As far as I know, just lack of use is the problem and not any dysfunction . However, my spouse is 48 and the commonly believed myth about a woman's libido increasing in her 40's, is just that, a myth.

Or maybe she just realizes that ours has been heading downhill since we were 18 years old!

Hours hunched over a computer sweating out your defenses, drinking too much coffee and turning your hand into a claw don't get you going?

Yeah, me neither! I try to separate the two activities with a visit to the gym.

I still remember years ago when I was in my late 20's, and my so so attractive 22 year-old tall blond dancer GF called me LATE one night when we hadn't been planning to get together. I had been playing Masters of Orion for like 6 hours and it was after 2AM. She wanted me over but when I got there nothing was working! I think that night was the beginning of the end for that particular romance.

I'm going to stop thinking about that now ...

It is the other way around, actually: AE is played by old gentlemen who use it to kill the time that should be devoted to romance, if (if only!) their libido was still what it used to be/should have been/might have been...

Playing Japan can be depressing enough, let's not add fuel to the fire.

26 - 27 October, 1944

FIRST KAMI HITS!

S DEI: So the small raid I sent to Taberfane actually flew and got some results. Of the 27 plane group 18 planes flew and achieved 3 hits on the Amphib TF at Babar, sinking two APA. No troops on the ships will also tells me something interesting. I also lost 24 Tojos that were flying escort for 4 Hellcat that were on CAP. These little strikes will not amount to much most likely, but they help me to figure out how best to use these tools and serve notice that they will be used.

This will most likely work best against a CAP of 50 or fewer planes, as I don't yet know if coordination will be possible for large strikes from a land base in the beta. Even Jocke's strikes earlier that flew from a level 9 base were very fragmented, but maybe something else was happening with his settings.

I see Jocke's CVs at Morotai. I have to keep an eye on where they start moving.

SUBS: One sub sunk near Cam Ran Bay, another damaged near Samah, and one heavily damaged near Balikpapan for no losses.

AERIAL MINING: Jocke aerial mined Lomblen a while back and I didn't think to question what would happen if he went for one of my heavily night CAPed bases like Palembang. Well, he did, and of course the 48 NF can't intercept in spite of radar on the ground and in the air.

I'm not going to ask for an HR, or ask to stop the game to start a thread in the tech area. I simply asked Jocke if he considers aerial mining to be somehow different to any other night strike and therefore validly not interceptable. I'm not even sure how I feel myself. Apparently the Allies did quite a bit of it without much intervention, using smaller flights of planes and going in at night. The difference as I see it here is that this was ALL of his B-29s in one raid (spread over many packages of course) against a known night CAP and flak center.

Should this be okay? How does CAP intervene when it's a city strike but not at all if it's mining? Or do we just have to live with the abstract with no limitations in order to simulate what was possible under different conditions in the war?

NORTH PACIFIC: Bombing his troops in Umnak after getting some damage on the fields.

BURMA: Jocke definitely noticed the stack moving, and bombed it. He lost about 14 4E, which is nice!
I anticipate this will be a daily visits for as long as these troops are moving. That means 10-15 4Es a day if I can keep flak supplied. So over a week 70-100, and over a month 280-400. I think that probably exceeds replacement rates, yes? A supply TF is about a week out from Bangkok.

All movement is good to Moulmein. The troops will make it without mishap. I've also started moving two tank divisions to secure the hex two distant from Bangkok where the last woods are located. Allied troops from Tavoy are walking across country now to get here too. I have a division and a brigade in Bangkok I may move over to ensure we own the hex. He has 200k troops in Tavoy now, but can't have more than 3k AV. If I get 1.5k supported by arty and AA into that hex I can hold the road open until the big stack makes it I'm thinking, and if I own the hex he can't do anything but turn around.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Still holding against bombardments at Guam and Saipan.

Just my opinion on aerial mining, but you should be happy he's wasting B-29s on the mission. B-24s OK. B-29s are racehorses.

The way you "CAP" aerial mining is with minesweepers. He's using up his best bombers and you can counter with your cheapest ships. In the early war I have routinely seen a couple of IJN minesweepers do 35-50 mines per turn.

In this case I'm not happy but I'm not distraught either. He isn't wasting the missions at all, but in fact shutting down the most important port on the map for some days. Maybe many.

I've been converting PB to AMc like mad, but the first new ones have a few more days to go. They are cheap ships and yet I lost four clearing mines at Lomblen and they're still not all gone!

Are there any tips for clearing mines better? A larger 3-4 ship TF with a commander with high naval skills maybe?

I think I might rather try to see if multiple smaller TFs are more effective than one larger TF. I suspect they aren't, but I'd rather have multiple chances at clearing the field than just one.

I think I might rather try to see if multiple smaller TFs are more effective than one larger TF. I suspect they aren't, but I'd rather have multiple chances at clearing the field than just one.

The last three TFs I used at Lomblen for the same mission were 1 AMc, then 2 AMs (lost on the first night of their sweeping) then 1 AMc. The last managed to stay afloat for two days before getting nailed.

Maybe I should ensure they arrive in the day phase on the first day at least. I could find TF commanders with better naval than offered for PB captains in the pools, even for one ship TFs. Not like I need PPs for anything right now.

The big sweeps I've seen have been DMSes. AMc classes are tiny. PBang is a big port.

Most Japanese players probably have few of these left now and they all can upgrade to E as well, meaning they lose their specially minesweeping ability for some reason. Some actually convert BACK to DMS later, but I think I have maybe a handful of those.

So as it should be the IJN has limited capabilities for these kinds of things. I guess the Allies are better set up for sweeping with about 60 Aussie AMs, another 100+ US AMs and a zillion YMS, plus the DMS if there are some left. Maybe that's why my aerial mine drops hit only PTs.

I end up using all of the AMs as ASW escorts in 1942, or more often port ASW patrols just outside the mouth. After 1942 against the AI I've never worried about mines much. The ocean-going minesweepers do some ASW and some sweeping early. Later on, especially when the DEs arrive, they're harbor queens. In a PBEM I expect they'll be sweeping.

I don't know what a Japanese AMc looks like. If they're converted PBs they're probably bigger than the Allied AMc. It's not much more than a motor launch.

Yeah, I'm sure you felt the force move some things during that situation.

SUBS: The Allied subs disperse from the Indochinese coast after the past few days of attacks. The subs near Balikpapan move back toward the Lomblen area as well.

DEI: A big bunch of ships including two CV TFs appears near Manado listing a heading toward Borneo. I'm thinking this means Balikpapan is going to be the target. This will be interesting. Up until very recently I've had only a brigade here. After getting most troops off of New Guinea and the South DEI islands I've been moving it all back through Ambon, Kendari and Macassar to Balikpapan. It's at around 500 AV now and could go up to 600 in the next few days. The forts are level 6 and the airfield is a level 9. I just topped up the mines to just under 200. I'm adding several MTBs now and I'll swing all surface forces toward the base in anticipation of a move tomorrow.

If he hits the fields and puts those out of action there's not much hope of keeping the base. If the IJN can do some damage and thwart a bombardment or two, then the air forces might do something here. Now I'm missing the Hei that was torpedoed near Lomblen. I'l have one strong SAG with a fast BB and two CA plus 3 DD. Then two more DD SAGs and a CL with two more DDs. Because of the strong CV presence I'll try for the first time to use a range 0 setting to hit only the transports if possible. Again, if bombardments wreck the fields it won't much matter, but it's worth a shot.

S/SW PAC: I spotted CVEs in the Solomon Sea and I've got one Nell and another Peggy kami group at Rabaul with escorts. They'll fly tomorrow.

S DEI: Three is still a nava presence at Babar but he's doubled the fighters there now.

BURMA: Another good day for flak on the 28th hitting 14 more 4E near Moulmein. The stack crossed with no problems. The tanks are moving out ahead to invest the hex Allied troops are moving to from Tavoy and will meet several IJA divisions there to block the road two hexes from Bangkok. As it's a good road these will be easy to supply as well.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Saipan falls. So it took jut over three weeks to reduce this base. I guess that's not too bad as those troops will likely need rest now as well. Looks like he'll reduce the stack and we'll be buying back a lot of troops soon.

After seeing that flak makes his ground bombing attempts very costly I'm feeling better about thtis trek from Moulmein back to the Bangkok area. I'll get about 2k AV into the hex near Bangkok before the Allies can get there, plus some flak, arty and an HQ. Then some of the troops will go toward Raheng and other toward this blockade from their position in Moulmein.

TARGET BALIKPAPAN!

DEI: The Allied fleets move in closer to Borneo but Jocke plays this well and holds the invasion back. He instead sends in several SAGs and the rolling booms of naval gunfire is heard all through the oilfields and jungles of Balikpapan during the night and into the morning. In the biggest encounter a 4 CA led SAG comes in and gets some good hits on the IJN ships, putting Suzuya in sinking condition. The Hiei does amazing work though and puts big hits on both CA Sleipner (?) and CA Witchita, resulting in both being lost on the day.

After this there were many engagements with Fletchers against everything resulting in several more DDs being lost, and in the afternoon naval strikes take out two more damaged DDs. The Hiei and Mikuma escape toward Soerabaja and show no DL.

No naval bombardments hit the base but the Allied 4Es come in after some sweeps and almost our whole CAP is still up to meet them. It's a good day when 50-60 4E go down in flames!!!

Strategically though this was a good move by Jocke and it just barely looks to have closed the fields for CAP in the afternoon as only my LR CAP from Samarinda was up. If there are no further bombardments the CAP should come up tomorrow after engineers do their work, but a naval bombardment will likely mean that doesn't happen. I'll leave one sacrificial IJN SAG here with two old CL and three DDs since they still have torps.

SUBS: The Trigger came right into Balikpapan and didn't hit one of the 200 mines there apparently, but did sink an ACM.

S/SW PAC: Went for the CVE which had moved into Finchafen's CAP cover. Lost about 100 planes there. It was worth a try though as 8 Nells got kami runs in without scoring a hit. Keeps him having to CAP very rear bases as well if he wants to move things through here. If I'd been one day earlier they would've been at sea and had 30 planes up on CAP, and that might've been a blood bath the other way around. I'll keep trying.

BURMA: A few sweeps hit the extended CAP from Bangkok getting about 5:1. I don't like that but after one more day the troops will be going it alone protected by their AA and the woods, building forts in preparation. The Allied 2Es keep on at Moulmein but move up to 20k where they're not too effective. One thing I can always count on is that Jocke does not like to lose planes, and he will back off if he has a bad day in that respect. (Sending in more flak to Luzon, Okinawa, the Bonins and Formosa for just this reason. Using the flak from Yokohama and other bases that have the massive concentrations of static fort 12.7cm DP guns, where I can afford to take the smaller 75mm guns out).

The main stack is moving from Moulmein. His stack is showing movement into the forest across from Moulmein, but once we've moved out he'll change it up of course. Should I leave a river crossing guard of about 1k AV just to make him think about it?

Was it worth it? Well, at this point I'm losing a good number of airframes, some small DDs, a couple of good ones, and a CA to basically slow the advance a few days. Probably not worth it, but in exchange we down 50+ 4E and a good number of the best Allied fighters at better than usual ratios, and sink at least 2 modern CA plus possibly a DD (mine). Also during these two days I've been able to fly more troops in and possibly extend the siege here. That may be the biggest positive of the operation. Since the fields are now closed I'll try to keep sending stuff to Samarinda to then walk over. Mostly support and fragments of units already there.

VICTORY POINTS
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

For the first time since the early game the Allies have moved ahead in points. At his current pace (which will likely increase as more and more territory is taken) Jocke will likely get to a marginal victory in VPs. It's a good indication of where we are but not a complete measure of this particular game. Due to several concessions for playability and to help keep us both interested decisions were made that led to fewer points for the Japanese side in certain aspects.

The game likely would have stopped had I refused some concession on China in late 42, and had I demanded to continue the strategy I'd based all of my early decisions on; the goal to take all of China and gain it's industry and resources (plus VPs) for the remainder of the game until the Russians could take them back.

Even after the beta issue with coordination was figured out we did not upgrade which allowed the Allies to also have the 'free' pre-turn intel on aircraft placement during the first 2/3 of the game. This was inhibiting to say the least, and combined with the ultra-coordination he learned to use by massing 4E strikes after sweeps led to a one-sided air war that only recently has begun to even out.

Psychologically I felt these were necessary to keep things going. Jocke has been a great competitor and partner in this game, but has had some down-points, understandably, after losing all US CVs early and feeling he simply couldn't play another several years and not even make progress in the game. He's since then learned ways to move forward and gained perspective on those times, as have I. I'm glad we have worked through things but still there is always more to discuss in a game that gets less stable the more we get into the massive concentrations of units that occur in the late game.

In short although I play to win, I'm not concerned with 'winning.' I want to have a hard fought battle and an honorable attitude toward each other as we finish this game out. So while the VPs are something I'll celebrate (and bemoan) from time-to-time this count doesn't measure everything in this particular campaign. If we keep playing competitively and with good humour through mid-45 then to me we've both 'won.'

SUBS: The I-27 puts one fish into CV Illustrious. Can't seem to get more than one hit, but at least it's something and again will make him think about where these are right now. No extra messages on the CR for this hit so I'm sure it's not severe damage, but the ship is showing up on the sunk list. That is not probable as no Brit planes were lost these turns.

The Trigger keeps hanging around in Balikpapan avoiding mines and hits CL Kino, already wounded by air strikes, with one TT. This CL will likely be lost so I let it stop fires in port for one night and now I'll post it in the hex solo in case it actually will fire one of it's still full complement of long lances tomorrow against something. Also lost an SC to a sub near Luzon. Interesting that he continues to operate subs within air ASW range from Luzon and Formosa instead of patrolling the middle of the South China Sea where I can't reach except with Es.

DEI: Balikpapan is pounded again. At least this is postponing the landings a few days. I don't even spot amphib TFs with his CVs but they must be around.

A controversial move today as Jocke sends in night bombing B-29s to hit the airfields. More on that in the next post.

S DEI: No moves here in spite of the clear field after subs sprinted off and SAGs engaged at Balaikpapan. I'm hoping the kami strike earlier is at least making him think.

BURMA: Bombing commences against my newly installed army blocking the Tavoy units along the Moulmein-Bangkok road. After units get some forts losses will likely be lower and soon more AA will come up the road to join in. There's no hope of him weakening these enough to break through here before the big stack arrives. Feeling quite secure in the withdrawal now. It'll be interesting to see if he moves toward Raheng or down this road direct toward Bangkok with the big stack.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Guam continues to hold, but the Allies get a 1:1 for the first time, reducing Japanese troops further. The next one will likely capture the base.

The new Ki-84r Frank is here! All Frank factories upgrade immediately and that brings the total production to around 270/month. I'm frantically adding Ha-45 factories as there are not enough now, and this will require another 60 new ones. There will be some shortages soon as only 175 of those engines are left in the pools. This should mean about 9 planes a day. That'll fill out some key groups in Bangkok and Manila over the next few weeks. 36k CAP!

NIGHT BOMBING: AGAIN
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It seems it's one thing after another here. I just don't know about our understanding of each other right now.

After getting the airfield close to shut with 4E strikes the day before, Jocke sends in night strikes that just tip the balance to closing the fields for the next day when most likely they would have been open for CAP after the many engineers here had a night to work.

Jocke has said repeatedly that he thinks night bombing is overpowered and that it's not a fair tactic. He has been gracious in not using it to bomb fields or ports while I've voluntarily opened up our HRs for night bombing, at my own instigation, to include all days (not 50% moon as we started with). It is a valid tactic with B-29s against strategic targets especially, and he has bombed manpower when possible to make this as fair as it can be with the current settings. He still routinely takes out 50% of the night fighters up on Cap with each raid and I've had to increase the build on these simply to keep groups filled out.

While this raid came as a huge surprise for me it didn't change much on it's own except to keep the likely 45 plane CAP down and avoid losses to his sweeps and day strikes. It did make me immediately ask him whether his thoughts had changed about this tactic. He didn't seem to think it a problem in small numbers, but I still do. The results are below, but here is what I mentioned to Jocke.

The worrisome thing is 13/1/21 hits (35 total) and 18 planes destroyed on a level 9 base at night by 25 B-29s which in the war were proven not to be able to precision bomb at night.

On a smaller base the results would have been likely much worse and possibly closed the fields simply from these few planes on night strikes.

I absolutely hate having to bring up restrictions on play, and I don't want to steer anything toward a real or even a seeming Japanese advantage in the HRs, but night bombing is just not right against precision targets. Jocke says he meant to use these a few days ago but they didn't fly, and was trying also to use some on port strike, but they didn't fly this turn. I'm still confused as to why he suddenly thinks he needs them here when he has stated previously that he doesn't need them and doesn't believe they are fair. In the future I could see huge applications for this that would swing future battles tremendously. These strikes at 5 different fields in Luzon before big day strikes would render some bases ineffective and others less effective, and really compromise daylight defenses.

In my most recent message I proposed having no strikes on airfields or ports at night. I said if he feels he needs to have night strikes a viable option that I would think no more than 100 2E on night missions for one base would be a good compromise. This would allow both sides some use of it, but nothing too extreme.

SUICIDE RECON
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ok. Now the next issue. I haven't even mentioned this to Jocke yet and I won't if people think it's completely valid. It seems incredibly cheesy to me and smells like taking advantage of the system to gain knowledge of force disposition.

Jocke sent one small arty unit with no AV across the river into the main stack at Moulmein to obviously get compete info on my troops there. So, now he has that as you can see from the report below.

Am I wrong in thinking there is something gamey with this? It seems I've heard of other instances of players trying this and it being called out as not quite right there, but I can't remember in what games now. It certainly doesn't feel like a usual tactic that I see a lot.

So what do you all think?

It is not quite right, but it somehow makes some sense. The game lacks a probe/patrol, or some form of precise recon you get when you're in contact with the enemy, and bombardment plays this role.

Right now, if you don't bombard, you can be in the same hex as an enemy stack and not know its strength until you commit to a full fledged attack. If you are on the other side of a river, then you even need to shock attack (ie cross in strength) to get this information.

As such, I would say it is legit, even though having to use artillery units to do this seems extremely strange.

After thinking about this further it seems even worse than at first. I see what you're saying there, but from the air (recon) you already get numbers of troops, guns and vehicles. If you bomb you get individual unit names, usually most of them over the course of several mission.

This gives all of that plus actual strength and potentially more (combat factors like supply, leaders, etc). The whole point of defending a river crossing is to defend the crossing, so it's pretty unlikely a scouting party would make it through the entire Japanese army counting units and men and machines and assessing their combat strength as they got blown back to the other side.

Don't you also force the entire Japanese army to expend supplies to fight off this attack by one arty unit?
