Senior staff member Indali, representing Elder Sargos and speaking from a prepared speech:

Good Fortune and happiness, to you all, my dear friends. Forgive me if I do not celebrate quite yet our victory in this war. Some of you may know I lost my son two years ago in a space battle deep on Dhayut territory. I just found out that my daughter had died in heavy fighting against Dhayut troops on their designated homeworld a mere week before they sued for peace. It has been a difficult road for myself, but so it has for very many of us. Still, forgive an old man his absence.

I congratulate our Leader on prevailing in this long and tumultuous endeavor. The responsibilities upon his shoulders have been immense and peace will only bring a brief reprieve as our galactic community must find its feet again. Our friends and allies among the stars may even think unkindly of us for what we have done, but such is the way of the leader, a lonely path, indeed. Only remember this, my dearest friends, it was not a thing we would choose to do, or wish upon anyone. Rather, our decision and its consequences were forced upon us by those we have overcome. Always remember that. Always.

Ah, but Life goes on, does it not? A hard thought for one such as myself at this time, but I remember my duties and my oaths. So, what to do with those Dhayut who may break away from this puppet regime that is left of their empire of terror? We must defeat them. We have lost too much to let go now. Our allies may not understand now, but in time they will forgive.

Pirates are on the rise? Not surprising given that war breeds chaos. Well, then, we must defeat them. We brought these pirates on with our war and now we must sweep them aside, for war is done. Our friends will look kindly upon that, we can be assured.

As for ourselves, we must remain who we are, Securan. We must hold to harmony and happiness, retain the spark of Life that drives us all. Be joyful in the Journey, in Life as well as in this wonderful galaxy.

Health and happiness, my friends. We have earned it many times over.

Memo From PTSM (Peace Through Strength Movement)

To: High Council

First Congratilations on our victory over the dhayut. it has come to our attention that you are considering continuing on against the bokarians we of the PTSM believe this is uneccesary they only have 3 worlds and are contained and they and the dhayuts no longer represent a serious threat to others. from reports we heard rebelion spreads through the former dyhut empire and should serve as an example to the boskarians against agressive moves. besides more important matters must be addresed Piracy has flourished in the wake of this conflict and must be delt with. And an even more worrying problem is the news of this thing called the silvermist if we dont act now to remove this threat it could spread endagering not just us but the rest of the galaxy

we thank you again for your time most wise council may harmony be with you

Your high happinesses,

We must send firm congratulations to our brave soldiers and ship crews for their superb rendition of the Dhayut. We shall feast them for many generations to come.

Now as to the matters at hand. As strange as his ways may be, I find that the representative of the galactic trade network is wise in his responses. Perhaps we should teach him how to drink wine? His answers to the first three questions fill my belly with content.

We must also agree with Losan Hebar that eradicating this nano-plague from the galaxy must be our priority as of this moment. Fishers of Men is right that we should ensure that they are adequately fueled and supplied, and I would further suggest massed in force, to deal with this problem. Perhaps sending some scouts in ahead of the main fleet to glean the extent of the problem would also be advised.

As to the fourth question I believe we should purge the galaxy from this repulsive government. However we should wait until our fleets return victorious from engaging the Silvermist. This will allow our troops some time for celebrating their recent gains. (And perhaps for a few pirates to learn the error of their theiving ways.) This time, though, let us declare war through the formal channels and swiftly and decisively crush all resistance. Three planets more is what we ask. This would significantly lift our standing in the galaxy, your happinesses. I note that the population of our great empire rose by 50% when we rightfully liberated the Dhayut homeworld. It should rise again by about a 1/4 if we teach these Boskaran about the pleasures of Utopian Paradise.

If you will excuse me, there is some Aquasian Incense in my tent that must be burned before sundown.

Most esteemed fellow elder councels:

Although initially I was against the Dhayut's invasion, I must acknowledge it has been successful. The rest of the galaxy is forgiving when displays of strength flex their considerable muscles in the name of peace and harmony.

Since we began this show of strength, we must carry it through to completion. I do agree that the other existing Dhayut planets are harmless so long as they are subjugated, although if an independent colony successfully resists our peaceful approach to dignity in the galaxy, they must be educated. The other matter is the most unfriendly Boskarans. We should end all wars once and for all, and in order to avoid a second great war too soon, we should dispense of the Boskaran threat. I would personally take over all three of their colonies, however a strike on their homeworld may subjugate the other colonies and allow us to avoid having to infiltrate their extremely well-defensed station.

Once again, what was begun must be finished. Once the Boskaran threat has been eliminated, we can put all of our efforts toward restoring our well-deserved and previously acknowledged Noble reputation. Wiping out eight pirate bases should go a long way toward spreading goodwill.

****Official message from Earth Federation ****

Greetings Securan empire,
Earth Federation expresses its gratitude for your sacrifice which brought about the end of the Dhayut menace.

It is our hope that we can work with Securan empire in harmony and that you will follow your traditions that are deeply
rooted in following peaceful and harmonious way of life. It is our hope that we will continue trading and that possible
Mutual defense Pact is on the horizon.

We would also like to note that, even though we do have a past rich in terran and galactic conflicts, we have changed our ways and
we will gladly follow your harmonious way of goverment and culture.

It would be most fortunate if we could arrange inter-cultural exchanges to bring our two empires together.
After all, we do not want for misunderstanding to arise, as did between you and the Dhayut empire.

To finish, please consider cultural exchanges with the Boskara empire. They might be closely related to Dhayut but please
consider your peace-loving and harmonious traditions when dealing with them.

Greeting from Earth Federation President,

Hector

Thanks again to everyone who is participating. I'm certainly enjoying reading the various posts and the creative 'Point of View' aspects.

I'm playing out episode 9 and are about 10 years in now since episode 8. Still a mountain of tasks to perform cleaning out the Silver Mist and pirates so I think this update will take a fair amount longer to play before I can post. Perhaps another 24 hours. Even though I'm playing this out now please feel free to continue posting. Nothing really strategic has happened since the last update.

I thought I'd give a bit of an update now because this looks as though it is going to take a while to resolve. The Silver Mist has destroyed 3 fleets including fleets designed to eradicate them. And pirates are copying some of my cruiser designs and making life difficult.

Also, at this stage we are finding old allies turning away from us to a degree. Nothing dramatic but some now covet our systems and it is having a massive impact on our relationship with them. Last time I looked both the Quameno and Kaidians wanted our systems to the tune of a negative forty two relationship factor!

I'll keep playing when I can but this looks to be a long period of time to cover this episode. I'll probably have to edit this video based on the amount of battle footage. Heaps of it.

Hello Das123,

I justed wanted to know if you remember which ruin gave you the DeathRay. I consider to try and give it to the Boskara or Dhayut in my game for roleplay.

Pardon me for arriving late to the Council meetings, Your Excellency. As you know, I have been busy entertaining our Human friends. They have this strange game called golf.

Anyway, I am curious whether Your Excellency might post an image of the Holy Victory Screen so that we might see how far we are from our Inevitable Triumph.

In particular, I am curious whether regaining our reputation is in any way important to the Holy Victory Screen. Is Reputation a factor in our Holy Victory Conditions?

Thank you, Das! Been fun RP'ing these posts from this end as well. Understood about the length of time for the next video. No worries.

I am curious. Are you running this on 1.7.0.2? Asking because if so, I'm curious if you're experiencing any lag. See none in your videos.

Episode 9: Pirates and Silver Mist

Watch the video

Link to save-game

Most Esteemed Council Members,

Fifteen long and difficult years have passed since last you all met here in the Leentaar Council Chambers. A Silver Mist outbreak near the Aattuk worlds has proven difficult to control although it has now been some years since the last outbreak.

Pirates have also been on the rise and while we have cleared many pirate bases we have recently gone into battle against the legendary Dark Ghostriders - a group of pirates not heard of for hundreds of years. Our fleet of 5 capital ships lead by admiral Donato Bendu has been destroyed losing all hands.

Our reputation is improving but we fear that keeping the Dhayuts subjugated and keeping a fleet of Silver Mist destroyers on the now Quameanno planet of Iceboo 2 may be holding us back.

A regional capital has been established in the old Dhayut worlds and this is keeping corruption low in these systems.

We will continue to focus on removing the pirates from the galaxy but the main strategic questions are:

1. Should we free the Dhayuts?

2. Should we remove our Silver Mist ships from the Iceboo system?

3. Should we initiate any police actions against the Boskarans or Slukens?

No, reputation isn't a victory condition.
Happiness; Number of resort bases; Income from resort bases; Percentage of treaties; are the racial victory conditions. I rather stupidly put in that 33% of planetary income and 33% of galactic population were also victory conditions which means we really can't win the game without some massive offensive manoeuvres and taking a lot of planets.

I am running 1.7.0.2 and while I'm not seeing any noticeable lag during game play the saves are now taking quite a long time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel we are close to the end of the game now in playability terms. The galaxy is incredibly docile and we can't really lose from here. How does everyone feel if we manage to get all our racial objectives we declare the game won at that point?

Regarding the Dhayuts we conquered them to end their evil ways, releasing them would just allow them to go back to enslaving their neighbours... if they can survive. No I say we keep them under our watchful gaze to ensure our brave soldiers did not die for naught.

I trust we are quickly rebuilding our fleets to tackle this latest insult and avenge the demise of Admiral Bendu! And while on the subject the Silver Mist menace has proven a recurring menace upon our galaxy, we should upgrade the Mist Attack design, procure additional fleets of them and patrol this blighted region of space to ensure we wipe them out.

Regarding Icebu if it's a strain on relations with the Quameno just move them beyond their influence and perhaps park a Explorer in that system for now. Also be sure to keep an eye out for those little red X's on the in-system mini-map that denotes space monsters, seemed you missed a few in the early fights against them. And as always, excellent update Das.

And if you're getting bored with this galaxy so I'm ok with you getting the racial victory and calling it quits, I do hope we'll get an replacement AAR though.

@Locarnus: In my game it was named Hidden Fortress of Maxus for the Death Ray and Nexus of the Red Claw for the Devastator Pulse, if you want to add them in via the Editor it's very easy to just add a Ruins:Super Weapon to a planet near the bugs and select which component and give it a random suitable name or copy the above.

Esteemed Elders of the Council,

The war against the Silvermist has truly been a great challenge for our people and I grieve for all those lost to these evil nano-machines. We must keep our defenses strong and scour the galaxy to make sure the Silvermist are eradicated.

These new legendary pirates arrive on the heels of the Silvermist. We must again build new ships of war and defeat them decisively to preserve our harmony. We should spare no expense in trades with our allies to make sure that our ships are as well armed, armored and shielded as possible. For a wealthy and peaceful people like ours, the losses we have suffered in these recent battles are difficult to bear.

The Dhayut still show a propensity for conflict and should remain our subjects.

We should keep our Silvermist ships in the area where we last saw the Silvermist. Exploration ships should be positioned throughout the systems in that area to make sure we have found and destroyed all of the Silvermist clouds.

When we are certain that the Silvermist and the Pirates have been destroyed, then I feel we should have a period of healing, where we focus again on our peaceful pursuits and the development of the wonders and improvements we previously discussed, as well as increased trade and tourism.

I bring before you the proposals of the multi-racial and ecumenical Securan Universal Paradise Party, which has gained greatly in the recent regional elections in response to what many native and immigrant Securans see as the tragic and dangerous drift from Paradise and the noble guiding lights of peace, love, and joy that were a beacon to all civilized beings in the galaxy to the more primitive, cruder passions of fear, animus, and avarice reflecting those of some of our uncivilized neighbors. We must seek a return to the decent and noble path and see Paradise regained.

1. Should we free the Dhayuts?

Of course we must. Once again history has proven the wise Securan saying that “If you want war, prepare for war. If you want peace, make peace.” The Dhayuts were weak and did us no harm, and we let them inspire in us the vices we saw in them and engage in wanton insecticide. The shame of our Dhayut adventure must be redressed – the galaxy has learned that Securans will not stand idly against aggression, but also that Securans may overreact from fear. Now that we are strong, we need not fear, nor need the galaxy fear us. We have shown strength, now we must shoulder the burdens of peace and bring the galaxy closer to the ideal of Paradise.

We propose the fleets withdraw from the borders of other empires to our planets or deep space resupply/repair bases – we may call them Peacekeeping bases. The subjugated Dhayuts must be released and provided with generous civilian aid to rehabilitate their people. With diligence, we can make them a Protectorate. In those worlds we have conquered and begun to civilize, we bear the duties of a conqueror and must press on with rehabilitation and show that insect life, so ready to bind together in war, can also bind together in peace.

2. Should we remove our Silver Mist ships from the Iceboo system?

Of course we must. The Silver Mist threaten the galaxy and ultimately the universe. They are the true enemy of all sentient life. Let us not sow discord with our friends by imposing upon their hospitality. Let far-flung Peacekeeping bases and gas mining operations be built to support our peacekeeping fleets, and long-range scanners be devised to provide warning both of Silver Mist and of rogue pirates who will not learn the ways of peace.

3. Should we initiate any police actions against the Boskarans or Slukens?

No, or we sink wantonly into irretrievable degradation and disrepute. The Boskarans hold a mere two worlds and have given no offense – indeed, the quail in fear before us and send us tribute. To make war and not call it war is to mock the ancestral Securan laws of Happiness. We must maintain our principles.

At next opportunity to speak upon the floor other proposals of the party’s platform to return to the noble path will be humbly submitted.

To present before the Council, herewith the SUPP Platform:

Strength through Joy Act: The Empire fails its people’s recreational needs. Native Securans fall away from the their hedonistic traditions into dark paths of tireless industry and mindless thrift, while those who became Securans by choice lack access to the appropriate facilities to be assimilated to Securan high standards of culture, leisure, entertainment and recreation and instilled with habits of tourism, consumerism, and revelry. Accordingly, we propose the sum of 717,000 be immediately spent to commence resort projects at suitable locations spread through the galaxy in order to provide beacons of Securan culture in the darkness.

Military Relief Act:
Part 1: Securans are not made for war. The rigors and horrors of combat harden and coarsen Securans and cause permanent psychological pathology and joy memory disturbances that can make them strangers to their families and alien in their own culture. Partly this is due to the cruel deprivation of recreational activities of those who serve in space. Even if they cannot take their daily leisure and make their regular observances, we can at least make it law that every ship and station built or refit from now forward include a Recreation Center, and that every ship of frigate size or greater not assigned to permanent duty within a system including a spaceport with recreation facilities be refitted as soon as possible to a reformed design.

Part 2: The lives of our people must be protected. Accordingly, scientific research shall focus on the development of robotic repairs and shield technologies in order to minimize the risk to spacefaring citizens.

Part 3: Preserve lives by disbanding all raw divisions, particularly those of any native Securans and other peoples to whom violence is disturbing, while retaining in service as guardians of the peace only those veteran divisions whose troops have been so hardened that they cannot make a proper return to society (though through the spread of recreation centers and resorts, some may be saved). To replace the disbanded forces and provide for our security, create garrisons of the new generation of perfected battle bot made by the Sylon Corporation.

Part 4: To preserve harmony and peace and promote Universal Paradise, we propose a new class of large peacekeeping ships with long range sensors and ample fuel supplies for independent operation be commissioned to rove space independently both exploring and detecting and correcting breaches of the peace. The military would evaluate the retrofitting of existing warships for this purpose.

Proclamation: Open Door to Secura: We propose that all who wish to come to our space as friends in happiness and peace be welcomed with full acceptance and assimilation. This will swell the ranks of Securan bliss and spread word of the beacon of Paradise through the galaxy. The peacekeeping forces shall spread word of this invitation.

----

The SUPP also proposes that the foreign service, civil service, and hospitality service develop certain interstellar initiatives including Galactic Directives to govern all the inhabitants of the galaxy under our care and that of our allies. These proposals would be along the following lines:

A Prime Galactic Directive prohibiting interference with the development of native cultures that maintain peace and do not engage in barbaric practices (i.e., slavery, extermination, piracy).

An Anti-Barbarism Galactic Security Directive to implement the Prime: All civilized empires are authorized and entitled to liberate any world with a population subject to slavery or extermination, or engage overt pirates, and our Peacekeepers are directed to engage in appropriate operations to carry this out.

Rehabilitation of Pirates: All pirates other than those who have already revealed their essential malevolence shall be invited to reform and provided with financial support to learn new trades and affordable rates at Securan resorts and spas to enable them to pursue a more pacific manner of life. Those who evidence failure to reform will be subject to permanent pacification by our Peacekeepers.

Convention against atrocities: Secura pledges to prevent atrocities against defenseless civilians such as bombardment of inhabited worlds and intentional destruction of purely civilian ships and facilities, and proclaims declares its right to pacify any empire engaging in such activities. Sadly, we descended to such brutality in the police action against the hapless Dhayut. Secura will also encourage its allies to adopt a similar policy.

OK, this is heavy Securan role-playing and getting back in touch with their pleasure-loving pacifist roots, but that’s something Legends encourages. And all very responsive to the decline of moral position and diplomatic standing in which Secura finds itself –self-restrained pacifistic policeman of the galaxy is an interesting and topical role.

***Official message from the Earth Federation***

Greeting securan Empire,

We believe that it would be in everyones best interest if you kept close watch over Dhayuts. They cannot be trusted and are a very dangerous race.

We have contacted Quameanno empire and they seem to resent your operations in their system without their permission. They seem to see it as an insult as they are being treated as an inferior nation that cannot handle their own affairs. We believe that they would be open to a Mutual Defense Pact which would allow you to place Explorer Ships in their systems which would help you monitor Silvermist activity. They have also agreed that if MDP is reached Securan empire can place their fleets jsut outside their SOI and then enter their territories as needed to deal with Silvermist.
However, they have asked that any information about fleet activities be presented to the media as joint fleet exercises. We believe that they do not want their citizens to panic and their enemies to know about their actual fleet weaknesses.

As for Boskara and Slukeen, we believe that Securan empire should first deal with Silvermist outbreak and the very dangerous pirate faction. After that we can convene the Galactic Assembly to discuss these two potentially dangerous empires.

***End of transmission***

Episode 10: Pax Secura

Watch the video

Link to final save-game (1.7.0.3)

Members of the Leentaar High Council,

Another 12 years have passed now without further outbreaks of Silver Mist. We now have ships monitoring all possible Silver Mist systems and luckily they have nothing to report.

The Haarkonish have further reduced the Dhayuts taking a number of their worlds including their homeworld. The Dhayut menace is now all but over.

Our citizens are happy and the galaxy is a peaceful place thanks to our calming presence. The galaxy benefits through our 'Pax Secura' - our Securan Peace.

There are no longer any pressing matters requiring your attention. Your wisdom and guidance over the last 50 years has secured the peace and prosperity we enjoy today.

And with that I'll officially call this AAR to a close as far as video content is concerned. I learned an awful lot about playing the game differently which was really enjoyable. There were times I strongly disagreed with directives given - such as giving gifts and releasing the luxury resources. In past games I never did that. Ever. It was good to see this mechanic at work.

Thank you all so much for participating.

I will make another one soon but would ask for criticism on how this could have been done better. I may not take up all the advice but it would be valuable to glean what worked and didn't work. This was all a bit of an experiment doing a collaborative 'let's play' series but I thought the collaborative nature worked well.

Things I would handle differently would be:
to make sure the victory conditions are achievable;
play on a smaller galaxy - 400 or 700 stars;
play with less races - say 8ish;
play as a more aggressive race - anything from a corporation such as the Haarkonish through to full-on aggression such as the Dhayuts;
perhaps add a title screen to each video - but that would mean post-production which I didn't really need to do for most of the videos at the start;

Great job, Das123! Thank you!

That was quite enjoyable. I'm glad you had fun too.

With the colony victory condition enabled as well, I think we would have been closer to the threshold. The more factions there are, the longer it takes to achieve victory. I would agree that achieving all of our faction victory conditions and having a relatively peaceful galaxy where we are the main superpower is a good end point.

My vote for the next AAR is to play as a Feudal Dhayut society or as a Mortalen Military Dictatorship.

That should be quite different from this one.

Regards,

- Erik

Excellent showing Das123, eagerly awaiting the next one.
And speaking off the next one and seeing how timid the Sluken were in this game I say you show them how it's done, Hive Mind to Way of Darkness and StarBurner engines, what could possibly go wrong...

Thank you Das that was fun.

Certainly it is interesting seeing how people would do things differently.

As to doing it differently, three quick points. Firstly for some of the strategic choices a screenshot would have been very helpful. The screen was there in the video but finding it was not always easy. Having access to savegames (which I personally never used) was also a good idea. Secondly, I personally would have liked to see the strategic choices being more varied rather than often being war or diplomacy. Which planet to colonise? Should we build explorers or constructors? I thought the questions about characters were good and could have done with some more later in the game. Maybe a ship design question where you post a screen of a proposed or partially finished design? Or a review of our designs and a question about fleet composition? Finally, seeing the setup screens would make a nice introduction to the game as well as providing us an orientation. For example, it took quite some time for me to realise that territory should not be considered since it was disabled in the victory conditions.

Well done.

Thanks for the AAR!
Things I would handle differently would be:
to make sure the victory conditions are achievable;
YES, it is possible to misinterpret how those percentage requirements will work out.

play on a smaller galaxy - 400 or 700 stars; If only to bring the whole cast of characters into range quickly.
play with less races - say 8ish; Yes, 8-10, if new ones can develop. Though with a conquest race you may want more meat ready on the table.

play as a more aggressive race - anything from a corporation such as the Haarkonish through to full-on aggression such as the Dhayuts;

Being evil insectoids is effective but actually somewhat limiting in plot development and deision points - a trading power presents numerous role-playing dilemmas to confront, if only economic vs. strategic interests. Those would rotate around more practical issues than the moral dilemmas faced by the Securans.

perhaps add a title screen to each video - but that would mean post-production which I didn't really need to do for most of the videos at the start; They are already identified by thumbnail in YouTubem which should be enough.

Your approach works.

On the Securans, can you upload a final save at your convenience? The role playing issues of a Securan empire are interesting. The expansion phase may be over, but the era of Imperial difficulties lies ahead. I tried the save you uploaded a few days ago but got a strange load error in game regarding security cryptography. Maybe a patch version issue though I think I've used the most current daily patch each time.

Excellent work Das123! I earned quite a lot from being part of this role-play game and from listening to your commentary. For your future "Lets Play" series, I would definitely choose a more aggressive race to play, like the Mortalen. It would be totally different from your last experience. It might also be good to wait until a final more complete patched version is available. Most everything would be working and stable so you would not find some little things not functioning right.

You are quite appreciated.

finally managed to catch up with this one only to learn that a new one is in the making *clasping hands with anticipation*

Thank you Das, as a fervent LP consumer I can tell you that this type of collaborative LP is not very frequent and is very fun and attracts a lot of people....so aside from your many merits you'll also attract more people to the forum and game. Well done

I enjoyed participating and following along. It has helped me immensely with my learning of Distant Worlds.

It would be particularly cool to have an empire on the edge of existence- barely surviving from threat to threat and somehow overcoming each existential threat.

Thanks Das123! Hope you have another AAR soon.

I liked this one, but not as much as i loved your tutorial AAR. I guess the difference is that this AAR was less into details and more big picture.
You're really good at doing lp's so i hope you keep doing them. :)

Very entertaining video series!

A suggestion:
In my opinion you should show more. Your general approach was to show everything while the game was paused and explaining what you would do and then usually skipping forward to when your actions have shown effect.
I like to see more actual playing in a Lets play. It will lengthen the videos, but thats fine with me.

Just got back from a quiet weekend on the coast, so forgive the belated reply. Many thanks, Das, for the fun we all had. Very enjoyable, and a learning experience for myself as well. Looking forward to the next
