I'd say, load up the game as the Allies and look at the device pools. It should say... But I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

On the night fighter topic I put this together tonight by looking at the upgrades to path for each night fighter in Tracker. The useful part is the cross-type upgrades since those are hard to find. Once you move a unit to night fighter, then in PDU On you can switch to any other night fighter unit. Note that the Yokosuka unit is actually a float plane unit that can be upgraded to night fighters - pretty useful if you ask me.

The cross-type upgrade dates shown is the available date of that units 'gateway' into being a night fighter unit. For the units that arrive as night fighters the date listed is when the unit arrives. Obviously the cross-type upgrade dates can be affected by R&D.

Hope this helps!! If anyone wants the excel sheet, just PM me.

I added the 82n IF to this list, although in my game it doesn't show an upgrade to the Dinah. In a scenario 1 file I had though, it does show the upgrade to Dinah. It could be that I already did an upgrade with that unit and that is why it is no longer showing in my file, or it is a difference between scen 1 and DBB. I'm not sure what units were used to construct the 28th, but I suspect that might be another one that is either different in DBB or else I already upgraded it and lost the NF path.

It helps a lot. I found two here that I haven't used as NF, the two late arriving Peggy units. The issue is with IJAAF units that I'm already low on NF, so I can't really add more at this stage anyway. To have this list really will help in planning in my other game and any future ones. Thanks!!

The great part with the float plane unit is you can also resize it to at least 24.

Indeed. I'll have to look at its airframe options, but if it can also go carrier capable, then you could resize it to be a normal-size Sentai!

Yes, agree with you and Lokasenna about that floatplane unit.

Glad the table is helpful!

I would like to know how you got that 28th Sentai. I don't see an obvious units that would build into it (like 28th Chutai, or 28th Detachment etc).

It could be another DBB difference. I looked at the unit in my game and it has no withdrawal date. I didn't double check all of these for scenario 1, so it may not line up exactly.

Hey Obvert -

Can you tell me again which one you have found works better - the Nick d or the KAI Dinah? I see the Nick has armor and higher durability, but the Dinah has speed. Randy has durability of Nick, speed of Dinah, plus radar so clearly it is better, but between the Nick and the Dinah I'm not sure which is better.

Thanks!

I can't remember now completely, but check if there is an arriving recon group of that name. I think it might be that. Or that it was formed from smaller Chutai recon groups.

EDIT: Checked in 43 and there seems to be no 28th Sentai in the reinforcements or the groups at that time. It's probably a group that changed name at some point.

The Nick Id I haven't used, but it looks about the same as the early J1N1 without radar. That plane was a deterrent, but didn't kill as many 4Es, and suffered the usual high attrition rates.

The Dinah seems to go down even more frequently than others, and strangely enough I can't help but think this is due to it's high speed. It gets engagements most of the time. I can't keep up with losses though. Probably a lack of armor hurts too.

I haven't found any of the early NF to be stellar, but the J1N1-Sa is just slightly more capable than the others.

I wonder if the name is off on his list? My groups that pretty obviously came from the float plane group is highlighted below. It's been resized to 24 planes and is pretty close in name.

There is another that's off, the 352 Ku-S3. Mine is 24. Can't remember if I resized that somehow.

The 321 Ku-S1 and 321 Ku S-2 also are some of the groups withdrawing in July/44. They do help early though.

EDIT:

I just checked in 43. The Yokusuka Ku S-2 is a FP group that upgrades to the IJN fighter line, which is good. It's 36 planes. Very useful.

The Yokusuka Ku T-2 does upgrade to the NF line. Mine must have renamed later.

Erik,

reading up on this, I note that you are/were trying to use the training groups as your kami groups. You can do this, but I don't beleive that is what the dev's intended and that is why you struggle with planes for them.

I beleive the intent is for them to step up the training speed for your kami pilots as when you start using kami's your pilot usage will soar. I can go through 10K pilots in a month with kami's. Those large training groups let you get +100 pilots trained for kami in 45 days or less.

Then you use your regular groups for kami. You dead CV TB groups you convert to kami and those can use all of the KATES that you stockpiled from the early war. 800kg bombs or torps make big BOOMs when they hit. Yes, Kates are slow, but when they hit anything what they hit slows down pretty fast. 3 Kate kami hits is about all any allied ship can take.

As you note, almost ANY group can convert to Tsurugi and like the Kate it has a 800kg payload. And it uses the Ha-35.

I never convert any fighter groups to kami ... I never have enough of those as it is. I need all the fighter groups as fighters to protect kami attacks as well as protect my bases. So while Oscar maybe be a good kami, I can't use them that way unless I can convert a different type of group to Oscar. There are a few recon groups that can ... but I've still left them as fighters, not kami's. With the high SR final generation fighters, I need extra groups to be able to rotate them in and out of battles to keep enough airframes in the air ... YMMV.

A lot of FP groups can convert to fighters (eventually via FF) and that is how I get enough NF groups. It takes time and PP's.

Yeah, I've been training, but I don't really need to have too many more pilots. I have about 2000 planes that I would want to use in kami strikes. I definitely have that many pilots trained already. So it makes sense to send it all if there is an opportunity. If he lands on the Home Islands there won't really be too many more shots after that anyway.

Not to many Kates around except those flying ASW. But they carry 2 x 250kg anyway, right? Same as an Oscar, George, Sam, Frank, Jill and Grace. Don't all kami planes use their normal bomb load?

Very few FP groups in Scen 1 convert to fighters as far as I've figured out. I check virtually all of them. Only about 4 groups used the FF, and one converts directly from FP, but those are the only ones I've noticed.

One reason I am converting many of the training groups to kami F if possible is that they can also fly CAP. So the fighters train AIR and LOW NAV BOMBING and are then potentially dual use groups. Most are only ten planes, but that works since there are so many of them.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: What looks like the entire Allied sub fleet moves into the area North of Nagasaki, and some even try to get through the Tsushima strait. That doesn't go so well with a number of subs hitting mines. The Es and ASW air take their toll as well. I'd say the Allies lose at least 15 subs in two days!!!

We'll keep up the pressure in the air and on the sea and try for a few more damaged ones. One tried for the BB TF but was pounded for no gain and only 1-2 made it through the strait, probably damaged, and don't get a shot at the KB. I included quite a bunch of the reports, but not even half of the subs attacked. I only am showing those that took more than 10 hits!

The I-401 didn't last long. It was sunk near Ningpo. We also lose an RO sub.

STRAT BOMBING: Several bombing runs come in but again do little with weather, NF and flak reducing effectiveness.

CHINA: The main Allied Army moves in and hits our troops from Canton with a DA. They do fine, getting a 1:1, with the Allies taking almost double the casualties. I'll take that. We now have a few days to begin moving back, most likely.

HOME ISLANDS: The Allies make a big move to hit the BBs stationed around the NW of Kyushu. Only one TF is actually in range of the Allied CVs during the flying hours, and several small strikes come in and are shrugged off. Only one hit on the Musashi that destroys a machine gun.

All of these are preceded though by massive and devastating sweeps that hit not only LBA but some KB Sams. The KB moves to Maizuro to replenish, and should be back to normal in two days. Almost no pilots (about 10 total) are lost from the KB fighter groups. nice to fly over our territory at least.

A few DD are hit and a couple of E sunk. The DD could make it if the fires go out in the next day or two. All BBs move back as the sub horde is near and the B-29s are dropping mines, hitting Fukuoka, luckily where nothing was posted. Minesweepers get started and take out 62 on the 11th.

Looks like something big is brewing. I'd say these moves preclude some kind of plan to clear the airspace, get some bombardments in and possibly invade Kyushu. I'll begin to shift more troops this way and get the CD guns situated. The 1500 planes at Nagasaki will be reduced and other bases will continue at their current 200-300 level.

SUBS: More subs hit. This is a massacre! Not sure why he's leaving the here, although there is a groups of SAGs now hanging out in the East China Sea. One of our subs ran into a big Amphib TF North of Nago too. Hmmmm.

DEI: After seeing a big LST TF at Palembang I risk the three DDs at Singers for a fast run in. They make it just fine and hit several while sinking a few SC and a PF. Not as good as I'd hoped, but at 0% moon still pretty good.

STRAT BOMBING: The B-29s finally break through and knock out Kagoshima's remaining LI. A few shot down by NF though.

CHINA: Just more bombing of troops.

HOME ISLANDS: Something looks to be happening for sure. A large amphib near Nago and on the 13th a clutch of what look like CL/DD SAGs appear just South of Korea about 6 hexes from Nagasaki. I'll rev up the KB and turn on the strike planes, but it could be a lure to do just that. I'll keep back the 2E and just go with DB/TB for now. The BBs will move into range as well. Could get interesting!!

Nice to see all of these ships up here. Been a while since they've popped up in the combat screen.

A lot of bomb hits, not as many torpedoes, but a few got through.
