Obvert, have you had any significant impact on naval landings from shore based bombardments? I've been considering re-locating the big IJA cannon units (the big 20cm + cannons and morters) to garrison likely Allied invasion sites that lack coastal guns of their own, and to boost the rather lackluster (compared to the Allied counterparts) artillery wagons of the IJA divisions.

Would you recommend this, or suggest something different?

I'd say yes, but the issue Allied intel makes it less effective. If they want to they can use sigint to determine the best landing sites for various invasion paths and bypass anything that looks tough. I had some kind of nasty CD gun unit on each of the Marianas, and those did have some effect, but didn't really slow the invasions. The BBs took most of the hits and maybe a few of the amphib ships were hit. That was mid-44 though, when 25-50 ship APA TFs were used to drop a few divisions overnight!

I'd consider putting the CD units on locations that have to be invaded. So Saipan (which has a very good CD unit already), Tinian, Guam. Okinawa. The Bonins. Any atolls or small islands that force a shock will be most effective. Having the base mined heavily and with MTBs and small surface forces as well will add to the mayhem. Some heavy IJA arty helps too.

Now if your opponent isn't careful and well prepared for an invasion, and doesn't use the overwhelming force available, then the CD units could be very effective.

I was able to use the Wake unit twice as it was destroyed and rebuilt, then replaced on another island.

Have you found any real solution to the IJA becoming more and more outclassed as the war progresses? With Allies squads being better, Allied units stronger and with a greater firepower, is there a solution other than find some good terrain, dig in, and hope for a couple of weeks delay?

A wider question applies to the rest of the IJA/IJN. With less effective ships and aircraft, have you found any solution other than mass over quality?

I'm not sure I can give much advice as to what works well, as I think each game is a bit different, and each Allied player will use the forces at their disposal differently. The game mirrors the historical situation well enough that late war it's tough to slow the stream roller. Some players to look at are PzB, rader, Greyjoy and Nemo. Aztez (as Allies) had a couple of games go the distance recently where the Japanese player had seemingly done very well. Captain Cruft has an interesting strategic design about to be tested. I'm probably forgetting some others.

There are as many philosophies as there are games, but if the Allies play fairly well, they can force a lot of the endgame to be played on their terms.

6 - 7 February 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

DEI: I sent in two smaller groups of 2E kamis to the DEI and got lucky with no CAP up and a juicy troop convoy nearby. Not sure of the affect of the hits, but 5 of 26 planes hit the TF. Not a great percentage, but hopefully the damage was decent on the 5 ships hit.

Strangely, about 100 Avengers, Venturas and a few other types are bombing long abandoned forces in the lower DEI. Is this just training? I still have some supply in nearby bases, so there is a chance to get some kills here. I'll think about whether it's worth risking having to withdraw a group after jumping them.

STRAT BOMBING: Tokyo has now lost more than half of it's industrial production after the fires have gone out on the latest raid.

RECON: Mostly Luzon, Formosa and the Chinese coast.

CHINA: Troops are set up around Nanning. Recon shows the Allies marching a 200k troop army with nearly 1400 AFVs from Hanoi. There should be a bit more as well following. Seems lie around the 5-6k AV I have been expecting. It'll be tight to hold them with 'only' 3.5k AV of Japanese troops, but all are digging in, and really this is just to try to divert them to walk around the coast toward Canton/Hong Kong. That would take some time at least.

LUZON: A group of Franks transiting through Lingayen got lucky and intercepted a few big raids. Unfortunately quite a few pilots decided to ram the opposing bombers rather than shoot them down, so we lost a few more planes than I would have liked as well as some good pilots. One of the downsides to the kamikaze era, especially since it doesn't appear ramming always takes out the Allied bomber. about 20 2E and 4E are downed from flak and fighters.

Bombardments show our troops losing force from the constant air and sea bombardments. With the added quantity and quality of the Marines et all who arrived later here, and with the opening of the sea lanes to Allied BBs, there was no real hope of holding Manila. At 8kAV to 1.7k AV it'll fall with the next attack. I'm still glad I put these troops here if it led the Allies to commit all of that force, and it has lasted for a month, which is as much time as it took at each of the Marianas. Hopefully they'll need time to rest and plan for the next objectives.

HOME ISLANDS: I'm able to send supply out 3-4 times a week to China and Formosa now after a few weeks of austerity. Many small brigades that have been purchased back are being prepped for the islands near Okinawa and on toward Kyushu. They are all under the General Defense command and can be flown over which is useful. This wi also have to be the method of reinforcing Hokkaido since the command system is so rigid it doesn't allow transfer of troops between the Honshu and Hokkaido unless bought out, and of course that isn't affordable.

On one side it is nice to down enemy bomber during ram attack, but dark side is when experienced pilot is choosing to die for Emperor. I would be closer to accept that if they ram B-29 but B-25 is not worth of such sacrifice

I'm afraid to check how good these guys are since this is an expert group using Frank 'r.'

I wish there was the chance the pilot survives just as there is the chance the bomber survives. Some did in the war after mid-air collisions, surprisingly. Since there were 4E there it is surprising that they then only go for 2E planes. I'm sure it's just chance, but frustrating.

8 - 9 February 1945

MANILA FALLS!

LUZON: After bombardments that took about 200 off of the AV totals in Manila in one day, the city falls. The Allied stack takes few casualties while our troops are decimated. It will be quick in Luzon for the remainder of the mop-up. I'll do my best to fly out a few troops, maybe picking one of the more experienced divisions and sending it to the HI to refill. We'll see. For now it's time to hunker down and get the next defensive line in the best shape possible.

The Manila/Clark complex plus all of the other bases on rails he can build to level 9 fields in about a month should become the dominant air superiority zone on the map now I'm sure. Formosa will be a tough nut to crack by now, and there are a few surprises left in the Japanese arsenal, but it is never enough to stem the tide.

DEI: Jocke did not choose to move in to bomb the bases the kamis were flown from. It looks like he's content to move forward and let the LOC remain vulnerable. That's how much the Allies have I guess.

A bunch more planes hit small unit in the South DEI, especially dot base Moa. Definitely looks like some kind of training as there are no hits to the troops.

STRAT BOMBING: Just another fire-bombing hit on Manila.

RECON: Weird recons in the South DEI area?

Allied Aircraft sighted over Saumlaki

CHINA: Just a moving and waiting game here. some forward Allied units claim the vacant Lang Son and are now two hexes from our road block.

HOME ISLANDS: Lots of air groups transitioning through HI bases while waiting to fly in to areas around whatever turns out to be the next Allied target.

SUBS: The Brill is attacked near the Bonins. No hits.

DEI: Continued bombing of Moa. The Allies invade Bathurst Island for some reason. Tanks march across Java, scooping up undefended bases each day.

STRAT BOMBING: The Allies go for Hiroshima/Kure, but no hits are registered during severe storms> The Dinah NF take a beating.

CHINA: The blockade is ready to go near Nanning. More good divisions are now moving to the area SE of Kukong to act as reserve, ready to move toward the coast either around Hong Kong or Amoy.

LUZON: All troops are wrecked and there is no ability to resist the Alied pressure moving forward. All big divisions are moving toward the Northern areas to try to fly out the scraps. Jocke anticipates this and bombs the airfields at Laong and Vigan. This stops things for now. Cabanatuan falls.

HOME ISLANDS: A bunch of air groups gather for a try on the B-29 bases in the Marianas.

CENTRAL PACFIC: It's along shot I'll even be able to hit the fields at Saipan, but I have to try at some point. using the Ki-83 for the first time seems like a good moment to do it. I'll use Rota and the few bases in the Northern Marianas with some supply left. Some will have to fly from as far as Iwo Jima and Truk though. I'll bring in a kami group to use while the Cap is occupied as well.

Here is the idea. it'll be about 150 2E with the 97 plane Ki-83 sweeping and providing some LR CAP, plus a few other Oscars, Georges and Sams sweeping and escorting. Rota is a level 5 but that isn't very big for this with all of the 2E involved.

CENTRAL PACFIC: The operation against the Marianas ended up being a major frustration. I couldn't have had better circumstances, as NO CAP was up over Saipan!!!

Instead of decimating the base, only less than half of my groups flew and the 60+ bombers that dropped got a lot of damaged B-29 messages, but only ONE behemoth destroyed. If this is accurate it's a serious motivation killer. Sometimes this game is hard to deal with. All of those pilots were 70-80 ground bombing skill, hardly any planes were lost to flak, there was no CAP but maybe it was the Heavy Rain on the day that kept them from getting hits. Either way, I've now exposed all of those groups to counter attack and they'll be fragmented at best for a week. There was no testing of the Ki-83 but now Jocke is fully aware that they're flying. All in all a bad day.

To top it off the kamis flew, got to transports as usual, no CAP, and hit exactly one TK (four planes hit the same one in what oops like a 10+ ship TF ) and a KV! With no opposition against transports and tankers, shouldn't 50 exp 70 low naval pilots do better than this?

SUBS: The Brill is sent under after being sighted for a few days near the Bonins.

DEI: Still mass bombing at Moa. Still eating up a vacant Java.

RECON: In addition to the many recon sightings over the islands between Luzon and Formosa, there was another more ominous recon target on the 13th.

Allied Aircraft sighted over Kushiro
Allied Recon sighted over Kushiro
Allied Heavy Bomber sighted over Kushiro

Because this is one of the small coastal ports this can only mean one thing; feeling out Hokkaido for invasion. That gives me concern because as I've mentioned a lot recently the silly command system in the Japanese Home Islands doesn't allow troops on Honshu or the other connected islands to move to Hokkaido. I have a decent force there of about 2.5k AV, but a lot of it is small brigades still filling out. I'll keep monitoring the recon, but I also have some ideas about how to improve defenses up here.

LUZON: Clark succumbs to massive Allied force.

HOME ISLANDS: I begin to look through which units can fly and which can ship to destinations near to the HI. I still have to get more to the line of little islands right off the coast, and now it looks like it'll be imperative to begin sending some more troops to Hokkaido as well.

These seemingly train pilot much more efficiently than other groups and now allow EVERY other group to go into combat. A whole slew of them arrive tomorrow filling out many needs including at last a bunch of dedicated IJN fighter pilot trainers.

After the beta increases in flak effectiveness kamikaze ability is seemingly tempered a lot from what I used to see in other games. The hit ratio for one so far seem to be in the 15% range even without CAP or flak heavy combat ships in the TFs. I'l keep building a useful kami force but for now I'll retain most groups as conventional strike groups. The combination of D4Y4 Judys, Graces, Frances and Peggy (T) still can provide good striking power with excellent speed to target. Once the dedicated kami planes arrive in a few months I should complement these with 350mph 800kg bomb carrying LB that use the units which so far have been dedicated to truing and which I can begin to release into combat.

TRAINING GROUPS
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Just another short note to say this is basically caught up to the game now. A bit bored now as after the turn I sent this morning I haven't heard anything or gotten one back. Jocke's schedule can be tough as if I miss his morning window he can't do anything until the child is resting. We've done about 22-23 turns over the past two weeks though, which is just under a pace for two a day, (or will be if I get another tonight). At this stage of the game with so much to do for each turn that's not bad.

Anyway, it took forever this morning to set up all of the twenty-something training groups that arrived this turn. Here is a sample of one.

Does anyone know if it is true that these train quicker than other groups? It certainly seems to be the case. All LB will train low naval bombing.

- Heavy weather can certainly mess up a good raid. It's happened to me and is frustrating! Of course I don't know for sure if that's what happened internally or if a bunch of missed die rolls were also involved, etc.

- No idea if those groups train faster by design, but I would be very surprised if that were true. I notice that the group's leader has great leadership and inspiration, perhaps that is why?

I pay for this big time throughout the game, but it does seem important. I do think that's a part of it, but usually when a group is over-filled or has lower than it's full complement of planes it trains more slowly. These, with only 10 planes for 30 pilots in the original groups, are lightning fast, and their leaders aren't any better on average than the regular groups training.

I might do some tests as they go, just to see. I took a bunch of screenshots of the new groups, so I can have a look at how fast they went later, I guess Tracker would show that as well, so I'll check that with the groups that have already arrived and been training.

On a related note, float plane groups seem to train pilots slower than other groups, on average. I'm now disbanding a whole slew of them as it's not a good use of resources at this point. not much area to search anymore, either!

STRAT BOMBING: Shanghai is nailed for the loss of ~50 HI factories. I'll begin moving a few NF in, but of course I can't cover everything with them. Too bad the fleet flak doesn't take part in the calculation for the base, as there is A LOT here.

RECON: This is getting nerve wracking now. Although these are the first indications of interest up here EVER, it could be that the prep has been going toward the area for some time and this is just a confirmation of sigint information.

Allied Heavy Bomber sighted over Bihoro
Allied Aircraft sighted over Bihoro

CHINA: The defenses are about as good as I can make ten at this point. I've chosen not to garrison the coastal clear hexes heavily, as these can be quickly overrun even with good forts levels. I'm looking at having a fluid force in reserve to more along the rail and road system to react to any Allied moves. Compared to what the Allies can send though, this will likely be dwarfed if the Allies concentrate. They had 8-9k AV in Manila, another 12k in Thailand that is likely all now moving to China, and possibly more that will move from the DEI knowing that there is little opposition there. My only hope to hold for a while is that he waffles and doesn't just commit them all somewhere. Without stacking limits it's impossible to defend a concentrated move.

LUZON: Over Luzon the Ki-83 sees it's first action. I set 80 of them to go to Lingayan on LR CAP from Appari supported by another 40 Frank 'r' and 40 Ki-100. The Ki-83 and Franks took the high CAP at 32k while the Ki-100 took 20k. A spartan assignment given the kind of concentration the Allies are using here, and that proved to be the short-coming of this mission.

About 8 P-51 sweeps came in before the bombing runs in the morning, and these wore down the LR CAP sufficiently that there were no planes left up to greet the bombing runs (of over 500 4E and 2E). Altogether it wasn't bad, with slightly more Allied planes lost than ours, but now about 15 planes are grounded and will likely be lost to reprisals next turn. The rest move back to Formosa.

HOME ISLANDS: A zillion mediocre divisions arrive this month, and will begin filling out and prepping for various likely invasion target hexes, including spots in the clear especially. It's odd to think of preparing the HI for invasions after so long of having them outside the realm of action. I'm wondering even now with the beta changes if I could bout a successful set of strikes against the Allies if they came now. I have to say I'm just not sure. If he does come for Formosa that will tell me a lot more.

CENTRAL PACFIC: All planes are out of the striking bases now and there were no attempts to hit them on the ground. It's a very laisse faire LOC. I'll keep trying to chip away while that continues.

These had to be some of the better Allied fighter groups, so it feels good to knock down so many.

SUBS: A few subs seem to be moving around Singers. I have some good ASW there in the last major Southern outpost, and I'll set them within a hex of the base to shepherd the tankers in from Palembang.

DEI: Another one ship supply run makes it to Cam Ran but it then sunk by DDs. Still, about 2/3 of the supply made it, so that should keep these troops fed for a week or two. As a nice consequence, a DD hit a mine here too!

STRAT BOMBING: A big strike of B-29-25 goes for Osaka while the older B-29-1 go for Shanghai for the second night in a row. The Osaka strike hits a wall of NF, and I've been upping the pilot quality of those groups as much as possible. Good results but heavy NF losses as well. One flight of 3 B-29-25 shot down 6 NF!!! Luckily the weather was bad so the strike only nets 4300 fires. Still, that could burn a few hundred HI/LI, which will hurt. Looks like about 25 beasts lost to flak and NF on the night for the loss of 28 NF.

At Shanghai in two nights the Allies have destroyed 96 points of HI out of 120! I was too late adding the NF which arrived today. Oh, well.

RECON: Sapporo is a major target both days, and extended recon of the Okinawa area and islands around occurring as well. Looks like a survey the way these move over the days.

CHINA: With Shanghai losing industrial capacity is tough for the defense of the area. It'll be like China 42 reversed, but hopefully the terrain will help as it did then for the KMT. I wish I could turn off units building forts after a certain point.

LUZON: getting a good sampling of troops lifted, mainly focusing on big base forces and divisions. Like the units with experience, and getting enough out could mean I can keep some of them high. We'll see. Most will be lost and that will cost a lot to replace if I buy some back. We'll have to assess if that is still useful. The Allies do indeed launch reprisal strikes on Aparri and other bases to knock out damaged planes on the ground.

HOME ISLANDS: Moving a lot of units around to head out to the chain from Ishigaki toward Amami-Oshima and on to Kyushu. Lots of islands still need a bit more here.

The industry is staggering, but one nice thing about using HI points is that the fuel will last longer! I've really cut down on ship usage, which is positive at least.

Erik,

keep doing what you are doing ... you should be able to out-produce him with NF's compared to B29's. Once those are gone, you know he has to get a base within B24 range ... a LOT closer. Short option list. Okinawa/Hokkaido/Korea/Shanghai are about it. Okinawa/Shanghai are more exposed than the other two ... You know where he has to go, so prep accordingly. Be sure you have reaction forces prepped ... you will want to counter-invade to kill off those Marine ID's. Once they are gone, his amphib is really hurt. A lot of allied player fail to plan for failure ... meaning he won't have assets in place to salvage a bad LZ ... they count on the single hammer blow ...

Um, not unless I did something silly last turn without realizing it?

I'll check my settings as it should be a lot more. About to run a new turn.

Right now I'm still trying to cover all necessary spots, but I've allocated some of the newly arrived Manchurian divisions that I can buy out for 600 PP to a reserve. Then they'll have to fill. I have some also on Formosa to use if he tries to by-pass that, and I've kept a few transports in bases just in case. It does seem like it'll be tough to move around though if he wants to shut down areas of the ocean with his CV fleets.

I don't have many unrestricted divisions unfortunately after the Burma Army disaster, but the blessing is that almost all of the AA from that stuck pile was killed off and has been shooting down B-29s in Tokyo and Osaka. It was perfect timing actually, as they started to arrive back just as he began bombing the HI.

"Always, look on, the bright ... side of life!"

STRAT BOMBING
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After the posts in Greyjoy's AAR I just wanted to post some of the lists of bombing dates for the B-29 varieties to give players an idea of what is possible for each side. Later, after doing the current turn, I'll try to given idea of what the damage is like at this point and how that was achieved. Hopefully it will give both sides some for for thought.

I'll try to give my best estimates on losses for both the NF and the B-29.

B-29-1: These started in India (I haven't gone back to look at these yet) and took out most of the industry in China, Indochina, Thaiand and Malaya first. They then re-based to hit the oil and industry in the DEI. Again they re-based to get to the PI, Formosa and NE China industry.

EDIT:

Adding the earlier strikes all of the way up to the first the B-29 were involved in during May/44.

From the initial use of the B-29 on 5/2/44 until 5/23/44 there were 6 strikes during 21 days for an average of one every 3.5 days.

5/2 Rangoon (Night airfield attack - in combination with other 4E)
5/3 Rangoon (LI - destroyed all 40 points in one night)
5/6 Medan (Daylight attack - defended by 18 A6M5c which apparently shot down 20 B-29 with no losses) (Destroyed 150 oil points)
5/10 Rangoon (Daylight airfield strike)
5/18 Bangkok (HI)
5/23 Medan (Oil)

During the 30 day period from 6/2/44 until 7/1/44 there were 11 strikes for an average of one every 2.7 days.

6/2 Bangkok (LI)
6/5 Bangkok (LI)
6/8 Canton (HI)
6/12 Kunming (HI)
6/14 Hong Kong (HI)
6/17 Rangoon(Night airfield strike)
6/19 Lanchow(Oil)
6/22 Lanchow (Oil)
6/26 Lanchow (Oil) (Completely destroyed over these three attacks - Franks used as NF, with around 25 losses over the three days for about 5-7 B-29)
6/29 Hong Kong (HI)
7/1 Hong Kong (HI)

During the 43 day period from 7/12/44 until 8/25/44 there were 11 strikes for an average of one every 3.9 days.

7/12 Sian (OIL)
7/14 Canton (LI)
7/18 Kunming (LI)
7/20 Lanchow (Oil)
7/24 Medan (Oil)
8/1Medan (Oil)
8/2 Medan (Oil) (destroyed 97 points in two nights)
8/9 Medan (Oil)
8/20 Saigon (All 50 HI destroyed in one night) (heavy thunderstorms 0% moonlight!)
8/22 Saigon (LI)
8/25 Georgetown (HI)

From 9/6 at Singapore until 11/12 at Manila there were 22 missions, and some were within a day or two of each other. So over that 67 days the strike frequency was more like one every 3.1 days.

9/6 Singapore (Daylight port strike)
9/7 Soerabaja (
9/13 Manila (Daylight port strike)
9/18 Miri (Oil) (destroyed ~150 points in one night)
9/20 Tarakan (Oil)
9/23 Miri (Oil)
9/25 Palembang )Oil)
9/29 Miri (Oil)
10/1 Miri (Oil)
10/4 Lomblen (night mine-laying)
10/7 Palembang (Oil)
10/10 Miri (Oil)
10/16 Hong Kong (Daylight)
10/19 Soerabaja
10/22 Soerabaja
10/26 Soerabaja
10/27 Palembang (night mine-laying)
10/30 Soerabaja
11/1 Balikpapan (night airfield strike)
11/3 Manila
11/6 Kendari (daylight airfield attack)
11/12 Manila

After a break until a strike on 12/1 at Naha there were 21 strikes until the most recent at Shanghai on 2/16, making it one every 3.7 days over these 72 days.

12/1 Naha (daylight port strike)
12/3 (Daylight airfield strike - against CAP)
12/5 Manila
12/9 Manila
12/13 Manila
12/18 Takao
12/20 Takao
12/26 Manila
1/2 Manila
1/3 Manila
1/7 Saigon
1/9 Manila
1/12 Manila
1/16 Manila
1/17 Manila
1/25 Manila
2/1 Manila
2/2 Manila
2/9 Manila
2/15 Shanghai
2/16 Shanghai

B-29-25: These arrived in the autumn of 44 and based in Saipan and Tinian. They have been on a more sporadic pace hitting the HI, but with devastating results.

Using the B-29-25 from the Marianas the Allies have sent 10 missions to the HI from the first to Tokyo on 12/10/44 until the latest at Hiroshima on 2/11/45. So on average they were one mission every 6.4 days.

12/10 Tokyo (1st manpower raid)
12/18 Nagoya
12/24 Tokyo
12/30 Osaka
1/5 Tokyo
1/11 Maebashi
1/20 Tokyo
1/27 Osaka
2/4 Tokyo
2/11 Hiroshima/Kure

STRAT BOMBING: Shanghai is nailed for the loss of ~50 HI factories. I'll begin moving a few NF in, but of course I can't cover everything with them. Too bad the fleet flak doesn't take part in the calculation for the base, as there is A LOT here.

If i remember correctly ships anchored in ports use their AA guns to defend base with 50% efficiency

Interesting. No hits at all during the night, but most of the feet is here, so at 50% there should still be more flak than at Tokyo.

Do ships in hex but docked also add to the base AA?

Not sure what is up with that report, but all production is on as normal. Maybe it was a slow day at the factories? Hirohito's birthday?

STRAT BOMBING: Shanghai is nailed for the loss of ~50 HI factories. I'll begin moving a few NF in, but of course I can't cover everything with them. Too bad the fleet flak doesn't take part in the calculation for the base, as there is A LOT here.

If i remember correctly ships anchored in ports use their AA guns to defend base with 50% efficiency

Interesting. No hits at all during the night, but most of the feet is here, so at 50% there should still be more flak than at Tokyo.

Do ships in hex but docked also add to the base AA?

6.1 TASK FORCES AND SHIPS
Ships begin scenarios either in TFs, or “at anchor” in a port. Ships that are at anchor will not
move, but they will defend the base if attacked, adding half their AA firepower to the base in
defense of the port.

So it look that they fire only if port is attacked

EDIT: The STRAT BOMBING post above is edited. It's interesting to see what has happened over 10 months of the B-29 being active in game. I'll post some numbers to show the destruction achieved after this update.

DEI: I sent in some Georges and Oscars to hit the milkruns in the DEI. Firstly, in a stroke of bad luck, some of the strafing B-25s show up first and their forward firing defensive guns chew up the fighters, even though outnumbered 3:1. Also, after getting damaged 3 pilots decide to ram a few planes for the Emperor. Not much was left for the later bombing runs, and on the day 15 fighters are lost for 5 bombers. So much for that idea.

Also, Graces flying from Peleliu find a convoy, but it's outside their search arc!! They get a good look at it, somehow, and fly in the afternoon right into a massive LR CAP from Yap. About 30 are lost for no hits. No other planes are in the area to have found these so I have no idea if I can trust search arcs at all.

On the 19th the revenge strike on Saumlaki, which based the Georges for the previous day, was set at 6k and more bombers were lost to balloons than to the fighters the previous day! About ~10 are lost to ops out of the 140 or so planes that struck the base on the day.

STRAT BOMBING: The beasts hit Changsha in their continuing clean-up of Chinese industry. Only a few points of HI left at Changsha.

RECON: Some new recon in Central China.

Allied Aircraft sighted over Kweiyang
Allied Recon sighted over Wuchow
Allied Aircraft sighted over Tuyun

LUZON: Bataan falls, and the 4E and 2E concentrate on the South while the fields are fixed in the North. This allows some important removals. All of the divisions on the island are now between 66-80 exp. So far the 6th has been completely flown out, the 56th is 50% out, the 107th is 60% out, and several others are around 20-30% out. Jocke will be not so pleased about that, but the Allied bombers have concentrated on troops and fields in the South and Laong, San Fernando and Vigan fixed enough to fly troops out. High ops losses, and my transport pools are at 0 for all airframes, but for experienced unrestricted divisions I'll make a good many sacrifices.

HOME ISLANDS: I just realized the islands off the SW coast of Kyushu are under the Southern Army HQ!!! Who's idea was that?!? Doesn't make any sense when the entire island of Formosa is General Defense! It really complicates matters as I'll have to pay PPs to send troops there, even for the little garrisons I've planned. It has to be done, but it really is too bad.

These guys are coming soon, but I don't know if I'll be able to make enough to do much. Only 30 factories in R n D and I'm loath to change out any others due to supply. It puts into question the many light bombers groups I'd planned to sue with these specialists. Now I may have to drag out the Ann, the Mary and the Sonia.

Hi Obvert - great AAR. I really need to get back to work on mine.

To the point above, somewhere I read that you can switch those bases over to General Defense by taking a small, cheap (PP), unit, un-restrict it, move it to the base you want to flip, change it back to Gen Def, then you will be able to change the base. Rinse and repeat for each base you want to make GD. I don't think it costs much to change the base, and then you can use air trans to move units to those islands without having to buy PPs for each unit.

Just a thought.

Thanks. Glad you're finding something here.

Yeah, I've done the switch several times on various other islands near the HI, but with these I only really want to put naval guard units there anyway. So it's using too many PPs either way, if you see what I mean. I'll probably switch a few and then see if some small units come back I can change as they arrive for a lower PP cost to save there. I am literally always at zero in PPs, from day one.

To add to this, the PP cost is determined on the port and airstrip size. A small 1,1 base will cost a day or two of PP's, a bigger base will cost much, much more. That means it's only really effective for the small bases around Japan.

What is worthwhile, however, is building the small bases up using air-transported engineers and flying the General Defence restricted air units out to operate from these bases.
