Hans,

The point, at least for Japan, is that the list of HQ conversions you have is limited. For instance, Saipan can be 4th or Southern (both unrestricted, so, who cares). But you are not restricted when changing unit HQ, and this means you can turn Saipan into a China Exp base (in two steps)

I've always struggled with this. I've never been able to change a bases HQ to "General Defence" as it's always greyed out and not an option. Am I picking the wrong bases? I've never been able to get this to work.

IIRC, to change a base's HQ, there has to be at least one unit with that HQ at the base.

Yes. It's not intuitive or cost effective. You have to move a construction unit or some similar cheap unit to the base you want to change. Ideally do this before you build it up as later it'll be REALLY expensive.

Then change the unit at the base to the restricted HQ you want. After doing this you should find the base then has the HQ you've changed the unit to highlighted.

So. Another question.

How far is too far? I've not done this, but since China is right there, would you change the bases on Formosa to the Chinese Expeditionary Army HQ to be able to fly units from there to Formosa? Or similarly change any base near enough to the Kwangtung Army HQ and fly the available units fro there to a new location?

I've decided not to try these as I might need the troops in those locations soon anyway, but does anyone else do this?

I've tried this method in the Kuriles and no love, the General Defence option is greyed out. I may be trying on the wrong bases or had a unit that doesn't fit whatever requirements are needed. It's been so long since I tried I'm a little fuzzy, but I thought I moved an AA unit to a base and tried to change it to General Defence but couldn't, so I could never get that option to highlight for the base. I'll try again when I have a turn.

SUBS: A number of subs are appearing in the shallows of the Chinese coast for the first time in years. This is good timing as no big convoys are sailing past and several ASW TFs are there to intercept. The Kates at Hong Kong and Sallys at Canton do their job as well attacking several subs on the day. One is hit by surface ASW and another is sunk by the second TF here. No Japanese ships are hit.

DEI: Balikpapan falls to a shock attack! I'm not sure if Jocke was intending to take and use this base, but it will be a bit harder now as ALL of the oil and refineries have been wiped out in the attack!

The remnants of our forces huddle in Samarinda awaiting the next blow. Hopefully they will all just surrender.

NORTH PACIFIC: I keep up some light bombing on Allied troops at Akutan. No sign of any further moves or support arriving now that winter has come. In later months the remaining troops will shift out of the Aleutians to the Kuriles, leaving behind only a few remnants of units to force landings at certain important bases.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: I'm moving all big troops off the border with Burma. Paoshan will be held by a solo brigade from now on. A good amount will remain in the mountains at Kunming and Tuyun ready to close this door should the Allies try anything but also ready to move down to support the lowlands in China. I'm moving the China Exp. Army Command to the center and a bunch of divisions and arty down to the coast in preparation for Allied moves there. A minimal force of several divisions in each of the Western Central bastions of Kweiyang and Chikhiang will remain in case of a Chinese breakout.

S DEI: Troops have invested Dili. We'll see what the Aussies can do here.

BURMA: Allied units move into the hex I've been sitting on for a few days now near Bangkok. This was 1-2 turns before I thought they would arrive, but hopefully they are tired and supply will be a problem. Looks like 7 units and 120k troops. That could be around 5 divisions I'm thinking. So about what I thought, in the 2-2.5k AV territory. Our troops have built one fort, but the arty and AA have none so far. I have a very experienced division, a big experienced brigade, an independent regiment and a tank regiment here now with I think 4 arty units and an HQ in +2 territory. All are in good spirits but the air strikes have brought up disruption for the division and a bit for the other combat troops. The closest tank division s 2-3 days away depending on air strikes. The second no more than 4 days out. The big stacks are still a ways off but some arty and other support troops will arrive within 10 days. The Southern Army Command HQ is at Bangkok and two range 5 Army HQ are in range as well. I'm thinking we'll hold this.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Guam still holds as the last troops on Saipan fold. I guess I now need to start basing some NF in Tokyo and other big bases on the HI. I have a few new IJAAF groups that will be dedicated to this area, plus a recon Sentai can convert to the Dinah III KAI NF and is doing so in Singers right now for another unexpected 27 plane NF group. This is huge.

STRATEGIC THINKING:

My next goals are to get the big stack out of Burma and begin to choose where these highly experienced troops go next. My thinking is to simply abandon the entire DEI once Palembang becomes untenable or destroyed. I think I can still get oil and fuel to traverse the South China Sea for a while but it is going to take bringing the KB into a place where it can react to anything moving across and having a good amount of LBA strike planes and kamis along the surrounding coastlines to discourage raiders.

My goal is to keep solid amounts of oil/fuel moving up through December. It's optimistic, but if Jocke is focused on the South DEI push, solidifying his Central Pacific holdings and pushing toward Luzon then I could do it. If he goes for Indochina it will be tougher, but there are still BIG airfields here and everything is building forts and getting garrisons. All of the troops moving now will eventually be heading toward Saigon, so anything coming there after a month or so would meet a big highly experienced army.

In the previous rounds of beta the Kuriles were specifically blocked from being General Defence. I suspect that there are others that can never convert as well but don't know what. The option won't be greyed out on other bases you own.

AHA!!! That is news! I wonder why that happened? So we can change some bases, but not others, and the Allies can change all bases?

Seems worthy of a discussion.

A dev once said that the PP system is the one thing they didn't have time to get right before release, but that it's never even been looked at since. He said that changing units for lower priced HQs would in fact go more in line in many cases with intentions, as there just needs to be more fluidity to do things that were historically possible. For instance Leyte featured several infantry units from Manchuria, including if I remember correct two full divisions. no way i can buy two full divisions at a moment's notice. When necessary the political system moved what it needed to move.

PPs also don't take into account the early successes of the Empire. I wish you could gain PPs per month with early conquests, simulating less threat to the HI and more ability to move things around as needed to support distant conquests. Similarly there should be an emergency flood of PPs similarly to having kamis activated, or an invasion of the Kuriles.

That would work for the Allies as well, giving more for Japanese troops crossing the line of Death in OZ or India. Makes sense to me.

That is good to know. I don't play any of the recent beta's since the last official patch so wasn't aware of that. However, if it's a beta thing, why am I having trouble under the last official patch. I must not be doing something right. I'll get it figured out.

This triggered an old memory from the Emergency Reinforcement threads.

I don't know if it's involved with General Defense issues, but hit the '4' hotkey and look at the Kuriles. The HI is Code 100 and the Kuriles are 101. Except Para-Jima.

So far as I know these nation codes have never been altered in any patch. For Japan making the Kuriles not part of the HI administratively might be on-purpose. And the General Defense flag part of the EXE with a check on nation code.

Sorry, I confused you there. I meant the previous round of betas that resulted in the current official patch... as opposed to the current round of betas.....

From memory there was a statement that it was never intended that all the perm restricted units should be deployable to the Kuriles.

Right, and doesn't them having a 101 code instead of a 100 do that?

Not necessarily. For example, in a patch (long ago) the code for the islands in the Indian Ocean that are beyond the LOD was added. the point being that more than one code can be recognized, if that's how they did it.

Jocke is back from the sick bed and sent a turn. The game computer is at home and I'm at work. I can't run it until later.

He says this might be the most important turn in game to date!!! it's the attack against the blocking force on the road to Bangkok. He gives himself a 20% chance of breaking through. Wow. That makes me nervous.

My units will face waves of bombers, probably 4-5 divisions or the equivalent, but he hasn't yet bombarded on the ground. Should be interesting. I'm hoping they hold for this day and allow the tanks to make it there. Also his supply will be sporadic after the first big attack.

Fingers crossed and nerves aplenty!

I remember Scooooooooodra being altered.

My point, and I'm probably out to lunch here, is the nation codes are used for lots of things in the EXE. How the EXE examines them: in an index, a series of nested IF:THEN statements, etc I don't know. And for the Allies I think they're primarily used to determine which set of Leaders to present to the player. But for the Japanese side there are also multiple codes, and I think they're used in part to determine how restriction on LCUs operates.

The Kuriles have different codes than the HI. EXCEPT for Para-Jima, which is an HI code. I don't think this is an accident. I think the scenario designers wanted Para-J to be an anchor base to defend the arc, and the other islands to require hard decisions on buy-outs.

I basically agree, although the details are unknown to me. Especially the part about LCU restrictions, that one would be news to me but I haven't messed around hardly at all in that area.

DEVASTATION!!!

BURMA: Gutted. He brought more than I thought was possible. The recon I've done has been useless and gave me no real idea of the strength here, and I didn't overstuff the hex as I should have, so the Allies have broken the retreat path. They control it now.

The interesting things here is there is a lot of +3 territory that I've got these forces next to here. I may try to just pile up in it and see what happens, crawling slowly toward Bangkok. His tanks will cross the hills soon and join in but all of this is very tenuous now. He can also flank through Raheng but that might give me enough time to move across and out. I have to plan for these troops being surrounded and destroyed. Jocke has played this well and I've made at least one crucial mistake in not adding another division or two into this hex. I've stopped the tanks and will hold as more stuff catches up. They are in a +3 terrain and about 20 arty units and HQs are on the way, a few days away. The 4300 AV of the main body is about 7-9 days away. He still has no decent supply path here, but might get some through the woods.

This wil be interesting. Not as planned, and just one day or two here or there changed everything. It's a game of inches!

SUBS: Another sub likely sunk on the South China coast.

DEI: Troops are moving to Samarinda now. I've just sent all amphib TFs in the area to Batavia and Soerabaja to begin the withdrawal. I need everything in Indochina to protect now against any crossing to close of retreat paths. All planes will begin to move this way as well except for Palembang defenders.

S/SW PAC: Truk will no longer base any fighters permanently. It's supply is running low and the opportunities for interdicting supply routes have dissipated with the invasions of the Marianas and changing to a mid-Pacific LOC apparently.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Hunkering down. A brigade is walking here from Phnom Pen and that will bring Saigon to around 500 AV and Cam Ran Bay will have about 1k AV.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Just bombardments at Guam. Got a garrison unit off of Rota through air transport and it's one that will combine so that is big. I'll try for a bit more in a small slow sneaky way.

Well, I've had my fun there, and really frustrated a massive Allied army several times. If dug in and in +3 terrain maybe I can do it again? Who knows. To play Japan is to be continually optimistic when there is no realistic reason to be!

I know, its just so far out, so easy for the allies to land behind you, so easy to get caught, so many units you need to delay them .... Argh ... I really hate Burma. I think the main reason I generally try to eliminate CHI is so that I can retreat via CHI if necessary. I mean once the allies have Rangoon in mid-43 the whole west DEI is exposed and no real way to keep the oil flowing. And once they have Darwin, pretty much the same for the EAST DEI ... so I usually bail pretty early. I'm sitting all the way back at Long San in the South and Kunming in the North, the PI, Formosa ... the rest of it ... Pfft. Just too risky for me. I want shorter lines and ones that I can reinforce quickly with little chance to get cut off ... Sorry. Venting.

Did I mention I hate BURMA?

This is a redo post from the server difficulties. Not as much in it as the original, sorry to say.

SUBS: The Sunfish proves elusive after hitting the E Okinawa and puttin gher under near Luzon.

DEI: Some units are being flown out of Samarinda as the Allied engineer have apparently not been brought in to open up the airfield at Balikpapan. I could get a bunch of good stuff lifted out including the HQa that retreated here.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Units are moving to fill in all bases along the coastline. Engineers have Saigon to level 5 forts and should push to level 6 by the end of the month.

S DEI: The Aussies are taking their time on Timor, and walking some more troops over to Dili from Lautem.

BURMA: Our forces continue to push on in spite of being now cut off. The retreating units from the former blockade are crushed by airstrikes and lose well over 2k casualties. A CAP will be over them tomorrow.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Guam still hanging on. Also, I'm beginning slow movement of troops from Pagan and Agrihan back to the Bonins. I want to fill those up to the max and there is a lot here to fl back since it isn't useful up forward anymore.

I'll make an attempt to get through the blockade here in Burma, but it's not looking promising. Luckily the terrain is good, and if we have to fight it'll be in +3 hexes.

A7M2 Sam
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is the best all around airframe for the IJN units and will begin to fill out the KB as soon as possible. The first of these however go to the former Tainan Ku S-1 which is now the S-901 Hokutai. This is still an elite unit with pilots in the 70-80 exp range but only 18 planes. It is being used as a high level CAP for Bangkok, and the extra climb of the Sam could help get these guys above anything other than a P-47. (While it's filling out it'll remain at 20k).

Looking forward to seeing how they do!

11 - 12 November 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The game is moving forward at 1-2 turns a day. I haven't had as much time to update lately but will try to catch up to the game in the next few days. In a nod to Francois (fcharton) the music for today is Bon Iver - Stems Project (remixes). The beverage is a latte.

SUBS: Allied subs get a few hits on smaller transports and we get a few hits on them.

DEI: Not much seems to be happening at Balikpapan. That's fine as it is a potentially huge base to take out the rest of the oil and industry of the DEI. I'm getting as much as I can from the mid-range defenses in the South, leaving a few roadblocks up front and getting a hodgepodge to have for another small speed bump. A few air nodes will be left intact and able to contest forward movements as he is not using CVs here, only LBA.

PI: All ships moved out and the extra strike planes and kamis I had ready to go from Manila and Clark didn't get a chance to hit anyone. The kamis from Cebu flew into a full CAP without escort and were annihilated without getting near any ships.

All troops from Antimonan, which are fragments from Babeldaob being flown back, will try to move out but may not make it in time depending on bombing and the aggressiveness of the Allied progress here. The Emilys are hard at work long distance from Manila getting a few more back. No sense leaving them if I can move them out. A few more small combat units, a few big base forces and some engineers.

The Allies finally take Davao which allows many of the flown out units to begin rebuilding and filling out.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Jocke must be starting to notice that the Chinese mountain region is being vacated. Lots of troops moving down. It's a risk, but a sizable force will be left in Kweillin easily able to get to Tuyun before any Allied moves walking through Paoshan. I have a brigade still there, a brigade in Tuyun, a division in Kunming and a brigade still in Mengtze.

The China Ex. Army HQ will move into range of the coast now and several more divisions and arty units will form a large reserve to meet any invasion threats along the line from Pakhoi to Amoy. There's a lot of clear hexes here, but if he takes something in the area it'll be harder to support a 4E campaign here. I would expect a move on Hainan first if this is a goal. I have almost nothing there but some brigades allocated once they get to the area. The real defense of the area would be in the air and undersea. A swarm of subs is gathering again, and both Saigon and Cam Ran Bay are large air nodes. Haiphong and Samah will be soon as well.

BURMA: Troops are moving forward toward their uncertain future, but efficiently and in order. The Allies close the path by kicking out the last remaining AA unit. We have little supply on this road and it might be even less since the road link has now closed, but I'm hoping since the distances are fairly short that a supply route will still move between Bangkok and these troops. The 4Es bomb our biggest AA stack and lose almost 20 of their number. I like that. Keep it coming.

Against Bangkok CAP the Allies fly sweeps one hex distant over our retreating troops and get enormous results, about 5:1 on the day. This is all an experiment, so tomorrow I'll try LR CAP instead to get more numbers up immediately to the battle zone. Mostly Franks and Oscars at 31k with a few Frank 'r' higher at 35k and some bait Georges at 20k.

These little guys have been invaluable in moving supply and troops in the South DEI evacuation. I've lost a few, but they're cheap, quick and load fast so they can usually get out before strikes arrive to hit them.

Just always wish I could get it in late '43 instead of early '45.

Mine were moving at 1 month ahead every 10 days in the end! The engine bonus of course is the key. Getting them in 11/44 is great, but yeah, if we could get them when they were intended originally, sometime in 43, that would be huge.

From what I understand the problem was the engine, so maybe if the engine was heavily researched early and about 6 x 30 R n D factories were immediately started on Dec. 8, it might be possible to get it into early 44. A big investment, but worth it.

I've got 3 or 4 size 0(30) factories set up in one of my games and think I will move more there once I get the A6M5. I'm a big fan of the engine bonus (only 540 HI to get an extra 30% each month!), so I should have it once the factories are repaired. I'll let you know.

I think that getting the Sam in early 1944, and certainly in 1943, could do as much damage to an Allied player's pysche as massively winning a carrier battle in 1942. I wonder if that could even be game-breaking. How does it compare to the Hellcat/Corsair anyways?

Without being able to check just yet, I think it is roughly comparable to Allied CV fighters. It's fast, decently gunned, maneuverable, and armor 1. But as you can see above, without drop tanks it only has range 4/5.
