HOME ISLANDS: I just realized the islands off the SW coast of Kyushu are under the Southern Army HQ!!! Who's idea was that?!? Doesn't make any sense when the entire island of Formosa is General Defense! It really complicates matters as I'll have to pay PPs to send troops there, even for the little garrisons I've planned. It has to be done, but it really is too bad.

Hi Obvert - great AAR. I really need to get back to work on mine.

To the point above, somewhere I read that you can switch those bases over to General Defense by taking a small, cheap (PP), unit, un-restrict it, move it to the base you want to flip, change it back to Gen Def, then you will be able to change the base. Rinse and repeat for each base you want to make GD. I don't think it costs much to change the base, and then you can use air trans to move units to those islands without having to buy PPs for each unit.

Just a thought.

Thanks. Glad you're finding something here.

Yeah, I've done the switch several times on various other islands near the HI, but with these I only really want to put naval guard units there anyway. So it's using too many PPs either way, if you see what I mean. I'll probably switch a few and then see if some small units come back I can change as they arrive for a lower PP cost to save there. I am literally always at zero in PPs, from day one.

To add to this, the PP cost is determined on the port and airstrip size. A small 1,1 base will cost a day or two of PP's, a bigger base will cost much, much more. That means it's only really effective for the small bases around Japan.

What is worthwhile, however, is building the small bases up using air-transported engineers and flying the General Defence restricted air units out to operate from these bases.

That is how I've done it. The cheapest unit I've found is an AF Coy, especially if I get them as they're rebuilding. A few of the bases have a bigger port, or port and airfield, and so cost more. All of this is just a drain on getting units put together that have pieces in various HQs, getting some more bought back and everything else I need PPs for.

I think as the situation becomes more desperate for Japan the PPs should increase, as there would be less reason to keep units restricted if they are needed in vital defensive areas, like Hokkaido, Okinawa and the Bonins for instance. Some stuff can't fly.

In a similar situation for the Allies I think PPs should increase if Japan crosses the LOD in India or OZ, or invades the West Coast. There is no way troops would be held back i these situations.

PP's, I think, deserve a major overhaul. For me, at least, a flexible and reactive PP system would make a far bigger impact on the game than mods tweaking various things or changing the Japanese set-up.

While PP's make sense at the start of the war when both sides had military commitments elsewhere, they make less and less sense as the war develops.

The idea that the IJ High Command doesn't have the political power to release a division from the Home Islands for Burma in 1942 makes a fair bit of sense. What makes less sense is if they lack the political power to send it over a tiny stretch of ocean to Hokkaido when the Americans are breaking down the doors.

Conversely, the Americans and British can't divert units from other theaters or take planes from the production line that weren't historically sent to the Pacific.

In my mind, PP's would react to the map's circumstances, and the PP cost of units would decrease as various map sectors were taken by the opposing side. If Pearl Harbour was occupied, there would be a lesser cost to release American units for the Pacific theater. If America occupies the Kuriles, the same for Japan. Ditto with the British and a Japanese occupied Ceylon and the Austrilians with Japanese on the mainland.

DEI: Happily, the Allies have continued bombing in the DEI, with about 120-30 2E hitting Saumlaki, where my Georges were based and where a few still sit on the fields. They're slowly disappearing, but not nearly as quickly as the bombers hitting them, which lose 5-10 in ops per day. Some of that is due to hitting balloons in the base as they're flying at 6k. Shhhhhhhh!!

RECON: The next target for HI bombing? a lot of Central China being reconned as well.

Allied Aircraft sighted over Nagoya

CHINA: Okay. Big news. the Chinese are moving out of Chungking. While not unexpected, it's amazing to think they have the supply to think of doing something. I guess with enough guys wielding pitchforks and axes you could challenge an experienced division or two, right?

Nothing would make me happier than these guys shocking over a river with no supply and losing 200k+ troops. A big supply shipment is on the way to China, but there aren't many forces left to deal with these in the center. I do have some good reserve brigades I'll send up there.

LUZON: I don't really understand the use of 4Es and 2Es anymore by the Allies. They must have good recon on my troops everywhere, and must see that I've basically removed most of 6 divisions (although beat-up ones) from Luzon. Yet the Allied bombers continue to hit one base at a time, en masse, all 400-500 of them. It's closed for a day, then opened enough to start flying troops again after 2-3 days. At the same time the ports are never touched and I can fly from there easily. Concentration has served the Allies well in areas, but as a general approach it can be exploited by simply using the areas that are not concentrated on. If you're reading both sides, mum's the word.

I have a feeling though that once the discovery is made there will be another discussion about flying troops out. I'm bracing for that one, but still moving forward with the operation. It's too important right now to get even half strength 'free' divisions out of Luzon, especially if they keep some of their experience. They will head immediately to Tokyo to get repaired more quickly. Only a few even have fragments left on Luzon, and I'm sending those directly into the fray.

HOME ISLANDS: Supply will be tight as massive shipments roll out. I hope to then let it catch up for a week or so. A lot of troops are coming soon though too, so we may reach a breaking point where I have to shut it all down. Hopefully not the week the Allies move forward!

As promised earlier here is a shot of all of the important industry destroyed (minus oil, which was also a big target but which doesn't matter much at this point since al lot it is out of reach except in the North). Only the Ha-43 engines will be repaired.

These are also only the bases that are still in the Empire. Others like Saigon, Bangkok, Soerabaja and Manila were ruined as well.

DEI: Still bombing Saumlaki, still taking ops losses to balloons.

STRAT BOMBING: Nothing for a bit. Wonder if there is a re-basing to Manila going on right now for the ones that were in the Marianas. It would make sense, brining them closer and might account for the recon below ... .

RECON: Some more in Central China, and an interesting flyover of Fukuoka.

Allied Aircraft sighted over Liuchow
Allied Aircraft sighted over Kweiyang

Allied Recon sighted over Fukuoka

CHINA: not sure how much the Chinese are moving yet. Still nothing has crossed the border from Chungking. On two roads they'll have to cross rivers into +2-3 terrain to reach their destinations. If they head to the mountains they'll face level 9 forts at Kunming. Either way the first attack will be a doozy.

LUZON: The Allies contiue with the big bombardments, hitting Aparri these turns. They take out nearly 1k troops each day, which is great. The quicker the better so I can get some of these base forces bought back (cheaply) to the HI.

A fast transport TF heading for Laong was attacked by Avengers and B-25s but none hit the ships. About 30 bombers were downed on the day. I'll try to sneak a few TFs in under LR CAP to Laong to get some of the brigades I've not had a chance to fly out. Not much else these whips will be doing, so worth a try.

A look at the South China Sea area. With all of the troops flying into Formosa and the planes flying them, it's been hard to keep the bases in supply. I've got more moving out in the next few days.

DEI: Singers will be a minor fortress, much like for the Allies in the beginning of the game. About 1k AV will make it there, and the supply will be very good for a long stand. Might as well make him fight for it if he wants it.

STRAT BOMBING: The B-29s finally chose a base with NF, and we got maybe 3-4 of them for about 3 NF lost. They still took out most of the remaining LI at Hong Kong.

LUZON: The fast transport turned into a small fiasco. They picked up the troops, but not during the night, and were left sitting at Laong. Our LR CAP didn't make it to defend the ships, and 5 APD and one AMC lost.

RECON:As shown in the report below, it's tough to fly recon missions these days! Lost a few over Manila and Haiphong. I'll suspend daily flights and just use them when I need to.

Looks like the Allies are gathering a bit of a megastack to blow through the defenses on the outskirts of Nanning. It might just do that, judging by the numbers here. Ahh, the joys of playing without stacking limits.

SUBS: One of our supply runs is hit on the way to Cam Ran by the Kraken (one of the most well named subs of the war). It decided to attack on the surface, but the xAKL, the Hinode Maru, hits the sub twice with it's own deck gun (8cm I think) and the sub commander decides to submerge due to damage! It's the little things at this stage that make the turns worth it.

The ship reached Cam Ran but did not disband as ordered before an air strike came in and sank the ship with two 500lb bombs.

CHINA: Supply is low, but starting to flow around now. The Allies are moving up to face the troops near Nanning. We'll see how much soon.

LUZON: Kamis went for some AMs near Lingayen, sinking one for about 15 Frances. The ratio has really sucked so far.

Lots of units are now being destroyed by Allied attacks on Luzon. A few division fragments are already gone. Now if he just goes right in and attacks Laong, maybe I can get the rest of the few guns and mechanized transport wiped out.

HOME ISLANDS: A bunch of new divisions arrive. I should be able to buy about one every ten days, and then they'll have to fill out. It could get a decent sized defense force to Hokkaido within 30-50 days though, and that's what needs to happen. I also have an unrestricted division at Fusan building up and one coming back in from the Kuriles as well. It's making me feel a bit safer after all of the recent recon up there. Of course, if the Allies bring enough, they could land anywhere right now.

I finally turned off the A6M factories. There are 500+ of the A6M5b in the pool and after the damage to the engine factories at Tokyo, I now need to start conserving the Ha-35. There are 700 in the pool now, but the Tsurugi is still to come online in about a month.

Yeah, which is great and I can buy them out cheap. In a month or two they'll be filled out and ready to go, plus free to send to wherever I need them.

Japan in 1945: Where trashed divisions are seen as a good thing!

At this late stage, where's your main focus for reinforcement? Deploying them to Formosa must be getting risky now, surely?

Brand new low exp trashed divisions! But the older ones with 75-80 exp that are trashed are even better!

There's not much risk in getting them there, but with the massive troop allocation that's now on Formosa there is not much need for more. It's got about 8k AV spread through the bases, and a few CD gun equipped base forces in addition to the set forts.

Of course he could move a CV death star anywhere right now and close off the sealanes. Can't do much about that.

downside of the div's coming in at 1/3 is that now it also take supply in addition to ARM/VEH to fill them out.

CV Deathstars => 1000 plane kami attacks. You should be able to get 3 -5 CV's every time you do that. 3-4 attacks and there is no more death star.

I'm curious if that rule works with the beta. I don't think it'll be the same as LBA comes out in so many small packages all spread apart that it's not likely to get enough escorts to break a lot of bombers through. Also the flak is stronger and so using planes like the Oscar will be tougher.

So far I've not converted enough groups to get to 1000 kamis as there are still more well-trained pilots in the pools than kami pilots, and I'd rather have some planes come back if possible. My hit ratio for kamis with no CAP has been atrocious so far, even against poorly escorted merchants and troopships. It just seems that the flak has changed the game as has the coordination differences.

28 February - 4 March 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Another month into 45, and things are relatively quiet.

DEI: Batavia falls. There is little to stop the Allies in this area as nearly everything has been evacuated to Singapore.

STRAT BOMBING: Nothing lately. Something big seems to be brewing, or perhaps there aren't many intact groups of the B-29-25 left.

CHINA: The Chinese continue to move and the Allied troops in the South engage our blockade. The Allied Mega-stack is at 8500 AV and toped up with arty and support. This looks like it could punch through. Yuck. We've got good forts but it's only +2 terrain.

Tried a sweep with Ki-83 at Haiphong and got about 1:2 against Brit T-Bolts.

LUZON: Troop remnants from Aparri are vaporized. Iba is about to be annihilated and several units are destroyed. Some of these I've removed pieces of, but most will simply be wiped out. All of the six divisions, all of which are about half strength, had their fragments destroyed and will now be able to rebuild fully and more quickly.

I tried a sweep into the thick of Allied CAP with the Ki-83. Not a good idea. Lost about 15 for about 2-3 Allied fighters over Batangas and will have to sit for a few turns recovering.

SUBS: A LOT of subs are heading into the North China Sea. Something is happening. Looks like at least about 30-40 of them, a lot new that I've not seen before. I've got the ASW air sent in and a bunch of ASW TFs moving around as well. Some are hit hard. It'll be interesting what is going to happen next!

STRATEGY: I've come to the rather sobering conclusion that I really can't do much in 45 to slow the Allied progress. They can move on land with support of 400-500 4E and plow through resistance that in 43-44 would have stopped them cold. They can move anywhere with impunity on the sea and land with overwhelming force (without stacking limits) to take any point on the map. They can field more (yes more!) better fighters and take out any airfield complex within days.

This is what all Japanese players face eventually, but I have to say the beta has also changed the game from what I've seen in a lot of earlier AARs. From experiences so far I have little hope that massed LBA, kamis and the KB, even if perfectly placed to cooperate in defense, could really make a dent in the Allied Death Star. This is probably better for the game than the kind of raids that left rader vs GJ in an unfinished limbo. It probably means the Japanese player will simply have to suck it up, put a few dents in the clear coat of the Allies brand new Haze gray, and play out the turns, and it's a lot more turns than that 'difficult' part for the Allies when in 42 things aren't going well. Not so fun, but it is still interesting.

So, the strategy? Well, it's simple. Throw as much in way as I can and hope something hits and something holds. Formosa is hefty roadblock, but as will be seen in this and the next updates, it might simply be by-passed. That was not unexpected, but it's a trade-off. Something has to be built to scary fortress levels, and at least in Formosa it's close enough to China to get things off if needed. It would be very hard to isolate. This has left the defenses of the other islands, like Okinanwa, Hokkaido, still developing. I also have to start thinking of Honshu and Kyushu defense.

STRAT BOMBING: No strat bombing, but on the 8th the B-29s hit Shanghai with a zillion mines. I had NF up which of course did nothing. The minesweepers are heading in, and I don't dare move until they at least make some kind of a path. The entire KB is here, and ...

... the Allied CVs move up to near Okinawa!! Not sure yet if there is a target, but some landing ships look to be in the groups of TFs there. Also, if they want to try their luck on a raid at Shanghai, they are in range. There are 500 fighters in the base, but of course some bombers would get through and most of the fleet is either docked or disbanded here. Getting interesting.

CHINA: The Nanning roadblock is getting a solid pounding from bombardments. When supply is full the defense responds fairly well, and when it's not, it looks pretty bad. The Allies look to be heading around the block with some small forces toward the coast and a larger force inland, looking to be moving on the small road toward Nanning itself. That is fine. It's not likely enough to take the base even with the 500 AV there, but another division is on the way as well. That accounts for most of the Allied troops in the area now, which is good as none were used to take the easy bases along the coast amphibiously. It looks like the Chinese will move on Kweiyang. That would mean a river crossing into level 6 forts and maybe 1500 AV of experienced and supplied divisions. I'm feeling okay about that. If he has little supply. A big if.

LUZON: Iba is being ground to dust.

HOME ISLANDS: Some strike planes are set up in Kanoya and Kagoshima. Other bases are getting organized to strike, and Taihoku on Formosa is set to a 5 hex range in case he goes for islands near Ishigaki. Also, a small strike force is set to go at Okinawa, just to see what happens. Likely sacrificial, but if he goes between them all each could be an important part of a decent strike. Time to try something anyway.

Interesting to have a day with no air losses at all! Very rare for the Japanese.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

For the first time in a while I'll not be eating turkey and pumpkin pie. No family trip this year and the lady has simply another normal work day here in London. Luckily I've got the usual 4 day weekend. I might have to make my own pumpkin pie at least!

HOME ISLANDS: Okinawa is invaded!!! Not unexpected. On the 9th a decent strike goes for the Allied CVs but can't break through. About 250 planes lost for no gains. So, the Allies pound in with 5000 AV and 9+ divisions to Naha. I'm glad I didn't fortify more here. It's simply untenable against this kind of invasion. The 400 AV of a rebuilding division and a brigade will fall quickly. I had another brigade to combine with this and another few brigades which would have brought total AV to 1.2k within a few weeks, but it's better they're elsewhere now as this is way too much to consider holding against.

I may now at least be able to battle close to home where there are more big bases and where the Allies will have to think about a surface threat again. It's a big turn. Do I risk sending out the KB? Try for an 8 hex strike?

SUBS: hitting a lot of subs, but there must be more than fifty in the North China Sea now. They've shot a lot of misses at my ASW ships, and we've miraculously avoided all hits. Small successes.

DEI: Since the Allied CVs look to be occupied doing bigger and better things, I'll start a succession of supply and oil transports through the South China Sea.

STRAT BOMBING: More mines!! Yikes! The sweepers move in and promptly 3 x AMc are lost to hits while sweeping. About 200 mines are swept.

CHINA: The blockade holds!!! The Allies get a 1:2 and take almost double the casualties of the IJA troops. He'll make them up, and ours will take longer, but this at least will make him take more time, maybe pile more on top. Ahhhhhhh. Something positive!

In my late game testing, I have always had to convert all of my little PB's into AM/AMc's. I find that the PB's are pretty useless after allied torps become real. But, once the B29 arrive with their mine laying ability, I need AM/AMc's everywhere. And a LOT of them as you can get hit with so many mines so fast.

Japan's short on good minesweeping assets to start with, there are so few that do 18-19knts (and none of the fast minesweepers that the Americans get, IIRC), so the AM and AMc's grow more and more essential as the war progresses. Sadly, they're nearly as much "one-shot" assets as kamikazies. For what it's worth, I try to detail one to every medium and major port, and have a half-dozen or so on hand at a nearby hub to deal with mines.

Plus, at this late stage they'd be as well clearing mines by sailing into them.

That sparks a question Obvert, considered using those stocks of redundant PB's to mask a surface attack? I can only imagine the chaos that would follow if two dozen or more PB's sortied for Okinawa with a good IJN surface combat task force hidden amongst them. Even the ample Allied surface assets would be stretched dealing with ten or twelve task forces of two or three PB's, let alone how dispersed his air strikes would be. Idealy, the IJN ships would slip in while the Allied covering forces reacted after the PB's, and even at worst, the Allies would be low on ammo by the time the IJN showed up.

Imagine it as Operation Ten-Go writ large, with the PB's included as ablative armour.

Unconventional, yes, but at this stage with Japan there's no point leaving them in port for a Liberator raid to wipe them all out.

Nearly all of the PBs have been made into AMc and a few are ACM, more for mining than mine-tending at this point.

There are other Es that would be better heading as a shield for good combat TFs, but Okinawa is really out in the middle of a lot of sea. From anywhere it's a flank run and the Allies have a zillion ships in the area.

Due to the mines at Shanghai there was no way to react to this move with the IJN without a huge risk of ending up damaged, slow moving, ten sitting ducks for a later air strike form the Allied CVs. I had to let the sweepers pick up for a few days before trying to get out of the hex. The trouble is ALL bases are in range of the B-29, so none is safe from this kind of massed mining. I only hope the DL on the mine-field s high enough to allow a break out tomorrow.

Keep the idea in mind, though, as the Allies get closer to the Home Islands and their ability to manuver is reduced. I'm sure you can see the carnage that such a move would cause to the Allied fleet as the warships start to react left, right and center, and imagine the chaos that would result if ships broke through to the amphib forces and caused them to abort the landing.

E's, PB's, AM, AMc's, whatever. What ships you'd be using is immaterial, everything the IJN has is outdated. Hell, I'd even advocate xAK's if I thought the merchant crews and captains would go along with sailing to certain doom.

Speaking of xAK's, have you converted any of them to PB's or other auxiluaries? Even a notional military value is better than none at all.

All of the Ansyu class that can be converted are converted to PBs.

Over the course of the game various things like what you're saying have happened. The Allies in this one tend to use massive TFs, and in the Marianas several small SAGs got into the middle of things causing multiple collisions each time they engaged an amphib TF, and they even got in to hit some CVEs. It's entirely possible to do what you're advocating, but the closer to the HI the better.

As for carnage, the real damage would be caused by the Allied DDs. At this stage Allied landings are a one day affair. They can dodge and weave and hide intentions to the point that it really doesn't matter what I send to the area, I won't know where the landing will be until the day of, and I won't be able to really get into those ships unless he gets lazy. For this one there were several cruiser TFs and probably 6-7 DD TFs alone, as well as probably a bunch of ASW TFs, the big bombardment groups of fast BBs and the CVs. All of these are shielded by the wall of subs to the North.

None of this means I'm sitting on my a**, mind you. The fleet will move from Shanghai, and it will try to get into the fray. If no mines are hit by anything important, then it could get interesting.

That's the spirit! No sense is giving the Allies some free ships when the end comes at last, let them go down fighting. I'm sure it's hard sacraficing the assets that you've so carefully husbanded, but at this point, they're worthless, and you might as well chance your luck for an American CV or two.

The KB, as it is, is still a potent force if used carefully and aggressively. A hard balance to achieve! It's shown i nthe PI about 6 months ago that even against double the numbers it could strike and get away if the 8 hex range worked out.

This time the LBA could be a big factor, which is what I was waiting all of this time for. If he guesses my movements and comes West we could be crushed, but that will also open up 600+ strike planes from Taihoku. A lot of decent fighters will hover over the KB if all goes to plan, and while that won't keep everything away, it's a better time than I've seen and definitely better than waiting for Naha to have 500 P-51s.

All could fizzle into nothing if everything stays out of range, too. We'll see. First thing though is getting out of mineville and dodging revenge-mined subs!

I know a lot of you are reading both sides, so in the interest of seeing what happens, try not to give even seemingly innocuous advice in Jocke's AAR right now, please. I'd like one more chance at glory before the wheels come off for good! (Plus it's pretty interesting to see what would happen at this stage of the war, especially in one of the first games using he beta to get this far).

QUICK UPDATE!

SUBS: Oh, my. The whole lot of Allied subs moved toward the Formosa coastline, either in a good move by Jocke or a happy coincidence for the Allies. Four different CV/CVE were attacked with only the Unryu taking a hit. The Nagato also took two. Both are not too bad off considering.

HOME ISLANDS: Naha falls 25:1. Another 1k AV would still not have done much here with this kind of force. maybe a week. So this will open a new phase of the game. Defense of the Home Islands proper.

KB: The KB sprint achieved very little and now there is some BIG DANGER tomorrow. We're smack dab on top of about 25 known subs and possibly more unknown. That after sinking or severely damaging at least five during the turn.

All Allied ships move out of the way other than two injured DDs that are sunk.

SUBS: The number of subs out here is staggering. I got lucky with just two ships hit, and that both are still afloat. Tomorrow will be interesting. Not sure how to get out of this area without more damage, but a lot of ASW assets are here, so it's possible after the 5-6 subs that are sunk yesterday and the high DL on the rest could help the escape. I might try some thing a bit daring!

DEI: A bunch of Allied DBs finally got in range of Palembang. Lots of little TKs sunk.

RECON: More looking at Hokkaido.

CHINA: Most of the mines are likely cleaned up now after nearly 300 were cleared overnight for the loss of two E and one more AMc.

I may move the troops near Nanning back now that they've inflicted some pain on the Allies. They are showing a retreat of at least some troops, so it makes sense to head back to Nanning.

HOME ISLANDS: Reorganized some things and Im sending more air support to the West, where I'll need lots soon.

Here is the shot of how far away all of the Allied ships got after a one day drop-off at Naha.

One other thing is that we had a sync bug issue. Not sure if it's connected, but a large amount of fighters were lost in A to A, and unless I'm really more tired than I think I can't find any A to A combat in the turn at all. I don't remember any either. Hmmm.

Hi obvert - since I'm a new subscriber to this AAR, and I just noticed your CS's are not converted, could you let me know your reasoning for that? I always assumed most folks bumped all four CS's to CVLs, so I'm curious if that was a conscious decision or if you just didn't get around to the conversions.

First thing to note. Japanese side do not experiencing sync bugs. It is only allied thing.
What You see in replay is always true.

As for a2a loses. I see two explanation for that.

First - most probable in Your case. When Naha fall and planes on ground where destroyed they where counted as a2a loses. I see that few times in my game. In such situations loses are cont as ground, sometimes as op and sometimes as a2a

Second - Leaky CAP/LCAP meet enemy CAP and combat was fight but in such situations game is not showing combat animations. Similar to Transport planes interception phase.

Hey. I like the versatility of keeping these as CS for a few reasons. I did convert Mizuho as it was too slow to keep up anyway and the speed is up to 24 knots after, making it useful as a CVL.

1. The conversions happen over such a long time and it's usually right in the middle of 42-43 when you're having the most defining CV battles> I like that extra search and ASW there when it can have the most effect. It can extend the search without over-using the DB/TB groups for this. I usually do use the DB/TB on 10% search, but the FP do night search and lower search bands to really see more effectively what is out there.

2. I like some to re-size float plane groups up and down. I made a lot of them bigger early, and later I've either disbanded or made them smaller again.

3. They can carry CAP with Rufe's and then Rex's, which I usually put low to hit TB if they are using FF. This can help in earlier CV battles.

Naha cold explain about 50 of them but unless it's inflating numbers I don't know about the rest.

There were no areas I can see where groups are short of fighters or pilots, although it was late and I only looked quickly.

Maybe just another mystery, or maybe the sync bug affects all kinds of reports, not just the replay?

12 - 14 March 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: At least 20 subs hit over these days, and probably 5-7 more sunk. No major losses to the Allied menace, but one SC vaporized. Looks like they're all heading to the PI to replenish and prepare for the next mass movement.

DEI: Lose a few more TK that I forgot to rebase to Singers. Not much else they can do now anyway, as I can't really sneak anything past the roaming DDs in the South China Sea. Tried a few single ship TFs to no avail.

STRAT BOMBING: The B-29 mining is still taking it's toll on minesweepers. Probably 500+ mines are swept just these three days, and another 4-5 AMc and I think my last DMS are lost hitting mines. Converting all of the last PBs to AMc now.

CHINA: Troops in the blockade along the Burma road into China are ht by aerial bombing. Interesting. The Allies move 200+ 4E over here to disrupt these troops. They're taking some heavy losses as there is no AA here, but that' s actually a good thing. If there was AA burning supply it'd be tough to keep the troops fed. Now at least they're doing okay, disruption is in the 20s and they're dug in with 2-3 forts. We'll see if the Allies roll the dice and come over the river, shocking into a mountain hex. Curious to see that one.

Elsewhere the block on the road near Nanning is moving back to across the river into Nanning. It'll also take some heavy losses in movement, but then the Allies will have another river crossing proposition. If they choose to go around they'll have a long slog over yellow roads to Liuchow. That is a vulnerable base, being in the clear. If they get to that point I may just have to split forces and defend the good territory to the East and North separately. I have a feeling though he'll push North to Canton/Hong Kong. Those will require some work, hopefully.

HOME ISLANDS: Bombing Naha fields goes well. No resistance. It's nice to have big HI bases to fly from. Getting decent coordination. No sign of the Allied fleets, and mine just feints into the South China Sea for a day. Back to hugging Formosa now. I'll look for spots, but won't jump at everything. If he wants the KB he can easily take it out, but there will be losses if the Allies get close enough to Formosa. The Taiho and Hyuga rejoin the fleet. All BBs are now here minus Nagato which is nearing Nagasaki to repair sub TT damage.

The day after the KB move, surrounded by subs, I decided to simply move one hex and hug the coast i nthe shallows near Formosa. I predicted to lose a ship or two, but in fact the Allied subs moved along one path to attempt to get in the way of either a direct retreat or advance. I then sent every ASW ship available to guide the KB around to the back of Formosa, which also worked smoothly. Minor, but satisfying.

SUBS: All Allied subs have departed.

STRAT BOMBING: The Beasts go for Shanghai again. They get a good portion of industry, but the night fighters take out a few.

CHINA: The retreating troops moving toward Nanning become the target of most of the Allied air forces. They lose over the two days more to the aerial bombing during two days than they lost in the Allied ground attack in their previous position blocking the road. They've now moved into Nanning, where the woods and forts should provide relative safety. The force is still fairly strong at 3400 AV. Enough to repel a shock over the river at least.

The Allies take out a few fields and are obviously bombing for supply in the mountains. It'll be a long campaign if they continue bombing troops and fields in China, so I say keep it coming. The Chinese are still advancing, which is a worry. We'll see if they move across the river.

HOME ISLANDS: The Allies move up again toward Okinawa. Their strike planes found an out of place amphib TF that I'd not set to stay at Nagasaki. They took out about 5 xAP and lost 90 strike planes to the CAP bleeding from Kyushu. The Franks and Sams did well.

A few kamis fly that are set slightly too far out. No results. One Frances does get through and does not hit the DE it aimed for. This initiates an inquiry from Jocke about the use of 1k settings for naval attack.

Apparently he thought we had made an agreement to not use this altitude setting. It certainly wasn't part of our recent HR renegotiation that he wanted to begin using LR CAP to better support his bombing missions. I'm a bit confused as I would never had made this agreement. It would negate all of the low naval trained pilots for any non-kami strike. Not ready for that even now, and I certainly wasn't earlier. In fact I've been using low naval attack throughout the game with no comment previously. Not sure why it stood out now.

He is not asking for an HR apparently, but just thought there was an agreement. I assured him there was not and it seems we're on track with no problems. In the beta and with the conditions of late war playing Japan in Scenario 1 I highly doubt we'll see any unusually effective low naval strikes. Hopefully some sunk ships at some point, but not fleets going down.

I had wondered why the B-25D1 strike recently came at 6k. Previous strikes had all been at 1k, so I am sure those will go back down to where they are most effective, which is as it should be.

Sucks to lose ships, but good to hit Allied strike planes. Of course a very small percentage of the whole. Gives me ideas though.
