We are now approaching turn 70. Bob and I are making progress but the logisitcal challenges are beginning to become significant. This series of updates were taken around turn 60.

Not finding native producing cities on a map this size while trying to maintain a fight at the limits of expansion are straining supply and logistics to the limit.

First off, the overall map:

You can see here in this image that I've started 3 invasions of neighboring territories. The world is explored and it's now all about choosing the fights.

I decided to take on the New Union, (the deep blue territories), The Burgundians, (the lime-ish green territories) and continue my fight with the PR who has now been beaten down and very nearly defeated. The New Union was buffered by the crate AI I uncovered who were weak so I started a fight against them there. My thinking was that the fight against the Burgundians could possibly link up and squeeze the New Union from two directs. The NU are also in a tough fight with the Das Reich regime, (lighter lime green in the top left). For now I am thankfully not at war with Das Reich and I will try and keep it that way.

So, going clockwise from top left:

Here is a shot in the New Union region. A largely empty continent with a crate AI city and a few resources. I invaded here because I didn't want to get zerg rushed bye the NU who has 3 major cities just beyond the land mass here. So, I'll take out the AI city and use it as a base for holding off the NU in the narrows just to the North East:

This is the are in the East where I attacked the Burgundians and I hope to eventually move North West along the coast and link up with the previous shot group. The Burgundians are the largest of the regimes but seem to be very weakly held in the area I am hitting, which is good luck.

I used the island off the coast as a staging base after dropping off an engineer unit there and quickly built out a port, two air bases, and a tank factory. I loaded up the airbases with levelbomber III's and began recon and preperatory bombardment of the area. There was a nice, juicy, lightly defended city there on the coast and I took it without too much trouble. The expected zerg rush didn't happen and I expanded into the land mass quickly.

The remains of the Peoples Rebulic are still holding on in spots to the South East and Southern map edge. I have taken the island city of Taipei which was their captiol city. The rest is mainly clean up. They no longer pose any offensive threat, they more or less wait to be squashed.

Yep, that's pretty much it. I'm finding the going suprisingly easy. I've played 3 games with these settings, (except for the AI, which for this game I set to "-" as opposed to normal) and was completely stomped by 1 or 2 dominant regimes.

I think you can see just how much influence the initial placement has in these games. It's essentially the most important thing.

We had this problem going back to AT when Zaratoughda designed a balancing scheme where the countries would have their borders adjusted until some balance of initial cites was obtained and then the game would start. When ATG came out it appeared to me that those routines in Z's mod were incorporated, but now I'm beginning to wonder. I'm wondering why there is still such imbalance introduced.

In this case, I think it's because of the immediate surroundings, possibly 20 or 30 hexes away from the capitol city. If there is too much in the immediate vicinity of the capitol, then even if those regimes are opposing you, your chances of victory are almost assured.

At least that's todays theory.

Here's a shot of the incursion into the New Union and Burgundian territory. The NU seems to be putting up a decent fight but the Burgundians are falling like a house of cards.

Here's a shot of the overall map. It's fairly clear that Bob and I are gaining fast ground.

We've rapped this one up, Bob got a little burnt out on the repeatative island hopping and grind down of the AI regimes. I was having some fun thrashing the New Union and had made several new advances against a new foe.

I'll post some screens later to wrap the AAR up.
