off of Bathurst Island. Not much will be accomplished there once 4Es hit the base. The Alied unit still sits silent at Exmouth, not even trying a bombardment there. Recon will show what is happening at Geraldton in the next few days, and Glen-equipped subs are working off Perth.

BURMA: The bombers have gone back to hitting the backdoor stack near Lashio. The Thai division is now here, giving us 550AV with two Arty units and an HQ. This should hold easily against the Chinese Corps, even with air bombardment. The new 1/3 division made it to the hex SW of Lashio to block that path.

Something looks interesting from recon at Chittagong. It is showing 3 fighters and 349 bombers (and 600+ auxiliary) in base. Hmmmm ... .

CENTRAL PACFIC: Troops are moving off of Roi Namur and Kweijalein, leaving a small defensive front there, just enough to require prep and bombardment.

Allied recon has been extensive and thorough lately. Some examples:

This worries me a bit, as I still need to get another 200 AV into Dagua, a dot base, to feel somewhat secure there. It has only an SNLF now. I have units slated, but air lift by flying boat is the only safe method at this point. Wewak has 411 AV. Hollandia has 250 AV and an HQa.

TF 475 shadowed by Allied Recon at 113,109 near Truk

Truk is a target now, and could be hit any day. I'm slowly moving ships out, some with troops on them. I'll leave an AKE and an AG, some ACM and AMc, and a few xAKL and PBs in the base for the long run, inviting attacks that could do more damage to the Allied bombers than they would to the shipping, if flak and fighters work as they should.

One would think you haven't played the Allied side much if you think that represents an Allied reinforcement turn.

I have never seen a reinforcement any where near that large for the Allies on any given turn.

Allied reinforcements come in steadily almost every day, but they come in dribs and drabs.

One would think you haven't played the Allied side much if you think that represents an Allied reinforcement turn.

I have never seen a reinforcement any where near that large for the Allies on any given turn.

Allied reinforcements come in steadily almost every day, but they come in dribs and drabs.

One would be correct.

I haven't played the Allies in a PBEM, but did get into 43 against the AI when I started. I did remember some very big hauls on various dates and I know Jocke has complained of the overwhelming loads several times that begin in 43. No big deal either way, but it did spark my curiosity.

I went into one of my test games, and lo-and-behold, two days after the date of that game, on March 15, 1943, the Allies get what a player of the Japanese side could only dream of! (As it should be. My mouse hand is sore enough as it is).

The list I posted above is also over two days, and includes a few previously destroyed and bought back units. I'm definitely looking forward to an Allied campaign in the future.

BURMA: The 3/15 turn is still painful to think about. I ran it full of anticipation, actually a bit of dread, since I'd sent multiple sweeps and 75+ 2E bombers to a deep Allied base at Chittagong. I was nearly positive my recon had been faulty, or it was a one-day lapse that would be filled in by 300 Allied fighters before my planes arrived.

Alas, it was even worse! Where is the sepuku emoticon when I need it?

My four sweeps came in perfectly before the bombers and hit ... air! Then bombers came through perfectly escorted and hit ... ground troops!

I had set them wrong, and it was a day when the Allies either couldn't or didn't leave base for one reason or another. 300+ Alied 2E and 4E bombers were on the ground, and I mis-set my expert bomber pilots to hit the troops! Ok. I can't speak of it anymore.

This is a once in a year opportunity I squandered. I've been trying since Portland Roads was built to level 9 and loaded up to 800-900 planes in early 43. I never did get to it, or to Port Moresby, as they had CAP in abundance and plenty of obstacles for a naval bombardment in place. Now this.

With a heavy heart I moved the bombers back to Bangkok and prepared for the retaliation to come. Strangely, nothing happened. Just a normal bombing run against troops near Lashio. Jocke can at times be quite focused on a single objective, which works both for and against him. My troops are beginning to show signs of deterioration, but my airfields are still open, and recon again showed 3 fighters at Chittagong with 9/10 detection.

In light of this I've decided to go all-in once more. Call me crazy, but I think even if he gets some CAP in there, he might not put enough to stop a larger raid with more sweeps (hopefully) preceding it. I've prepped by sending a recon unit to Lashio so it shows an icon (as we're on the official patch, still giving Allies pre-turn recon of whether a base has planes or not) and I've sent one Helen group and Franks there. Five Helen groups go to Toungoo, which has an HQa and 200+ support, also showing an air-icon for the past few weeks due to repairing planes there. Oscars and a Tojo CAP go here as well. Naval bombers head out from the relative security of Rangoon, with 120+ added in to the strike escorted by A6M3a groups with 65 exp pilots. Two more Helen groups fly from here and three groups of Georges sweep. One more Helen group is flying from Chang Mai. This is the biggest raid I've tried in over a year. It's about time to use those 80+ exp pilots that bombed in China and have only been flying ASW since.

Also to deal with are new Allied troop movements near Rangoon as 120k troops are heading (apparently) for the hex next to Rangoon on the road to Prome. Plenty of time to get here, as that is a long bridge-less transit and I'll get 3+ divisions and arty with forts ready and waiting.

One benefit of my terrible settings mistake above is that the bombers then hit these Allied troops the next day, likely changing them into combat mode and slowing them.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Manus falls. Now it's a matter of whether the troops will stay on the island retreated, or are destroyed and able to be bought and rebuilt. I've gotten most troops into Sarmi now and the TFs are about to retreat there. Vanaimo and Dagua are the next in line for reinforcements.

DEI: A large SAG is sent from Singers to Soerabaja to prepare for bombardment runs to Darwin. That base now shows 150 fighters and 53 bombers. I'd like to take a few of those out. The Yamato class will be involved.

I had cruisers giving try here on the 16th but they didn't even hit the fields (?!).

BURMA: The strike came through! In spite of a fairly strong CAP of 147 P-40 waves of Japanese planes were seen dropping their loads over Chittagong airfields. I set it correctly, took a chance, and in spite of some losses, feel this was definitely worth it. Over 250 Allied planes are reported destroyed in the air and on the ground, including a large number of transports. Over 100 C-47 were knocked out, but losses also included Dakota III, C-87 and C-46 airframes that I know are not as plentiful as the C-47. At least 45 P-40 were downed as well by numerous sweeps and even some of the escorting planes, which was nice.

Sweeps did well and Georges showed their quality against the P-40, and even Oscars did well in an escort role. All but one group went in escorted, and though he did break through to hit most of the bomber waves, all got to the fields and dropped ordnance. One odd thing is that no damaged planes are listed. Is this because the fields were so over-stacked? At least 20 4E were destroyed, probably repairing, while the others were away hitting my troops, the most I've destroyed in one day during the war. Since the fields had at least 40 damage after the turn, perhaps a fair number were damaged coming in from their raids as well.

We lost 155 planes, mostly Oscars (45) and Helens (42) but also a good number of IJN 2E bombers and their pilots. This could hurt a bit, but these are not the top quality pilots of the beginning, which are mostly in the KB now, but are pilots trained for TT only, all at about 55 exp by now.

This at least felt like I didn't completely waste this opportunity. I know it could have been better, but this was not too bad. Jocke didn't seem to upset, but he wasn't happy either. It's been a while since I could do something offensively, so I'll rest on this for a day or two as I crawl back in my shell of Rangoon and look for more opportunities.

SOUTH PACIFIC: This was a difficult turn in So Pac. I knew this base was vulnerable, but thought I had enough to ward off para-drops and snap invasions. Troops were literally moving to Biak to be flown in here when BBs wrecked the Guard unit here and four para units dropped on the 17th at Dagua. The base held for one day after Jocke sent units in without changing them to combat mode, then went under after massive air and sea bombardments and another shock attack.

A shift has occurred again. I may have to pull back one more step and hope to hold farther back for more than a week. Hollandia should be tougher, as should Vanaimo and Sarmi. Aitape and Wewak are strong now, but I don't think I'll be able to rely on the fact he might actually invade there. He most likely will not. One good thing is that this is a dot base, and thus will take an extra week to get going. I'll look for opportunities to use nearby BBs to inhibit things once it gets going toward a level 1.

Jocke's first use of paras is decisive and timely for the Allies. I'm not sure now what to do here on North New Guinea. I guess the appropriate method would be another pull-back from Wewak and Aitape. Somewhere I have to hold him for a few months at a time, and I need strongly garrisoned bases near each other to do that. Maybe Hollandia/Vanaimo and Sarmi can be a stumbling block for a while.

Just as the post-script to the last turns, there is still damage on the base at Chittagong. There are still 300+ bombers listed in the airfield with only 85 fighters. There are about 300 auxiliaries now listed. I decided for the turn of the 20th to try another limited attack. I'm writing this here so it's on record. Just about to watch the replay and feeling tense.

This is when things get fun! Or turn out not to be.

Interesting results, but nothing as major as the last strike at Chittagong.

SUBS: Subs have been quiet lately. I fear though that Jocke has either seen or guessed well about where the KB is hiding as three subs have been on station at Davao for a few weeks. On the other hand they're not hanging out at Babeldaob or Balikpapan, two other likely spots. I've sent in two ASW teams of new Es. I have Hiryu's Jills flying ASW as well as Jakes, so these subs might suffer soon.

RO-105 got 4 TT off at CL St. Louis before getting an ear-splitting DC attack thrown back. It then got more hits against another amphib TF coming into Dagua. This would have been a good turn to use the KB as the subs made the transports slow and have to sit in the open during daylight. I'll remember that for the next time he comes.

SOUTH PACIFIC: Things got very interesting here as I tried a behind the lines incursion. He hasn't closed bases behind him and most of the Solomons has good fields, are TT enabled still (!!) and can even support and repair some planes. I threw some Bettys in to attack at Finschafen as there was no CAP up and BBs listed in port! Guess what? Two 800kg bombs reported on Prince of Wales!!!

That is almost surely a trip to the repair yards at Sydney, and 'heavy fires' were burning after the attack.

That is not all. A Frances group also attacked an amphib TF and put 2 TT into xAP Santa Barbara. No troops on board, which is too bad. This wil again probably make him have to deal with rear bases and spread out the CAP.

NORTH PACIFIC: He's on the move! Two TFs sighted, one with DDs and another with LSTs. Subs interact with them, but my Jakes were set to Naval and search at only 2-3 hexes away from Cold Bay, so nothing has gotten in there yet. I brought some Kates in closer too and readied a small SAG that departed Yokohama for Paramushiro on the 20th. One modern CL and three DD is all I can spare right now, but timed correctly, they could make a difference. Looks like next turn would be D-Day.

WEST OZ: Another unit moved into Exmouth, but no indications yet of any attacks. I have some bombardment TFs nearing Darwin, but I'm worried they're going to stall again and not get in there.

BURMA: After the first major attack Jocke has gotten wary, as he should. Helens hit Chittagong again, with only some 100+ P-40N5 on CAP. He still didn't commit anything good, possibly because the field was still a mess and it might affect the top class fighters' performance. Anyway, we hit the fields well, but only took out a handful of planes and a lot of fighters. At some cost however, as 12 Georges are lost as well as another 9 Oscars and 11 Helens.

The Allied stack moving toward Bassein is still showing the icon, so either he's spreading me out nicely or he's really going in. Hard to imagine he would without 4E support and they've never hit this base in the clear. Too close to Rangoon for daily raids I guess, and I am keeping fighters up with range to interdict there. Now he's had to take the 4E base back somewhere else also which gives time both for troops near Lashio and possibly at Bassein. Here is pretty good list of what's in that hex at least. Those Chinese units aren't going to like the tanks I have across that river if they keep going!

I thought the 800kg bombs were specially developed for the PH raid and were unavailable after that.
