Which leadership rating, Armor or Artillery, is more importanat to a self-propelled indirect fire unit? In another post, I'd said how I like to start out a long campaign with mortars or light AT guns, because they're cheap, then eventually upgrade them to good SP Howitzers, such as Hummels. The question arose as to which command rating was more important to SP Artillery, Armor or Artillery? Well, I thought it would be the Artillery rating but now I'm not so sure. I checked out the 'normal' ratings of some unit leaders for German 81 mm mortars and Hummels and found that the Mortar leaders regularly had much higher Artillery ratings and the Hummel leaders much higher Armor ratings. I have always thought that Armor ratings help with things like maneuver speed and direct fire accuracy while good Artillery ratings help with indirect fire speed and accuracy. I tried to check this out by altering the leadership ratings of some Hummels (set the Armor and Artillery ratings alternatively to 20 and 90) but the results were not very conclusive. Anyway, my question is: which leader rating is more important to an SP gun that you intend to use primarily in the indirect fire role? ------------------ Target, Cease Fire !

I just wanted to bump this to the top since I got no replies. Has anyone looked into this? If in fact the Artillery rating is critical to indirect fire capability, it seems that it would make sense to buy mortars and upgrade them rather than start with vehicles. ------------------ Target, Cease Fire !

I don't know for sure which is more important; but I suspect the artillery rating would be a better thing to stress. I ran some tests on this a month or so ago; and it looks like the response time of the guns is partly linked to the artillery skill of the gunners. Basically, regular and veteran units with skills of 99 seemed to respond as fast as elites. I've never tested SP guns by varying armor and artillery skill while keeping the experience low; but it shouldn't be a hard test to run...and it wasn't. Nope, no difference at all. For any reasonable split, it doesn't matter which skill is greater for onboard SPA. Since one can't own offboard assets, it doesn't matter how they're affected. I been checking on this in spwaw manual v4.1 and couldn't find a conclusive answer. What confused me is that mortar and artillery have high artillery rating. But, sp mortar and sp gun have high armor rating. My theory is that firing using the B key uses the artillery value while using the F or Z key utilizes the infantry/armor values. Just a wild guess on my part |-)

Don't forget to factor in the arty rating of the FO when utilizing indirect fire. I've found this means a lot. Supposedly, direct LOS is critical to indirect fire accuracy, but from what I'm getting in my current play of U2R that isn't necessarily true. Granted, direct LOS is going to help. But I have an FO Jeep with 86 arty rating. My core includes 4 x M12 155 SPA, I have no trouble at all leaving the FO Jeep parked with the artillery and delivering fire pretty much where I want it. So far as 60mm mortar indirect goes, it is deadly accurate, without EVER seeing the selected target! 4.2" mortar is sort of in between, without the punch the 155's deliver. All I'm saying here is the FO can't be left out of calculations when discussing indrect arty fire, onboard or off - and response times are accordingly tops with high rated FO. Availability seems to be the same, no matter what. Bing
