Above in the section on S/SW PAC I detailed a bit of what happened to CAP at Sorong. No planes up during any of the attacks until after the sweeps were already overhead. I assume this is the reason for my high losses both this day and the last.

So I asked about why this might have happened? I need some help!

First.
High 80% CAP mean that You theoretically can have more planes in air but not always. With bad luck most of them can be currently on ground refueling. So numbers of planes in air in reality can be lower that when you use 40 or 50% CAP.
I think it can by impacted by plane numbers on AF, numbers of AV support, AF size or damage to AF infrastructure etc.
Higher CAP % mean more planes refueling at once so less planes in air and on standby

Second.
Do You have radar in base. Look at detection times. 11, 11 and 5 minutes and most of planes need between 20-40 minutes to get in position

First.

Thanks koniu. I'm aware of the lack of radar. The airbase was included as a big fragment with the radar left in the Solomons, and it regrettably has not yet been destroyed to be rebuilt here. Still, in the early going without radar I would get much better CAP numbers up than this. NONE in the air out of 140 planes is pretty odd. The point as I saw it was to get a larger percentage of CAP in the air so the radar detection times wouldn't matter so much at the expense of pilot fatigue since I assume this will be a short stand before the eventual abandonment of the base.

It's a level 5 base with 170 AS, an HQa and a base force. It has no damage.

Just still curious how over three consecutive sweeps NO planes were in the air. I'll lower the CAP numbers again to 50%, but if this is just a radar thing it's really strange that it didn't function in this way pre-radar in 42. If CAP is set I've always seen CAP in the air with a percentage scrambling and getting into position. They are on 0 hex range also.

I have to say congrats to you. Here you are mid44 and you are in pretty good shape. The allies still have no access in the DEI, and only a toe hold in the Marshalls. Hopefully you are scavenging every ton of oil/fuel there is and getting it back to the HI. If so, you should be ok through war's end here.

Suggestions:
Start prepping your defenses for the SOV activation now. Get your MLR, 2nd, and 3rd lines established. Sure, SOV activation is sitll a year away, but it is only a year away. You want your units prepped and dug in well in advance. Your air units will be key here as they are the only thing you have that will stop the SOV armored units. Be sure that you have enough air units ear marked for this defense.

I think most IJ players attempt to defend Burma/Thai/Malay too long into the game. This stretches their perimeter and creates the potential for a lot of units being isolated in SE Asia when the allies take the PI. Consider that any unit west of HK when the allies are in Manila are probably not in a position for your advantage. If so, then be sure that you are planning for the retreat of all of these units. This is a lot of AV for your overall defense, and you want to be sure you have a plan to integrate them into it.

Just a few random thoughts. Great game. Gonna enjoy reading the next 2 years of it!

Thanks Pax. It feels less and less like I'm doing well as the Allies push forward, but as you say the going has been somewhat slower of late for them. The latest push which I'll write up today is scary, but at least not as comprehensive around the map as I initially feared. I'm still very worried about oil/fuel reserves, btu the fact he hasn't bombed much of it out yet is a plus and I should be able to keep drawing from Palembang/Miri for a good amount of time still based on the vectors it appears he is taking. With coastal routing, even getting to the PI doesn't necessarily mean he can cut everything off right away.

About the SOV date, I've chosen to defend only a portion of Manchuria in good terrain, from Yingkow to Changchun to Yenki to Rashin. That'll be my first MLR. Then from Antung along the river and mountains to Seishin.

In China I'll likely not defend much before the Nanking-Shanghai area and up to Hangkow-Wuchang other than garrisons in place. He'll chose which way he wants to go and if he wants to free the Chinese finally that'll be an option for him.

The sole reason I'm still in Burma is that he can bomb Palembang/Miri if I let him get closer, btu can only reach Medan now. I'd like to keep a good force there and only slowly pull that back. Currently a division, about 2-3 brigades, a regiment, 5-6 base forces, several engineer units and 2 HQa are pulling back. They'll go to Malaya and to the PI.

This does mean there is a lot of scrambling going on trying to get other troops into the PI. About 800 AV just arrived on Mindanao and another 400 AV is on the way. About 400 AV is on Luzon now, and I'm rushing more in the next month as well as arty, a tank division and lots of engineers. The KB will likely swing from it's current position North of the Marianas to get in position to defend the PI within 2-3 weeks. I'll keep surface forces in the Bonins moving down to continue bombarding Tinian and hopefully keep the field closed. All big Marianas bases are now reaching close to 700-800 AV and near level 6 forts. Although Tinian was not much lower in AV it's forts were only level 3.9 when invaded and it's fairly new units hadn't filled out or fully prepped. I also didn't have CD guns or arty there. All other bases now have those extras. I'd really like to stall anything in this area for as long as possible.

An ID is worth +100,000 HI ... that is a lot of oil. Takes a many days worth of production even at Palembang/Miri to come up with that. Make sure that you are not throwing away more than you are taking is all I am suggesting here. I can tell you historically the IJ did not retreat fast enough, and most IJ players fall into the same traps. Once the allies get going, everything up to Formosa can fall FAST. DEI/PI is no more defensible in '44 than it was in '42.

It's funny, as just from thinking about it as I worked on the turn, based on your note, I already earmarked another 5-6 engineer and another 4 base forces to head back and started to think about what to do at the MLR to ease some units to the rear. It'll take some finessing.

The other thing though is that I'm still occupying a very large number of Allied troops in Burma that could be used elsewhere. I'd much rather have them there than in Sumatra, Java or Indochina. At 55, 51 now, after a withdrawal of some, he still has 7500 AV to my 4200 AV! Once I see his reserves moving out of Prome and somewhere else I can likely start removing some divisions and big gun units from the front.

The Thais are about to withdraw. I thought of using them on one chance river crossing to Bassein. I've got all still in Burma heading to Rangoon, and two IJA divisions sitting there prepping for Bassein as well. He has 12 units but only 21k troops, 85 guns and 112 AFVs there. I'm thinking a lot of base forces and engineers, not many troops. It should have level 6 forts, but I could get 1500-1800 AV of IJA/Thai troops (and it's a clear hex) to see if they could smack it. Might be a fun way for them to go out.

Using Thai's however you want = fun

You precisely articulate every IJ players conundrum: "I'm still occupying a very large number of Allied troops in Burma that could be used elsewhere..."

Just remember that when the PI is occupied those troops of yours are now effectively out of the war, if not actually lost. The allies can pick theirs up much easier. I have always felt that '44 is the most diifficult time of the war for the IJ. It isn't the losses (yet), but rather the choices that are so hard. When to give up good positions?

SUBS: Lots of subs making contact with Allied ships, a few being sunk. No hits. Got another Allied sub in the Sulu Sea though.

S/SW PAC: The big fleet is now two hexes off Sorong and several DD groups hit the base to clear subs and MTBs. Those didn't go down easily and two MTBs are left wandering the area, hopefully ready to slow things during the night, but all it will cause is a potential ship collision as no air strikes or naval interdictions are planned. This is up to the ground troops now.

Aitape falls and a bunch of refugee units are struggling through jungle to Vanaimo. Wewak will go soon. I'm hoping Nabire will hold out for a while.

S DEI: Still in the building phase here. Ships have moved out from Darwin, looking like three SAGs, but not in our air strike range and probably preparing to charge in and try to remove our naval assets in the area. I'll send the BBs in closer to around Dili.

BURMA: Still no sweeps at Rangoon. The previous threat posed by ships in the IO has evaporated and now it's back to a locked MLR and sporadic air battles. I probably should pull my fighters out of Rangoon as the DL went up again today, so he knows they are there. I'm just curious how they will do if sweeps come in, and I'd like to keep wearing down the pools of P-47s, even at a loss of 2-3:1.

CENTRAL PACFIC: No major combat ships or CVs located in the Central Pacific, but something is happening as there are a few TFs out in the middle of nowhere below Marcus, including one with 10 ships listed as AK. I'll pursue at mission speed with the KB to see what happens there, and then pull back to refuel and if nothing else of note occurs, head around to the PI area.

Just remember that when the PI is occupied those troops of yours are now effectively out of the war, if not actually lost. The allies can pick theirs up much easier. I have always felt that '44 is the most diifficult time of the war for the IJ. It isn't the losses (yet), but rather the choices that are so hard. When to give up good positions?

I guess I would have an easier time with the PI being occupied in terms of getting troops back as China is still completely securely in IJA hands. So the rail to Phnom Pen and to Saigon and on would still likely be an option for a while.

It's 2 weeks to Pisanoluke, another 2 weeks into strat mode and railing to Phnom Pen and getting out of strat mode. A week to Saigon, then back to strat and moving to Hanoi/Haiphong/Lang Son in about another week. So like a month and a half to get around to China. Or only 3 weeks to Singers and a boat to China or Formosa.

If I run, he just fills in and it seems I accomplish in effect what he is trying to get to by invading the PI, plus giving up the DEI. But, of course this is my first time through it all, so I don't really know if what will/can happen here. If I don't run though there is always the chance the PI invasion bogs down or something else semi-positive happens. If I do I might secure the PI and lose the rest of the oil almost immediately, negating the main benefit of having the PI secured.

Yep, choices. Nasty ones. Timing is crucial. My technique: I draw lines "in the sand". He crosses this line, these troops move. Where they move has already been planned out. Some units are sacrificial. Those are generally ones that I can pickup remnants via air transport, ie not a lot of heavy equipment. Its tough. The choices are really tough, the execution relatively easy.

SUBS: The I-38 goes for broke and comes up twice to hit ASW ships near Biak, taking out a US DE and the Brit DD Quality before being crushed by DCs.

S/SW PAC: Massive invasions hit the beach and Sorong, and two smaller ones came in to Waigeo and Sansapor. Waigeo will fall very quickly. Sansapor is fine for now with only a tank unit landing there, but I'm sure more is on the way. Sorong will be interesting. Only 2 supported divisions but with a lot of tanks. Still, this is good defensive territory, and there are 4 forts. If he doesn't get an even attack or better at first, this could last a while.

Jocke used ONE large task force of 50+ ships to land at Sorong. This will be interesting when I finally get a chance at one of those. That's very unwieldy and vulnerable I think. Hope he keeps it up!

S DEI: A big DD TF shoots into the Lautem area and is met by two strong IJN SAGs. The first breaks up the group, sinking two DDs for the loss of three, then the Tanaka led fast BBs run down the remainder and sink a few more, but also damage enough that air strikes during the day crush the remnants. At least 10 Fletchers down!! Yes!

Some Helldivers scratched the paint on the BBs with some 500 lb bombs, and later a few SBDs dented the Kirishima with a few 1000s, but all BBs are fully operational. Heading to Koepang to re-arm.

That should at least momentarily make him think twice about coming so far without any sea-based CAP. Two more SAGs didn't get involved and I moved them one hex closer for tomorrow. Tanaka is still in charge of the big combined SAG now. Two DDs are off to Soerabaja to patch up. I'll likely split the big TF and make one medium and one small one of two CA and three DD.

BURMA: A massacre of some very good fighter planes over Rangoon results from quite a few apparently failed radar checks at the base. There are two radars present, and the arrival times were between 11 and 5 minutes, so my CAP of 180+ good planes are crushed. Too bad.

Moving a bunch of stuff back. Now that I understand this better I'll have to make certain areas with more radars than necessary just to be competitive. Sucks but at least I know what's going on now. Radar units will have the best commanders available from now on as well.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Several bombardments hit Tinian, and the daytime strike finally does some real damage. The night strike suffers though, as Hyuga takes two fish from SS Jack. It has 59 (52) float, but not much other damage. I'll surround her with escorts and send her back for (another) repair. Should be out for 4-5 months. Crap.

The KB finds nothing on it's search in Cent Pac. I'll begin to shift them back NW now at cruise and around known sub locations.

You can check the specs, but most of the IJ radar is between 20 - 45% detection. Depending upon the model, you can see that you need 3 (or more) to have a good overall chance of detection. I'm fairly certain weather is involved as well ... bad weather means lower chance. I've no idea what leader properties, if any, have any impact upon radar effectiveness.

SUBS: Most subs near the Biak-Sorong route have now been sunk. RO-117 goes down today. A few E finally took out the Cisco which had been hanging in a two hex patrol near Dili for a while.

S/SW PAC: Waigeo goes down easy. No attacks at Sorong or Sansapor. It'll take a little while to build this up, but as I know from experience, not too long for the Allied engineers. I'l keep about 75 Helens nearby so that when it hits level 1 I might be able to delay a bit more with some air strikes and force him to LR CAP at quite a distance from Biak.

S DEI: No movements here. All quiet again.

BURMA: The Allies try another bombardment at 55, 51 and it looks like his arty has now dug in well. Not as many hits on the guns, but his infantry take a beating from the heavy guns we have in the hex, and we lose some small tanks and a few tractors. many troops are leaving the area now and he must be noticing this. I'm curious to see his reaction.

CENTRAL PACFIC: A bunch of Jakes went after some ships at Eneweitok but he's built the airfield to a level 1, and Hellcats shut that down quickly. Bombing continues at Tinian with mixed results, and the KB moves hopefully getting out of sight.

Reinforcements: A bunch more nice brigades arrive in China. The interesting thing about some of these is that they can be combined into divisions. After getting the next tow months worth of buyouts complete I'll start looking for the components to match and get some units bolstered into much tougher large units during the later part of 44.

A bunch of LARGE base forces arrive, many in location already, including Clark Field and Manado, which is fantastic. Others will head to the Bonins and Marianas. I'd like Pagan to be the strike area for naval attack planes, so I'll beef that base up further.

Still not sure what is going on in Burma. A lot of shipping is happening at Ramree. It could be anything from resupply to the threat of invasion, but combat ships are definitely there. Still on alert.

I have to say I'm pretty happy to be in this position so late though. I realize it can be a double-sided position, but I'm beginning to think of how to move back gracefully and without too many devastating losses. The positions are fairly static right now, so I feel free to move some units out and readjust allocations. Some HQ will be moving out to rear areas, and some units still nee infantry 43 troops, so I'll try to get those to Rangoon for upgrades. Lots of supply just now here.

The white line is the current MLR. I'll see what's coming if he ever goes for Toungoo before I decide whether that is worth a fight. He' likely have at least one poor attack there though with level 6 forts in +2 terrain, and that could be great, but he can take forts down quickly as well.

The gray line is the anticipated fallback MLR, and I'm sending some brigades there to start digging in now, as well as some to take the garrison duties from the Thais. They leave in about two weeks. Still considering a last charge cross the river to Bassein (21k troops, 110 guns, 120 AFVs as recon shows).

Any thoughts?

Here is a lok at the Marianas. I really don't want Tinian to become an active Allied base and I'm doing all I can to keep it suppressed. I'll keep the bombing up, and send in the BBs occasionally. Just having them near though he must know that if he brings planes in they are at risk.

I still don't know if the ships seen in the area South of Marcus were headed here or were just a lazily plotted convoy to So Pac. It looked like AKs only. I'll keep Emilys out there for now. I'm trying to have the KB move noisily to the Bonins and then quiet things down before gradually shifted it all to the PI. First a refuel, some new planes (the first units upgrading to the Judy D4Y4 and the Grace!!!) and standing down groups to rest and lower the sigint noise.

It will be when I get kamis, but that may be a while, hopefully. I intend to use it any way I can!

If 400-500 4Es bomb every day for 2+ years and every sweep comes at 42k I'm thinking a few 800kg bombs aren't pushing it too much. We've only tried to limit things to historical plausibility, and I'm sure we both get that wrong quite often. This whole game is a fantasy, really. I know Japanese planes could carry an 800kg bomb, and the concession in this case would be the shortened range for that weapon, to 6 hexes, and 8 with the 500kg.

In this kind of a situation where the Japanese have been in a much better position economically and strategically than in the war it seems plausible to me they could have built more of these weapons. It's not like a lot are going to make it through a 1,000 plane Corsair CAP, so better make them hurt.

SUBS: A rare hit and sinking of a TK by the Tang near Boela. The E no. 3 sinks the Sturgeon near Talaud-eilanden but then is sunk itself by the Barbel.

S/SW PAC: Lots of bombing at Nabire, and the base falls earlier than I would like. Wewak is bombarded and should go down next. My little xAKL TF is steaming unnoticed East of the Solomons on it's way to Truk with a tank regiment on board.

S DEI: No movements.

BURMA: Some LI is crushed by a big strike of 4E at Kunming. A few downed by the flak, which is nice. No other news. Retirements progressing well. He has brought new troops to 55, 51, which now has about 400k in the hex, but some are moving to Prome as well. Refreshment of forces? We'll see.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Better hits on the fields with almost 100 between the two days. Maybe I will be able to keep this place closed. When more base forces arrive more Helens will move in.

S/SW PAC: A quiet few turns as Jocke brings in reinforcements to the Sorong area, most likely to Waigeo, which unfortunately already constructed a level 1 field. I can't bomb now until the US CVs leave. Too bad. That'll be a bitch soon.

S DEI: I see ships moving but no more forays into Empire territory. I would bet some bigger and better surface forces will arrive soon, like maybe even fast BBs? He'll not want to mess around with sending weaker stuff so far into my territory and getting them picked off by air strikes during the day. As it is I'm getting some supply to Lomblen and refueling and arming to get ready for the next round.

BURMA: Now troops have moved out of the 55, 51 hex leaving about 20 units and 200k troops there. Only 1600 guns now so I'll bombard to see what is left. If he moved in new units they won't be dug in and could suffer from my heavy arty that all have between 1-2 forts. No air strikes. Very odd.

CENTRAL PACFIC: The KB upgrades a bunch of groups and takes replacements at Chichi-Jima. One section will begin the move to Manila while the rest stay and also get a few new groups resized up to 36 and 45 sized units.

Out of curiousity I took a look out to Urumchi while turning off all fort building in China to save supply as Jocke bombs HI/LI there and we move move into the endgame. It seems as if the oil might be traveling to other areas, and maybe the fuel as well. I'll have to cheek tracker to find out for sure. It would make sense though that since the need in China has increased due to strat bombing in Lanchow the oil/fuel might draw more toward that area.

SUBS: A convoy bringing troops to Manila runs over the Parche and after a failed attack on an APD the sub takes 12 hits and is listed sunk. This pretty much clears up the last remaining subs working shipping lanes. Jocke seems to have the rest running interference for the invasions in New Guinea and beyond. Good for me as nothing is aiming for those fleets and this happens to be a crucial time getting troops into place by sea.

S/SW PAC: My tank regiment from Ndeni makes it all of the way to Truk on 3 xAKL with a PB guarding!

Very good. I'm sending down some single ship Aden TFs again and a few other diversionary ones toward the Gilberts in case he gets a sniff and wants to go for something. The tanks wil now continue on to Guam. Truk just took a big supply shipment, likely the last it will see. Some of the ships used for that will haul troops back with them. I'll keep sending a few ships down at a time until he does something about it. Maybe even after as it's a long way to his LBA CAP and a few DBs there will do a lot of damage.

S DEI: Waigeo gets to level 2 fields already. Not cool. This is how it will go though. Troops from Burma will be brought to the Borneo area and Celebes as some of those need bolstering. Gotta be quick about it. Always a scramble. The PI gets priority, but I can't leave an open door to Borneo either.

BURMA: A bombardment set for tomorrow at 55, 51. Usually I just use the arty. This will include all divisions as well. They're dug in and should do well against this smaller concentration of guns he's left. I've been really surprised at how Japanese arty has performed, but I've had a lot of those 24-30cm guns in these battles, and they are tough.

CENTRAL PACFIC: The Bonins get more infantry and engineers. Should be good and ready in a month. The upper Marianas get reinforcements in terms of two large base forces with DP guns. This will be the main striking area for naval attack planes while escorts/CAP will fill out most of the bigger lower Marianas bases.

Another shot of Burma. Not much changed except now his intentions are clear regarding the MLR. He is shifting from a frontal assault to movement around the main line. Or at least to another section of it. Once I find out what is left at 55, 51 I can begin to reassess how to place infantry for this next stage. His movement is to the North, which is the best possible scenario for me as that means it takes longer and he must still look to fight in tough terrain against dug-in troops.

I'm still deciding whether I'll defend Toungoo. Once he gets out of Prome I'll have a better idea of what is coming and where it's going. He could bypass Toungoo altogether and hit the hex behind it to the South with a movement from the Prome road. I could get there well before him though with the rail line to Toungoo, then walking back, or simply by moving directly from 55, 51 if there looks to be time. I'll try at all costs to avoid moving into the clear hex North of Pegu.

If he goes for the hex where we've blocked the road from Taung Gyi I will likely have trouble getting enough there to stop him, but that will take even more time for his troops, then there would still be a difficult choice of how to proceed. Though dense jungle with no roads to Chang Mai, which I can reinforce by rail? To the Toungoo-Pegu road blocking point where I'm dug in and can reinforce?

If by a long shot he takes the tortuously extended road to the Chang Mai region through the wilds of Eastern Burma I will be ecstatic, as that will take forever and yield only a poor shot at easily reinforced territory. One can hope though!

The first times to destination below are estimates based on a normal infantry units unmolested, while the later is just a guess at how long it would take for slower troops such as arty.

The build-up continues. A BB TF hangs out at Pagan just so he has to worry about bombardments. I stupidly sent some sub-dropped mines to Tinian and now I'm afraid of hitting my own ordnance. I will go in though if he lands fighters there at some point when the base gets close to open. There are Cats now so I have to watch my Ps and Qs in the area about what I want him to see and what I don't. With all of the fighters around his ops losses will be high though, and I have the base continually LR CAPed from 1hex away. Guam is being mined and Rota just got to level 6 forts. Saipan is a few days away from level 6. I won't go any higher with them now.

I've been busy lately looking through the units sent out from China and realizing that there are quite a few small brigades that can be paired with medium ones already bought out to form divisions. Over the next few months I'll be looking to build these smaller divisions (340-400AV), which will be partially on some islands and bases already. Just needs the other half. Some partial small divisions arrived in Manchuria that are fairly cheap as well and those are the first to be bought out for the PI. Only 950 PP each! They will need time to fill out, but because his sigint is so good, I bet having a division listed in a base is half of the battle toward defending it as then he has to allocate more to an invasion, limiting his options and speed of advance. That's the thought process anyway.

Here is the information screen. i'll be doing some general reports now as it's been a while and it's good to update for the middle of 44 to see where the economy is now. While our air losses are high and both pools and pilots are low, I'm confident that things will improve actually as a few better fighters come online in the next months and as he moves into more concentrated territory where I have decent LBA. Also, the recent change to the beta so he can't see before setting orders where I've placed fighters is huge. I've not taken much advantage yet, but I have a few surprises still in store.

Well, it's not too bad yet, but things are still going down and supply has become an issue as I update engine and airframe factories on a massive scale. It's almost like 42 again!

HI is still accumulating nicely and I'll continue to turn off naval shipyards as the last units are built. All but patrol and small craft are turned off for 45.

You are doing nicely on the industry front, although I'd suggest building more armaments, you will need them. You have stacks of HI so start stockpiling engines, vehicles and armaments, no point in having a HI surplus at the end!

More details. The HI is still going up, the fuel is still slowly trickling away, and the oil is lessening just slightly due to Allied strategic bombing of Medan, Lanchow and now Sian. The continuing reason for holding in Burma is keeping him from strat bombing range of Palembang, but of course if he moved B-29s to Australia he could hit most of the oil centers in Java and Borneo already. Shhhhhhhh!!!

It's all a downward slope now. I've got to get supply sorted soon though, so many factories' repair toggles have been flipped off until this stabilizes and goes up to acceptable levels again. I've turned off extraneous supply expense in China, and that should remain largely self-sufficient even though major centers of HI/LI at Kunming, Canton and Hong Kong have been bombed out. There are still a lot of small producers and a lot of supply sitting around as well. Manchukuo is still building forts, but still producing a good bit of supply and HI, so that will help as China is wrecked further.

Ultimately the length of this conflict will depend on the ability to keep oil centers in the DEI and get at least some of it back to the HI. I've given the cushion that I could in North New Guinea and the Moluccas, and now everything must be fought for with all we have, whether that means losing the KB or not. I'll try to keep it of course, but I have to keep the Allies from good bases like Manado and Ambon and all of Mindanao.
