SUBS: Trigger misses a convoy and gets 5 hits.

S/SW PAC: The US infantry regiment at Kaveing hit hard, dropping forts here to 2 and getting a 1:1 result. The base fell on the 16th effectively completing the isolation of Rabaul.

Also, up on New Guinea the US forces that walked into Aitape arrived and found 400+ AV of well supplied Japanese forces there to meet them. This is what I intended for all of North New Guinea, but was too slow to get it together at Sarmi. Still, these bases could hold him up as Sarmi will be slightly isolated until Hollandia and Vanaimo in particular are taken.

S DEI: Seeing shipping around Gove, I set some Jakes to bomb and Nicks to sweep the base.

BURMA: Jocke has since we shut down Akyab had all of his bombers at Calcutta. About 750+ fighters are also there, but around 120 of the best are still at Magwe, and these are the ones sweeping pre-bombing. I'm thinking of hitting this base, but it might be cost prohibitive, and I'm very low on pilots and airframes after the last few strikes. Might be more prudent to wait a bit.

The large stack that left the area NW of Toungoo has moved around onto the road to Prome, and now seems to be aiming for the hex between Prome and Bassein. I have about 10 days before it will then move into one of my areas of control. So troops are slowly marching back to this area. I'd like to force a river crossing, as there is a much better chance of his troops getting trashed in such a case, obviously. Risky though too, if we don't have adequate forces to give him a negative attack. He also will have the advantage bombing the Bassein or Prome troops in the clear. The ones in the jungle across seem solid and almost invulnerable to air strikes.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Intentions became clear in the Central Pacific. A giant BB led TF hit Wake with everything during the night. The Wake CD guns were about half disabled in this one strike. They got a few hits on BBs, but nothing that requires even a new paint job. The CV air strike hit more support troops, but the infantry is doing fine. The CD unit has DP guns, and even when it could possibly rest to recover guns after the BB bombardment it won't as it is now shooting (poorly due to high fatigue) at the air strikes. Well modeled for the DP guns but frustrating for getting the dedicated CD guns back on line!

SUBS: Aspro gets a good look at the KB today near Manila ,missing Ryujo with 4 TT. Crap. Well, at least we didn't lose he CVL and his CVs are accounted for in the Central Pacific. He could imagine I am moving the KB to the Singapore area, while in fact I'll be repairing and heading back to the Davao base soon.

S/SW PAC: The Allies keep bombarding at Aitape in spite of no resulting casualties. This is probably intended to suck supply, but there is a steady stream still able to flow from Hollandia, which is over 45k right now. Wewak on the other hand is untouched, but is moving into the red as it's path has been cut.

Two crippled subs that sought refuge in Rabaul are sunk by a B-25 raid.

S DEI: I'm beginning to wonder if he'll focus on this area at all. The several bombardments and show of air strength I've tried to put on down here has hopefully masked my complete vulnerability and lack of reserve troops. Keeping strong points like Ambon stocked with planes, even if they are training A6M2 groups, has hopefully given the impression that we're ready and waiting. In reality, I feel less than perfectly prepared.

BURMA: Prome gets pounded. I don't think based on this kind of a strike that I could successfully hold this base if he really went for it. The initial river crossing would be dicey, as if he brings a lot he could still be highly disrupted, get a negative modifier and lose a bunch of troops. If he doesn't bring as much he's guaranteed to lose a chunk of troops but might then bring in more behind that are fresh. I don't think he'll do this. If, however, he uses air strikes for a few weeks, gets disruption and fatigue up, then crosses with a ton of armor and good divisions, he could get a positive attack which would really trash a bunch of IJA units. I'll just have to keep checking out the situation and if it looks like he's prepping with a lot of these air strikes and the big stack has movement toward the base, I'll consider a pull-out to jungle territory.

The bombing of Prome signaled a lack of confidence in the effect of bombings on troops near Lashio that have been pounded continuously for weeks. The last minute arrival of the 39th/C saved this defense and likely closed the door for the time being up here, unless he commits more troops. My timing was very fotunate, and it's lucky he didn't decide to bomb and slow the reinforcement troops arrival.

Amazingly, I'm still holding the line I thought would last a month when I pulled back from the plains in 12/43, and although he's adjusting and sending a big stack around to attempt a break through, this feels like it's been a hugely positive delay to the Allied advance. If as Pax advocated I can hold Rangoon into the monsoon in Mid-May things should slow down over here a bit at that point. At least I think so.

Although supply dumps could get harder as he interdicts the area around Rangoon, I've been able to send in ships to Tavoy and Mergui mostly undetected. All fort building has stopped but I do have to support a lot of troops and CAP missions here.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake gets some more attention from CV air. I'm pretty happy with another long atoll assault right now. I'm going to get the KB fixed up and groups filled out. Fix up the BBs and reorganize the DDs once the 4/44 upgrades are finished and keep reinforcing the Western part of New Guinea if possible. I have two garrison units pulled from Salamua that can now fly in to bases there. A few new Guard units that can also fly in. Very important as many DDs and a CL led SAG are hanging around Sarmi in North New Guinea. I'll focus on the Sorong area first and then try to add more around Biak. No more leap-frogging!

The red line is the MLR now, and the white represents the next fall-back line. After that becomes untenable, the white circles represent fall-back points where troops will gather and I'll asses the ability to hold here while trying to prevent a flanking move through the jungles. The monsoon should help keep the Allies from making use of any routes that are not along roads. The Taung Gyi area retreat point is perfectly situated across a river with +3 territory. Rangon and Pegu will likely be good stalling points as troops are sent back to Moulmein and the area toward Chang Mai to set up a new line.

Watch out, I've never been able to hold Prome.  If it falls too fast, you might not have time to move the northern units out.  I'd get your next line behind Prome in place now if you can building forts.  The jungle hex behind Prome is far more defensible.

My plan is to let him take the time to get in place, as I slowly pull units from the frontline hexes, and then see what indications I have of his movement. He'll most likely get between Prome and Bassein and try to show movement to both, plus the hex across the river.

Currently I am pulling units back from the hexes North of Prome through that base and into the area surrounding Rangoon. I know he'll be wary of shocking into a base with 6 forts, even if it is in the clear. The problem is if I lose Prome, this could turn into a 'who's stack is bigger' fight one hex to each side of that base in the jungle. He'll want to bring everything through the Prome hex to get over the water and then has only two options of where to hit. The two marked with orange on the map. I could get 2k AV with arty, AA and HQs into both easily. Do I risk trashing my divisions in Prome or pull back early and forego the chance to ruin some of his? Chicken, anyone?

The other vulnerable area will be to the NE of Toungoo. Nothing is in that hex now, and I could probably only afford 1k AV in Toungoo and 500-700 AV in that spot, with little in reserve. Still, it'll take a while for him to maneuver around if he wants to go for that area, and to walk across country, then try to sustain attacks off road in the monsoon. The Prome vector looks more promising for him.

Maybe he'll go for Bassein, though. He is walking all of the way around when if he did want Prome he could have gone across the yellow road already. It's getting interesting, anyway.

Another new item was recently discovered, as I sent recon to Myitkyina to check it out, and there are 23 units there! I can't remember the exact numbers now but it seemed like support troops. I'll keep the recon flying and hopefully get more of a look. Is that earmarked for a strategic bombing base toward China, perhaps? Kunming's industry will be the first to go if that's the case, as he'll be able to sweep from there.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I'm traveling in the States right now, Boston and NYC. Very fun, but I wish spring would begin soon!

SUBS: The Allied subs are infesting waters in a wide area all around Truk, Babeldaob and the coast of New Guinea, but they're not hitting much lately in spite of quite a few contacts. I'm hoping this is due to the saturation of ASW air flights. The escorts doing an equally poor job of hitting the subs, though.

S/SW PAC: Jocke has been focusing bombers on Biak and continuing to bombard at Aitape, with little effect. I'm going to try to sneak some units by sea into Sorong, but it's dicey, as he's shown a willingness to hit forward bases with streaking DD flotillas.

In fact, on the 20th Jocke sent in 8 DDs, likely his Arleigh Burke TF, to hit Truk!! That was bold. He sinks one DD and CM Tokina, one of the last remaining big CMs in the IJN fleet. In turn he clears a mine with DD Healy, and the Jenkins looks in rough shape. I didn't hear the sinking sounds, so it's possible both will make it back. I've now moved some Judys in to make sure if he leaves ships hanging there is something to hit them. There was a lot of shipping about a day away, and all of it should arrive untouched to drop supply and get fuel to the base.

Rabaul is still getting a lot of attention trying to keep the fields closed.

S DEI: Some activity around Gove again. Units are on alert.

BURMA: A bit more quiet over here right now. Not sure what is in store.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Air strikes continue to hit the troops, but do a good job only on the CD unit and support troops. The infantry units are high moral, no disruption and have lost few men. Still 118 AV with level 6 forts and decent supply.

I think you're right : he'll move the stack between Bassein and Prome and from there he'll simulate attack moving towards all directions at same time (that are four, not three : Prome, Bassein, and the two forest hexes. only one of these will be true of course!) Which ?? . Bassein to me is the less probable , is the less important strategically cause after the conquer you have to cross another river to go in hex with bad terrain. Prome is the second less probable cause, as you said, he already had the possibility to attack and he didn't and after that tou have other forest hexes.... If I'ld be Jocke, I'll cross towards the forest SE direction Pegu. I would try to attack the less possible in hex with defence bonus, so after that forest hex you have access tothe valley, clear hexes!! and more you can go for Pegu without any obstacle!!
Pegu is the door of Burma, once is closed all your army remains inside...
I think that he could conquer both Prome or Bassein without many problems, he could bomb you from the air raising disruption to levels that make your defence very weak, you've already seen it in the plains. he isn't doing it cause he's going to the jugular: Pegu!!
In my opinion you should reinforce those forest hexes behind the river and leave Prome and Bassein, but not very quick, just leave him believe that you'll stand there for some more turns...

His difficulty will be getting a positive result in crossing to the jungle hexes. If he doesn't, then I can move a bunch of stuff there and sit on it, with no option for him but to move back and go around, which takes a lot of time.

I'll be posting a bit more soon, maybe later tonight. So far behind now!

At last, a chance to do a report. A short one, but it'll get things rolling again.

SUBS: The DD Hamanami makes Sorong and will hang there after a near miss from a US sub. It has 70 system and some major float damage, so this could be it's final resting place if discovered.

S/SW PAC: More bombings of Biak. This could be the next destination for Allied interests. Also more bombing at Rabaul. He's really serious about not letting this get going again. It won't matter for a while until the air groups get back in Tokyo and rebuild, as I have no spares to place here even if there fields are left intact.

S DEI: More shipping around Gove. Looks to be moving toward Darwin.

BURMA: Bombing of Prome and also some Georges tangle with P-47s, getting crushed.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake gets more from the CV planes, but no sign of the invasion yet.

More strikes around Wake include a lot of Dauntlesses, making me think he's cycling the CVs and CVEs here. A good number of ops losses happening each day even though there is virtually no AA here now that the Wake Gun unit is trashed.

SUBS: The RO-34 is sunk near Gove by one of the convoys moving to Darwin. Looks like he's using a lot of low value ships over here for now.

S/SW PAC: Rabaul is bombed again by waves of 2Es. The fields are closed. This is really taking up a massive portion of the Allied strike force though, which is definitely better than having it pointed at the Southern DEI.

P-38 sweeps hit Babo where a group of Jacks gets even results, maybe slightly better after ops losses. These planes seem the only ones that can perform on par with Allied sweepers on occasion, and that's with them at 15k and only 40% CAP. They just get up fast and work well at that altitude.

Biak troops are bombed. Something is brewing here. Lots more ships around Sarmi. I've got strike forces ready and I think I'll divert the 5 BB TF that was going to bombard Darwin up here along with 4 CL 2 DD.

CHINA: Baseforces and fighters are getting in place in all industrial centers of China. Kunming, Changsha, Sian, Lanchow, Caton and Hong Kong will have one good fighter group plus some AA. He could and most likely will hit these at night though, for which there is no response.

S DEI: The inevitable build-up of Darwin is happening, as PTs are no stained there and small TFs are filling in supply and fuel I am betting. Our strikes manage to hit a few transports, but Jills get nailed going for the CL TF, landing one bomb on Nashville. I'll try some low fighter strikes from Bathurst as well.

BURMA: Prome and troops near Lashio are hit by bombing runs. More troops are now between Prome and Bassein, about 220k, and they're pointing toward Prome, Bassein and to the hex just across the river along the tracks. All of my units are retreating to the jungles and should be out of those bases within a week.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake is still being pounded, but no landing. The gun unit is nearly destroyed.

I'm kind of low on Flying boats now, especially the transport version. I've had to bring some Mavis back into service to run the route to Salamua. One big unit still can be fully lifted out, the base force originally at Milne Bay, which has walked through the jungles all of the way there.

SUBS: RO-39 picks off one of the supply ships moving to Darwin. I have three RO boats hovering between Gove and Darwin.

S/SW PAC: Georges on LR CAP interrupt the milk run to Biak and take out a few 4E. The concentration of ships at Sarmi has reached new levels, and the invasion is likely imminent somewhere in the Biak area. If it's Biak itself I at least have a good amount of troops there. Various units totaling almost 400 AV with nearly level 5 forts. Naval forces are a day away, but the air forces are set to get in there and MTB and MGB TFs are at Biak to possibly get in the way to slow the unloading, maybe giving air strikes the chance to hit troops on ships.

NORTH PACIFIC: Still nothing up North. I'm surprised he hasn't decided to come here. He likely knows I've pulled back most troops and there is little air support. A few CVEs and some LSTs could move things quickly up here.

S DEI: Air strikes are picking at the stream of little cargo ships heading toward Darwin, getting to quite a few. Still no Allied LR CAP over these, so we got some free shots. Even got a few good runs on the PTs with a George group. I'm thinking this will be a slow deliberate process of building up here and soon there will be the usual combo of good fighters, PTs, a few DD flotillas and some DB and B-25 skip bombers.

The time is crucial everywhere now. Knowing his CVs are in the Central Pacific, knowing the large concentrations of 4E and 2E bombers are in Burma and New Guinea, and guessing (from the lack of recon and sub sightings) that there is little moving up the SW coast of OZ all make me think there are still a few months before a real move into the DEI from this direction. I've still not seen any bombing of DEI bases, even. So more infantry can get in position, forts can build and we can get closer to even better airframes for the defenses.

BURMA: More bombings at Lashio. Not much else happening.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake takes a massive air hit again. When the landing comes the resistance will not be long lived here.

Jocke must have hundreds of these small slow cargo ships so a few lost here and there surely won't hurt him, but he is seemingly a bit lackadasical about protecting them.

This ship, the Siberoet, was a Dutch cargo ship that was sunk in the war in March 1942. It was later refloated and used by the Japanese under the name Shiritoko Maru, and was sunk by a US sub in 1944.

SUBS: Two subs interact with parts of the invasion fleet heading toward Biak during the night, but can't get a hit.

S/SW PAC: Between subs and patrol boats at Biak the Alied invasion fleets were still unloading during gthe day phase on the 27th at Biak. This set them up nicely for air strikes coming from Ambon and surrounding bases. Unfortunately none of these strikes went for the actual transports, but instead tried for combat ships instead. The LR CAP was present, the flak heavy, but some at least made it through for strikes. On the day only one US DD was sunk.

All of the stopping and starting of the unload must have caused some havoc though, as one APA is showing heavy damage, possibly from a collision. That is at least some good news. The bad news is that a full division, a regiment, a tank battalion and combat engineers are all unloaded. This will be a tough battle. I'll try to fly in more troops to augment incomplete units at Biak now. About half of the 49th regiment is at other bases nearby, and a garrison unit is only at 1/3 strength with the rest at Truk. If during the next few weeks those can get to the base I might be able to hold here for a while.

Tomorrow surface ships will enter the area, including a large BB TF. Fingers crossed.

S DEI: Corsairs at last came up from Darwin and crushed my sweeping Tojos. This base will soon be untouchable.

CENTRAL PACFIC: A day off at Wake today.

SUBS: Again no hits on ships heading to and from Biak with the undersea forces. Our BB TF does sink one sub on it's way to Biak though.

S/SW PAC: The BBs arrive too late to affect anything at Biak, but they are now there to protect the area or bombard Allied troops. The air strikes at least take out a few ships today, hitting the straggling APA President Jackson and a TF with APA President Hayes and two DD. That's better than usual at least. A mini-KB of the Mizuho and 3 CVE came within 8 hexes of Sarmi and it's strike was chewed up by CAP. It will retreat back to Babeldaob.

S DEI: Our SAG with a few CAs takes it's chances with the PTs but doesn't get to transports near Darwin. Sunk a few PTs with no hits.

BURMA: A few transports nailed near Akyab. No CAP up. Interesting. Troops near Lashio continue to take a beating. He hasn't been focusing on Prome and that area, so I'm assuming I have some time there still to move troops back and begin building forts.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake is invaded. The first attack fails but wipes out the gun unit completely and should take the base in a few days. This battle has been going for nearly a month, so that's fine by me.

Reinforcements: I was worried about the units that were originally CV based that had been used on land with Georges/Jacks and were withdrawn at Rabaul. Today several of the units showed up on the CVs with no planes! That's great, as I just moved them to land and will fill them up again.

The other units also came back to Tokyo, and I now will begin seeing some around, especially to China which will likely become a target for strategic bombing as of May 1.

I just got a signing report from a level 2/2 DL on Pearl Harbor. It lists 475 ships in port! Makes me wonder how many ships could actually have been here at any given time in reality. How much do we bend the limits of what was possible in this game? I'm sure I do it as well in places like Nagasaki and Singapore, although I know Singers actually has in reality a large anchorage outside the actual harbor.

Hi Obvert,
I can't hide mi surprise in how effective and how quick is Allied offensive in the islands and New Guinea! Almost every day a new base is sieged or conquered and the attack seems almost unpossible to stop! I used to think that Allied player had to prepare his troops carefully before landings to avoid huge disablements. Now I'm wondering if Jocke has planned for months exactly this hopping and his troops were prepared for all these objectives; I'm speaking franckly, I'm feeling that he didn't or he couldn't; at least he didn't until this deepness in your defences. It seems that your land defences are often too weak, despite the good forts builded; probably I'm wrong but I didn't see many antitank units in action; they should perform decently in defence against Us tanks; now instead we see that also with less AV than yours, small US armor battalions disable all your squads turn after turn 'till the falling of the base. You could also try to mine some bases, that could be a nasty surprise to his invasion fleet.
I saw a very good counterattack made by GreyJoy in his AAR with KB, during a strong Allied offensive, maybe you could try something similar exploiting that his carriers are busy with Wake.
Maybe these Japan position are doomed anyway or maybe Jocke will be forced to slow down to reorganize and prepare for next objectives; what do you think about?
I'm enjoying very much your AAR and I hope I'm not annoying with all this kind of advices
Edit:
I was wrong!! Yesterday night i read an allied AAR (not your opponent's of course). The Allied strategy IS prepping for bases months in advance. One division and a tank btn and combat engineers full prepping for a base, another army prepping for the next and so on. When the landing has happened and the base conquered the units start preparing for the last target of the chain.... It's very difficult to oppone to this strategy... What can we do as Japan? Maybe changing the dislocation of some units from stronghold to other bases ? Probably the Allied don't prepare for big bases like Rabaul, they just hop them! So you could take the unit in a major base but prepping for what you th guess will be an objective; you move the unit to the target at last making it very diffocult to take with the original prepped units.
I think there are also places like Mariannas were you have only few islands so you should strongly garrison all of them, also dot bases cause the Allied have a lot of Engineers the transform a rock in a fortress in very few turns.
. There must be a way

You're not annoying at all, no. Thanks for the suggestions.

I am as surprised as anyone about the speed of Allied advance. He has the troops to do it though. If he wanted to he could keep 4 divisions prepping for the next four targets while another four were invading in succession.

The Central Pacific is an afterthought now. Most troops have been pulled back. Wake was one of the few bases that actually had it's original defensive complement, and it was maxed out. After maybe 8-10 naval bombardments, daily strikes of 300-400 CV planes, and a final shock attack on landing, the troops were shattered. That's the way it goes and as it should be. There is nothing else to be done. The Allies should be able to do that in early 44. I briefly considered sending out the KB, but immediately thought better of it. Fighting outside LBA range gives the Allies an even bigger advantage now, and I'd rather keep the KB for the kind of counter attacks you're speaking of.

Jocke's invasion of Dagua, deep in my territory, was a surprise. That base was one that had not had sufficient garrison, but it was a dot base between two strong bases, and still I should have gotten to it earlier. The Japanese though don't always have enough to go around. Again, that's just the way it is in 44. And if I don't guess the exact invasion date he's in and out within one turn.

Jocke's push to Sarmi was a bigger surprise, as my defenses were in place and in fact I was countering with the KB. I guessed correctly. My forces met VERY strong surface groups 2 hexes from their position. I badly damaged or sank the New Jersey and damaged the Iowa, but because of the presence of all of the other ships there I couldn't stay around. The next day he landed at Sarmi with some opposition, but the KB was back to safety. That base had a garrison, but not good enough against the two divisions landed.

So I've learned some things, of course, but the same tactics Greyjoy is using are the ones I've employed throughout. He's extremely good at getting the right timing, force allocation and making it work. GJ is a great player. In this game Jocke has until lately been more careful than Q-Ball, moving under massive LBA and concentrating 4Es to blast bases ahead of the advance. Successful but slow. Now he's shifted gears, and now I am able to inflict more wounds as he moves, as has been shown recently. Once I get to current you may be interested to find that the current pace may indeed slow a bit as Jocke might have reached one step too far to get easy victories. Now I can get behind him to bases left there unmolested. i can isolate forward troops and pile more on to stall an invasion. I can bring the KB to bear, at least until he begins using the US CVs.

This is the time of Allied advance. Period. Any game will show this. It's really about how much pain the Japanese player can inflict for those advances. If you'd like to see any evidence of that check out the lists of ship losses posted after the turn of Jan 1 44. Nearly every advance has cost him something, and I hope to keep it that way.

PS - Anti-tank units are mostly in Burma and on a few bigger islands. If I had hundreds I'd love to put them on islands, but I don't. Always choices.

Ops I was editing my last post when you posted your answer....read above the Edit. I agree completely with you you're doing well, maybe he'll get too confident and make a wrong move that you can exploit.
Edit have you bought all the AT units in Manchukuo? They are cheap and very valuable and you can always move back to manchuria before Russia offenive in august '45
They are also air liftable to and from front bases.

All anti-tank units are bought out and deployed to forward positions. There were a few in OZ and when I pulled back from there they went to the DEI. Most are in Burma. Some are getting ready in places like the Marianas that are more important to defense of the HI. But there are not very many still, and that is not the only way to thwart tanks. Some units have some anti-tank guns built in, and engineer units have good anti-armor ratings as well.

The tanks are not the main problem. The Allied fleet and air forces are the issue, keeping me from getting to troops (and tanks) while on their way to the invasions. He could easily land a few Marine divisions and take virtually any base with or without tanks as long as there is support from the air and sea.

I saw your edit above. Yes, that is how it's done for the Allies, and is consistent with actual practice in the war. I think the important thing to remember here is that Japan will not win the war through tactical means, and will most likely only win within the VP system in place in game. Occasionally a game happens where the Japanese player does well and wins a few decisive CV battles, and the game stops. Anything going the existence though will eventually result in a lot of Allied invasions and increasing proximity to both the oil in the DEI and the industry in Japan. The goal is to take enough time and enough material with each step that as it gets later it gets harder to advance, possibly resulting in not enough time to fully grind down japanese production before 46.

My major mistake in this game was not removing troops from the Solomons earlier and bringing them right away to the Northern area of New Guinea. While he was stuck for four months trying to take Port Moresby in late 43 I should have been moving those back much more quickly.

Yes Erik, but it's always hard to decide when to abbandon a theatre. Timing is decisive, but we're not future tellers.
I had the very same problem with QBall... i didn't see the threat coming and i got steamrolled in the Solomons. He got ashore clean in a couple of places and that was enough...i triedto fight, but the fights costed me so much in terms of men and material that i eventually decided to stop and to fall back.
But was it wise? Now Brad is moving even faster...surely faster than me...and i had to left behind nearly 300k men.
Maybe if i stayed longer and reinforced instead of falling back i may have stopped him cold for few more months...who knows?!

Rader, against me, sent the kicthen sink to the Solomons when i started to advance there and in few months he managed to halt my advance, forcing me to chose another theatre.

One thing for sure i'll do in my next game is to start prepping my inner perimeter way sooner.
You just need a couple of construction BNs to build up a base if you have many months of peace ahead... A wise jap player should start building his inner bases as soon as he conquers them in early 1942. And NG bases are among those bases that need to be ready when the americans force you to fall back

Exactly. I've learned that lesson well. Many construction units in rear positions now, and I'm building not only second but third level defenses in many spots.

Right now in your game he's filling in gaps. Both history and most games though support the idea that if you bring the kitchen sink as rader did it will eventually cause you more pain than a slow but grinding retreat. It leaves other areas open, as you found out, but also japan does not have infinite resources as do the Allies. Each draw benefits the Allies and weakens Japan, and if you pile it all to the front, eventually the breakthrough will come and nothing will be left behind to stop it.

Q-Ball will have to slow once he fills in vacated space and will need to establish those bases, during which time you can then fill in the North New Guinea positions further. It's always a guessing game and a kind of dance with your opponent. As you surprise them, they work to surprise you, and you each learn as you go.

That's a great advice that I translared this way: I just bought 10 construction engineers in manchuria, china, HI for only 200 PP.
I'm in september '42 in my Pbem, I'll send them all around to build the second line of defence!
THANKS

yes dropping on his backdoor with the Hokkaido Hurricane! Which totally supports Obverts contention that the IJ have to build multiple layers of resistance or the front line not only can be bypassed .. but it is quite possible to end the war in one dramatic bypass straight for the heart of the empire ....

1 - 2 May 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Amazing. May 44. The monsoon on it's way in Burma in only two weeks, the Grace and final Judy version nearing production. The Sam and Ki-83 now being researched. The economy still chugging along okay, but some warning signs on the horizon. The first strat bombings bombings have begun, with some success, and show what to look forward to during the remainder of the campaign. A night raid shatters defenses at Rangoon, and Allied strength in the Pacific grows.

SUBS: Jocke's subs finally got a hit as Haddo nailed an xAK with one TT. It might make it to port though and live for another day.

S/SW PAC: Today our SAG got the best of a few DD TFs to then move in and hit Biak with a bombardment. Two Fletchers are sunk and our Michishio is wounded but should make port. The bombardment was ineffectual but at least there were no catastrophes here.

S DEI: Kates hit two more AK on their way to Darwin.

BURMA: Lots of action in the skies over Burma. A big night strike hits Rangoon, putting about 50 damage on the fields and destroying nearly 100 planes. Our night fighter Irvings damage and disturb the first wave a bit but can't keep up with the many small fragments in the attacks following. I'll move the most affected groups out and see what happens next. This could render Rangoon (and all other large bases) obsolete. I may have to go to many bases spread over a larger area to avoid the effects of this kind of concentration since I can't defend against it at night. (Note the reports below show only about half the total planes involved, with many more fragments coming in to do significant damage).

Helens strike Akyab and get an equal number of 2E bombers and fighters to those lost getting through CAP to the fields. Then Franks come in and do well against the mix of Allied planes on CAP. Over these two days both Jills and Frances strike near Akyab, but neither can get a hit on British cruisers or transports unloading here, losing a good number of planes in the process. Akyab didn't have CAP before today.

Numerous Helens and Frances are lost to flak attacking the Allied stack between Prome and Bassein. They do some minor damage but mainly are striking to slow progress and inflict fatigue on the units.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Wake falls. This was expected, and it took a while. I didn't offer naval challenges here. Marcus could be next, and that will likely be both a tougher defense and I might want to fight for it more thoroughly from a naval position.

3 - 4 May 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

S/SW PAC: Several air groups snuck behind the lines striking in New Guinea and the Solomons at Allied naval forces. On the 3rd Judys from Hollandia hit 3 AKs loaded with troops this time, likely sinking them, and the Jills did even better putting two TT in the BB Alabama! No extra damage reports were event, but again, this means a fast BB out for a few months most likely.

The next day I popped them over to the Solomons. I can do this from at least 6-7 bases that are in range of the Bismark and Solomon Seas transport routes. I was hoping for something juicy, but both the Jills and the Judys hit empty transports, sinking a total of two LSTs for about 15 planes lost. I flew in a small amount of AV to help get a few damaged planes back in the air, and sent the 4 groups' flyable planes back to safety after these strikes.

Decent results, but this is more of a strategic and psychological rather than a tactical move, hopefully making him have to defend this area and work to close and keep closed ALL of the bases. There is still a bunch of supply in the area, and one torp enabled HQ in the Solomons, which is great. Also, as my withdrawn fighters have now returned, Rabaul will be a tough place to suppress if he concentrates on other bases as well. Moving forward quickly has been great for him in some ways, but now I can work on his underbelly as his defenses are stretched out and there are so many untaken bases to use.

At Biak the Allies tried a DA and got a 1:2. Allied troops took twice as much damage and will not be attacking again for a while. This is fantastic, and gives me the chance to add more troops, plus pull the air HQ out (to Sorong). I have a garrison unit ready to fill in here and add to the problem. Supply is still decent at about 12k.

My CLs also met up with a massive fast BB SAG near Biak and survived! Quite a feat. I still have no idea why these ships did not get creamed here. Maybe this TF was set to bombard, and so didn't fight as well or as long? The battle went down to 4k, and maybe the US was so busy dodging long lances that we managed to sneak away. Not sure. On the way back the Kinu was hit by one TT from the Lapon and will try to make Ambon with 45 float damage. No bombardment took place at Biak, likely helping achieve the results we got there.

S DEI: The continued build-up of Darwin shows about 15 PT boats now there, plus some DDs, all protecting transports and tankers, with 200+ fighters now supporting. I'll keep looking for opportunities. I have a two CA, one CL 4 DD SAG hovering near Lautern.

BURMA: Another big strike at Rangoon meets around 50 fighters in the air, only the Irvings dedicated night fighters, and still manages to inflict major damage to the fields and the airframes on the ground. The bombers also shoot down about 20 fighters in the air. At night.

Today the fields were not overstacked at all, being at around 420 planes on a level 9 base. This pretty much confirms that the kinds of night attacks allowed in game can shut a massive field complex in two days, and here destroy over 200 fighters in the process. This doesn't seem quite right to me, but I also feel weird asking Jocke for a stop to this, as it's a valid Allied tactic.

I have to figure out some way to adjust and combat the use of night bombing missions now. Improved night fighters are a long way off, so this will rob ably mean Ill have to keep most planes far back from the front and use surprise tactics in moving them forward.

In other distressing news a pile of Allied troops has moved from Mandalay toward Lashio, or most likely to combat the troops dug in on the yellow road from Taung Gyi to Lashio. Looks like about 60k, likely meaning about 2-3k AV, which if ti moves toward my position will most likely push us back with high losses. The troops on the road one hex from Lashio will attempt a move toward Taung Gyi to add to that position. More will file down from Lashio on the other yellow road to also join in. I'll abandon Lashio if he moves that way. The line in the sand is in front of Paoshan, and there is little hope of him moving through the mountains into China. I can put 3k AV there with 6 forts in mountain territory and hold forever, most likely.

Some Peggys bombed his stack to try to slow them, but not sure if only 8 planes will do enough there.

Also, I moved one tank regiment into the supply line from Ramree, which Jocke had for the second time left unoccupied. By the time they arrived he also had another unit in the hex. I'm not sure if this will inhibit supply flow or not, but it was worth a shot.

Burma
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here is the current Burma situation. The medium sized force coming up the Lashio road will likely catch my road blocking force and easily overwhelm it. I don't have much hope that they'll retreat the direction I'd want them to based on the proximity of Lashio and it's supply path down the gray road. The embattled force on the yellow road to Taung Gyi will then be in peril. i will try to rush around a few more units from Lashio, effectively abandoning that base.

In the South my retreat is nearly complete from Prome and Bassein. The tank regiment on the road between Ramree and Allied troops will likely be threatened within days, as Allied troops are moving in. Will the supply line be disrupted? We'll see.

I'm also shifting a division, brigade and more arty from the Kunming area toward Paoshan where they will solidify that road with the other strong units already in place, just in case he has any ideas of opening the Burma road. That is really not possible unless somehow he has flown in enough to get the millions of Chinese moving, and even then I have good forces still in China for a strong defense.

Rangoon air fields are virtually abandoned now. I'll be moving the support units back soon, but might launch a few more surprise strikes there if he isn't vigilant about keeping the fields closed. Right now he's much more concerned with flattening jungles where my troops are dug-in.

New Guinea
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here is New Guinea showing the areas being contested now. Biak is under siege, and Sarmi is the major airbase and support bastion closest to the area. Dagua has been built up, but the Allies have left significant bases in the rear, including Hollandia with it's 40k supplies and air HQ, Vanaimo, Aitape and Wewak. The later has almost no supply now though, and will be an easy take once the Allies decide to try for it. Hollandia and Vanaimo should be tough, and Aitape is fighting off 490AV of Allied troops easily so far. It seems to be supplied from the Hollandia area.

I will be busy trying to reinforce Biak and all of the bases in that area as the Allies continue to try to push forward. I'll keep looking for spots, as during the past two turns, to hit Allied forces moving past the cut-off bases. My Jake units suffer, but they provide a lot of good info still, as seen here in the BB TF that was hit by Jills from Hollandia.

Here the Allies are slowly building momentum. I expect an incursion soon via PT, LST and DD. Lots of cheap assets massed for quick strikes. The 4Es haven't been seen here yet but recon is hitting our deepest bases, and I expect some boming of Ambon, Koepang and Kendari soon.

A lot of critical battles during these turns. One big mistake on my part. This will set the stage for the coming weeks.

STRAT BOMBING: The first big long distance strat bombing with B-29s happened on the 5th at Medan. Jocke started a thread about this one in the war room. Interstingly, the fighter group defending the base had 'upgraded' to the A6M5c without me doing it intentionally. I had thought they were Jacks here, and hadn't checked in a few days. I was surprised to see them actually battling it out with the new behemoths, and doing well. I guess the armor helped. I lost NO fighters though, which is VERY odd. The other strange thing about this attack was that he got 139 oil hits, taking a huge chunk off of the production here. It's now at 60 but still going at least.

Anyway. An interesting start. The strike did what it was supposed to do, but at some cost.

SUBS: E no. 5 takes out the Barbero after it hits PB Kongo Maru#2. I can see the frustration Allied players have with these ships. They really are a step up, and I can't figure out why they perform so well compared to the earlier E with nearly identical stats and even better than most Allied ASW ships. Or maybe it's just that the DL on Allied subs is always up due to all of the search planes I have flying, day and night.

S/SW PAC: The Allies hit Noemafor, the base next to Biak, with a strong invasion. It looks like they didn't have full prep judging by the disablements during landing. A good fifth of the force looks to have been knocked out for a while. We also get to the landings this time. a lot of planes are lost, but quite a few transports are hit. It could have been more, but many Jills and Judys go for the combat ships instead of the transports, again.

From Holandia also though I get some troops on ships when my remaining Jills there hit a convoy of LST, likely getting some of a support unit of some kind. Also at Hollandia I brought in Jacks which did well hitting the inevitable 4E strike, preserving the flying ability of the groups here and making sure we didn't have to withdraw those groups. About 15 4E destroyed on the day here.

Almost 400 AV of Allied troops pare on Noemafor, and against only 170 AV of Japanese troops. There are level 4 forts. If I can hold the first attack it will be possible to send more in. Some will be airlifted immediately, and two garrison units are nearly to Babeldaob rescued from Salamua.

S DEI: After seeing no bombers at Darwin in my recon flights, I sent in a TF with 3 CA, one CL and 4 DD to hit the base there. I knew they'd have to make it through a few PTs and DDs, but I've had good luck with those throughout the game on bright nights. This was 100% moonlight, but the luck didn't hold. In the second engagement the Furataka was sunk by three TT from the PTs, and the multiple battles slowed the TF so that although it had good LR CAP, it was in range of Darwin at light.

Jocke had moved in bombers that turn, unfortunately, or we hadn't seen them before. Dauntlesses put three hits on Chikuma and one on Nishiro even though we decimated the strike, and skip-bombers added one more against Maya. The Chikuma was severely slowed and is only four hexes from Darwin. It will likely be caught by DDs or sunk by tomorrows air strikes. That sucks. My bad.

The Noshiro is in another TF and should be able to get back if not caught by surface groups, but that is a big if. Altogether a fiasco much like those faced by real-life Japanese commanders. Taking note of this makes me consider that I need to use different tactics in defense. I have to get him inside my LBA and then, only then, use the navy to create damage and get ships vulnerable. An expensive lesson, but good to understand now anyway.

BURMA: The Allied troops wipe our small blocking force off the trail next to Lashio, and of course they retreat to that base. I'll send them around to the blocking army on the road to Taung Gyi, but they will not likely make it before the Allies. Tense moments. This could break open the entire Northern part of Burma and force a further retreat to Taugn Gyi and a scramble to protect the long road to Chang Mai.

Unfortunately for the IJN, from a certain point on the IJ ships are no longer a real threat even for the small boats the allied have. DDs and PTs become deadly late in the game and you're well into 1944 so i think you should play a little more conservative from now on and use the IJN only in absolutely necessary engagements.

I remember my Pts sinking Yamato with only two torps... as soon as they get the Radar, PTs are really overpowered.

Yep. It looked like the last opportunity I'd have to bombard here and arrest the development of the base. It was a day too late, and I paid the price.

This is the first time PTs have really hit anything significant since the early days in the DEI in this game.

STRATEGIC BOMBING
Hi Obvert, do you know which base those B-29 are coming from? they made a loooong way to Medan 'cause their load was "only" ten bombs each; so they were in estended radius (from 29 to 35 hexes from the AF). I suppose that such a long journey back to AF could have downed some more of those 30 damaged, a good result for yours A6M5c!!
The complet load of B-29 is 20 bombs each, so when they're in range you could expect to double the damage received .
101 B-29 means more or less 1000 bombs!!! so 139 hits isn't so much in statistical terms, but I know that it sucks the same...
Another good info is that his primary target is oil, not a big discover indeed , now that he's licking his wounds you can dislocate your fighters and AA accordingly; I'd expect next strikes from Australia once is secured ; main targets could be your Oilfields in Soerabaja, Balikpapan and Tarakan. Make him pay any attempt!!!
